It’s always fun to hear people’s takes on “the best…” in music. One song that I never see on these lists and don’t understand is Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. Super unique sound and identifiable immediately
Mark Knopfler might be the most underrated human being on the planet. Not only Sultans are missing from any lists, and it's his most famous song, but the guy also still consistently writes astonishingly good songs nobody cares about. It's a shame.
To be fair, sultans of swing doesn’t really even have a riff, which is what makes it great.
They struggle to play it smoothly (Thats a challenge). Plus that song has like 160 individual riffs.

In my opinion, a list like this isn't complete without Money for nothing by Dire Straits on it.

I heard you say in another video that your consider the beggining of Layla more as a lick, so I kinda expected not to be here. And there could be a lot of other Zeppelin riffs.

More than a feeling by Boston is one of my favs.
I was hoping for Moth into Flame by Metallica. Unpopular opinion, but I think it was an underrated riff/song. Also Paranoid and Master of puppets.

I have the same stare when playing SCOM, but as an intimidation tactic so that listeners don't notice how noisy/messy I play it 🙈

At 1:43, I didn't knew the Dave Matthews Band made that song called "Satellite" and I didn't knew that title yet when I listened to it in my childhood, even after it was released in 1994 (2 years before I was born). I'm glad you gave me my childhood back with that song. Thank you, Tyler:)

A few of my favorite riffs are “who did you think I was” by John Mayer, “couldn’t stand the weather” by SRV or “wait until tomorrow” by Jimi Hendrix
Those would definitely be in my top ten
Probably doesn't count as just a riff, but the entire intro to Little Wing. One of the most beautiful 30 seconds of music in my opinion. SRV's version is also up there, but the original by Jimi is an absolute classic.
Good list! Biggest things I'd personally change is swapping Spoonman for Outshined, and also including something by Opeth
Its always a good sight when I see someone else acknowledge Opeth. One of my top 5 bands. Seen them 4 times live and loved every minute of every show.

As massive of a Tool fan as I am, Schism is definitely driven by Chancellors bass. Also, feel like Bush - Machinehead deserved to be on that list more than some others.

Problem with these riff things is you cant number the amount of great riffs. Its endless and you will always miss tons of them.

Agreed. I've listed to Friday Night in San Francisco by The Guitar Trio thousands of times since a friend introduced me to it in college. Blows my mind every listen. It's like a secret language they're speaking through music and emotion.

Love that you have Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home on this list. One of my favorite songs and that riff is a major reason.
Tyler - giving credit to Coheed automatically makes your list better than all the other lists regurgitating the same songs year after year. Coheed's catalog is full of amazing riffs and "Welcome Home" is definitely a gateway to them, so thank you for including it.

Awesome Video! I have been playing for about 9 months, but i recently had to start focusing on school again. I love guitar and it is honestly one of the greatest energies to experience running through your finger tips. I've just been depressed lately, because i'll probably have to sell my telecaster to pay for school... it's okay though i can always get another guitar :)
For a moment there I thought I was at Guitar Center on a Friday night but great respect for Mediterranean Sunset. Elegant Gypsy from Dimeola and friends is one of my faves. Nice playing!

Glad to see at least one Radiohead riff on here. That must have been a hard choice! I'm sure these days they're probably better known (and arguably more popular) for their more "experimental" and less guitar driven stuff. But OK Computer and The Bends are full of amazing riffs! Planet Telex and Subterannian Homesick Alien are two of my personal faves.

Cool list. For some of these bands, I would replace the songs you picked with:
1. Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin
2. All Nightmare Long by Metallica
3. I'm Broken by Pantera
4. Paradise City by Guns n' Roses
And I would also add Layla by Eric Clapton which is the riff under the part that everyone knows which you said is more of a lick than a riff.

Gel is probably my favourite riff with the way it kicks in suddenly after the intro/chorus, along with it’s very tasteful solo. And their new stuff has some excellent riffs too

The most impressive part for me was being able to navigate all those tones from one board/rig in sequence without a fancy loop switcher or midi control.

My all-time favorite riff is Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter, nobody ever has it on their lists lol. That said, this is a great list. Also your tone on Sunshine of Your Love is insanely close to the original, very cool.
muses matthew bellamy has written so many great riff like on new born - plug in baby - stockholm syndrome - knights of cydonia - unnatural selection - supremacy - psycho - the handler - and so on
also robert fripp from king crimson has written some crasy unplayable incredible riffs

I always liked flying remastered by ufo. The bends on that song are so unique and hard to copy and joe satriani with the emotion behind his songs. Really like the selection you put together on this, had Spotify open the whole time.
i think the prechorus riff in tomorrow by silverchair (the part where he goes 'very hard to drink') and the clean guitar solo bit before the first chorus are some of my favourite guitar riffage ever.
Blue Oyster Cult: "Don't Fear the Reaper". One of the coolest and most rewarding riffs to lean early and one of the most iconic and eerie guitar solos ever.
Also, Iggy Pop and the Stooges : "Search and Destroy".

Holy Diver. Your Steve Via is Great. You hit that one note Perfect. On the Lower end it was there but not absolute. You are a great guitarist and versatile in every respect. Peace. You did this with one guitar and executed the pedal board like a wizard. Awesome.
Great list Taylor, great guitar tone and great playing. 👍 I allways feel happy how diversified a Special is. Got my about a year ago now. Put it down only for the SG from time to time. Had to convince my bandmates first 😁 but the killer tone speaks for it self. Good choise to take the Special for this video 🤘

Love that one of my favorite under-appreciated 90s bands, Collective Soul was included here. Also, The Darkness are CRIMINALLY underrated. They are truly a modern day badass two guitar rock band that absolutely shreds.
Agreed!!! Always love hearing a little Collective Soul, especially something other than just Shine or December. I love those songs but it’s all you ever hear when they have so many other great songs.

GVF is an example of a good, young rock band. There's such a scarcity of new rock bands these days, that's why it's so important to make bands like Dirty Honey, Mammoth WVH, and Forrester popular. I would even go as far as to say that the riff at the interlude of "Down And Out Of State" by Forrester belongs on this list.
@@Redoubt1989 down and out of state is really easy to play. Plus, Forrester is a better band when it comes to drums than guitar. The drum solo is in down and out of state makes my top 10 drum solos list, but not guitar.

Lack of representation of 80s heavy metal bands is frankly disappointing. There's no way I wouldn't have: Judas Priest (Electric Eye), Iron Maiden (2 Minutes to Midnight), Megadeth (Symphony of Destruction), Slayer (Raining Blood), Def Leppard (Pour Some Sugar on Me), Motley Crue (Kickstart My Heart), Motorhead (Ace of Spades) and many more.
