- Alax back at it again with the games we would like to forget about. As you know, I love Sonic games, but there is one that was both cancelled, and also feels like it was just wiped away by Sega. Today, we yell about Sonic 4.

fun fact: this game wasn't initially developed as "Sonic 4", hell you can see the original name in the background of Casino Street Zone (it was gonna be titled "Sonic the Portable" and, as it suggests, was gonna be a mobile game first)
I played it on mobile as a kid. Back in the iPhone 4 days.
The game isn’t great but I have a lot of nostalgia for it.
That explains the lack of momentum.I mean even Sonic fucking Advance which was also developed by Dimps had momentum.
But if you think in a cheap and easy to do Sonic game that you can make it for a phone,and considering how simple phones were back then...I get it

Is it really only me who thinks that sonic 4 was sorta trying to copy the new super Mario bros style but then try to also make it 2d with cell shading and then made it completely terrible all at once?
Admittedly, this time they succeeded in making me forget about this.

@@evdestroy5304 Adding on to your statement, Eggman's leitmotifs from '06 have lasted a while. I _believe_ they weren't used in Frontiers, but I still wouldn't be surprised to hear them again in future releases. They're a really good set of musical things.

The momentum problem in this game is so perplexing because Dimps proved that they knew how to make good sonic physics with the Advance and Rush games.
I think the problem is that they used the rush engine physics for an advance-classic type of game. Thus, the really weird controls. I wonder why. I suspect that the advance engine was 2D, so they went with the rush engine for the 3D physics. They likely didn't have the time/resources/initiative to accomodate it to the classic gameplay. Also they expected it to kinda fly under the radar since it was going to be a mobile game, then SEGA or ST decided it is sonic four now. That's my guess
And 3DS classic Sonic physics are genuinely on point

I think the answer is simple: Sonic 4 was developed as smartphone game called "Sonic the Portable". For some stupid reason Sega rebranded this mobile game as "Sonic 4 Episode I" to cash in the trend of cheap Xbox Live Arcade and Wiiware games and Episodic releases.
Because this game was made for touch screen devices in mind, removing all momentum makes easier to control Sonic when you have no tactile feedback. So I believe the absence of momentum in Sonic 4 Episode I was a design choice.
For Episode II they fixed the physics, somewhat, but that game got panned by critics despite being better than Episode I.
I learned to count thanks to Sonic! 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, Mania... That's all I can remember...

When I went back and played 06 and Shadow, I loved them. This game was a different story.
If you can tolerate 2006's abysmal hub world, or the fetch quests in Shadow, you should have no problem with Sonic 4.
@@vividcolorandrichaudio6134 No, 06's hub worlds are easy if you know where to go, you're barely ever in them, and shadow's quests aren't bad, they're all extremely easy and usually just involve not ignoring the entire level, the "kill all enemy" quests are something you always do in one run except for the one on the nonlinear ark stage

Can Sonic fans bring up anything else aside from "Baldy McNosehair" when talking about this game's story please? Also the "holding boost" argument doesn't make any sense since Colors is the most platforming heavy boost game. Did you even play the game for more than the first few levels?

And fans back then loved this game because of that. This stigma Sonic fans had with his friends was something else.
I could see why. In most 2000's Sonic games, the fast Sonic levels were the best parts, but were constantly interrupted by the other characters.

I wouldn't really say it was the fans, mostly the critics. It explains why episode 1 had decent reception.

I remember seeing a parody trailer about Sonic 4 and the whole joke around was that storytelling and Sonic friends are the problem we just want Sonic and that's it. I get it Sonic 06 but still it's ridiculous that it was blamed solely on that instead of Sega being incompetent.

I can’t forget about this game because this was my first sonic game; bought it on the wii ware. It was 15 dollars; the biggest problem for it for me was the price. It is just 4 zones and the special stages.
Looking back on it I just found the fact that I was playing a classic-feeling sonic game to be fun, with no context of the originals. Looking back on it today this game and episode 2 has aged like milk.
