The reason why barbosa is so obsessed with apples is because pirates in those times barely saw much land. So fresh fruit would’ve been a huge deal for him, so he obviously liked apples and that’s why it broke him that he couldn’t taste them. But it was a great reaction 😊 check out the others I’m not so much a fan of the last one but the second and third one add to the story line. The humour in them are always great.

Correction: While it's true that pirates wouldn't see fresh fruit, or fresh anything for that matter, the big concern was scurvy, which comes from lack of vitamin C. The solution for that was citrus fruit, not apples. British sailors often had limes to eat, which is how Brits came to be called "limeys".

The stereotypical pirate voice is entirely thanks to Robert Newton, the actor who played Long John Silver in the first major cinematic version of Treasure Island (1950). His west country accent became so synonymous with pirates, it has become a permanent staple of the genre even to this day.

The idea that corsets are super uncomfortable is a Hollywood myth, if the corset is made for the person wearing it is actually very comfortable and helps support your back, women would be able to work in them all day with no problem, the reason it became a myth is because they didn't make custom corsets for the actresses so they were very uncomfortable.

The original ride features the dog holding the keys while pirate prisoners call and whistle at it; as well as the chaos and partying in the town of Tortuga. They could be ill-fitting, they could be for style/fashion rather than function (many later corsets, for instance, and many for the aristocracy who didn't need to do much if any manual labor), even the more comfortable ones were not divorced from creating a desirable silhouette, and so on.

I have to point out, that most of the score was composed by Klaus Badelt, who Zimmer recommended to the movie, as he was busy with The Last Samurai. But Zimmer did still compose couple of the themes, such as the main one, He's a Pirate. I bring this up, because most of the time only Zimmer is talked about, when the scoring was in fact a result of an collaboration.
I've read that the time schedule for the scoring was only 3 weeks, so eventually seven other composers were brought in to quickly compose needed additional music. I've always loved the score so it's interesting to know how much of a "shit show" it was to get it done as quickly as possible. 😁

This was the biggest surprise hit of its year. Saw it in a double feature with Finding Nemo, incredibly fun. Everyone was shocked at how good it was, based as it was on a theme park ride. The real credit goes to Johnny Depp, who crafted that character out of almost nothing, just a script with no hint as to how to play him. Depp based him, to a great degree, on Keith Richards. But it's quite a characterization, and everyone associated with the film said it was all Johnny. Ably assisted by the great Geoffrey Rush. In fact, when the Disney execs saw the first dailies, they wanted to fire him. Said he was too gay. Wow, were they wrong.

Great reaction. The parts of the ride at Disney Land/Disney World that made it into the movie was the attack on Port Royal and the goofiness at Tortuga. The scenes where they zoomed in are highlighting iconic parts of it. One example is the little boy screaming for his mom and the guard tower being knocked over. The other was in Tortuga when the big breasted woman sitting on the barrel pours ale into the guys mouth. All of the characters are totally new to the story but when the trilogy took off they "reimagined" the classical ride to include them and since then I don't think it has the same charm.

Not really sure about ur gripes with Elizabeth but I guess if you found her annoying then u found her annoying. But I think all her choices and reactions in it are completely valid and she's insanely smart and resourceful. U got mad when she was annoyed with Jack when he was sharing that his grand escape from the island was really just bartering his way off with some rum runners. But I would also act the same way she did when you've just been marooned on a deserted island and you find out that the man you're with didn't devise some brilliant plan to escape, he just got lucky and ended up leaving with some other people who happened to stop by, which Jack shares no longer stop at that island anymore anyways. So she's discovered that she has no hope in them getting off since the idea she had in her mind about jack was a lie. And then her burning everything for the smoke signal is SO smart. Who cares if she burnt all the rum.. burning all the rum probably helped it get to that size so quickly anyways. She was so smart and resourceful, especially after she learned that she couldn't rely on Jack to get them off. And she was right. Jack had no plan and it was her plan that saved them. So i don't see how you could think she was overbearing or annoying. She saved their asses multiple times and she did what she had to do to not only survive but to also save the ones she cares about. But if u find that annoying then i guess u find that annoying. I personally love her character and she only gets more confident, involved, and in ur eyes "overbearing" in the next two so...

Well, fun fact, a Corset isn't actually uncomfortable _if laced and fitted correctly._
Its not too different than women wearing a push up bra in modern times. If you get a bra that's not your size, _of course_ it's gonna be uncomfortable AF to wear.
Corsets were usually custom made for the woman in mind, modern productions just skimp out and do a "One Size fits all" approach, which is why it is so uncomfortable if you're making a movie.
The corset in this movie is meant to be a physical representation of how Elisabeth feels about her place in society, being stuffed and choked by the standards of her time and life.
I think it also works as a bit of a joke, her dad was well-meaning, but so ignorant that he didn't even ask the maids. What size of a Corset he should yet his daughter.

The whole thing with corsets and stays like Elizabeth's from the beginning of the film is a lot more complicated than movies like this make it seem. The problem with Elizabeth's corset/stay wasn't so much the corset itself - it's that it was brand new. Corsets and stays really had to be worn in before they felt comfortable enough to wear around, which is why so many actresses hate wearing them nowadays, since any time they have to wear a corset for a shoot they never have time to wear it in. But they were basically the bras of their day, proving extra support.

I knew I was going to enjoy this reaction when you said "stop looking at me swan" in the Billy Madison voice lol I love POTC and it kickstarted my fascination with pirates for quite a few years. I think you'll like the next one because it's funny and the third because it's very pirate-y if that makes sense lol

Elizabeth was perfect. Consider the era, the fact her father is the Governor, she comes from some sort of staus and wealth. Her annyoying overbearing character on the island would have been accurate. The worst part is that, in reality, she would have forever held it over Jack's head that she was right.

    • @VelkanAngels
      @VelkanAngels Před 2 měsíci +3

What? Her "behaviour" on the island had nothing to do with her status. Jack was famous for his "miraculous" escape from that island, as he'd lied about how he did it to other pirates and the story spread. Her reaction was to finding out it was all a lie, not some upperclass prude-reaction to *someone* sitting on *a* beach drinking rum...

Yeah, those corsets weren't pulled as tightly as people seem to think, in that era.The tiny waist era was during the 19th century (1800s), not the 17th or 18th, whatever century this is supposed to be.

Really pay attention to Captain Jack Sparrow, he does not falter on the seas. He is only unsteady on land, he has sea legs and is not drunk. He is most used to being on the sea so he struggles to walk straight on land, this is a real thing when people spend a great deal of time at sea and honestly this was a great character trait for Johnny Depp to utilise.

Oh man, absolutely Princess Bride. But they're both drawing from the same well, they're both doing basically old school Hollywood swashbuckling adventures. Only Princess Bride is sort of being a bit aware of the genre and having some fun with it, whereas Pirates of the Carribbean is sort of trying to play it straight. Reviving the genre, sort of thing.

They actually modified the ride since this movie came out and added Jack as well as different parts of these films to it. But when I was a kid in the late 80's-early 90's, the ride mostly resembled Tortuga. The song that he sings on the beach with Elizabeth was also in the ride.

The scene where Jack sails into harbour in his sinking boat set the mood for the whole movie for me.
For more pirate movies that has been very influential, or I just enjoy, check out Captain Blood from 1935 with Errol Flynn (This one has elements that has inspired every pirate fiction since, from movies to games like Sid Meier's Pirates! from 1987, remade in 2004), Yellowbeard from 1983 (Pirate comedy with Graham Chapman from Mony Python in the title role.), Pirates from 1986 (An underrated pearl in my opinion.) and of course the Monkey Island series of games starting in 1990 where the main antagonist is a demon pirate from heck captaining a ghost ship crewed by undead pirates and the protagonist isn't the most heroic lad in town, but he becomes a pirate over time. Sounds familiar? Oh, and there are monkeys. So many monkeys!

Jack, despite his love of rum, was actually not drunk. Think about the fact he's spent several years at sea, so he is not accustomed to walking on land, so he's got land legs/ land sickness. I got this from being on a moored boat in a marina over a weekend, so lord knows what it's like when you've spent a considerable amount of time on the waves 🤪😬

4:51 my wife watches a CZcamsr who’s an expert on fashion history and she gets upset at scenes like these. Corsets in those days couldn’t be tightened so tightly as to make it hard to breathe because the lacing holes wouldn’t take the load. This is a modern invention inaccurate to actual history.
5:24 he’s either an apprentice or indentured - not necessarily a slave (though white slavery was very common at this time, the context makes me believe he’s probably an apprentice near the end of his contract or perhaps an employee - employee/employer relations at the time also used terminology that today’s context would refer to slavery).
26:09 mutton chops did what most pirates during the golden age did, served out his term in the Royal Navy then went independent, using the nautical and fighting skills he’d learned to pirate
55:00 given you looked the supernatural element of this movie, you might enjoy the book Pirates of Savannah - it’s about Scottish immigrants and pirates in colonial Savannah, GA, and has some supernatural discussion of incidents similar to Mary Celeste.

This is truly a perfect adventure film, right up there with Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Mummy. I was 13 when it came out and I saw it in theaters five times- those were the days when you could catch a matinee and it’d still cost under $10 with a soda and candy lol. I was OBSESSED and so were several of my friends. In fact, I was in a fight with my best friend at the time and we mended it because we so desperately wanted to talk about the movie with each other. 😂
Honestly, the stars aligned so perfectly or the producers sold their souls to the devil for this movie to be so good and to do so well. The pirate genre had been dead since the famous flop of Cutthroat Island in 1995. Johnny Depp was nowhere near a huge star, and Disney famously hated his performance because it was too drunk and too gay lmao. Not to mention it was based on a theme park ride! None of the other movies Disney did based on their attractions even scratched the surface of the quality or success of POTC (although I do have a soft spot for the earlier TV movie Tower of Terror, which I highly recommend that you do a reaction to for Halloween, it’s very cute). Sorry for the novel, I just love this film! It’s such a shame that the series devolves so drastically over its course, this one is really one of the GOATs.
