Episode 2 was my first ever sonic game, so it has a special place in my heart, but replaying it i could see how "less good" the game actuallly is. I mean it's fun (different from episode 1) and has some bang themes like the metal sonic one, and some cool original boss fights. So with all the flaws show'd in this video i give this game a 6/10 (5+1 point for nostalgia)

There are games that are very well-liked but did poorly financially, so they wouldn't get a sequel, such as Pyschonauts; Sonic 4 is obviously not an example of that.
I think the issue with the animations is that they're TOO fluid to convey speed. you can see sonics legs move at like 60fps and it just feels like he's dragging them. If they cut some frames out of the animation down to the keyframes, it could MAYBE animate well, but you can't save that model.
The worst part is that they had the gall to name it Sonic 4, as though this game stands shoulder to shoulder with the genesis trilogy. If they had called it "Sonic Mobile" or something, I think it would be less hated. You could more easily write it off for what it is - a low budget game for phones. It also sucks that now there can never be a proper Sonic 4 (something Mania probably could've been). They likely won't make a Sonic 5 either, as to not draw attention back to this pile of garbage. Sega ruined any potential for numbered Sonic games.
I enjoyed Episode II of Sonic 4 because it was actually fun and did not feel like an early alpha or prototype like Episode I is. I see the potential behind this game if the team behind Sonic 4 was given more time to work on the game and more thorough testing was done. Does this excuse the final state and episodic nature of Sonic 4? No. To be honest, episodic games, unless you were Tell Tale, always seemed to end prematurely.

@Jude Johnson 06 didn't even _have_ physics, it was just like 4 pretty much but in 3D. It's worse actually. 06 is to the Adventure games what 4 is to the classics. 06 had no momentum, you couldn't even roll to build speed. You ran at the same set speed always no matter what, with a completely straight, stiff, momentum cutting air dash and an absolutely butchered spindash with zero functionality. Every loop or running segment had to lock you into basically a cutscene where you had zero input. This was because thanks to the state of the games physics, the characters were not capable of building momentum or accelerating past their hard speed cap normally.
In all hindsight, I see why 06 was bad because glitches etc. As a kid, I never cared for the glitches and just abused them, but people are kinda assholes, they CAN not make a game look bad BY DOING GLITCHES INTENTIONALLY!!! The game glitches barely even happened either. But I could see what it was going for, personally the story was just beautiful, (Ignore the Sonic x Elise shit.) And I really like the Sonic 06 model, and the soundtrack, MMMMMMMM it's fucking awesome, I loved all the missions there was, shadow, sonic, and silver, all amazing in there own ways. I get some of the speed was off, but it felt natural for mach speed sonic. And just look at P-06 (Project-06) it made it all better, animations, some prefixes to physics and overal character expressiveness, and the the quality.
Fun fact: a few weeks before release the ENTIRE GAME of episode 2 was leaked with the only difference being a “to be continued” screen after the credits. So the death egg not exploding was supposed to lead into an episode 3.
06 also had the basic coding aesthetics of Sonic games, Sonic 4 didn’t even have momentum or inertia, heck, Sonic could walk up walls as if he’s Spider-Man in this game.

I believe that depending on how many zones a Sonic game has and the length of each act, should decide how many acts a zone should have! Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't have that many zones in it, and the acts are somewhat short, so I think 3 acts are plenty for that game! Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles have many zones, (and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles' case, LONG ACTS) so 2 acts are good enough! While I would say that this game has few enough zones for 3 acts to be suitable, due to the reputation of this game, even 2 acts could be too many! 3 act zones balance out Sonic games that have fewer zones with shorter acts (though I'm not sure that this principal should apply to this one!)!
I don’t get why people try to defend Sonic 4 just because it was their childhood. Sonic 4 Episode 2 was one of the first games I ever played and I still think it is fairly mediocre.
I used to like Sonic 4, but after a while you realize what it is. A claimed "sequel" to the Genesis games that -introduce no interesting fun mechanics that aren't forced gimmicks(super combo thing) -no new level themes or environments, there's not a good original idea in any of these games, everything is based of a past game -the fact that there's no originality is shitty on its own, but what really drives that point in is the fact that this game has nothing to stand on, nothing to make it any better than the gems of the Genesis, it takes all of their ideas and adds: -shitty, shallow level design full of bottomless pits and speed boosters(because the physics are so bad that's the only way to get speed) -physics that are a far cry from the Genesis games, as the sense of control and speed I once had are gone, and tries to replicate that with constant speed boosters, but it doesn't work -bosses that are either shameless copies(Ep 1) or drag on too long(Ep 2) -and music that tries to sound like the Genesis games, but forgot to be good and catchy Sonic 4 just pisses me off, the fact that they aren't very good games to begin with is one thing, but the fact that they advertise themselves as "sequels" to some of my favorite games ever, is salt on the wound. The game only tries to appeal to nostalgia, and once that wears off, you realize that the game is shit. An imposter that doesn't deserve to be mentioned as part of the classic games.

@Jude Johnson 06 didn't even _have_ physics, it was just like 4 pretty much but in 3D. It's worse actually. 06 is to the Adventure games what 4 is to the classics. 06 had no momentum, you couldn't even roll to build speed. You ran at the same set speed always no matter what, with a completely straight, stiff, momentum cutting air dash and an absolutely butchered spindash with zero functionality. Every loop or running segment had to lock you into basically a cutscene where you had zero input. This was because thanks to the state of the games physics, the characters were not capable of building momentum or accelerating past their hard speed cap normally.

In all hindsight, I see why 06 was bad because glitches etc. As a kid, I never cared for the glitches and just abused them, but people are kinda assholes, they CAN not make a game look bad BY DOING GLITCHES INTENTIONALLY!!! The game glitches barely even happened either.
But I could see what it was going for, personally the story was just beautiful, (Ignore the Sonic x Elise shit.) And I really like the Sonic 06 model, and the soundtrack, MMMMMMMM it's fucking awesome, I loved all the missions there was, shadow, sonic, and silver, all amazing in there own ways.
I get some of the speed was off, but it felt natural for mach speed sonic. And just look at P-06 (Project-06) it made it all better, animations, some prefixes to physics and overal character expressiveness, and the the quality.
"Sonic 4 Defense Force" sounds like a crappy Sonic Tower Defense fan game.

We now know that it was Sonic Team's horrible idea to turn what was planned to be a very low budget mobile Sonic game into "Sonic 4" for marketing reasons, so Dimps doesn't get as much of the blame for this awful game as they used to.

I believe that depending on how many zones a Sonic game has and the length of each act, should decide how many acts a zone should have! Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't have that many zones in it, and the acts are somewhat short, so I think 3 acts are plenty for that game! Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles have many zones, (and in Sonic 3 & Knuckles' case, LONG ACTS) so 2 acts are good enough! While I would say that this game has few enough zones for 3 acts to be suitable, due to the reputation of this game, even 2 acts could be too many! 3 act zones balance out Sonic games that have fewer zones with shorter acts (though I'm not sure that this principal should apply to this one!)!

I used to like Sonic 4, but after a while you realize what it is. A claimed "sequel" to the Genesis games that
-introduce no interesting fun mechanics that aren't forced gimmicks(super combo thing)
-no new level themes or environments, there's not a good original idea in any of these games, everything is based of a past game
-the fact that there's no originality is shitty on its own, but what really drives that point in is the fact that this game has nothing to stand on, nothing to make it any better than the gems of the Genesis, it takes all of their ideas and adds:
-shitty, shallow level design full of bottomless pits and speed boosters(because the physics are so bad that's the only way to get speed)
-physics that are a far cry from the Genesis games, as the sense of control and speed I once had are gone, and tries to replicate that with constant speed boosters, but it doesn't work
-bosses that are either shameless copies(Ep 1) or drag on too long(Ep 2)
-and music that tries to sound like the Genesis games, but forgot to be good and catchy
Sonic 4 just pisses me off, the fact that they aren't very good games to begin with is one thing, but the fact that they advertise themselves as "sequels" to some of my favorite games ever, is salt on the wound. The game only tries to appeal to nostalgia, and once that wears off, you realize that the game is shit. An imposter that doesn't deserve to be mentioned as part of the classic games.
