Arrax was one of the smallest of the dragons. He and his dragonrider, Luke Velaryon, died in an exchange with Vhagar and her rider, Aemond Targaryen.
Vhagar, nicknamed Queen of All Dragons, is the largest dragon in the realm, twice the size of Caraxes. Her scales are a deep jade. Named after a god of Old Valyria, she was ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen during the conquest of Westeros, and later claimed by Laena Velaryon. After Laena's death, Aemond Targaryen answered Vhagar's call, becoming her rider, much to the dismay of Laena's children.
Lucerys Velaryon:
"Luke"
Lucerys Velaryon, also known as "Luke," was the secondborn son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon. He was heir to Driftmark, but questions of his legitimacy left him fighting for his birthright. He was betrothed to his cousin Rhaena to strengthen the alliance between House Targaryen and House Velaryon.
When sent as a messenger to secure support for his mother as queen, Lucerys was killed in a struggle with his uncle, Aemond.
Like his elder brother Jace, Luke faced questions of his true parentage, with rumors that he is the son of Ser Harwin Strong. In a fight with Aemond, Luke stabbed and blinded his uncle.
Personal Item:
Lucerys wore the colors of House Targaryen when he agreed to serve as his mother's envoy to Storm's End. It was while fulfilling this duty that the young dragonrider unfortunately met his demise.

When his older brother was crowned king, Aemond forged an alliance with House Baratheon by agreeing to marry Floris Baratheon. While riding Vhagar, he killed his nephew Luke and the dragon Arrax, an action that may prove to have great consequences.

If the dragons have the ability to feel their riders emotions, Vaghar felt Aemonds hatred towards Lucerys and Arrexes felt Lucerys’ worry and fear. Both dragons acted accordingly.

To me it's not an illusion, they do control them. I think here Aemond took Vhagar for granted without fully understanding the nature of dragons.
@user-mr9mr5qc5q not fully control... u can't fully control any wild animal. In the book Fire & Blood, they are harder to control & pare with. In season 2, there is a scene when Danny is petting the dragon, and he strikes at her. Sure, Dorgon was going for a half eaten lamb , but still. Even Jorah says to Danny after " Dragons Khaleesi , they can never be fully controlled."
@@Josh86_925 What Jorah could know? He never saw a dragon before Daenerys' and Daenerys herself didn't know about them, they were long gone even before she was born.
But in the times of HOD they did have some knowledge about them, they raised many dragons.
@user-mr9mr5qc5q , I'm sure the show creators & writers put those 2 lines in both series for a reason. In the book, there are a couple of dragons that have never been tamed , and Targaryen's believe they can't be , like Cannibal.
It’s crazy how at 3:16 aemond hears lucerys and realizes that he isn’t in control of arrax and then looses control of Vhagar as well. Shows how much of an accident it was and how aemond just wanted to scare lucerys but vhagar scared arrax into attacking her so vhagar got mad, killed them and was disobeying aemond.
Also, after vhagar eats arrax it sounds like she roars “whaaaaat?” After aemond keeps saying no no no. 😂 3:49
In Books, Aemond wanted to kill but also he takes the eyes from Lucerys deadbody.

But after watching this scene hundreds of times I'm like... this is about the same as trying to intimidate your school bully with a nuclear missile launcher. There's like a 95% chance of a tragic outcome here, followed by more devastating consequences.

That's why Aemond checked on Arrax's falling carcases if maybe Vhagar missed Lucerys's position when she bit Arrax, but then he saw that Lucerys's body didn't fall with the rest of Arrax that's why he looked back at Vhagar shitting himself because Lucerys was actually right in the middle of the bite range and now crushed inside Vhagar's mouth

@Tyffanie haha It wouldnt. Dreamfyre is no easy to take down is much bigger and older than Caraxes. Meleys and Sunfyre already fight each other and Meleys dies and Sunfyre lives. Tessarion would easily take down Vermax and Moondancer. Meraxes and Vhagar would be perfect opponents but WHO would be riding Meraxes is the key factor. It would be easy at all.

So history was prejudiced... they called Aemond the Kin-slayer over what was in truth an accident. He tried to frighten his nephew, causing Arrax to lash out and blast the older Vhagar in an attempt to defend Lucerys. Arrax's insolence towards an alpha dragon like Vhagar was enough to trigger her kill drive, and thus she asserted herself in the most brutal manner imaginable; killing the younger dragon and his rider despite Aemond's pleas to stop when he realized it went too far.

Well that's what happens when you treat one of the largest, deadliest dragons in Westeros history like a plaything. Was it an accident, yes, but Aemond was a fool for using Vhagar that way.

@@mumihp its been explained by either Martin or the showrunners that the book is a biased in-universe perspective on Targaryen history whereas the show is presenting what actually happened. Look it up if you wish, I personally prefer the show's take.

In dem Buch starb Laena auf der Treppe, bevor sie Vhagar erreichen konnte. Hier wurde Vhagar befohlen, ihren eigenen Reiter zu töten. Das hat sie wahrscheinlich tief berührt. Ihre beiden anderen Reiter, Visenya und Baelon, ritten nicht auf ihr, als sie starben. Es ist ein weiteres Beispiel dafür, wie die Adaption die Dramatik und das Pathos der Originalgeschichte steigerte.

Even domesticated animals will defer to their baser instincts if pressed. Vhagar chasing Arrax caused the smaller, younger dragon to panic and lash out at his attacker and Vhagar's own instincts took over and compelled her to chase and kill the one who threatened/challenged her. There's also the fact that neither has really been bonded to their dragon for that long.

From what I know, they communicate with dragons in High Valyrian. Maybe Aemond indeed wanted to kill Lucerys, that's why he used common language and not High Valyrian.
It is very common that multilingual people might start speaking another language when under pressure or stress, they lose control of the language they're speaking and start speaking in their native language as a result

Lucerius the idiot: let's attack Vaghar one of the most powerful dragons 😂😂
His dragon attacked Vhagar because he was panicked by the chase and lashed out instinctively, as most animals are wont to do if attacked. Lucerys was shouting for him to stop but he'd given into his instincts, as did Vhagar in reply when Arrax attacked her. Both dragons' natural instincts won out over their riders' commands.
