Is it really possible to capture that “…And Justice For All” guitar sound?

- Excuse my floppy playing during some parts I didn’t intent to make a proper cover of any song or anything I was just jamming parts that came to my mind as I go. It was all Axe Fx 3 straight to IPhone. Thanks for watching !

Hey bro, what app should I download first to use the presets ? Can’t seem to find anything on AppStore
Came here from Ultimate Guitar to see if you shared it! Thanks!
i tried to import it but its completely empty
Your bassist’s tone is on point too.
I see what you did there 😂
That was cold, bruh.
super heavy bass tone
🤣🤣🤣
Should of put “FEAT. Jason Newsted” in the title
the distortion is close but the cleans are GOD DAMN SPOT ON
Get some good speakers lmao, distortion sounds spot on as well
@@gabfish16no not at all
The chug is absolutely on point. Low gain really is the key
Idk how low is low, you mean gain on 6?
My gain is on 4. *shrugs*
Edit: with a boost
@@megamuerte6934 It pretty much depends on you and your pickups, but for guitar amps, playing on 6-7 gain and then multitracking always helped me improve my tones
This isnt a chug, this sounds like when your guitar cable is fried. Shrill as shit
@@alwaysabiggafish3305 which monitors are you listening trough ?
3:18 man, that was so freaking smooth
I've sometimes heard people complain about the way AJFA sounds, but to my ears, the doomy scooped tones of the rhythm guitar tracks have killer tones to them. Hetfield's choices of guitar sounds from MOP, AJFA, and the Black Album are all uniquely different yet all badass. Then again, Hetfield's aggressive and precise string attack really gives ultimate definition to let those notes speak. A hundred years from now people will still be talking about how good this shit sounds.
It's the bass on Justice that's the issue. Awful mix. Here's one guy's attempt to fix, not bad at all I wish it sounded like this when released czcams.com/video/6kqTcLwUYj8/video.html
@@chrislia9100 Well we all know about the bass issue. Lots of people have done a good job adding a bass track into it. Personally, I don't mind the way the original album sounds. Call me nostalgic, but as a young man, that album was still inspiring to me when it came out. Adding bass obviously doesn't take away, but it doesn't make it more great because I already thought it was great. Didn't stop fans from buying albums or showing up at concerts.
@@Fister_of_Muppets it still sounds great but it's still missing an instrument that was there until it wasn't. Of course i'll still enjoy it, but if i have to choose what to listen to, i always take the versions with the bass recovered. I don't complain about how the other instruments sounds though, they suond great, the bass issue is unrelated
@@Fister_of_Muppets no offense intended, your comment made no mention of the bass issue hence my bringing it up. Imo mixing a record and dropping out an entire instrument was weird and I personally always felt it was lacking. That said it stilll was and is a killer record and yeah it definitely didn't hurt sales or appeal and of course it'll always have a place for me. It's just an anomaly of sorts, you have the premier metal band opting for a constrained outcome on a recording, only to deliberately seek out a fuller sound on the followup record based on hearing another band's record the year after. Just a weird outcome, I would love to have been in the room when the decisions were being made just to know the rationalization
@@chrislia9100 Oh I agree, it is one of those mysteries that we've heard pieces of over the years. The sound engineer claimed that Lars wanted the bass lowered to "barely audible," then dropped 8dB after that. James later said that Jason was doubling up on practically every note that James was playing, and it muddied up the mix. Jason later corroborated this... which makes me wonder if this is true. Lars has always had a good ear for arrangements (ironically though not a good ear for snare on St Anger). James has always been very critical on his guitar sound, from the percussive style of his attack on the strings, to tone and the way his guitars "cut" through the mix. So in the end I feel like they didn't feel like Jason's playing on AJFA "stood apart" from James's rythyms, like the way that Cliff did his own thing, and since he was the new guy, they just axed it and moved on. I'm sure the way it all went down in the studio was more harsh, but we may never really know the nuance or lack of that went into it.
Incredible as always. The Justice clean tone and Rhythm tones are to die for
Justice was the best and perfect metal album.
I’m sure no one would argue with the clean songs but I’ve heard a lot of guitarist that hate the rhythm tones on Justice. Not me I love it something about that dry crunchy tone.
I wonder if they were trying to achieve something similar to Puppets but without Cliffs bass , that master of puppets tone isn’t phenomenal it gets muddy if you drop the bass tracks off it . Maybe James wanted to achieve clarity and I think it’s the first album with EMGS on it so that people contributed. I’ve always loved And Justice for All especially as a metal rhythm player, I even like the bass drum sitting on top of the mix. I’ve always wondered what album they would’ve made next had Cliff not been killed. He had the most musical theory knowledge and could transpose harmonies for James and Kirk quicker than they can find out. I think Metallica wanted to really display their technical prowess on AJFA, but I think Cliff could’ve reeled them in a little bit and maybe streamline some of the arrangements. I’ve always just imagined that those songs wound up so long on Justice because they probably hadn’t grieved nor talked about the loss of Cliff and getting in the room and thrashing was their therapy. It’s a dark album too probably Metallica’s darkest, James peak as a lyricist possibly.
But to die is to live so to live is to die…
@@Briwinmkato live is to die for.
You’re the only person I’ve seen come within a razors WIDTH of Metallica’s tone, awesome job bro🔥
Check out state of Mercurys videos 🤘
@@antonflystrup932 been watching him for awhile too, he comes really close as well
Dmometalguitar comes close also.
RubberDuck Tech's cover of And Justice For All is the closest I've ever seen
Check out rubber duck tech, he gets REALLY close with real amps
That isn't a guitar any more, it's a monster
one thing that is lost on many guitarists, is that more gain is not better, or heavier. especially in a mix with multiple layered guitars, a talented player using lower gain but proper palm muting technique will always yield that tone we all dream about. well done sir, that ESP is beautiful.
Lower gain for riffs and Higher gain for leads! Low gain on leads sounds stale af but high gain on riffs sound messy!
The Justice album rhythm tracks were recorded with gains between 8.5 and 10 (9 mostly) with the lead drive between 5.5 and 7.
I don’t understand this recent trend of people saying that “low gain” is how it’s done.
It might be just the ticket for certain genres, but for recreating MOP or AJFA tones, you need all the gain, a couple EQ to mimic the Aphex in the loop and then an Eq for the Mesa 5 band.
If you listen to the master guitar stems, there is a low mid bark that is achieved, that all recreations (digital ones) can’t recreate for whatever reason.
It’s normally replaced with too much higher frequency stuff to try to compensate and most come out a little treble heavy. The stem tone has way more low end than people assume from just hearing the album.
For all the hate AJFA tone gets (too scooped) vs the love for MOP tones, I still think Justice was a continuation and improvement of James tone.
@@Justice_Hammer i don't get it either. everybody with half an ear can hear there's lots of gain and compression involved to get this tone. personally, for old school metal, i prefer to use around 8 for gain, depending on the amp and overdrive of course. but i rather have too much gain then too less
@@Justice_Hammer lower gain sounds so much better though
@@hazardeur it’s the EQ they are talking about
The tone on One is almost spot on!
It's the closest tone I've ever heard for AJFA🤘🏼
To say that this sound is wonderful is an understatement, this is amazing!
Its crazy how creative James was back then, I dont get why he cant get to that level of inspiration anymore
Being young and hungry really helps.
Love this video, amazing job as always Nico.
whouaaa, what a sound !! excatly like justice !! amazing
Very much appreciate you finally sharing your tones man! Que chido nick!

Dude that sounds spot on, both the clean and distorted tone. Great job!
Superb playing and really accurate tone I would say. Thanks for going through the Fractal settings. Also, beautiful ESP.

That intro to One spot on, good job with the tone
Clean tone is literally 💯. Well done.
Truely amazing sound you created. The closest to AJFA ive heard so far. Plus at 7:17 i turned around to notice my cat was not behind me ;D
Close my eyes and I'm hearing the guitar track from the album. Totally nailed the sound. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when you played the intro to ONE. 👌

Fuckin amazing, great job nailing down the exact Justice guitar sound.
That is absolutely on point - you could literally sub out the album parts
That clean intro !!! 😊😊😊😊😊
some people hate this albums tone but the crunchy distortion is truly unique, no other album or even band has utilized such a tone so well
You nailed the tone and I’m drooling over the ESP, Gibson can eat their heart out.
Sounds great, you play well!!!
@3:44 wow!! That chug is literally spot on man
Incredible, it’s sound exactly like on the album! Sick. Well done mate. I must try to replicate it in my Headrush, if it manages.. Thank you and cheers from Sweden 🤘🏼🤘🏼

the clean tone sounds just like its crazy
Sounds good work on right hand 🤙
That's bloody good. Close as. Interestingly, listening, and I love this album and the guitar tone, I found myself thinking I'd never settle on that tone in isolation. But it works and is iconic. Eh.
Damn, this is about as spot on as I think just about anyone is gonna get
Very raw!!
I'm probably one of the only people that loves the Justice tone. 🤘🤘
Me too
@@s1540
Good man. 🤘🤘
Distorted tone on AJFA is fire 🔥🔥
@Obi Wan Shinobi
To each their own, my dude. I'm guessing you like low gain, dimed out mids and low highs for that modern, colorless, boxy, warm, djenty tone? That tone that every cookie cutter, modern metal band uses so they sound exactly the same to where you can't even tell them apart? It's completely fine to hate old school metal tones, but at least when you heard that tone you knew exactly who it was, without even seeing who's playing. Hell, I don't like GnR or Slashes playing, but I could tell it was him when he played.
Dang. That's pretty damn good.
That chug is NASTYYYYYY . Good job man
Sickening!!
Outstanding.
The tone is perfect
Oh my God you nailed it.
my head literally hurts xd But it sounds great man, good job!
I loaded this up in my Axe FX III and wow. This is truly amazing. It sounds very very good. Thank you so much for this. This nails the justice tone so well. This has got to be one of the best tones in Axe change. For real. Do you happen to have one for the Master of Puppets album?
Awesome man
Quite impressive!
Great job!! I have the same shirt too!
Perfect 👌
Sounds KILLER!! Love that ESP!! I tried adding a Diezel as a second Amp on the dirty tone... Holy Shit!! Think I'm on to something !
Nailed the Injustice tone! 🤘🎸👌
AMAZING
Wow, yeah dude, I think you actually nailed it. It cuts just like it. Like the way it hurts my ears is exactly the same. But a good hurt, like piercing almost

very solid picking hand man.
cool and cool guitar to. I remember when that album was release. they filmed their 1st video (one) ever & it they took off. i believe they made 3 version's of it. that 1 video made them.
Love it ✌️😁
Really good 👍
Spot on
I'm always blown away by these kind of videos. I think you came very close. Fantastic sound! Specially clean but the distorted sound also sounds a lot like Justice. Now you have to take into account that it's also the multi layering of guitars that makes the sound on a record - it's not just gear like guitar, playing, pickups, mics, amps, cabs, pedals etc.. And your playing is very good btw.
Your an Axe fx master!
Great vid
Nailed it 😎
Woahhhhhh broooo hell yea!!!
You RULE!!!!!!! ❤
Love the 2022 RAMMSTEIN shirt!!!!
I have that exact same shirt! Saw them in Chicago Sept 3rd
