Ahh the golden era when top WTA players reached GS final!

    • @secrets.295
      @secrets.295 Před 2 měsíci +1

Not really. It was the era where if Serena didnt reach the final, maybe Sharapova or Azarenka could win. It was all about Serena. The best era was the 00s. Williams Sisters, Henin, Clijsters, Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Mauresmo, etc. Sooo many great players. Even players like Hantuchova, Dementieva, Petrova, etc. Players who never won a Grand Slam were very talented too. If they were born a bit later and played in the 2010s they would have won a couple of GS for sure. 2010s was an era where the womens game was revolving. It was all about power and ending the point ASAP. It was an era full of flat shots with very little spin. It creates a lot of unforced errors and there were a lot of inconsistencies in their results. Serena was one of only a few that realized you can't always hit hard flat shots all the time. She added more spins to her game and it works like magic. Come the 2020s players have already realized that's not the way to go. More players started to play with more spins, and they realize ending the points ASAP is not really the best way to win.

      don’t be so completely ridiculous.
Serena hit consecutive FOREHAND WINNERS to save match points in the 2005 Australian Open. she is hitting 3 times as many forehand winners as Sharapova in this match.
this is nothing to do with Sharapova. Serena has a heavier weight of shot (and their top speeds were never comparable). Serena is also more aggressive ballstriker, hitting x2 to x4 as many winners in their matches. Michael Joyce (Sharapova’s coach from circa 2003 to 2010) said exactly the same thing. their matches are (were) entirely predicated upon what Serena does on the court.

@@lloydwhitty6780 Steffi leads Serena in almost every possible stat.
      Slams won:
      Serena - 23/77 (29.8%)
      Steffi - 22/54 (40.7%)
Steffi is the only player in history to win all 4 slams and an Olympic gold in a single season (1988). She won a whopping 21 Slams in only 9 years (1987-1996) before winning her final one 3 years later. She also made 13 straight slam finals at one point and had FIVE 3+ Slam seasons. Serena has only had two 3 Slam seasons and her longest final stretch was four. It took Serena 21+ years to win 23 Slams and Steffi 12 to win 22.
      Overall titles:
      Serena - 74/236 (31.3%)
      Steffi - 107/223 (47.9%)
Additional notes: Steffi had 5 seasons in which she won 10 or more titles, including a season in which she won 14 (1989). Serena has had one such season (2013). Even though Steffi played less tournaments than Serena, she won 33 more titles.
      Win-Loss record:
      Serena - 843-147 (85.1%)
      Steffi - 902-115 (88.7%)
Steffi has had a 90+ win % in TEN seasons compared to Serena's 6. Moreover, over a 4 year period in 1987-1990, Steffi recorded 305 wins compared to only 12 losses and won 9 out of 12 Slams, an unprecedented level of dominance never before or since seen on a tennis court. She then had ANOTHER dominant period in 1993-1996 in which she won 235 matches and lost only 18, winning 10 of 14 Slams she competed in. Serena has never displayed such dominance at any point in her career.
      Weeks ranked at #1:

      Year-End #1s:

Winning record over players who have been ranked in the top 10:
      Serena - 427-177 (78%)
      Steffi - 452-91 (83%)
      Olympic singles medals:
      Serena - 1 gold (2012)
      *Steffi- 1 gold (1988), 1 silver (1992)*
Steffi is also in the top 2 best players of all time on all surfaces, while Serena lags considerably behind Evert, Graf, Court, Seles, Henin and even Sanchez Vicario on clay. Steffi is also the only player in history to win all slams at least four times and the only player to defend each major at least once.
Steffi achieved more than Serena despite retiring at the age of 30. One Slam more for Serena simply isn't enough to overshadow all of Steffi's amazing accomplishments and records. She still is, without a doubt, the greatest female tennis player of all time. Serena's fixation on slams and complete disregard of every other event will hurt her in the long run as far as the GOAT debate is concerned. She simply was never able to achieve the level of dominance and consistency like Navratilova, Evert and especially Steffi.

@@PravoslavniVitez Serena has a gold in doubles and she and Venus have 14 grand slam titles and the career grand slam in doubles. The fact remains that Serena has more grand slam singles titles than Steffi. It doesn’t matter length of time. Still ranked in the top 10 and she’s almost 40. Until Serena got close to breaking the record, no one talked about Court. Everyone knows that 11 of her titles were against amateurs. 2021 and people still don’t want to acknowledge her achievements. I hope that she finally breaks the record so you people can shut up once and for all. For the record, Serena has 4 gold medals.

    • @PravoslavniVitez

@@lloydwhitty6780 Doubles and mixed doubles are irrelevant when discussing the greatest of all time since they are a completely different discipline. If you wish to cherry pick and include doubles in the GOAT debate then Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova absolutely own Serena in that department having 64 and 59 Grand Slams respectively compared to Serena’s 39.
Again, the fact Serena won ONE more Slam than Steffi despite playing for TEN more years does not make her greater, on the contrary. ALL of Steffi’s career stats are superior to Serena and she showed a level of sustained dominance and consistency that Serena was never able to display in her entire career.
Steffi spent ten consecutive years ranked inside the top 2, 8 of which were at #1. Between 1987 and 1990 Steffi had a monstrous 305-11 record (97%) and made 13 consecutive Slam finals, winning 9 of them including 5 in a row and 4 in the same year. She won the Golden Calendar Slam in 1988 by winning all four majors and the Olympic gold in Seoul, the single most impressive feat in the history of the game and something nobody has been able to do before or since.
Williams is one of the greatest for sure, but her career stats pale in comparison to the likes of Graf, Evert, Navratilova and Court, all of whom won way more titles than her and were much more dominant in their respective eras. Steffi though still towers above them all as the greatest tennis player of all time, male or female.

I think this was Maria's last good shot at Serena she was in her second prime at this point in between her two french titles and this was arguably her best surface. Serena just had a perfect clay season this year and wouldn't budge and inch. By the AO final in 2015 and qf the next year Maria was coming out of her prime with all the health problems , and didn't stand a chance. By USO 2019 Maria was 32 and couldn't hang in it, and although Serena's age it was a wipe for her.
