    Mario is the first Smash Bros. character, yet his moveset design and references have stayed almost the same for decades! Today, we return to Know Your Moves to look at Super Mario's not so super moveset to uncover why his lackluster design is actually brilliant.

    I know this was out of left field, but yes Know Your Moves is back and I'm excited to be working on it again. I'll be uploading an update video in the coming day just to sort of explain why I decided now and what the rest of the channel will look like going forward . I was going to do an Alax Direct but figured you'd rather see the video sooner. So yeah, look forward to that!

    So I know a common point is "Mario is the Ryu of Smash Bros". He's got the uppercut, the fireball, the spinny movement move - same three specials every shoto's supposed to have. But what I really love about Mario is how he's a Ryu designed specifically around Smash Bros. His fireball travels around the same speed as the hadoken rather than as fast as his games, but it still obeys gravity, thus giving it a better interaction with platforms. His Super Jump Punch is made primarily to recover, but still works as that out of guard/wake up option that a shoryu would. The way that Mario moves around platforms and extends his combo game with them - vertically, specifically - fits him. He's the platforming guy. You gonna mess with him on platforms? What are you, nuts? As much as Mario is an introduction to Smash, I also find him an adaptation of both fighting games into Smash and Mario platforming into Smash. And that's a LOT to juggle, super elegantly, with just 64 as a base! As simple as it is, I feel like Mario is one of the most intelligently designed characters in how he interacts with the game of Smash Bros.
    But you right fludd is still butts.

    • @PFEANYCS
      @PFEANYCS Před 2 lety +22

      Wouldn’t it be cool if you could change the way fludd behaves? Maybe with like Mario’s taunts or something? Like up taunt gives you rocket nozzle to shoot you upwards at a very high distance if fully charged, down taunt gives you hover nozzle as a way to get back on the stage and maybe gimp opponents, and side taunt gives you that dash nozzle that lets you basically do banjo-kazooie side special when fully charged. And then shield + b could give you the regular nozzle again. I think that’d make fludd a super cool part of Mario’s kit.

    Personally, I see Mario as the Ryu of smash bros. He's meant to be the character who teaches a new player how smash works at a basic level. And Dr. Mario is meant to be the evil Ryu and/or Akuma of the game, as in he hits harder, has some different properties to his moves, some different moves when it comes to 3ds onward, but is a glass cannon when it comes to health, since he falls faster because of his weight clas and has a harder time getting back to the stage than both Mario and Luigi after getting knocked off stage in the many ways smash works when it comes to health. Also, Luigi is Ken, who has some similar moves, is faster, has a handful of original moves and more explosive power in said moves when used properly, but is easily knocked out when it comes to weight in the case of smash, but is also compensated for said weight class with a way better recovery for when he is knocked off stage versus both Mario versions. All in all, they are the triangle from which people can expand to trying out other characters of smash with original Mario as the starting point.

    • @rotciv557
      @rotciv557 Před 2 lety +20

      Great write up, but I would argue Luigi and Dr. Mario always being characters you need to unlock preclude them from being part of the "Intro Smash characters" group, the other character that I would say is the best counterpart to Mario in this regard is Kirby. Kirby plays completely different from Mario, but his origin also being a Platformer lends to him a basic familiarity with the sort of movements required in Smash. His focus being on great recovery (without needing to rely on specific button and joystick toggles which can easily trip up very young or very new players while in the heat of the fighting) and speedy attacks lends him a very approachable fighting style that many newbies often end up relying on for their first few hours playing any of the games in the series.
      Kirby also has the newbie favored advantage of being quite possibly the most approachable fighter in the entire series in terms of visual design. While Mario has far superior name recognition, most people who boot up the game that happen to take note of Kirby's round, pink frame will always feel comfortable with him no matter how familiar they may be with videogames as a whole.
      In essence, Mario is the character that people who are versed in gaming but not Smash Bros can easily get behind and get pretty decent at using him thanks to his solid and evenly measured moveset and internals, whereas Kirby is a character that most people in general no matter wants or experiences can feel comfortable with using and potentially even excel with thanks to his great recovery, fast strikes and gimmicky specials.

    This is why characters like Toad, Gooey, and Helper2Hero (A character, probably Bandana Waddle Dee, who commands all of the enemies turned helpers in the Kirby franchise) are legitimately good picks.

    glad to see this series return, was always nice learning some of the origins of character portrayals in smash. to be completely honest there was a lot of stuff i didn't know about mario in this like the up throw and the apparent controversy of the down air/B, also didn't even notice the fact that F.L.U.D.D actually speaks when you use his modern down B

    For the "So long, gay Bowser", in the original Japanese release, he doesn't say it and in the updated version called the Shindou version years later, instead of that voice clip they use "Bye bye" because Bowser's Japanese's name is Koopa. Plus the Shindou version has a rumble feature patched the back long jump glitch.
    Also, maybe do Daisy and Chrom in one video since you did the fighters that were based on years ago?

    Might be a little late to the party, but I’m glad you brought back the series. Here is a little fun fact, Mario’s Forward Smash is based off his fire ability in the Mario and Luigi series, it made its first appearance in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga for the GBA. Where he gains the ability of Pyrokinesis, while Luigi gets the power of Thor. One of Mario specials in the game is where he charges up his hand with and shoots an explosive blast of fire from his palm, like in smash. If he fails he burns himself and does little damage, if he succeeds he does a lot of damage and doesn’t hurt himself, is only difference in the move set from smash.

    (7:20) It would have been amazing if Mario said "so long [character name]!" with his throw. At least when it's a confirmed KO. Would mean a lot of recordings, including saying the names in all the languages (since I don't think he's dubbed), but it would still be amazing.

    I still feel that if they make another Smash game, they should cut down the roster and make the veterans have brand new movesets. But also, each of them would have an Echo that would play like they used to. In this case, Mario would have a new move set, and Dr. Mario would play like old Mario.
