    Elle was actually an obvious choice for law school:
    1) Grad schools don't care what your undergrad major was, at all. You can get a degree in cello and get into veterinary school. Her 4.0 was just fine.
    2) Being president of a sorority chapter is actually a lot of responsibility. It requires leadership, ambition, people skills, and conflict mediation. Universities know this.
    3) The test Elle had to take to get into school? The LSAT? A perfect score is 180. Elle got a 179. That's an amazing score, over 99%.
    I get that half the point of the movie is how people perceive her visually as ditzy, but on paper, she's an amazing candidate for higher education.

    • @justinnaniong7872
      @justinnaniong7872 Před 2 měsíci +18

      Actually, grad schools do care what your undergrad major is because they need to know if you've taken the required prerequisites to understand the higher order graduate school courses. Otherwise, you need to take a couple undergraduate courses and graduate a bit later or might not get admitted at all. Most med schools require a certain number of math, biology, chemistry, and physics courses before applying, for example. Law school is generally more lax though and their prereqs are stuff you'll take in most general education courses anyway (such as English, writing classes, etc.).

    @pinsandneedles3 Před měsícem +41

    I'm so glad you caught onto Elle's intelligence immediately! Many people are surprised when she turns out to be one of the top students of her class. But in reality we see Elle being smart throughout the film. At the beginning a lot of her knowledge is just focused on areas many people have been told by a sexist society to consider 'stupid' or 'useless' - fashion and beauty. You are so right about her fashion major being a huge potential assett to her studies/career as a lawyer
    Also, I just love how kind she is. People look at women like her (conventionally attractive, sorority, dresses hyper feminine) and think they must be shallow or mean or 'bitchy', but Elle is just a good person all around. This movie was genuinely needed commentary at its time

    It just occurred to me that this movie’s messages are strikingly similar to How to Train Your Dragon:
    1) You can have a goal for seemingly the “wrong” reasons yet still find a better goal along that path that better aligns with who you want to be - in other words, you can course correct and adapt as you go.
    2) Changing yourself for the approval of others - even those you love - doesn’t always have a happy ending. Either they grow to love who you are, or you dump them and find people who will.
    3) Life isn’t usually so black and white. You don’t have to choose between being feminine OR being serious, between being clever OR strong, or between being unique OR traditional - you can break the molds that short-sighted people get stuck in and be both at the same time.
    The greatest positive shifts in both Elle’s and Hiccup’s lives came about through self-actualization - overcoming adversity by becoming the best possible versions of themselves (with some fantastic relational support backing them up and reminding them they can do it)

    26:04 -- Actually, yes, really. Go back again and check Vivian's reaction to Warner's piece of "advice" (at 24:40)
    No, to this point Vivian has NOT endeared herself to us; and now, just like _she_ has made a bunch of quick surface-level assumptions about Elle… we are being invited to consider the possibility that- just maybe- there could be more to her, too, than just the “Mean Girl” we have seen.

    • @dheu

      Yeah, I feel like Vivian is portrayed only as a mean girl on purpose, but there are moments that show she’s not that bad. I mean, how would anybody feel when the ex is basically stalking their fiance, including coming all the way across the country to go to the same school.
      I’m glad they didn’t make her into a stereotypical unrepentant mean girl but had her and Elle become close friends instead.

    Love how quickly you picked up on how smart Elle is, made for a good reaction.
    Here's a recommendation for another 2000s film about a girl new to a school where people underestimate her: (bit tenuous but I still want to recommend it) St Trinian's (2007).
    It was a sort of edgy reboot of a pre-existing series of films from the 1950s/60s which were based off a cartoon strip. It's all about a girls school unlike any other.
    It's rather British, ridiculous, funny and with a good edge to it.

    I love this movie. I had been out of law school long enough that I could look back on it with nostalgia. I was given good advice regarding my application and essay, which was, what they care most about is whether you can graduate and pass the Bar exam. Preserving their reputation and ranking is their primary consideration. So get your references to focus on that. In my essay I was supposed o tell them what one word best describes me and I said "Resilient."
    The classroom scenes with the seating charts and socratic method are quite realistic. I had a Contracts professor who would call on you three days in a row if you had not read the assignment and weren't prepared. One day he actually packed up and left the room because every person he called on was not prepared.
    Of course the internship and the courtroom scenes are absurd, but still great fun. I think every scene with Jennifer Coolidge was my favorite.

    @hera7884 Před měsícem +4

    When she says, “I’m never gonna be good enough for you, am I?” And then she turns around and says, “I’ll show you have valuable Elle Woods can be..”
    That’s the definition of “Burning Determination” and it is dangerous if it’s direct towards you because this person has just made every goal in life to be better than you at everything and she did, because she stole his girl too.

    This role could have gone to any cute starlet, but Reese Witherspoon is a top tier actress who has enormous emotional range and it does not hurt that she ridiculously good looking. Her career has been amazing and she remains in 100% control of much of it so she only has to do projects that she really wants to do and with her production company and relationships with authors and creators, she is very very wealthy. She's in that Cher, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts category where she doesnt have to audition for roles anymore.

    I haven't seen the musical, but I've heard that the "Enrique is gay" thing isn't just based on him knowing shoes, it's more substantial. Elle bends and snaps and the witness doesn't seem interested, and she's the epitome if societal beauty standards, so she concludes he must be gay. Not exactly airtight, but a little better than the shoe thing.

      Yes, you're right! Having seen the musical multiple times, I can confirm. The Bend and Snap in the musical is said to be 99.99% effective on "straight men" (and lesbians, if Enid Hoops' reaction is any indication. Basically, anyone who has any attraction to women). The guy has zero reaction to Elle doing it in front of him, more than once. The rest of the legal team points out they can't plan their strategy around outing him on the stand in case they are wrong, and have a whole song about how you can't tell someone is gay just by the way they're dressed or groomed because different countries have different standards of what's masculine and feminine. (They also changed Enrique's nationality to Greek instead of Latino and changed his name to Nikos so they could do a joke about Europeans without hurting minorities, so there's that?)

    I love Elle. People underestimate her, judge her, make fun of her, and project on her. They’ve met blonde girls who are bitches and judgy and call them names and look down on them. But that’s not Elle and they assumed she was that. Elle is very kind. Notice when Jennifer Coolidge’s character asks about Vivian - she says she’s not unfortunate looking or whatever, a lot of girls would be like she’s ugly, I’m better bla bla bla - but even her insult wasn’t that unkind. Elle is only unkind to those who are unkind to her.
    And she is smart she just focuses her efforts on different things. Leading a sorority takes a lot of work - planning, responsibility, working within a budget, etc. it’s not my thing, but it’s not ditzy. And she’s super into fashion and knows everything about it. It’s her special interest.

    Also: Yes, I agree with your title lol. This movie is er filled with stereotypes. But it’s also a very funny fantasy about the hilariously feminine Elle, who doesn’t apologize for who she is or feel threatened (at least not *most* of the time). She rarely lets others’ obvious judgment bother her, and she doesn’t judge people for who they are-unless they come for her first.
    Many people, especially women, feel guilty for taking up too much space and not thinking of others before themselves. Elle does have a few insecurities, but she also doesn’t bother much with that guilt. She does what she can for who she can when she can and otherwise just tries to enjoy life.

    Btw the Vivian hate is a tad too much (although understandable)… from her perspective her high school sweet heart who she reunited with over the summer proposed to her, and his ex girlfriend who had in between (or maybe even during, we don’t really know) just showed up in the same classes hitting on her man, who is engaged! I would be mad too 🤷‍♀️ but when they get to know each other, and Vivian sees more of Walter’s character she changes her mind, and that’s a GREAT character arc imo
    This movie is all “don’t judge a book by its cover” and female empowerment! Feminism 101. You can be girly and smart, you don’t have to antagonise other women to be successful, or put down their dreams… even her friends who are protraid as actually dumb, they help her achieve her goal (even though they don’t understand it), they come to see her trial etc… it’s all positivity and support and I love it

    About the "dumb blondes" myth: It's an idea born of pure sexism. The notion was that the prettier you are, the dumber you are; that only ugly girls are smart. There was even a very common saying: "Guys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses." And for a long time, it has been prevailing sentiment that the prettiest women are blondes.

    179 is a near perfect score for the LSATs. I hear it’s a pretty difficult test and people typically take it more than once.

      The musical changes her score to a 175, which I feel like is a little more realistic for someone who only decided to go to law school relatively recently, but still shows how smart she is that she got that on the first try.

    • @ravenm6443
      @ravenm6443 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@kateorgera5907 honestly it 179 still wouldn’t be that far fetched. She likely had to take at least business law and other types of theory classes for her fashion merchandising degree.
      I don’t know much about the LSATs but from what I’ve heard lawyers say, when you study law, you’re not studying the actual laws itself but rather law theory and interpretation of law. Elle is very smart and did dedicate a lot of time to studying, so 179 isn’t out of the realm of possibility especially if she’s studies similar things but in a different context. Plus shes pretty laser focused on small detail, which I imagine any fashion major would be. I read in another comment in another video that she was using a legit study method, which, if it works for you, would increase your odds. If anything I probably would have changed it to a 177 it doesn’t have the same rings as 175 or 179, but it’s a solid score. It’s mid ground and still proves her intelligence rather than just having her barely pass, which is still a feat but the point of the film is that she’s actually very hard working and intelligent contrary to people’s perception of her.

    David Kidney(Osgood "Oz" Perkins) is actually the son of Anthony Perkins(Psycho) and is an actor/writer/director. He has an upcoming film called Longlegs in 2024. Reese is actually smart and attended Stanford before her career in acting took off. The book took place at Stanford Law but they would not allow filming so it went to Harvard instead. Reese was second choice and Christina Applegate from Married...With Children was offered the role but she did not want to play another dumb blonde. The graduation part was added on in the end and there were different ending to this film that is why Luke Wilson has a tan and looks out of place in the final scene. Real Judge and reality tv star Judge Judy was supposed to be the trial judge in the film but she passed on the role which she later said she regretted. An in joke, how would I look as a blonde(He has a blonde brother Owen). Both law professors(actors) are really gay actors. Selma Blair even though she has MS is open to do Legally Blonde 3. Similar strong female films: What's Up Doc?, Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell, Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn, and The Trouble with Angels with Haley Mills. Favorite Moment: Warner: You got into Harvard Law? Elle: What like it's hard?
