Range Report: Sig Sauer P239

- In this Range Report I shoot and review a gun that seems to have a stellar reputation but is a discontinued model. This is the Sig P239. It is a single stack 9mm pistol designed primarily for the concealed carry market and is a more rounded version of the P225. This video documents my personal thoughts, opinions and experiences with this pistol. Yours may vary.

Sweet little thing, accurate and controllable recoil. Originally bought it for my ex. Wife’s gone but gun’s here. So I would say it’s reliable.
Lol! One of the best gun stories I have heard.
I’m not sure if you fired that firearm yet in 40 but it is the best 40 caliber handgun ever made.
The 40/357 sig version is much better built than the 9mm re-release.
Surprisingly it has less felt recoil than any other Sig on the market.
It didn’t have the ammo capacity of the P229 but it is so much more accurate. It has less felt recoil, has a smooth trigger out of the box, and felt great in the hand.
The issue with this weapon is the feed ramp. Stock Sig barrels suck out of the box due to ammo compatibility resulting in failure to feed with some ammo.
This is usually fix by polishing/reworking the feed ramp. What’s messed up is that Sig would charge you a premium for the same service.
I use this as my carry firearm in 40 and use XS big dot sights with it.
I have not, but I would like to.
Not too many of the P239s came with nickeled controls like that one. I'm pretty sure that particular model of P239 you have there was a special release from the early 2000s (one of several hundred?) which i think they called the 'concealed carry package'.
Came in 9mm with nickeled controls, an IWB holster and 3-dot Novak style sights, and 1-8rd mag and 1-10rd mag.
I'm going by memory. I bought the same pistol around 2003 or so. And i still have it. Exactly 12,506rds fired (and counting) with zero malfunctions of any kind. And that's with very many types of both range and defense ammo. Its a solidly reliable handgun.
Wow! That is some great information! Thank you for sharing.
I have a safe full of SIG’s buy far my favorite is the 239. If I only could have one gun it would be my 239. Also the nickel Controls on that gun in the video must’ve been custom to the best of my knowledge. Sid never manufactured one that way although the one I have, I customized it the exact same way. I thought I was looking at my gun.
Great review thank you
Thank you so much for the information and the kind words.
Nice review....I own a 239 in 9mm. Its my most accurate 9mm and can readily ring a half-size silhouette at a measured 42 yards, off hand....superb trigger The P228 I carried on the job was equally accurate. Capacity? capacity is fine, but accuracy is final.
Fair point.
I was on target at 50 yards with my 9mm p239 last week at the range. I wasn't surprised... its the most accurate handgun I own.
I have the all black P239 in .40 S&W along with a matching .357 Sig barrel. My only regret is not having secured a matching 9mm aftermarket barrel. That caliber P239 has the full length slide serrations. The slide is also a bit beefier for the .40 and .357 models.
The original Sig grips did not fit my hands, but adding the aftermarket rubber Hogue grips transformed the P239 comfort for me. Many 239 owners switched to the rubber Hogues and experienced the same amazing fit.
Thankfully I have Sig 228 and Sig 229 both in 9mm to cover that caliber.
Thank you for a very through and balanced review of this acclaimed classic firearm. 👍🏻
Interesting. I am sorry you didn't get that barrel.
I have that pistol, bought it back in 1992 or 1993 in 40 caliber and I have a barrel for the Sig .357 caliber. Back at that time, Winchester developed the Black Talon in .40 caliber, I still have mine that I bought before they took them off the market.
Those are rare and collectible.
Are you referring to having the .357 barrel or the Black talons as rare and collectible?
This used to be my off duty/back up gun. I shot it better than my p226. Both were DOA 12lbs trigger pull. I'm glad I kept them and all the magazines.
That is great and I am glad it did, and still do, work so well for you.
Love, love, love my p239s. All in 40S&W or 357 Sig. My number one is a Scorpion in 357 Sig. My current carry is a DAK in 40S&W. Why no 9mm? Really, they're over built for a 9mm. They handle the 40/357 so well it's a shame to not take advantage of it. I've been a 357 Sig fanboy since 1997 but currently it pays to rock the 40. Right now, I can get for
Thank you for the thoughtful comment and I am glad there are other Sig fans out there.
The P239 that I shot was most accurate with 124 grain Federal and at 10 yards I could make a fist size hole in the center mass. The trigger reset is amazing and the recoil is very minimal for a smaller concealable pistol. It destroys the P365.
I do agree.
Hello sir! Great video. I bought my SIG 239 some years ago, low before you were born.... same one you have in the video which was a limited edition. I still carry it today. Funny, I bought a 229 new legion to dismantel it. But its okay, im not thrilled. Plus yes I get 15 rounds but its heavier and its Phoenix is the summer! Finding myself going back to my 239 to carry in the AZ heat but always have my SW 686 .357 in my car at all times. Stay strapped and safe out there all. :D
Thank you so much and I am so glad to hear that your pistol is working so well for you!
I have all of the original P-series metal pistols. With the exception, maybe, of the 226, the 239 is the most accurate. I don't know why, some kind of German mojo, I guess.
That is really cool! Sounds like you have a great pistol collection!
Just love the sig p series of pistols. Beautiful and maybe the best pistols ever made.
The P226 is about perfect.
Loved my Sig 239 SAS and it was never not enough gun. I absolutely regret selling it. Got caught up with 9mm not being enough in a single stack and I should play to it's strengths and get a good 9mm in double stack. Or so I told myself.
Sadly I never found that gun, to this day, the 239 is the best shooting 9mm I ever owned.
Just one day, it crushed my man bits for the last time when going to sit and I had enough.
Sounds like a love / hate relationship. However, I totally understand your points. I am sorry it got away.
I like the legacy slide. It matches my German 229. Cool video 👍
Thank you so much!
@@thetexasgunvault been a fan of the channel for quite a while now. Always enjoy watching 👍👍
I think the P239 is a beautiful gun. I bought one for my wife in 2015. She didn’t like it. Oh well, another gun for me.
I like how you think.
A bunch of co-workers 👮 bought them for off duty. We carried the P229 in .40 & 9mm on duty. 👍
Very cool and I am glad they worked well for you.
I was wanting to acquire a P225 about the time they discontinued it…sigh. I still have a P226, though, and love it.
I used to own a P239 and it is a gun I definitely regret selling. Like your P225 as well!
Thank you and I am sorry it was one that got away.
Oh ya have got to do a P SIG 225 REVIEW
I will.
The DA trigger is a great feature that strikers miss. Hold a gun on someone while waiting for the police, and a striker is a quarter inch pull at 5.5 pounds away from being a murderer. SIG's pro line (SP2022) proves they can put a polymer grip on a DA/SA pistol, and the P239 shows they can make it slim. Why not do both? Meanwhile only chunky Beretta Storms, HK P30 compacts and CZ P-07s are current production compact DA/SA pistols that have more capacity than the P239 but nothing else.
Very good point and observations.
its problem was it came out when high capacity was the thing capacity can be good but not when you waste ammo on one target and you have more attackers a lethal shot is whats needed and when I carry single stack I have extra mags remember the 86 FBI shoot out a lot of rounds fired and the shot that should have been first was done last and it cost several agents their lives training and practice are what makes a difference
Great point and perspective.
This was my back up gun for 15 years, unfortunately I was required to have the DA only model. Would love to switch it over to DA/SA and install the decocking lever and the silver accents trim. Can you recommend where to purchase switch over parts. Thx.
I would try Numerich gun parts. They have been really good for me at finding hard to get parts.
The Sig 239 was the first Sig bought many, many years ago. Fantastic CC weapon. I have the 40 and the 357 barrel and prefer the 40
I bet .357 runs well in it though.
@@thetexasgunvault Of course,it's a Sig!
Wait, nj has a hollow point ban? So it i hunt, i have to carry fmj ammo in it?
They have banned HP for personal defense. I can not say about hunting though.
Thanks for the great review!! I'm into this gun and I've been searching for relevant information. So if you don't mind, can you tell me the frame(without the grip panels) width of p239?
I wish I could. I no longer have the pistol in for review, so you might have to look it up online.
@@thetexasgunvault Aha... Thank you.
I'm looking for a 357 Sig barrel and mags for mine.
I have a P239 in 9mm and a P229 in 357 sig. I would like a P239 in 357 sig. Great guns a great video.
Thank you so much! It sounds like you have some nice pistols there.
You can probably find a 40 and get a Bar-sto barrel for it.
The 9mm version will not work with a 40/357 sig slide/barrel.
The slide and frame of the original 40/357 has a much better feel.
I'm a big fan of failing safely. Being a single stack, it's easier to carry extra mags. I follow the rule, 2 is 1, 1 is none. I don't want to find out at the wrong time that I need a 2nd because the baseplate broke or I dropped the mag on accident.
I would get it in .40 S&W, though.
An alternative would be the New York reload. That'd definitely follow the 2 is 1 rule, but mags lay flatter.
I totally understand and would agree with that philosophy.
I so regret selling my scorpion 239. I had a 357 barrell and 9 mm, such a sweet gun. Piece of advice for anyone who has any of the traditional sig guns. DO NOT EVER SELL THEM!!
I do agree with that advice and with most guns in general.
I sent my p239 to sig for a refresh and they put new xray sights on it, but they gave me the originals too. I love the xray sights though. They're so good.
Will never sell mine I’ve had it forever still my best handgun i hate glocks they were never a gun for me maybe for others but not me so deadly accurate my sig
Agree with the review except that I think they are beautiful. (Most did not have small parts of a different color - yuk!). I Bought a few back in the day. I think they were around $550 then if I recall. They are not tactical or duty. They are more pocket. The Sig dedicated DAO "SAS" Upgrades had much smoother double action trigger, although a long pull and beautiful wood grips. The only criticism of potential buyers that I recall was magazine capacity for the size of the gun, as you pointed out.. At that time though, technology was changing and peoples preferences were just beginning to shift from single stack, (thought to be more reliable), to double stack capacity. I don't think popping off a few rounds to gain the fire initiative was yet widely taught as tactics then.
Jason, consider this idea. Have a double rating system. One for how you think the gun is engineered, performs, quality, etc. And another rating for how it fits your personal preferences. Sometimes you delete points for a quality of a firearm that I would personally like about it. For example, I love the larger circumference of the masterpiece arms DS nine hybrid. Much respect - Love your channell
Thank you so much and I will definitely take your idea on the ratings into consideration.
So,i have one in .40 . Whats your advice? Keep it as a safe queen or carry it, use it , scratch it, scuff it and basically enjoy it?
I would enjoy it. It wouldn’t hurt to try to secure a few spare parts like an extra extractor and recoil spring. Having a really nice gun and never shooting it is like having a pretty wife and never giving her a kiss.
@johndilday1846 Great advice! Thanks!
The 40 version of the P239 is in my opinion the best 40 pistol ever made.
The recoil is less than my 9mm pistols.
Clean it, oil it up, train with it, and carry it with confidence.
It doesn’t have a lot of rounds, but if you busy fighting your firearm instead of controlling it then I feel those extra rounds are wasted.
watched your report on the M&P full size 22...10 +1 and the gun you used showed popping off 12 rounds???
Some of the mags appear to hold more although it was advertised as 10.
👍🏼
Thank you so much!
There is a reason it was dropped from the production line.
I believe the 229 is a better pistol. And easier to shoot well.
I think you are absolutely right.
ehhh... I like my p229 don't get me wrong. It's a great gun. But the p239 is more accurate for me. And I love the single stack for carry. I wish they would have made a p224 single stack, like a p234 perhaps!
Count me for "LIKE IT" P225 before p239.
I will!
P225 in 357sig with offset stacking. They'll never make it.
That would be cool!
Every hand gun gets compared to a Glock. I wonder why? hmmmmm
Because they are the most prolific pistol and most people have some familiarity with it. It creates a common baseline. Comparing a gun to a Steyr GB would not help a lot of people.
@@thetexasgunvault the High Point is prolific too. No one seems to compare guns to that one.
Because those are low quality.
Good morning, Jason. I am going to have to explore the whole Sig handgun thingy. They are very popular with the IPSC competition shooters. I am a hardened 1911 fan, with a few moments of skipping to the dark side with Glock ownership. By the way if you do a PMag giveaway, could make it a ten-round magazine. At least I may have a chance of getting one. Oops, just joking. And that pistol shoots better than the bloke holding it. I am giving you r review a score of 5 Roo's 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
LOL! Thank you as always Andrew! You are so kind to me and my channel. I always enjoy your comments and look forward to them.
Enjoyed your review as always. Sadly as a NJ resident magazine capacity advantages are basically null and void. We are heavily restricted to only 10 rounds.
