Years later this is still one of my favorite matches from Serena! The quality of offense and defense from both players was top tier. It was an insane battle and Serena’s ability to raise her level even further….👌🏼

That match was crazy/insane. Preferred it over the final!
I was following the match on the Roland Garros website and Kuznetsova had points to go up 3-0 in the third. So nerve wracking but Serena pulled through and then demolished Sharapova in the final. When commentators tried to play up a non-existent rivalry before their matches like Mary Carrillo I was like girl please.

What a great battle as usual between these two!! Kuznetsova always brings Serena a huge challenge. So glad that Serena was able to overcome the threat and win the title eventually!

This is one of my fave tournaments for Serena. I'm so glad she pulled through this 3rd set, because it gave us a really strong quality final. And this outfit is in my top five all-time. So sleek and the color is so regal against this surface.

Sveta, one of the very few players who have the fitness and the shotmaking ability to go toe-to-toe with Serena on a regular basis (AO'09 QF, RG'09 QF, RG'13 QF, China Open'04, Miami '16 off the top of my head). To me she is an underachiever in the women's game even with 2 GS to her credit.
She choked this match away! Kuznetsova had no game plan, she should have kept the ball low as possible, that's Serena's achilles heel especially on clay!

@@chillguy102 Svetlana kept playing the ball high and kept playing the ball at her hitting zone!!! And that's a big no no in gravel! You need to make your opponent move and keep the ball as low as possible to force your opponent in difficult positions.

If serena is having trouble, 99% of the times she executes her plan B and if that doesn't work , plan C, she is the only player I KNOW who gears up her game in between critical moments. This match is a perfect example. Confident in the first set, then Kuz started chugging and playing great tennis, going behind serena's back, then coming forward for serena's 2nd serves and poaching every ball, in the third set tho, Serena found her kryptonite, notice how serena keeps on making a combination of short+baseline shots to confuse kuz, and throws in drops shots in between. Thats serena for you. Finally, she got kuznetsova off balanc and kuz tripped . Serena has a beastly mental strength.
Svetlana really showed why she won the French open in 2009 and beating Serena in the quarter final. Svetlana thought the trick would work by going for a bathroom break like she did in 2009 before the third set. But in 2013 it didn't work Serena turn it up and kept fighting.

I would not say so. Serena was brutal. You can say she did not play in the second set, but she recovered very well in the third, and was humiliating her opponent.
