  • Okay, even though Battle Before Dawn will always be my most hated level from any game, not just from Fire Emblem, it's not the only potentially annoying chapter in the series.
    For this episode, we take a look at what is widely regarded as the most annoying desert chapter in the FE series. Personally, I don't feel as much hate towards this level as most levels I've featured in Worst Levels Ever, I even find it kinda fun, but I can certainly see why other people would hate it.

      I actually found it super funny one time. I wanted to silence Ursula with Serra, so i went close to her and used the staff on ursula, and i was expecting an awesome silence when..... Missed. And the lack of sound after that out of the anticipation (First silence ever) was such a poker face moment.

    Fire Emblem has its fair share of bad chapters, that's for sure. But none, I repeat, NONE will ever come anywhere near close to the awfulness that is Tear Ring Saga Map 16: Dark Beasts. That is, easily, THE single worst map in any Fire Emblem-style game. (TRS pretty much is a Fire Emblem game)
    Let me attempt to sum up the nightmare: you're in a HUGE cave-based map. The only enemies are Opus, basically Mogals from Sacred Stones... that can MULTIPLY. Yes, every single enemy on the map can split in two. And there's at least 40 there to START with. Opus are also really annoying: they fly, so people in the rear aren't safe, and their weapon has no weight so they double you a lot and are hard to double back. Oh, and the boss also makes more of them: 4 at a time. (AND they can split on the turn they're created too)
    The map is also mostly swamp tiles, you know, the ones from Gaiden that hurt you every turn you're on them AND slow your movement to a crawl. Of course the enemies just fly over them... Oh, and the map's victory condition? It's not Rout. You can FINALLY finish killing all the annoying bastards, which took me AROUND 4 HOURS the first time I played, and it still won't be over. Now, you win by... opening all the chests? Well, the good news is your main Lord has an innate lockpicking ability, so it's impossible to be fully screwed. The bad news... aside from him, you have ONE other character who can open them. So that's 2 at most, and the chests are really spread out, one requires you to go through the swamp, one is through a secret passageway inside a wall... and god help you if you didn't deploy this second character, or put her in the other ground 6 chapters ago.
    In short, this chapter took me almost 4 hours to finish my first time though. 4 HOURS! For a Fire Emblem chapter.

    "I hope so, I haven't played Fire Emblem 5 yet."
    Trust me, when you play that, you will wish you could murder civilians with your own hands, resent rewarping Dark Mages, pray for the games with limited range staves to return, and Chapters 17A and 22 will teach you that Satan's real name is Saias.
    Also, really glad to see you cover my (former) least favourite chapter in the series! I fucking hated that level, and I still hate it.
    *shudders* The name "Arcadia" still gives me nightmares.

      Chapter 22 I swear was designed to be hell though. The only saving grace is it's not the Manchester escape. While not hard (By FE 5 standards), it's still one of the rougher spots in the game by far.

      Chapter 17a is not nearly as mind-grinding as chapter 22, if you got some bolting tomes to kill the ballista it's actually really easy. While chapter 22 is featuring, 3 bosses all with total amount of 19 authority star aka 57 hit and evasion bonus to all enemies, a really big amount of mounted enemies, a bridge necessary to cross if you want to complete the chapter crumbling if you got near the boss, a ton of ballista, oh and you should not forget the 3 bosses 2 of them are very,very,very terrifying in there own way. Thank god you get a warp and a rescue staff an this map from villages.

      Mens I dunno, dealing with Misha, the Dark Mages, saving Sara, dealing with the new boss that pops up behind you and all of the crap Saias causes, 17A is still pretty bad. At least with 22, you can wait it out, mostly.

    I recently played HM for the first time and honestly, this chapter wasn't that bad.
    In my opinion, chapter 7 is way worse. At that point you have weak units against rather good enemy units, especially the cavaliers and dragon riders. Unlike CH14, CH7 overwhelms you with enemies in the first couple of turn. Most of them lance users and the only decent axe user you have at that point is Marcus. Also, physic priests.
    Also, there are three recruit-able characters in this map. 2 of which will die by turn 2, which when you can get to them. It's up to luck weather they survive or not.
    On top of that, there there are enemy reinforcements at your starting position. They are cavaliers which is bad in itself, but one of them has a Silver Lance. There is one more wave of reinforcements from the boss room, but it's easier to deal with.
    Overall:
    -Huge map with no place to tank, leaving you open
    -Dumb suicidal NPCs
    -Overpowered enemies
    -Long range healers at this point in the game
    -Asshole reinforcements
    When I think of this chapter, Arcadia seems almost relaxing. Don't get me wrong, I still think Arcadia is bullshit, but not as hard as this or some other chapters.

    • @Boosmerrygoround
      @Boosmerrygoround Před 8 lety +11

      I never had a hard time with Noah or Jerrot getting killed. Noah spawns closer to your own units, unlike Jerrot and Treck who spawn closer to the enemy's units. I can usually get Noah and Jerrot as soon as they spawn (I use Marcus and Allance to get Jerrot). Treck on the other hand is completely surrounded by enemy units, and is slightly farther away than Jerrot. He's going to die before he can even move. He's a huge hassle to save, and saving him makes the chapter even harder.
      As cruel as it sounds, the chapter is much easier if you just let Treck die as it distracts some of the enemies. Maybe Sue or Shanna could make it easier to rescue him, but those two are total burdens in this chapter.
      The cavaliers in the back are annoying but thankfully there's a horseslayer in one of the villages so while they're still a threat they're a tame one. I always make sure Marcus has a D in axes so he can use the halberd by chapter 4. The healers can go fuck themselves. They always heal the most obnoxious enemies too (the wyverns and mercenaries). There's also mages, and the only units with good res at this point are Marcus, Jerrot, who can still get criticalled by the ones with thunder(which takes like a third of his health away if they do), and Ellen who can't even fight yet.
      Don't underestimate the soldiers and archers either. They may be stepping stones most of the time, but with all the other threats these jerks can just sneak up and kill somebody when you least expect it. There may only be two mercenaries, but mercenaries are always obnoxious cunts to fight.

    A few extra things to note:
    1) The "Sophia-only Guiding Ring" is just plain cruel. Without using the secret shops, there are a total of 4 guiding rings for up to 8 units that use them. One of them is here and one of them is in the very last chapter before endgame, by which point if you're still using unpromoted units, what the hell is wrong with you? If you know of the secret shop, it's not so bad, but if you don't, I hope you know which mages you want to use...
    2) 08:28 Hahaha, oh you wish. It wouldn't be IntSys if they did not deliver the dick move of dumping a small army of brigands (+2 Berserker bosses) where you start.
    3) 11:12 So let's recap the perfect storm of pain that Intsys has delivered up to this point: Fog of War; Desert movement restrictions; 2 weak characters, one of whom can barely move, the other one can get one-rounded by...well, ANYTHING in this level; A metric ton of asshole reinforcements where you start the level; Generally powerful enemies; Status and healing assholes.
    4) 12:21 But wait, there's more! Hidden items in the desert! Three in particular are extremely important to grab: The Silver Card, the Boots and the Guiding Ring (Read point 1 of this comment). Everything else, while nice to get, is not really important (Might as well grab the Talisman as it's just to the west of where you start)
    5) 13:40 Okay, now THAT'S a dick move by the game! I didn't even know the FoW went away after the 25 turn limit is up.
    6) A chapter with two bolting assholes is considered "Boring"? Alongside an annoying gimmick...

      The original incarnation of Idunn was basically lunatic dangerous, because she wielded demonstone that gave her serious stat boosts and which made her essentially impervious to physical attacks (and even to magic if she stepped on a tile that boosted her resistance by 10) and only Roy and Fae could damage her. I'm guessing they removed the demonstone from her purely because she'd be unkillable for the most part if Roy's and Fae's weapons broke (or well, you would be able to kill her with either lucky Eclipse, or with an armada of ranged light brand attacks, but that would likely come at the cost of deaths of multiple units no matter what you did).

    @VanessaVersus Před 9 lety

    So glad you covered this, especially after I mentioned it in the comments of the last episode. Though I think there's a couple of things you missed. Firstly: Hard Mode. Arcadia is a completely different beast on Hard Mode thanks to the enemy bonuses. Extra range and hit on the Sleep/Silence assholes. The dragons are tougher, more powerful, and harder to double. Silver Lance Wyvern Lords can fly at you out of nowhere and gank your squishier units in a single hit. And since you NEED mages on this map... Yeah. Plus there's way more brigands, and the boss comes with 18 AS. Good luck doubling him while you're on a timer.
    And while it's not quite as big of an asshole as Arcadia, 14x is still a pain in the ass for its disappearing land trick and the boss using Bolting while you're forced to circle around him to actually get to him. With Bolting not being stupid heavy in this game, there's a fair chance he might actually double, and on Hard Mode, that's potentially two hits from a 22 magic attack you can't do shit about. You can try sending a Pegasus Knight into Bolting range to sponge hits while your crew holds back, but they'll get rushed by other units and of course, the whole disappearing land thing forces you to press on. Plus, Pegs are fast, so they won't get doubled, meaning they HAVE to take five turns of Bolting.
    Also, Sophia can "predict the future", and yet didn't have the foresight to stay out of this battle. Brilliant.

    ~Reposting this here as I don't think you saw it before~
    Hey, I'm extremely new to Strategy RPGs. So, uhh... do you recommend a game for me to try first, whoisthisgit?
    As long as it isn't PS3/4 or XBOX 360/1, I could probably get it.
    It's just... a genre I haven't ever gotten into. My first experience with SRPGs was Fire Emblem on the Wii when I was quite a bit younger. When my axeman died and didn't come back to life like, say, Luigi did, it kind of prevented sleep that night for me.
    That was a traumatic experience at the time.
    Thus, I have not played an SRPG since.
    I'm looking for a beginner's SRPG. I'd rather not have permanent death, but I'll still play it if it does have permanent death.
    Those are my only guidelines, and I'd figure that I'd ask you about this as you seem very experienced with the genre.
    Thanks!

    • @whoisthisgit

    The reason why Cecilia's stats are shit is probably because when she fought Zephidel, it would have been easier for the programmers to make her have bad stats so that he could "knock her out" without a problem for that one cutscene. Sophia has no excuse though.

  • @Woxominal2222
    @Woxominal2222 Před 9 lety +3

    Hey git, how easy or difficult would you say it is to get into Fire Emblem? It seems to be pretty complex, with all these different town and people names, all these important areas and nations to remember, lots of people, building up support and links between characters with conversations and stuff...the battle system seems pretty complex too. And to top it all of, all the names are medieval, or whatever you wanna call 'em, and I was never good with remembering those.
    I just wanna know because when I was younger, I played Radiant Dawn on the Wii and I didn't know what the fuck was going on with the story. It's been 6/7 years, but I'm afraid the same thing will happen again, with me not being able to keep up with anything...

    • @whoisthisgit
      @whoisthisgit  Před 9 lety +2

      It's not too easy, it can take some time for the games to really sink their claws into you, but once you start to understand how the stats work and have more of an understanding of the plot, the characters and the world, it's amazing. Radiant Dawn is also a sequel game to Path of Radiance, so it's probably not the best game to start with.

      @Woxominal2222 Před 9 lety +2

      Well, that's good to know. I guess I'll get to Sacred Stones on my 3DS now...
      I heard it's the only completely self-contained Fire Emblem game, so while that disappoints me, it could also be good for getting up to the story, dealing with an isolated universe instead of an interconnected one. XP

      @maesejesus Před 9 lety +3

      Being Self-contained is not as bad as you may think.
      At least that way you don't see characters being ruined or flanderized in sequels or prequels, or have the feeling that the story was cut in two to secure a continuation, for example.
      Or just fuck up a prior game to use it's lore and story for making more money, lol.

    Also this is something kinda...ironic I noted. Both of your WLE chapters for FE have a character that starts out extremely weak and joins at that weak state mid/late game. (12 being Nino and this one being Sophia). But the actuality is that they turn out to be ridiculously strong if they're able to kill people. Sophia turned into one of my best units in my (admittedly only) playthrough of the game. That Nino-esque CON didn't help her using Apocolypse...but she blew Ray out of the water.
    I can't remember if I've had an FE run where Nino was able to catch up. If anything...I'd be saving the Afa's Drops for her at that point and use them for up to 35 insane levels.

      33, because you only gain 19 levels to level 20 if you are at level one

    This is why I can't get into this series. I mean, I get true endings being toigh to get or for people eho replay the game, all this Guide Dang It stuff just rubs me the wrong way. How am I supposed to enjoy a playthrough when I *know* I'm screwing myself over for not constantly consulting a guide? I even play roguelikes amd fail to see the charm here, gameplay wise.
    The stkry seems solid but not my cup of tea, so I'll leave that part be. And good visuals. Very good.

    Have you played FE5 by now? I'm just interested.
    And oh yes this chapter sucked. And I can't understand that they didn't considered to give Sophia at least a level close to promotion. And... at least a chance of doubling. She is supposed to be a halfdragon after all.

    Getting the gaiden chapters are always a stressful endeavor but the gaiden chapters themselves are always relaxing in comparison.

    FE5 is difficult, but in a fair, rewarding sense. Everything in FE5 is cool and fun... except fatigue. but FE5 is cool as because of the crusader scrolls, any unit is viable as they alter growth rates. Except archers. Archers suck no matter what. now, FE14:Conquest... it's the best out of the three, but that doesn't mean the map design is annoyingly stupid.

      Chapter 12, I bullshit it. I really rushed through the map to get to the end and I was also trying to recruit Cath but, I realized, my only mage was a weak Lillina and Roy had my Wyrmslayer so I had to carry him back. I messed up but, I had a save on the virtualboyadvance to restart the process easily.

    I know I'm getting tedious now, but I just had a thought, It's likely that they may just remove the gaiden chapter's and make them mandatory chapter's if they feel like it, but then the remake of Mystery of the Fire Emblem Book 2 still had the whole collect all the gemstones for the fire emblem before fighting Hardin or you no get the final few chapter's so maybe. who knows, I'd go with the first option of just removing the bad ending and making the weapon collecting chapter's mandatory even though I'd love just having the option to get them anytime I wish if I unlock the requirements and the requirements being abit more forgiving to tell you the truth

    hmm i had wyrmslayer in this chapter with over 10 more uses left so my swordmaster killed the northwest wyverns and the manakete in two turns while i led my lilina southeast
    but yeah i also used milady to deal with mercenaries and such, however with a slim lance to double hit them because she had enough str to kill them within a single battle using slim lance in my game
    got quite lucky with defense too, none of them could do any damage to her
