  • In the land of gaming, jumping is one of the basic abilities you'll have in most genres, especially if you find yourself in a platform game.
According to Wikipedia, Jumping or leaping is "a form of locomotion or movement in which an organism or non-living (e.g., robotic) mechanical system propels itself through the air along a ballistic trajectory. Jumping can be distinguished from running, galloping and other gaits where the entire body is temporarily airborne, by the relatively long duration of the aerial phase and high angle of initial launch." Er, yeah, okay...
Despite its prominence in ficitional video games, you don't exactly see many people leaping around constantly, unless you live at the circus or something.
Perhaps this is why I've turned into a jumpaholic whenever the option is available to me - I struggle to keep my fingers off the button for more than a few seconds.
But as long as it's not hurting anyone and I'm having fun, it shouldn't matter how often I leap around, right?... Right?

I learned a lot of this and other parts of the game just by experimenting and here are some fun facts about it
-You can discard the nitro at the little metal things on the Walls of the difficult sections
-You can actually kill the lizardmen in the tight rope section by using the holy water sub weapon
-Most "Intelligent" enemies will not respawn because attacking you will kill them too ( as seen with the zombie on the stair case) only living armors skeletons and the aforementioned block everything lizardmen.
-The Bone pillars in the cog wheel section only spawn in hard mode same with the lizardman atop the shortcut of the tight rope section
-Exhausting the dialogue of the self aware lizardman in the other side of the nitro room will save you a lot of trouble
-Skeleton Motorcycles can still spawn on Carrie's route and are trickier to evade if you are not careful
-Some areas lock themselves until you kill all the enemies ( like the first vampire area), you can hear a small metal slide sound after entering a room and again after killing all the enemies

The fan game "Toadette Strikes" has its own level centered around not jumping. "No Jumping Allowed" doesn't make Toadette explode if she jumps, but it does disable jumping, forcing you to navigate a deadly obstacle course without the jump. (However, it has no restrictions on throwing, bouncing, swimming or flutter-kicking...)

If you're addicted to jumping, you ought to try out Morrowind. Jumping becomes among THE fastest non-instant teleport-ways to travel around, once you get your acrobatics skill high enough. Add a sprinkling of magic and you can easily just leap all over the countryside and get from one town to another in a minute or less.

Ah yes, this dreaded part. I played the original Castlevania 64 where you had to dodge the Skeleton Bikers to get back to that room with the magic seal with the Nitro. I didn't even attempt that run until after I had removed the magic seal on the wall. Funny enough, you also have to collect a Mandragora and bring it to the wall (and another wall you have to blast with the Nitro, but at least it's much closer by and doesn't have any real bad parts) and of course the game won't let you carry both, which means lots of running back and forth. At least you can jump around with the Mandragora; it doesn't blow you up.

Then in Elden Ring, they added a jump button, and your horse can jump, too. I'm willing to bet there's going to be a lot of tarnished ones pogo-sticking their way across the Lands Between.

One of the worst things is that you also have to remember that you need to remove the protective magic seal _before_ detonating the Nitro/Mandragora on the wall. Just charge up a level 3 fireball or magic missile. Thunder ball? I mean it does have electrical properties at level 3. But the cog section is way easier as Carrie or well there's also just tossingg a level 3 axe or holy water would do but axes might be better since they arc. One more thing people took issue with when it comes to Castlevania 64. I could see not allowing jumping, but no hits at all? And there's more enemies on the way back than there were originally? This should qualify it for one of the Worst Levels Ever.
Jumping is normally useless in most MMORPGs, but it's always there, and always something you can't help but use. Be it World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Wildstar or The Old Republic, I can't resist, especially when I'm just passing time waiting for my teammates to show up for a raid or boss. WoW even had flip animations, and I think there was one spot in the Echoing Caverns where you had to jump a gap or fall down to a lower level.

I'm also a fan of moments where games strip you of something important, whether that be your arsenal or a part of your core kit. It's a nice check to see if you're over relying on something or if you can handle a major handicap. It's probably where "No ____" challenges originated from. Showing that you don't need to rely on something the game usually gives you is incredibly satisfying. For a good example, try beating a Mega Man game with only the Mega Buster.

Shield jump, ledge jump, short jump, full jump. You can even jump out of reflector if it hits a projectile. UP-tilt, UP-air, UP-smash all the good moves go up. And it's so noncommital because of his fall speed. I have jump mapped to 3 different buttons and the stick. I tried switching to meta knight because what's better than 2 jumps? Six! But then I jumped and it took like 2 seconds to land again and it was terrible.

Within a Deep Forest has a few segments where you have to deal with balls (characters) that have significant weaknesses to deal with. One involves using a glass ball, which has a surprisingly high bounce and can pass through lasers unharmed, but uniquely shatters if falling from too great of a height. Another involves getting past a creature who eats any ball you bring to it for its abilities... so you bring the weakest and most useless ball which it lets past, needing to navigate a tunnel that is trivial to overcome with any other ball.

You have to carry a canister of highly explosive gas up a series of lifts and ramps while dodging flame jets and a handful of enemies, and the slightest drop will detonate the canister.
