6:14 as a kid this door actually freaked me out so much. The other doors were ominous, but it was obvious who was behind them and you could tell by their shrieks and such that they were, at the very least, alive. But the last door? No such luck. No indication of what, or who, is behind (except for the pattern of three other people being locked up in a similar manner) and no sounds audible from behind it.

What if Waluigi was actually behind the door the whole time but he actually died before you got to him? Would explain why the room is haunted and why he doesn’t make any canon appearances outside of spinoffs.

As a kid, the whole d-pad situation never really bothered me. Having grown up playing and adoring both versions of Mario 64, I understand the issue a little more but still think that it isn’t enough to ruin DS for me, and to this day I still prefer it bar none
DPad was fine on the original DS, but not on the DSi, 3DS, or DSlite
I agree with you on that one! By walking on narrow obstacles for example, you would be more likely to navigate through them by just walking without having the chance to fall over and over.

Fun fact: the only copy I have of this my mom found in her driveway, we never owned a copy before this and it was just lying there with no box. No one came over within 2 weeks as well, it just materialized there, I still have the copy.

64 DS is an admirable attempt to squeeze everything about the original with more content on top of that but much like Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D, I really think waiting for the 3DS when they could really pull off a visual enhancement without having to circumvent issues like the lack of analog control and the audio compression would've done so much for this kind of game
No. Mario 64 ds was a system seller. It came out at the exact time it was needed to show off the og ds capabilities.
I actually don't mind having a run button in Super Mario 64 DS, walking with the D-Pad allows you to navigate narrow obstacles slowly with ease.
@@sirmoony5633 you could also navigate easily in sm64 with the 360 movement tho, in ds I had problems where the camera wasn't helpful at all and when walking through narrow obstacles I sometimes just went outside the obstacle instead of just walking in a straight line along the obstacle

This game is so good. Not ironically, not even halfway, it's genuinely really good. It's everything of 64, PLUS MORE. How is it not considered amazing? There's a certain charm to the original 64 of course, but damn, 64 DS is a great package.
The d-pad never bothered me. I adapted to it pretty easily. In fact it makes certain sections even more precise.
Like right?! Such a great game. My Mario trilogy of games was this, New Super Mario Bros, and Mario Kart DS. It was a good time to be a kid back then.
Maybe replayability? I find myself playing more sm64 and coming back to 100% it (there's no other way to play it other than getting 120 stars, I'm not gonna leave it at 70, frick u) than coming back to sm64ds, not even to get all 150 stars, and I grew up with both games and had both games with the original console, yet somehow I still prefer sm64 more, maybe I would play ds more if it wasn't annoying to play in emulator, having to press the y button to run when my phone only supports 2 touches at the same time, making me unable to jump and run at the same time
The changed to character exclusive stuff doesn't add to the game it just replicates DK64's issue of having to backtrack because they decided to arbitrarily block things. That often leads to more issues then anything.
Having to hold a run button with the layout and small size of the device is also really uncomfortable especially since this is a game where you want to run. Even the base game had crawling for precision so forcing walking onto the player just makes it worse.
Then you throw on the hat mechanic and you make everything super annoying and a convoluted gamble which if you lose amplifies the issues with the above in wearing you down. If you win though it feels great.
The issue is you have to win.
Mario 64 ds is actually hands down one of the best games ever made
It still makes me sad that Nintendo will probably never bother to make an HD version of this game. It wouldn't take them much either, it would just be really cool to see an HD version of Super Mario 64, with the added stars and features of DS.
Why make it themselves when they can sue others who did?
Now that I think about it, I think the white door was meant for Yoshi. Bowser assumed he'd chase the plumbers into the castle and get captured too.

Words cannot express how important this game was to me as a kid. Just to be able to escape everything in life and travel to this new magical world with my favorite video game character. I never got too far in the game, but I just loved running around the different levels and seeing what was inside. The music is also very nostalgic, it almost makes you sad sometimes. I would go underwater just to listen to Dire Docks, and now I just cry every time I hear it.
I like to imagine a scenario where Mario is the first to be kidnapped, and then Luigi finds the painting after going all over the castle to find him, and says to himself "Hmm, why would Peach have this portrait of Mari- Aw dammit! Not again!"
I love this game. Childhood memories. Why they won’t let Wario into another mainstream Mario game is beyond me.
Maybe because he was kinda useless. With his slow movements and low jumps he was no fun to play and the only reason to ever pick him because the game forces you with one black block.

Kid me was all about 64DS. It felt like the ultimate Mario game for years to me because I didn’t play the Galaxy games until the 2010s. Nowadays, I still love this game and think it’s a great 3D Mario. Controls are kinda weird, but I can live with it. It’s worth it for the extra characters, stages, missions, and modes. Shoutouts to modern technology, because an analog mod helps me rekindle these feelings I had as a kid
Kinda similar for me but with the original Mario 64. When I was 5 my sister and me got an N64 for christmas with SM64 and Pokemon Stadium. We played the hell out of both games (even if our child had could barely hold the N64 controller right).
But when the DS version came out it felt weird to me. Not just because of the controlls, but I really didn't like that the game forced me to use certain characters for half of the stars.

I love Alaxs drawings so much. These videos are kinda like cartoons already which is why I like them so much, and they give you such a strong sense of his personality.

Ah, my favorite 3d Mario game. I'll never forget the memories.
64DS was my favorite childhood game for a lot of reasons, the appearance of Yoshi as a fully-fledged character, Wario was always a cool addition to the crew (he was my most played character) and it still feels like everything is a new world to me, just like when I first played it. Now of course, there's a lot of flaws with it. but it's got a special place in my heart, and I wouldn't have grown up any other way.
Still woulda liked to beat it as another character though.

This was the game that introduced me to Nintendo in my childhood. My aunt couldn’t pass a level so she gave me a week to try it. One week later she found out I completed the game on a completely new save file

64 DS is my favourite version on 64, it has its flaws and was low-key ahead of its time and would have definitely have been better if it was a 3DS remake but I LOVE the new stuff it added like the new playable characters and the new bosses.

Another great video, Alax! I remember first playing this game when I was four or five, definitely before I got the chance to play the original. I have a lot of fond memories but the controls overall are what kept me from going back compared to the original. Anyway, I can tell you've had a lot of fun with the edits and bits in the past few videos. They always make me laugh, and I always try to make it a priority to watch your stuff as soon as I get the chance. Hope I can watch your streams sometime soon.

This was the first video game I ever played (got it when I was 5). It has a special place in my heart. Yoshi was my favorite character (thought he was a girl at the time). I beat the game with around 100 stars at age 5. I don't know if I could do that as an adult. Anyways, I went on a family trip and lost the game. I didn't even know the title because I never cared about its title. I just knew that it was Mario and that's all I knew it as. I never found it again or was able to purchase another copy because I didn't even know which game it was. Just recently beat classic SM64 and look forward to playing 64DS in the near future to relive the magical moments and the mysteriousness of childhood found in that whimsical game. I hope I unlock old memories and have a jolly good ol time. I think the game is great and is an improvement over the original in some ways.

This game was one of my favorite games as a kid! I still go back to play every now and then. The best part by far was playing multiplayer and fighting for stars while on the bus for school! I'd always go for the Wario hat so I can swing the other players around at each other!
That credits parody song would be great as a single! I expected the usual review about the gripes of the DS version, but you touched up on what made it a neat little remaster, condensed into a short video.
There was definitely some missed potential on the Waluigi rumours, or small cameos, and VS mode, but this video was still great to watch, regardless.
