I bought a P226 Elite 40 cal and added a 357 barrel. Later I bought a 9mm barrel and spring and some 9mm mags. Perfect kit for defense and target.

40S&W is seriously under-appreciated now. It's a shame because defensive load options are excellent, availability is better than most except for 9mm, and out of the box it is capable of 357 Sig supersonic with just a barrel swap. Well, I enjoy mine. I had my Browning HP in 40S&W fitted for a 357 Sig barrel. Love it.

I just picked up a 1997 dated P229 .40 that came with a .357 barrel and original SIG ARMS case as well. What a sweet shooter! (Now the quest begins for an original manual...)

This is the gun and caliber that one shot stopped the would be church mass shooter in Texas. Sig P229 in .357 Sig. Very specific he used that exact gun.
back in the early 90's I broke by back and had the privilege of wearing a jacket similar to yours. Along with a few inserted titanium rods, I healed up pretty well considering the extent of my damage and long term effects.

I got my P229 from Buds. Used Red Box Reman. It is branded from the Newark Police Dept. The cops used 9 mm and Detectives used 40. Mine is a 40 and I am also seeking a 357 Sig barrel for it. I love the weapon and once again welcome your review! The 40 S & W is a very boldacious round that takes some getting used to. Very much up to the task however! Great job as usual Chris!

@@MarkSmith-nw4os I got my .357 barrel directly from Sig. It was in stock. My P229 was purchased around 2005 or so. I bought a matching leather holster made by Galco and it fits like a glove. It fits the gun so well I can carry it concealed and the grip doesn't stick out to reveal itself. I like the P229 because the lower is partly steel and part plastic. It's not completely plastic.
I have a 229 legion that I got for basically a cost of a lightly used nitron Coated 9mm 229. I love that gun; it’s bigger then my glock 19 (I wither carry 26/27/30) but man is it a friggin blast to shoot. The trigger reset is like microns short.

Sometimes (not that bad) but if I relax and let the gun flip a little I can repeatedly hit targets out past 50 or even 100 yards with a pistol. I am not looking for fast followup shots at 100 yards. The Sig P226 (new stainless slide) P229 and the H&K are heavy enough they shoot pretty nicely. The CZ75B .40 is a really sweet shooting .40 with all of it's righteous old school carbon steel mass behind it. That is a solid 50 yard+ pistol. I wish that CZ had put the full guide rods in their 9mm CZ75Bs. That seems to close up the groups a bit.
Sig pistol's are to me one of the best pistol's. I just brought a sig p229 357sig pistol, it came with 2 12 round mags and pistol case. lv it..
Don't worry too much about firing 357 through a 40 barrel. You get much less pressure because the barrel isn't sealed by the bullet. The gases go right past with much less noise. The bullet comes out quite slow and gets no spin from the rifling. It will keyhole every shot and you'll get a failure to extract. Trust me.

I have a P229 Enhanced Elite chambered in .357 SIG and 9mm (KKM barrel). They're great guns.
The 9mm Sig P229's actually went off of the P228 frames, they just swapped the stamped slides for the milled slides. So you could take a P229 in .40/.357 and swap the slide with a 9mm caliber conversion kit and the original 9mm P229/P228 mags would work but you couldn't take a 9mm P229 and swap it out with a .40/.357 P229 caliber conversion kit because the magazines won't fit because the magazines are larger than the mag well. Then they came out with the Sig classic P series E2 (E squared) models or "Enhanced Ergonomics" and they changed the slide contour of the P229's from the "Legacy" slides to match the rest of the P series guns (P220, P225, P226 and P228). They also ditched the 9mm P228/P229 frames and started using the .40/.357 frames and the larger external extractor. They went to a screwless slimmer grip, they also use the new P229-1 mags which are about the same dimensions of a .40/.357 mag so now you can use .40/.357 caliber conversion kits and the older P228/P229 9mm mags. The M11A1's are basically just a new P229 with older P228 grips and no rail. The DAK trigger is the Double Action Kellerman designed by Harold Kellerman which is a DOA with 2 different resets.
And somehow I ended up with a bastardized earlier narrow magwell frame, railed, with the newer style slide. It was factory reconditioned in a red box when I got it, so who knows what sort of life it had before I got it.
40s&w. Same chamber pressure roughly nut has higher bullet weight and faster pressure curve which is why it is known as snappy. It is not an high pressure cartridge. It gets an bad rap for this because of misinformation but it runs at similar pressures as 9mm.
9mm and 40sw have the same SAAMI max pressure. The 40 has more bolt thrust but it is not a higher pressure cartridge. .357 on the other hand is a 40ksi load and is the highest pressure common auto load pistol cartridge.

As much as I prefer the profile of the 226 and 220, the 229 is probably the best of all sigs in overall size and usability. Good review.
@Derrick K 9mm for sure. 40sw is very snappy in recoil and with modern ammo 9mm is nearly as good. For me 40sw seems to have a sharper recoil impulse than both 9mm and 45acp. However, it does depend on use. If I was a park ranger in the sierras or rockies, I would likely go with a 40sw, as the heavier bullet does hit harder or animals.
@Derrick K oh and I would jump on an M11-A1. I don't own one but would love to get one. And it would be in 9mm. The other big advantage to 9mm is cost and availability of ammo. It's even cheaper than 380 acp. For practice that means a lot more shooting for you.

Just found your channel, I subscribed immediately... I just purchased my first handguns, a Sig P320X Full size, now I wish I would have gotten a p229 in .40! I haven't fired the p320 yet as the indoor range requires a "new shooter" class with a .22lr handgun so I got a Taurus TX22 and put 100rds through it in the class.
On my next visit I will shoot the Sig, I'm sure it will be a big difference! Thanks for the video, lots of useful information. I hope your back is going well!

Not a damn thing wrong with the p320x. For a budget gun its more than perfect & quite comparable to say glock, walther & s&w not withstanding fanboyism/girlism. I'd suggest getting a 226 & or 229 anyway provided its within reason to do so. You won't regret any of them. If anything buying a 226/229 will not only give you new prospective, it might also set your standards higher & in the future you may not be so quick to buy polymers. Not that there's anything wrong with polymers. They clearly have there place & they're much more practical to carry as opposed to metal pistols from a cc perspective. That said be safe, enjoy your guns, assume every pistol is loaded & avoid fanboys who always have something negative to say about no particular brand.
@@nova68cutie Absolutely. And thanks for the reply, as a matter of fact that p320x full size never malfunctioned or had a single issue, however I did trade it for a Beretta 92x RDO Compact, as I wanted something all metal and smaller for carry, I really like that one.

Just bought a 229 in .40 at pawn shop I frequent. It was dirty and the tritium is dead but I got a deal I think for $450 out the door. Felt like a solid sidearm and I could not pass it up. Not a big fan of .40 so I'll probably get the .357 sig barrel. I've always wanted an M11A1 but I think it will suffice. This video helped scratch my need for info.

I think that's glocks appeal... Lighter, cost less, durable. Not be qualities by no means. But Sig's to me although more costly are unbeaten.. I own a P226 - 228 in 9mm & 229 in 40. Very high quality. Simple to operate tough gun.
I own a Glock 19 only because I see it as a lighter, cheaper carry piece that I wouldn't worry about if I had to replace it.

Excellent video on some of the history and specs of this Sig 229. I bet my hands and yours are around the same size. Could you comment on how you felt the grip was for you. Were you able to fit all of your hand on the grip. I'm on the fence about getting this or the 226 because of my need to have a good grip with my 3 other fingers and I know the 226 is slightly longer but the magazines for the 229 have a drop to them in the front to accommodate your pinky.

9mm has a cult following from what i hear, but thats why game wardens dont carry 9mm, for use against big game animals .40 at the minimum
@@wharris7594 idk if I'd say cult because 9mm's the mainstream carry caliber right now, especially for first-time shooters. If someone who's just starting to get into guns asks me what their first handgun should be, I'd say a 9mm or .22 LR if they're really recoil sensitive. As for me, I've just put a decent amount of rounds downrange with a lot of different calibers over the years, so I've been able to come to the conclusion as to what I want to use.
GREAT VIDEO Thanks for making it I just happened to noticed it appears like your recoil spring should of been replaced a while ago......I myself will never again hit the slide catch on my P229 .40 and use it as a Slide release by itself... I Always pull slide back from the top and hold slide catch lever down as I release it ..its one extremely fast move and you Don't put Any premature wear on any internal parts of the Firearm .......What made me bring this up is I heard the sound of and saw how extremely easy it was for you do it ...the sound was almost like a Soft Puff Pleasant Sound instead of The Horendous Loud Metal Slam Sound you get with a Fresh Spring and after replacement it will help to lessen the Recoil and muzzle flip movements i noticed after the shots.......After replacing the Spring store the Firearm with the slide racked back for a few days to help break in the Spring a little Quicker ....they are Stiff at First Thanks Again for the Great Video....PS....These are just my thoughts and I thought Id share them with You and All the Proud owners of The Sig Sauer P229 I really Hope you Don't take me the wrong way bringing this stuff up .....its information Ive heard from some Elder Friends of mine that really made sence to me and for the care and maintenance of this Fine Firearm also always have a backup spring in the case with the gun or in the cleaning kit Thank You Again Sir For making the time to do this GREAT VIDEO

It's a higher pressure thick wall brass a bit longer. You can neck down 40 SW but very little gripping short neck. It's base on 10mm and tried to match 357 Magnum performance. It's an exciting caliber and reliable in my book both in 229 and 226 like wise Glock and HK

Is 9mm equal to or superior to 357 Sig? Let’s think about that for ourselves for just a moment, shall we? I get it that some people pick a side and feel the need to defend their choice, but not to the extent of regurgitating pure nonsense that they themselves were misinformed on.
Some ammo manufacturers actually have loads that even surpasses the ballistics of traditional 357 magnum performance. Underwood's 357 SIG Gold Dot for example. Also because it’s a bottleneck cartridge it has the added benefit of feeding more reliably than other pistol rounds. It’s flat shooting and will punch through auto glass like it was butter.
It’s literally a 9mm projectile “except” because it’s 200-300 fps faster it penetrates most barriers as well as 10mm yet doesn’t over penetrate flesh, which is welcomed to aid in avoiding collateral damage.
It has a flatter trajectory that in turn makes it more accurate and potent at distance. Though the penetration is no greater than 9mm in flesh, the cavity damage is much more devastating making it more likely to stop a threat with less shots.
Underwood has a 357 Sig 65g Xtreme Penetrator round that exceeds 2250+ fps out of just a 6” barrel. I don’t know of any other semiautomatic pistol caliber that has rounds capable of such velocities from a handgun. It goes straight through a 3A panel even. At those velocities normally temporary cavities tear.
One of the most attractive benefits of owning a 357 Sig is the ability to convert the firearm to 40 S&W & 9mm with nothing more than a simple barrel swap. You also normally can do a 357 Sig or 9mm conversion if you own a 40 S&W firearm as well. That means you can train on whatever platform you’re most comfortable with and whatever ammo is the most affordable, and no it isn’t always 9mm. That means that you are less hindered by ammo shortages… and when you’re done training simply swap out the barrel and ammo back to 357SIG and you’re all set. Sadly on a native 9mm firearm you don’t have any option to do a conversion.
I never understood what’s not to like about 357 SIG… well other than ammunition availability and cost being the only negatives I guess, but it is the better round.
Keep in mind that when you compare 9mm +P or +P+ to try to achieve 357 Sig performance, 357 Sig is actually cheaper than 9mm. When I searched +P+ to get as close to 357 Sig performance as possible, it was more expensive than a standard 357 Sig JHP round.
9mm +P+ is still only 1300 fps in 124 grain. That’s 50 fps slower than the lowest end 125 grain Sig round at 1350 fps and we’re comparing +P+ 9mm ammo here. Yet the bare minimum 357 Sig performance isn’t even achievable and this is usually attempted in a platform that isn’t even recommended for +P+ or even +P at times.
I say it’s best to swap to a 9mm conversion barrel when training and back to 357 Sig right before you’re all done to finish up with 357 to cut that expense down.
In most cases the recoil of any superior round can be overcome with training. I do understand that some people are recoil sensitive and are more comfortable with 9mm or other lower recoiling rounds. I understand some just prefer the thought of higher capacity. I totally understand your decisions. But let’s not bash any superior round because you prematurely decided on a specific one.
There’s nothing wrong with 9mm it’s awesome, but let’s be clear… it isn’t equal to 357 Sig and the few extra rounds it’s capable of holding in a magazine over 357 Sig definitely doesn’t make it the superior choice. In time I expect 357 Sig to make the comeback that 10mm has made in recent years… For myself these 357 Sig advantages make 9mm less desirable. How about for you?
Both the 357 Sig and 40 SW are excellent rounds and are superior to the 9mm. People shy away from them because of recoil. That’s pretty much it

Wanna piss off a full machine shop equipped gunsmith? Have him ream out the USP40 to a USP10 and open up the ejection port. The gun will be totally awesome, and so will the cost. The H&K has no problems at all with the 10mm either.

The 357 sig is about 5000 psi higher in chamber pressure.
Hot loads will beat your gun... but modern guns can handle the stress.
The 357 sig in it’s optimal loading will embarrass the 40 in terminal ballistics.

I have a P229 with both barrels as well, the only concern is the gun is registered in a specific caliber, if you swap the barrel, lets say you carry and put a threat down or you hit an innocent bystander, the prosecutor going to use it against you, if the pistol was born as a 40S&W and you taken action with a 357Sig barrel is a very easy and convincing argument about the gun was modified for be more lethal able to shoot a longer flat distances and even pass thru barricades like walls, cars doors, glass, etc, any gunsmith, police or expert can testify and confirm this against you.

@@BillMcGirr Not if you reuse your brass. I also like the Hornady Extremas or whatever they are. I got away from 180 grain and went to 165 for more velocity & muzzle energy. I am finding .40 & .357 Sig easier than I am finding 9x19 now. I bought 200 rounds of HTP, and 200 or GoldDot both 124 Grain +P which is my 9x19mm carry round of choice anyway.

James Yeager is right, because he is saying it about a Glock platform, not a Sig 229/226. Glocks are engineered for 9x19 and high pressure rounds damage them. And he is 100% correct about that. Because he prefers a modern polymer striker, his choice of caliber is 9x19.
Sig 229/226 were engineered specifically for high chamber pressure and running 40/357 sig thru them is natural and will not damage these guns.

Speer Gold dots for 357 sig and for 9mm are practically the same price. Yet 357 sig Yields 54% more Foot Pounds of energy than 9mm!! Talk about getting way more bang for your buck!!
