I love Mario RPGS, with their RPGs and Mario smacked into them. But I had yet to play the mainline Mario RPG that defined handhelds, so thanks to my lovely audience we're playing the first entry to the Mario and Luigi series, Superstar Saga!
Thank you @Ditchu for the lovely thumbnail work! Find them here!

You know attention spans have shortened when this game's attack cycles are considered too long.
Took the words out of my mouth
Dream Team and Paper Jam have some long ass attack cycles (looking at you, Kamek), but this game?
Yea and you know what's also "sad" this is one of the fastest MAL games so saying it's slow is kinda a huh moment
@@Walterwhite-nb9tzoh for sure he would HATE Partner's In Time

Why Don't you play them?@@Michael-The-Composer
I think it's good that there is a difficult version of an rpg experience that requires skill instead of simply spamming the most powerful attack till you win
It's a different breed of difficulty, trading tactics and strategy for mechanical, timing skills.
@JulienfandeWaluigi I think Mother 3 is great in the other way by making moves really feel like they have purpose and music based combo mechanic so good
depending on how you level up you can very much play it like this and it is stupid to 1 shot the final boss with maxxed damage
It has both tbh
Personally, I think memorizing the enemy's attack patterns and timing your dodges and attacks right is all part of the fun. It's really rewarding when you get it right and makes the fights overall more engaging than if it were strictly turn based like Pokemon for example. But I get that some people like more spontaneous action and others prefer more calculated fights, it's all up to personal taste.
I feel the exact same way and that’s a wonderful way to put it. I really didn’t like when the video called it “shallow” because frankly it isn’t
@@admirrad3777yeah it's not shallow, it's quite the opposite. He even says himself it's very complex
@@admirrad3777yeah when comparing to SMRPG this kinda falls apart.
Otherwise I can understand he _prefers_ the simpler battle cycle, but to me what he described as tedious was EXACTLY what I loved about Superstar Saga and why I would recommend it to someone.
If anything Alax showed me that once more in life, there are things I love that other people don't 🤷♂️ And that's fair and all but it sucks to know 😆
Hm sounds like an undertale player

The Reductive Progression Grid actually seems like a pretty good way to analyze how a game is structured. That's pretty useful for analyzing a game's design.
I agree. The only problem is that I have no idea how it works.
The red blocks represent field areas, places where you’ll encounter standard enemies. (random encounters, areas with enemies, est.) The blue blocks represent hub areas, places without enemies and where you can talk to NPCs and/or bond with party members. The yellow blocks represent story flags, important parts in the game that help continue the story, usually by helping important characters, going to certain places or getting key items.
@@justanaveragegamer2609how do you place those tiles ?
@@RemisterRealBasically it's arranged according to what follows what and where it occurs in the map. Starting from the centre with a hub world, you could go left into a field with enemy encounters, followed by a story beat, followed by an enemy field, followed by a hub area.
Or you could go right directly into another hub area, followed by a story beat, followed by an encounter field.
Orrrrrrr the hub area on the right could split in two, up leading you to the story, down leading you to a different enemy field.
Kind of. I *_think._*
What I love about the Mario & Luigi games is that the second game being about an alien invasion and time travel doesn't seem like the weirdest thing in these games.
imma be honest i consider that game to be the most normal of all of them
Bowser’s inside story is the writer’s poorly disguised fetish
@@_carbon78vore,inflation,giant,etc
That should've gotten a remake, not Bowser's Insides Bore-Me. *HEY-OH!*
@@icewing202 It's the most normal for sure, but at the same time it also stands out among the series for having a darker tone and not being acknowledged at all in the timeline by the other games.

Ok but fr starting the final battle at 1 hP IS kinda BS
@@gamingawesomeness222I would have to agree. Aside from that I like Cackletta's soul but that part kinda sours it.
I really dislike RPGs where your character stands idle and takes damage with zero player agency. So the reaction/counter commands in the Mario and Luigi RPGs is a personal favorite of mine, and a huge reason why these are some of my favorite turn-based RPGs. Not to mention the writing keeps me thoroughly entertained from start to finish.
My thoughts too! The action commands give you agency in how much damage you take.
That and just waiting for your turn is pretty boring.
Yeah... not to mention, his complaint of "battles take too long cuz of this system" doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Since you do retaliation damage on countering an enemy's move, you actually move the fight along _faster_ by dodging. They also greatly shortened how flashy and long enemy attacks are in the future games (except for bosses, which is fine because those are supposed to be cinematic experiences).
@@bugjamsattacks take long as hell tho both enemies and player characters
moosesues8887
Yes, attacks take longer, but when you defend you can COUNTER ATTACK them, THAT is what makes the battles go faster. Also, it is far more entertaining and aching for a more Action-y RPG than a turn based one.
Alax complains that a turn-based RPG is a turn-based RPG for 16 minutes.
Yeah, that's how it feels.
I mean at least he admits to really liking the game and just being really critical in general
And then complains the turns take too long?
When did he have a problem with the turns themselves? If anything he would have enjoyed it more if it was a strictly turn based rpg
What a rare sight: Alax actually finishing an RPG.
Almost.
don't think he beat cackletta lol
Yeah I was going to say there's no video evidence of him actually finishing it.
Boiger
I mean, he technically gone through the whole game, so I guess that's count?
Loved the mario and luigi games growing up... shame we're probrably never getting another entry in the series
But we ARE getting that Mario RPG remake really soon!!! I can’t wait
I'm butt hurt that the remasters came on the 3ds instead of the switch
Alaphadream went bankrupt after Bowser’s Inside Story Remake. Unfortunately, I think it’s pretty safe to say the series is dead.
@@Six666Xis fr I feel like Nintendo just doomed Alphadream by forcing them to not only develop one, but TWO remakes on an outdated console
I mean, Super Mario RPG got a remaster(remake? I don't know the difference), and we all thought that series was long dead, so I don't know, keep your head up I guess
Usually agree with you but man idk how you could possibly think Superstar saga is too complex of all things.
Maybe I just have more patience or something but I really like that dodging and countering an enemy isn't just the same thing over and over. :O
He says it's too complex but then at the end says it's too shallow, I like the guy but man that makes no sense
@@Starpotion He’s mad cus he can’t dodge good lol
I like the battle system in the mario and luigi games cause hypothetically you can go through any battle without taking damage
Much like the end of Alphadream, the end of Alax's glasses signal the end of an era.
Next thing in the list, hair.
@@-Chrome- his hair already ended
@@typemasters2871 Where there's a will there's a way.
Supertar Saga has something I like to call "First-Game-in-the-Series-Ittus". Everything good about this game was refined in the later entries, it's just that replaying this game feels weird after the improvements of Partner's in Time and Bowser's Inside Story. The Remake on 3DS is actually my prefered version since if you mess up your attack, you can still deal a good amount of damage
Early Installment Weirdness
I thought Bros Attacks were perfect in this game, and later games diminished them in a way, mainly in terms of personality.
Messing your timing was punishing but funny to watch (and something you'd want to do on purpose for giggles, the animation are hilarious), and you could set the difficulty down if you weren't confident about your timing.
@@TheRealBatabii I see you know TV Tropes too?

"You have to pay attention to the game" is such a weird criticism to give an RPG. Also weird to be thrown off by elemental weaknesses when they've been a staple of Mario RPGs.
Anyhoo, glad to see M&L get some love. Great video, and congrats on your eyes!
I always liked how this game gave Mario and Luigi moments where they just talk to each other in gibberish in order to figure shit out since there’s no helper character.
The combat system in these games does progressively get better and refined with each installment, where personally I think it peaked at Dream Team before they kinda dropped it at Paper Jam.
Bowsers Inside Story will always remain my personal favourite of them all!
It's amazing how Paper Mario is so incredibly mid, it ruins everything it touches
Alax: "Saying you don't like RPGs is like saying you don't like a major food group."
Scott: "...Yeah, I hate grains."
What's more vegan than nothing?
The Mario Bros. are very overpowered because, unlike other RPG protagonists, they managed to defend themselves with a push of a button instead of letting the enemies beat them. Not to mention that the Bros. attacks gives instant damage to the enemies with a satisfying result. It's no wonder why Sephiroth gets his butt kicked by giving him a good old Brooklyn one-two.
The next game in the series: mario and luigi partners in time. Is my favorite rpg of all time.
I've beaten that game with JUST the babies for the heck of it.
'you do your strongest attack first, then you dodge' - summary of almost every turn based combat system
The Italian gibberish is the best part of this game in my opinion XD
I always called it “Brotherese.”
Surprised he didn’t touch more upon this or the fact this is the funniest Mario game ever
@@Tarkus_H Even more fitting!
It's something only Burthas can understand
i speak that way with my Brutha for fun!!!
Okay, the RPG Grid? Genius. The stock image guy dodging attacks with appropriate music? That was simply perfection. You truly haven't lost your edge, Alax
I personally prefer the defense system in M&L. Granted this is coming from someone who’s first experience with turn-based RPGs IS this game, but I feel like these attacks weren’t that long imo. It added a lot more depth rather than sitting around waiting to get hit, it made you think in the time it took for them to attack.
This may have irreparably cemented my expectations of turn-based combat, but I think it was a fantastic idea to have dodge and counterattacks in the game.
Just wanted to say that I adore this thumbnail. I LOVE these games to bits and we'll all miss ya AlphaDream D:
Bowser's Inside Story was your best work, but ironically its return sealed your fate. Such a wonderful series regardless.
The weird art and creature design's definitely stuck with me since childhood as a large source of inspiration, so hopefully they're living on through the people like us that grew up with their games and are making stuff that ooze their influence!
alax makes this game seem like a game thats more way more complicated the older you are with increase of brain size i dont remember this game being complicated at all as a kid
Rest in peace alphadream, you were too good for this world
That final boss battle battle turned me into an adult at age 7
I love how luigi conistently is shown to wear dresses. Like thats just a thing he does. Love to see it
Glad to see you review this amazing gem of a game. And while your complaints about the battle system make no sense, I'm still glad that you mostly enjoyed this game. Honestly I just miss the times where we had actual lore and world building in Mario games...
You're like a blend of Scott the Woz, JonTron, and a little bit of Bill Wurtz. Perfection.
8:23 this editing....IS SO GOOD WHILE BEING RESOURCEFUL!
Never forget Alphadream and the Mario & Luigi series
Killed in cold blood by Miyamoto and Nintendo
I just don’t understand how you can call the most involved, skill expressive Turn based battle style ever “shallow.” It’s like, literally the opposite of shallow. I guess you were calling the lack of customization of your party shallow, but yeah, that’s not what this series is about. I really love the style of these games. The enemies are so unique, and the battle system is engaging in how you deal with each enemy. Do you have to avoid this guy completely or can you strike back and deal with the threat on his own turn? Sure, you might slip up when first encountering those enemies but once you figure it out, it’s very gratifying to know what you are doing and how to deal with the situation at hand. I absolutely love paper Mario, but this series has a more engaging battle system and that’s what truly makes it unique.
The silly story and the fun as hell battle mechanics are the reason why this is my second favorite RPG of all time.
You know this is a god tier RPG when even if you don't like the mechanics, you still like the game.
As someone who is not an RPG guy, I really enjoyed the Mario & Luigi series.
You don't have to invest a lot of time in learning the system and you don't need to grind any levels as you can either dodge every attack or become strong enough by fighting every enemy on screen once.
I prefer these action commands over only navigating menus and tanking attacks by a long shot.
It'll always be funny how a almost 30 year old is struggling to play a simple game that I just learned normally when I was like 8
6:00
TTYD had a ton of back tracking thru those areas, there’s even a whole chapter about visiting all this branches all over again
Genuinely one of my fav. games of all times
Boiger
It's so sad how this guy never fully recovered from those accusations years ago. He lost his edge and his spark and never captured it back.
?
Never before have I laughed this hard at a grown man chanting “I didn’t like it” while doing the floss
Yo, you've probably heard this before, but Bug Fables is a more recent approach to this type of battle system. It's really good, big recommend
Stock Photo dodging might just be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen…
"It doesn't go as far as other RPGs"
My man Persona 5 was literally just Pokemon with a stagger mechanic.

Ah yes, Mario and Luigi, the best jrpg games ever imo
Man, gotta love how Alax bashes Temu whenever he can now lol
"Saying you don't like RPGs is like saying you don't like a major food group."

I liked Bowser's Inside Story way more.😊
Bowser's Inside Story exists tho.
Nah man Bowser’s Inside Story CLEARS
Dare I say that I like this game and bowsers inside story equally
@@paledrakeStarlow makes that game worse than superstar saga by default breh, it’s called Mario and Luigi Bowsers inside story, not Mario, Luigi and midlow…
Well all jokes aside I’m not too big a fan of the 2d sections which are basically half the game and I feel like the bros attacks in superstar saga were more fun and satisfying to pull off (playable bowser was peak tho and really saved the game)
this series of games were so fun to play when i was younger, its a shame they cant make more of them as i still really like pretty much every entry
I've not played a lot of Mario Rpgs but they are esaly the most intresting part of the Mario universe
i cannot imagine how many hours it must have taken to find all of the stock images of this one guy in the blue suit at 8:22, let alone edit this entire sequence
i would like to mention that you may enjoy the other Mario & Luigi games more because
1) hand attacks aren't a thing anymore
2) you get more than 2 characters or a second battle system that's kinda simalair but still different
3) your hammer doesn't fall out of your hands after 3 seconds of holding the hammer button
4) enemy battles are faster (but bros attacks do become longer)
i would definitely say that Bowser's inside story is much more unhinged than superstar saga is due to all the very odd things that happen in that game including a magic hand going up Bowser's butt.
I finished it recently and i dont remember this part
when... did that happen?
@@buzzlightyearpfp7641 happened right after the force feeding scene and is how Peach got out of bowser. which is how Fawful was able to utilize the dark star.

Your editing and sense of humor work really nicely together, as well as when you say things with actual substance. I hope you're happy with what you do here :>
i wonder if he ever found out about the advances in the bros attacks
You think this game is slow? Wait until you have four buttons to worry about and two screens of tedium. Wait until you have to sit in a pocket dimension for your attack. The worst is yet to come alax. Good luck, fellow bro.
Love the video Alax! This was a blast to watch you play
Yooo laser eye surgery is amazing!! I got it about a year ago and it's genuinely life changing. I was practically blind before so it was amazing.
Also great video, I love all these old Mario RPG games! Partners in Time is seriously underrated
Bro really played Deltarune music when he revealed the dodging mechanic, like they are not comparable dude, one is a bullet hell, and the other is dynamic by using the same methods, but switching it up based on enemy and attack, one is Touhou, and the other is the Arkham series combat of RPGs
I much prefer the later games in terms of gameplay but this one's story is great. All the 3ds ones including the remakes actually add the option to hold x to block, and while it only reduces damage and makes you miss out on the counterattack damage it's nice for when you don't know how to deal with an attack
I'd have to look at your streams to see, but it seemed like you only focused on doing more damage, you can get Luigi especially defensive, and Mario fast and more dmg. In that last fight, you can outspeed the boss and heal so you don't go through the pain of instantly dying.
"Saying you don't like rpgs is like saying you don't like a major food group" well I guess scott the woz has finally turned vegan
bowser's inside story is the best one because i like it
Wow I can't wait to watch a video reviewing a childhood favourite game of mine from a really good rpg series!
Alax, you should have at least mentioned the other games... they improve on all your problems with the game.
Also superstar saga was the first game in the series and had much to be improved, thank god that this of all games got a remake that was successful.
That Cackleta's soul clip was mad funny lol
This game is my most replayed super mario game ever. I know this game by heart. I loved to just over level to the point that the last boss in bowsers stomach got one shot from a red pepper splash bros special attack XD. Oh and get every single bean maxed out from the surfing mini game. Those protein shakes were the real steroids.
I'd love to see more games emulate the battle system of Mario and Luigi. I think it has potential, but obviously a lot has to change. I just want to see what would happen if someone tried to give depth to the series in the ways that other more straightforward rpgs get depth out of their combat, but just with that active twist. Maybe that means heavy focus on status effects, maybe that means breaking enemies with weaknesses, I'm not sure. I just enjoy the idea of playing minigames on both offense and defense to maximize and minimize damage respectively, and I'd like to see some systems that force them to feel like they're minigames worth playing.
My guy can't use more than one button at a time lol
You've been killing it with the uploads recently! I recognize the work
The stock imagine action command dance was one of the most beautiful animations Ive ever seen thank you so much for making it

The eye surgeons restored your vision but they took your sanity as a balance patch.
The later installments of the Mario and Luigi series truly show the potential you were talking about. Partners in Time and Bowsers inside story are phenomenal when it comes to the story and battle system. The battle system is complex at first but if 8year old me could get the hang of it I know you can as well. Awesome review and normally I agree on your opinions but this series has a special place in my heart. You gotta give it another chance and play the next installments!!!!!
Man maybe they should have family guy episodes playing next to the combat for ya, yeah?
The stock image dodging was amazing I need more
Relaxalax: "Saying You don't like RPGs is like saying you don't like a major food group."
*looks at Scott the Woz* Damn, son! Are you gonna take that??
Bowser's Inside Story is the fan favourite of the series, but Superstar Saga will always be the best for me.
No other game in the series comes close to it in terms of sheer charm - the entire Beanbean kingdom being a completely original location populated with similar-but-different characters to the Mushroom Kingdom's denizens and monsters, all the red-and-green siblings characters and symbolisms throughout the game, and you can make funny faces on your passport photos! And unlock new ones as the story progresses!
Love the stock image animations
The funny part about using a Deltarune song to show off M&Ls dodging capabilities is that Undertale/Deltarune was inspired by M&L
Excellent as usual!

Don’t feel too bad.
I have an increasingly hard time with the final boss so much that I worked and worked at it until one week before Christmas where I got a Nintendo DS and the sequel to Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. This is and always will be my all-time favorite GBA game.
That final angered me so much, that I had a really strong hatred for Fawful. He works better as a side-the thing you want to kick!
