I want to address something that has been bothering me lately, and that is the repeat comment in some form or another, about .357 Sig ammo price and availability. Paraphrasing 100 comments into one here - ".357 Sig is not available anywhere, and it's two to three times the cost of 9mm so it's useless". My question to these people is - what are you even talking about?!
I know that a lot of physical stores do rack up the price because all they offer is generally Federal American Eagle .357 Sig, which is very pricey ammo. But to say that the cartridge is hard to find and to say it's like $60 a box in general, is very factually wrong. Going on ammoseek, there are 5+ pages of .357 Sig for purchase just like any other popular cartridge, and about a dozen of these retailers offer 50 round boxes of .357 Sig for $22 to $25. Also, defensive ammo is often about the same price if not less than 9mm+P defensive ammo.
The fact is, .357 Sig is not all that hard to find and not all that expensive. It's not a lot different (at least online) than buying a 50 round box of .357 Magnum for cost and availability, but for whatever reason a lot of people are either seriously misinformed or have an agenda to make it seem as .357 Sig ammo is about as rare and expensive as .455 Webley (5 retailers online averaging about $65-$70).

The .357 Sig is a fantastic round and it is definitely overlooked and underrated.
I still am baffled how the 357sig didnt become a top caliber. It is an amazing round.
Ive seen some reloaders getting over 1700 fps with xtp bullets and they are unreal for both hunting and self defense.
maybe because they were hard on firearms with its high working pressure (40,000 psi compared to35,000 for the 357 mag).

@@carlschumacher3257 I've heard the "hard on firearms" claim before, but I've never seen any actual evidence of it. People claimed the 10mm was hard on firearms, but that was at least partially true. Early Colt Delta Elites had a tendency to develop cracks in the frame from 10mm. Colt figured out that particular part of the frame wasn't actually necessary to the function or structural integrity of the gun and just removed it, which is pretty much how every manufacturer that makes a 1911-style 10mm has built them since.
I suspect that part of the reason .357 Sig didn't catch on was lack of widescale adoption by police (some agencies did adopt it, but most seemed to lean into the .40 S&W around that timeframe). And I wonder (with no supporting evidence) if that lack of adoption was for the same reason that the 10mm didn't catch on. If it was considered "too loud and/or too much recoil" for most officers, it wouldn't get widely adopted.
The 10mm at least developed enough of a cult following that quite a few companies offer at least something in 10mm. That doesn't seem to be the case with .357 Sig. As of now, Sig doesn't even offer a pistol chambered in their own cartridge (but they do have two options in 10mm). As far as I know the only company *currently* making pistols chambered for .357 Sig is Glock.

The round was designed to put .357 125JHP performance into a pistol. It does that one job well. My wife carried a Model 66 .357 S&W when she was a cop in the 90’s but today a great choice would be the .357 SIG. It will never be as versatile as .357 mag, but it does one thing very well.

Theres so many goods things going on here. 1 gun 2 calibers, conversion time, 5in gun, 40cal mag capacity, same magazine, easy storage...cost effective. Very nice!

Yup. I’ve converted a Sig P226 and a P229 to .357 Sig Bar-Sto barrels, one of which is extended with 3 ports. Currently waiting on a Bar-Sto Extended and Threaded and Fluted barrel converting another P229 from .40SW to 9mm.. It uses a different recoil spring and magazine but the other Sigs shoot .357 Sig and .40SW with just a barrel swap using the same mags.
I love the Sig Classic P-Series versatility.

357 Sig is a great round and use it for home defense. Underwood has some hot rounds when it comes to 357 Sig, and that is the round I use for home defense. I hope to see Underwood being used in your video. Once again, great videos.

@@nikos6220 nor for 357 sig. the currently offer the extreme penetrator and defender in 65gr, 90gr, and 115gr!!!! the 65 gr is getting 2100 fps for 637ftlbs of energy, and the 90gr is getting 1700 fps for 578ftlbs!!! the 115gr loses too much speed due to copper being less denseand takingup case capacity, but is still getting 1450fps for 537ftlbs of energy!!!

I love my 357sig. Bought mine in 2017 to use for work (armed security), and it was the most impressive gun on the range. Accurate, and during night qualifications, everyone stopped shooting to watch the massive muzzle flash from my gun. Lol. It was such an unusual caliber for my company, they kept putting .357magnum on the state paperwork, and I had to make them change it... TWICE.
Great round. I use for black bear and deer hunting in a Just Right Carbine. One shot kills w the Hornady load. Have it in Glock 31 also w a red dot.

Same. I used to be able to grab FMJ at the range and JHP at the store, now it’s rare to see locally and I end up buying a few boxes at a time online when the price per round decreases with quantity to offset the shipping cost.

Another thing to note about the 68 grain extreme defender is 2200+FPS you get into rifle like damage and more tissue destruction

The fact of the matter is that .357 Sig ammunition is more expensive and less available than 9mm ammo.
Yes, I can go online and find some .357 Sig ammo. But I can have my pick of the litter for 9mm ammo while I'm at my local farm & ranch store picking up dog food.

WAY back in the day when my dept was going to issued only guns, caliber was being debated. There was a small but very vocal push wanting .357 SIG pistols (we were getting SIGs). My argument was that we already used +P+ 9mm ammo so we weren't gaining anything ... BOY was _I_ WRONG! Wow! I like to think I didn't make a lot of bad calls but that one was a big ol' miss.
Very interesting video and I definitely learned something.
I would say, well you could use 9mm+P+, and in fact that's a more sound decision for a wide number of people as long term use of .357 Sig really wears on guns. I would rather the department be shooting FMJ 9mm in larger quantities then shooting occasionally and carrying +P+. But as a personal choice for a regular guy, the .357 Sig really does take it up a notch. I was shooting 124 gr the other day around 1,550 FPS.

I rely on a 357sig as a duty weapon and off duty weapon. I use Underwood bonded 125 gr JHP. ( it’s the Speer Gold Dot bullet )
I also have a woods round from Atomic Ammo, a 147gr JHP at an unbelievable 1300fps. (There is a video on CZcams from Atomic on this round and it’s clocked by a laser chronograph.
There are also videos on CZcams of 357sig velocities from a carbine. Usually around 1900to over 2000fps.
I’m really looking forward to future 357sig videos.
Very cool. I haven't tried Atomic ammo yet, but I have some of their inverted .38 wadcutters and their 9mm jhp ammo to test. I'll have to see how I feel about their ammo. I have some Underwood 147 gr .357 Sig I'm testing soon, says 1250 fps on the box.
I have a ton of Underwood 125 bonded chrono it last weekend hit 1550 out of my 5 inch alpha wolf threaded barrel in my g22 and the xtreme defender 68 grain hit a mind blowing 2282 FPS almost 800 ftlbs of energy

Is that a department issue or do they let you carry your personal gun on duty? I don't know that I've ever known a law enforcement agency to issue 357 Sig.
@@bjs301 The NC Highway Patrol did. They recently switched to 9mm. I think they issued Sig P226’s in 357 Sig.
I have a 357sig P320 loaded with nosler 115gr underwood, advertised velocity 1600FPS! Recoil is similar to a quality .40 JHP. Definitely hits harder on game

Just a little history here: The .357 SIG is based on a necked-down 10mm Auto case and was introduced in 1994. The goal of the .357 SIG project was to offer a level of performance equal to the highly effective 125 grain .357 Magnum load. Measurements of standard factory .357 SIG cartridges loaded with 125 grain bullets showed approximate muzzle velocities of 1450 fps out of a 4 inches barrel, which is essentially identical to the .357 Magnum with the same bullet weight and barrel length. Those measurements were performed using a Thompson Center Encore 1842 break-action, single-shot pistol preventing differing barrel length definitions between semi-automatic pistols and revolvers giving revolvers a potential muzzle velocity advantage.
Bullet weights ranging from 50 to 150 grains have/or are currently being offered. Loads are available with energies from 488 ft lbs to 636 ft. lbs of force and penetration depths from 9 inches to over 16.5 inches are available for various applications. Underwood offers a standard pressure 65 gr .357 SIG Xtreme Defender round with a muzzle velocity of 2100 fps, with a muzzle energy of 636 ft. lbs and a penetration depth of 17.5 inches. Liberty Ammunition offers Civil Defense a 50 grain, 2300 fps, with 587 ft lbs of muzzle energy. The 125 grain is by far the most popular loading offered. The Buffalo Bore 125 grain has the same specs at 1450 fps and 567 ft. lbs as the original concept round but at the time of this post will set your wallet back $2.90 cents a round. Ironically the .357 Magnum and the 10MM at heavier loading's out perform the .357 SIG and at a better price point per round. So would you call this experiment a success or a failure?
Have several .357sigs and .40's. More flash and noise from the .357sig, but such a flat shooting cartridge with power and feeds flawlessly due to bottleneck design. My favorite cartridge.
I was pretty pleased to see you testing the 357 Sig. That round has always intrigued me. I was able to shoot a p226 in the 357 Sig and it was very fun. I'm interested to see what it can do defensively. I know the Texas hwy patrol for the most part really like the round and there was a security guard at a Texas church that had very good results with the round as well. It is a very flat shooting round which would lend it to being a good defensive round as well. Looking forward to future tests and also hope you do some more 45 super tests if more ammo ever comes available again.

I've read through the comments, so I know you already have more .357 Sig videos in the works. I'm hoping .357 Sig Federal HSTs are on the docket at some point in the near future.
Yes I do plan to test them. I know that Federal has also said they are releasing a .357 Magnum is HST, so I don't know how long it will be before that happens as I like comparison videos.

Sig 229 in 357 Sig is my home defense pistol, as well as the main pistol I edc. Absolutely love it with underwood ammo.

Did coversion to 357 sig from 40 s&w Shield. When I carry autoloader, that's the 1. Hand load to match my 357 mag loads. Love it!
There are some hot rounds out there for the 357 sig. Underwood is the only one that does quite a few different loadings that I have found. they have a 68 grain and a 90 grain that put up some really impressive numbers. I love my glock 32 and it is a lot easier to shoot fast and accurately than most think.

I can’t believe I missed this video when it came out. Love me my .357Sig (Glock 32). I’m glad you stated the fact that .357Sig comes from a necked down (and cut) .10mm. I’ve gotten into an argument or three with ignoramuses who insist that the cartridge comes from a necked down .40, which is completely false.
I watched a ton of ballistic gel videos and some fail the 12” to 18” FBI test. But everything in 357 SIG passes with flying colors. Even the cheeper self defense loads in 357 SIG preform excellent!!!!

You can convert any 40 S&W to a .357 sig. You just need a barrel change.

I'm a big fan of the 10mm family. The 10mm, 40 s&w, 9x25 Dillon, and the 357 Sig.
I've enjoy playing with these cartridges and performance covers from watered down 40s&w fun practice loads to full tilt 100yd laser beam 9x25 Dillon.
All 4 can be excellent critter gitters including the 2 legged variety. Great video and info.

Many say (as you noted) that the 357 sig because is a necked down 10 mm to .357 , will feed very easily into a barrel meant for .40 caliber cartridge. Thus very reliable feed. Looking for a 40 S&W Beretta that I can convert.
That " enhanced feed" that people seem to think the 357sig offers really doesn't exist, especially in guns that feed from angled mags. The more angle, the more likely you will have problems, glocks are very problematic with the sig round. Some don't have many problems but, if you have much experience with glock 32's & 33's, you know what I'm talking about. The problem lies in the shape of the cartridge and the way the slide just contacts the top of the rim while pushing it out of the mag. The larger diameter of the rear section of the cartridge is very short, that, coupled with how the slide contacts the cartridge rim, allows the nose of the cartridge to be forced down into the front of the magazine as the round is forced over the neck radius of the round beneath it. A very stiff mag spring can help but the design of that platform is just a malfunction waiting to happen
.357 SIG is .40 necked down to a 9mm bullet, 9x25 Dillon is 10mm necked down to a 9mm bullet.

Really good demonstration. Compare & contrasting these is really good to do. I have a 357 Sig conversion barrel for my M&P40 full size and a 5" 9mm conversion barrel for both full size and M&P40c. I like the 357 Sig. But I have just stayed with my 40.

357 sig is mean dude, excellent law enforcement cartridge, as close to rifle like penetration on things like cars and Barriers you can get with a duty gun

That’s not true, velocity is almost entirely responsible for a bullets ability to penetrate barriers, a .45 is to big and way to slow, a 45 may expand more through a specific barrier but a 357 sig will go through things a 45 could never even think about going through

Good friend of mine is a K9 Deputy .. he was in Officer Involved Shooting.. Glock 31 with 125 Grain HST .. loss of life is always tragic in any situation…but he did place one road center mass and the threat was stopped.. he said it was pretty much instantaneous the legs buckled and down he went .. .. my friend lived to fight another day .. I EDC Glock 32 with 124 grain underwood nosler bullets .. my favorite cartridge next to .40
Very much like the reports of .357 Magnum. I believe the reports. I don't know all the science behind it, but there's something about the combination of 125 gr at about 1,400 FPS that just about triples the effect of a 124 gr 9mm+P at 1,250 FPS. You wouldn't think that little more would matter, but time and time again it does. Almost like it's right at some threshold of everything, pain, fragmentation, thump...I don't know what it is, but it seems to be right there with .357 Sig and Mag.

I'm glad you did this video! I have that same M&P 40, been considering getting a .357 Sig barrel for it. But the main thing I liked was how powerful the .40 ammo was that you used. I've been using plain-jane Winchester 180gr FMJ for bear defense, and those Federal 155s actually deliver more energy. Even more energy than Underwood's Extreme Penetrator for the .40 - I see an ammo swap in the near future!

In 1998 I bought my first 357sig pistol and loved it, I still have it in my safe is a Sig SP2340. I have been hunting down a S&W M&P in 357sig but haven't been able to find one.
Now that barrel would be a great option for my 1st generation M&P Performance Center 40L I will look into it. I want that barrel now.
Look at kkm precision. I have the 40 to 9mm conversion barrel and I'm very happy with it.
My first (and currently only) .357 Sig pistol was also a Sig Pro SP2340. I got mine in the early 2000s. I don't shoot it much because ammo is hard to find. I handload, but sometimes the brass my gun ejects is hard to find, too.
I have really come to like the S&W M&P 2.0 pistols. For the money, they feel better in the hand than most other guns and I have had no malfunctions with any of my 9's or 40's

I have had a real fascination with the Tokarev for quite some time so I am really starting to develop an interest in the .357 Sig.
Of course the Remington mag definitely has the advantage with heavy bullets.
Read a lot of the comments, have to agree with most of them 357 Sig is a great round. One fella said other than hunting. I have to agree 357 Magnum in a revolver is hard to beat. But as far as defensive carry, it's hard to be long live 357 Sig
I think hunting with .357 Sig would be fine. Plenty of people successfully and ethically hunt deer and similar sized game using 125 grain JHPs pushed around 1400-1450 FPS out of a .357 Magnum. No reason you couldn't do the same with the .357 Sig.
I don't know about that for sure, I don't know if you could get a load that would be accurate and chronograph at 1,500 for the second., out of the Sig 357. And to tell you the truth 125 grain bullet out of a pistol is probably on the light side. If not your shots are very limited to distance about 75 yards and in ethically speaking. I want to tell you a little quick story, I shoot a 45-70 and my velocity is way higher than that. And the chunk of lead I throw out there is double and then some. I reload from many calibers I truly understand ballistics. Kinetic energy. And knock down power. Anyone who would use a 357 Sig I would hope that their skill is very refined, and they are an ethical Hunter. I still like the Sig 357

I made the switch on my Beretta 96a1 to 357 Sig with an EFK FireDragon ext and ported 5.3-inch barrel.
Love the 357 sig. Its kinda like that relative that nobody wants to invite to the party. "Waaaa its too expensive" get a press and roll your own.
I'd never reload it. Went that route with .45 ACP lol. After bending down and bending down to only find 80% of my brass, I just decided to stick with reloading revolver cartridges.

My friend had a 229 Legion and I shot it before. It was like 6 years ago so I don't remember fully, but I do remember that his was in .40 and it recoiled like a 9mm.
Buy all the 357 sig you can now from Underwood, Wilson Combat bought them out and they are going to skimp on quality for sure.If you want a 125 for defence get the Ranger Bonded they will chrono about 1400 through a 226 or 31 and is hands down the best bullet for defence, 65 grain Underwood with ED bullet is a powerhouse for barriers.

In Puerto Rico a female salon owner was robbed leaving her business. She was one of few people with a ccw in Puerto Rico. She shot the robber with a Glock chambered in .357 sig. When she went to the hospital to be checked out, she asked what happened to the man screaming in the ER she was told you shot him in the groin.

Since I haven't found an M&P 357sig, I did the next best thing and ordered the KKM 357sig barrel for my M&P Performance Center CORE 40L and 1k rounds to do some plinking with my Sig and the M&P.
I carry a glock 31 357 sig 4.5 inch barrel and with underwood ammo bonded 125 grain gold dot bullet the box said fps is 1475 but through my chronogragh I am getting 1550 fps adv.

Appreciate the info. Missed the denim cover. Surprised at the penetration, even with the target ammo. Some hard cast bullets definitely puts it as a dangerous animal round.
Denim is to give a real word clog to a hollow point to see if the hollow point overcomes this and still expands. No use for it with this test.
I have the same .357 barrel for my M&P. Underwood .357 sig 65 gr defender will clock 2150-2200 fps from a 5 inch barrel.
Underwood has it in stock however it’s 68 grain now and I chrono it last weekend 2282 from my 5 inch alpha wolf threaded barrel in my g22 I’m sitting on 600 rounds of it

The .357 Sig in an M&P or Glock is one of those things, where a new gun is nothing more than a different barrel from the factory. I see .357 Sig and .40 in one gun with a conversion barrel the same as .38 Special in a .357 Mag revolver. "Different" caliber, but at the same time it's the "same".
@@GunSam I understand your position, I had to collect all the Gen 3s and the Gen 5 26 and the 43 and 43X. For me it's a treasure hunt. The .357 sigs in the 32 and 33 are snappy little bastards, 31 is just like the .40 cal. The price of that ammo keeps them in the safe though.

Now just get the 9x25mm dillon barrel for the 10mm and the 40 super for the 45 and we can finally start selling some serious gel testing of the top end niche magnum calibres because in 9x25mm dillon and 40 super there are hardly anything and especially 9x25 there is basically nothing which is bizarre as its basically 357sig magnum or around highest 357 magnum to 357 maximum in an auto with hot ammunition,
But its great were finally getting 357sig and here's hoping for the other awesome conversion barrels
There was a wildcat cartridge back in the early to mid 80's call a 38/45 auto. A .357 dia bullet with a necked down .45 Auto casing. The only problem was it was based on the 1911 so single stack limitation of rounds. I have a Glock 33 and it is a fun hand cannon. The muzzle flash can be distracting but not too bad. As to your rifle statement, TNW Aero has a 16 in carbine that slings Fort Scott .357 Sig to almost intermediate rifle cartridge speeds (2300+). Sounds like the old 38/45 Clerke or 38 Hardhead. But that was back in 1963 not the 1980s
@@Matteo_ I read about it in a Guns and Ammo Magazine in or around 83". Lots of time and a head full of gray hair has dimmed a lot of the details. I do remember that the author used a 30.06 case, cut it to length and then sized it to fit the .357 bullet. The only thing I remember asking myself was why? 38 Super Auto could be loaded to meet the specs with a lot less work and at the time way more available ammo. Was an interesting concept since I had on occasion fired some Tokarevs while overseas in the military. Cheers...
@@lutherpayne9957 Yes, the 30-06 case was used, I believe this was to mitigate the higher pressure in any unsupported chambers. If one where to choose to push the pressures higher than normal. People will also use 308/260 and the 243 cases. Similar can be done with the 400 CorBon. You can run it under the standard 45 acp pressures. Or ramp it up to 35,000 where the 40 is for some very near 10mm level performance.
As for the why? It takes little to convert a 45 acp 1911 over to this if one only has the 45. And still retains the ability to swap back to 45 with little effort. Where as a 38 is built different to accommodate that longer thinner round. And it's only a 38 ACP/ 38 Super. There's the fact that 38/45 Clerke doesn't have a semi-rim to the case. So you don't have to worry about rim lock. Another thing to keep in mind the 45 acp case has a little bit more case capacity than the 357.
I've shot the tokarev. Fun gun. Never shot it in the military though. Maybe cause I was a combat engineer. So I did more demo shoots, mine clearing operation and breaches. Personally I prefer the 357 SIG to the x25. I also have a G33. But I favor my Steyr S40 with a conversion barrel a bit more.

A .357 sig chambered pistol is a multicaliber weapon. In a pinch you can shoot 9mm. Luger in it. Once we tried on an old range Glock 32 - cycled no issues, magazine worked and it was accurate at 10 meters at least. Only thing I noticed is the 9mm casing is bulged, but don't try this at home folks we are poors from the Balkans and .357 Sig is expensive as hell here.
I've wanted to get a 357 SIG barrel for my Glock 27 .I was concerned about reliability and power.but now maybe I'll be more motivated.i honestly didn't think it would be as powerful as a 357 mag .I'm happy I was wrong..ty..
It would be interesting to see a round-nose FMJ for .357 Sig and .40 S&W, to see if it would cause more turbulation or perhaps tumbling. Flat-nosed FMJs just zip through.
A round nose FMJ will be too long to fit in a magazine without issues for both.

I tried handloading some standard 124 grain round nose FMJ in my .357 Sig when I first got it. To get the overall length right so they would fit in the magazine, I had to have them seated so deep in the case that the bullet curved away from the case mouth. That was the only ammunition that has ever given me any feeding difficulties in my Sig Pro. Handloads with truncated cone shaped projectiles can be seated to the proper depth and have always worked perfectly.
@@Matteo_ I always assumed that's why the .40 was flat nose. To be 9mm length and 180 gr, something's got to be shifted, like tucking my belly under my belt.
@@GunSam Pretty much. Maximum over all length for the 40 is listed as 1.135". However, I have successfully loaded them to 1.140 without feeding issues. The 357 SIG OTOH can be loaded a bit longer than that. Although not as long as the 9mm's 1.169"

It came out in the 90s for race guns in 38 Super that were having rim jam problems.
Ballistics is the same as the 357 Sig but with a little less case capacity, chamber pressure: 55000 psi, with an internal belt.

There are some companies making a 24lbs guide rod with spring, put it on (I have a Glock 31) and the felt recoil will be reduced a lot, becoming way more manageable.
