  • A brief history of Pontiac performance from mid 1950's to 1960. Jim Wangers describes historical milestones. Jim Wangers was responsible for providing a 1964 GTO to Car & Driver with a special 421 engine instead of 389. Amazing performance but not a true production model.

I have a question for anyone with some info. I have a print that I had framed in the mid 90's or so. Its a Jim Wangers signed Ace Wilsons Royal Pontiac with a red 1964 GTO and a blue and white 69 Royal Bobcat GTO, only 1000 prints made...I can't find any of these online. Just wondering what this might be worth?

    Wagner was superb engineer.
I worked at pontiac headquarters cleaning offices.
I was a kid back than.
I know for a fact John DeLorean was the first one in his office and last one to leave
    As general manager of pontiac.
Him and Wagner modified a pontiac le man's on the wash rack..lifting vehicle up in the air to identify stock GM parts of the shelf to make pontiac le man's the .monster on Woodward Ave. It became the GTO or the street goat. Winning street races everywhere. The Way DeLorean and Wagner created the Le Man with stock parts allowed them to circumvent the GM upper brass who had an Erick to prevent any race cars in the lineup. Just pure genius. These two men rolled up their sleeves on a lift wash rack and created a winning product for GM. The GTO.

...to continue. But for example I like the new Mustang. I hope it sell well. Daytona year 2014: "and on the line to start are Mustang, GTO:s, Charger, Chevelle - all new built cars. What a challenge. What a race!
    Think about it.

I have a feeling Pontiac will come back once GM gets it right again.

    Peter:
Unfortunately, Obama Motors has killed the historic Pontiac. One reason the neo-GTO did not make it was the body style (too plain). There was a chance, but Pontiac killed itself with this late version of the GTO. There was performance, but the body lacked excitment.
If you look through late 1960's American car performance magazines, the spirit still lives.
Thank you for your compliments to this past American Golden Age.

Didn't have a choice. Really it should have been Buick, since Buick had dipped it's toes into Cadillac's area. The performance had been taken out of Pontiac, and it's sales went away, and buyers cash also went away with the American manufacturing being moved overseas over the years.

@HistoryKrell Pontiac will return. It's up to you Americans. Make a real GTO burnout outside the GM headquater so the Chairman & Executives of GM will wake up.
Have you seen the prototype From Ford and a Turkish car maker to replace the New York cabs, taxi? If they will turn that to reality you will hear in the future action films: "follow that cube!"
Like the Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld recently said:"The problem with Amrican car industry is, that they don't produce American cars anymore"

@HistoryKrell I miss Pontiac, but if it wasn't for Obama, there wouldn't be a General Motors at all. If we did the Romeny way there wouldn't be a GM. I hate to see Pontiac go too, but I rathere settle for the less of two evils: Some GM or no GM.

Stop blaming Obama for Pontiac demise. Gm had too many divisions anyway. Saturn and GMC didn't help. There was too much overlap. Buick and Cadillac were is 2 luxury division. Something had too be closed. Pontiac had NO performance products to define it in the end. Why keep it going?
