Movie Summary:
Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who's in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. Johnny Depp and Jack Sparrow ARE the franchise. People forget, he was nominated for an Oscar for this movie. You say “Pirates of the Caribbean”, he’s the first thought that comes into your mind, end of story.
Either they should make a really good send off for his character, so they close his book off the proper way, or simply keep the franchise dead. It simply cannot be done without him.

When Johnny sang "I've got a jar of dirt", actually he was supposed to say something about the jar but he completely forgot his lines, so he just ad-lib it by singing that. The look of the cast when he sang that was real. The director loved it and added to the final cut.

I never cared for cannonball fights until these films. The way they executed it in these films make it so unimaginable but the way it was written and filmed made it one of my favorite ship battles of all time.
Disney better give this man the 300 million dollars and however many alpacas he wants! I'm not watching a POTC movie without Johnny!
Before all the drama I watched the 3rd movie when it came out in theaters while out to sea on my ship while I was in the Navy. We sat on the flight deck of the ship and projected the movie onto the hanger doors. It was a pretty cool experience.

Other the. The one where Barbossa, in terms of iconic. I mean there was that scene of them walking under water with the moon peering through the ocean. But. The delivery of “you best be believing in ghost stories.. you’re into one!” Was a gold delivery and line.

A correctly made and fitted corset is *not* uncomfortable and *does not* hamper breathing. Tight lacing was a high fashion thing amongst certain classes during parts of the Victorian era (and some people choose to tight lace today) but stays and corsets were supportive undergarments that were comfortable and functional for most people most of the time.

This is genuinely my favorite movie. I’ve seen at least 30 times if not more since it came out in 2003. It’s just such a nostalgic story and the characters make it so great!
I watched it because it looked good. But I think it’s rewatch ability has much to do with the strength of Depp’s performance. There’s a reason he was nominated for an Oscar for it.

I hope they will do themselves the favor and not try and make new movies without him, that would be embarrassing.
They’re going to, and as much as I love Margot Robbie (one of the best of her generation of actresses), Depp and Sparrow ARE Pirates of the Caribbean. I would love to see him going on one last adventure, to give his character thematic closure on his own terms, but if he’s not in the next one, might as well keep the franchise dead.
i definitely could not watch Pirates without JD. i remember my sister liking the first movie and I was against it. I never liked pirates (ninjas are better) but wow i was shocked that i fell in love with it when she finally convinced me to watch it

probably been answered already but no, all the lord of the rings movies were filmed in 1 go, and then post production did their magic and released them one after the other, so by the time the fellowship came out everyonewas already back and either doing work or taking a break

The "other dude" you haven't seen in much movies I have only seen in The Kingsman as first Lancelot who dies like 10 minutes in the movie and I wish he was more in it. He was badass.

I seen this movies God knows how many time and no if Johnny Depp isn't Captain Jack sparrow no I wouldn't watch it he's the reason why I watched and bought all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies
Any time I see it I’ll point it out. Elizabeth is wearing Stays, a precursor to the Corset, that were not designed to be tight laced. They work as support for the bust while keeping the fashionable silhouette (most of which was achieved by padding the hips and bum, not restricting the waist and chest). Even in the height of tightlacing in the Victorian era, corsets weren’t that restrictive and breathing was fine (especially if a corset was custom made, if Elizabeth were a Victorian woman she still wouldn’t have fainted, her family has the money to get a properly fitted garment). The heat is the only reason I can see her actually just passing out.
There are many professional costume/fashion historians on CZcams who go into a lot more depth.
I wouldn’t have rewatched it so much if he wasn’t in it.

9 months after upload but I didn’t see anyone answer this in the comments. Orlando Bloom didn’t really go back and forth between this and LOTR even though return of the king came out the same year. The lord of the rings series was filmed all at once before 2001. They spent 18 months filming it all in New Zealand and would go back for a little bit every year for pick up shots. So Orlando had plenty of time to film this.

Holy shit I can’t believe I missed Kano. I have watched Mortal Kombat well over a dozen times and not once did I notice him. He looks nothing like he did in MK, but that “say goodbye” line is the exact same tone he uses in MK.

Although he is the only person who could have been cpt.Jack Sparrow! and actually carries 50%of the series, I would have still watched these movies., growing up and living in Southern California, I've been going to Disneyland since I can remember, I'm 52 now, one of the original rides from when it opened, is Pirates of the Caribbean! It's a must ride when you go, always has been way before the movies came out., I had great anticipation when they started talking about them., and was not disappointed!! Some of the best movies ever made! Imo
at this time Bloom was doing POTC between working on LOTR . More amazing, these were his first Films as a professional Actor. He was right out of acting school.

I might have watched it without him it it...but he makes the film very re-watchable. It's a good script, and the direction and storytelling (especially non-verbal storytelling) is really good. But Depp makes it a masterpiece.

Anyone who steals a piece of gold is bound to the curse. The only way to break it is to return every stolen piece and some of their own blood. When captain sparrow stole the piece, he became bound to it.

I think that you guys should watch The Intouchables...has to be in the original French with English subtitles, though...and then the American remake, The Upside. The Intouchables has Omar Sy and François Cluzet, and The Upside has Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston, and both are excellent.

I watched these movie for the first time last month... after part 3 I noticed that I hardly remembered what Orlando was doing/saying in those movies... he was very boring character to me. I only had my eyes on Johnny. 😂

Caribbean can be pronounced either way. It’s really a matter of preference / accent. That’s how the discrepancy came about in the first place.

Pirates of the Caribbean humanized and fantasized the stereotypical pirate life adventures.
All of the actors were important in keeping the franchise going but only Johnny Depp could have pulled off Jack Sparrow’s sarcastic wit with a wounded heart and sad eyes persona.
I’ve been watching Johnny since Elm Street and 21 Jump Street; he’s still the same guy even as life and circumstances have aged his experiences and acting ability; I saw the man behind the actor’s career inside the courtroom.
He’s good at displaying what he’s thinking through facial expression alone.

I’m way late to seeing this, but I need to point out, the corsets themselves weren’t the problem. As a matter of fact, trying to wear one of those 18th century gowns without a corset would be the equivalent of wearing weights on your chest and your back while trying to run a marathon. In Elizabeth’s case, since she was so high status, she probably would have been amongst the few that tightlaced. Only high society ladies tightlaced, because only high society ladies could afford to lose their breath in the name of fashion.
