      @pr0x1madigital Před měsícem +4

      it could be taken as symbolism but Paul "predicting" the future is hardly magic. Its like mentat but whole new level. He's calculating everything and so he can "predict" what's going to happen. That's why it was said that he needs to see the past to see the future. You need X and Y to know what's going to happen in Z.
      It's one of the possibilities he was seeing at that moment when he doesn't have X and only have Y. This also avoid the most common used BS in time-travelling movies. Paul doesnt know the future, his brain is calculating possibilities and everytime he meets a new person or encounter an unexpected something the calculus changes.
      For example, If paul an jessica were able to fully walk on the desert without attracting the worm Jamis would've believe in him and he would still be alive.

It was smashing into my back. I needed a seatbelt. I reached for my son fearing for his safety. He was screaming with joy! For Hannah... Don't be mad. It wasn't FOR POWER. It was for the long term survival of the Fremen and far later down the road, humanity. Remember, this was the only path Paul could take to save both the Fremen AND Chani. He had to show the entire Imperial court that he was wanting to take Princess Irulan's hand to take control of the Imperium. And what makes this movie one of the greatest TRAGEDIES ever made was the sacrifice Paul had to make so that his loves (the Fremen and Chani) would survive. That's why he told Chani: "I will love you as long as I breathe." He knew the path and how it would affect her. BTW, this is different than the book. In the book, Chani understands that this is a show marriage.
    For Ash... Embrace your Fremen nature. Ya-hya zhou hada!!!! Long Live The Fighters!!!

In the movies (so far), I feel like she’s presented as someone who obviously wants to aggrandize her people, but she is also a young woman going through the throes of love and devotion for the first time. 60:00 I love you guys and you're always entertaining to watch, but if you had paid attention to what was said throughout the movie, you'd know that this is what Paul meant when he said he was afraid he'd lose her. This is the "narrow way through" he spoke of - the only way they all can survive. He is marrying the daughter of the emperor in order to gain the throne and eventually give Dune its green paradise. By *not* choosing his love, he is saving all of the Fremen, and giving *them* a better future. Meaning he is choosing the greater good over his own personal feelings, he is not going after power for a 'bad' reason. This is also what he meant when he said that "she'll come to understand". He declared his love for her before making this choice to make her further understand that she is the one he actually loves and he has no choice. FURTHERMORE he didn't want to go south and if you remember it was actually Chani who eventually talked him into doing just that.

    53:15 - "I will take the hand of your daughter"
    A note from the books, about this point: it is stated, more than once, that the marriage of Paul and Irulan, the emperor's daughter, is purely a political move. Jessica herself explains this to Chani, adding that Paul will never provide any affection for Irulan, and that there will be no intimacy between them (not even to consumate the marriage), and that Chani is and will remain Paul's wife and companion for ever.
    A similar situation, described in the book in several different ways, and at different points of the story, is the one between Jessica and Leto. The two of them had not been married. Jessica's social position was that of being the concubine of Leto, and their marriage had been arranged (partially by the Atreides household, and partially by the Bene Gesserit, who had trained Jessica). However, the two of them had fallen deeply in love, and they were a married couple in all but name. Officially, howerver, it was necessary for Leto to be single and available to marry, in the case that he needed to make political marriage of convenience to another Noble house.
    (spoilers ahead...)
    In the following book of the series ("Dune's Children"), set a dozen years into the future, there is the continuation of this plotline: Paul and Irulan have contracted a political marriage, but Paul stays with Chani, who he considers his true spouse. In one of the court meetings, Irulan complains about this, but Paul matter-of-fact reminds her of the political necessity of their marriage and ends the discussion. However, he is not harsh about it, and even openly suggests for Irulan to take a lover, is she feels lonely (though he warns her to be discreet about it).

    I think the reason Jessica didn't mention she was pregnant is because the current Reverend Mother would have died before the baby was born, and she needs to be alive for the transfer to work.
    The only thing Jessica would gain by asking them to wait would be her own death after delivering the child. The Fremen would then be left without a Reverend Mother and have a new mouth to feed on top of that.
    Instead she gambled on being able to transmute the poison before it affected the baby. Had she failed, at least she would still be alive to ensure Paul's survival and keep things moving in the direction of the prophecy.

    As bitter sweet as the ending was, it follows the books pretty well, besides a few changes and liberties. In the books, Chani understands the politics of Paul’s marriage and remains his concubine because Paul truly does love her and not the Princess. In this, Chani is much more reluctant to follow Paul or even remain his lover but we’ll see how the handle this in the next movie, Messiah.

    Sad that people don't get it. The power is already in his hands because he can see all futures. He knows what has to be done to win the war FOR THE FREMEN, for Stilgar's and the believers' green paradise, for his love for Chani. He has to lose her and even his friendships with the fremen who become war-hungry zealots.
    This story is a tragedy, not a road for a sociopathic power hungry unidimensional character. A lot of reactors do not seem to get it but I guess it is just so much easier if you've read the books.

      I mean, I am literally in the first 15 minutes of the audiobook. I already knew that Paul isn’t the hero and this is not a happy story just by actually paying attention to the first two movies. As an American, I thought maybe it was just an American this but I guess not.

Watching this dude scream and shout just because looks cool like a blind fanatic is funny, but annoying as well. Great reaction!!

    17:00 - Related to what both of you will say in the next minute...:
    According to the book, in Fremen Culture, if a Fremen (man or woman) provides water to the comunal water bassin (seen at 12:30). he is given a set of rings, called "Water Rings", which account for that water quantity. And, related to that, the act of a man entrusting his Water Rings to a woman is seen as a gesture of courtship.
    In the book, Paul and Jessica do give they reserve water (a few liters, that they had in a bottle) to the communal freemen pool. It is Chani herself that measures it, and gives Paul a set of Water Rings corresponding to that quantity of water. Upon receiving the rings, Paul immediately asks Chani to keep them safe. Jessica senses a change in the mood of the people around them, and correctly concludes that Paul, instinctively, is starting to court Chani.

    Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach. He just came one generation earlier than the Bene Gesserit expected due to Jessica having a son instead of a daughter. If Jessica had a girl, the girl was then supposed to breed with Feyd-Rautha and their child would become the Kwisatz Haderach.
    Paul became the Kwisatz Haderach when he drank the Water of Life. That is what Jessica means when she says: “The Kwisatz Haderach will be born in the south”.
    Also, Paul didn’t become the way he became for power. He became that way because he could see that only one future was available where the Fremen and his family prevails, and he chooses to go through with that and to not try to avoid it. That is also why he says about Chani coming around to him again: “She’ll come to understand, I’ve seen it”. He knows she will come back to him at some point.

    Watching this reaction made me realize why Herbert was so explicit with Messiah, the message of the movie really flies over so many people's heads.
    Also, they don't show it in the movie, but Fremen Stietches have factories in them where they manufacture Stillsuits, Thumpers and all the other equipment they utilize. They're not a primitive people, they have advanced technology just like the rest of the universe.

    • @niamhmaloney8750
      @niamhmaloney8750 Před měsícem +2

      Herbert couldn't portray the message properly because of his own faults as a writer. Paul isn't to blame, the Bene Gesserit are Fremen fanatics are. The "message" simply says that good people can make bad or negative decisions, nothing about the in-depth philosophy that Herbert claims to have pressed

    In the book, seen in the 1984 movie and mini series, Jamis had a wife and two sons. Paul adopts Jamis’ family. Harkonnens can use guns against the Fremens as they don’t use personal shields. Riding the worm, if you pry open a segment of the skin, the worm will try to keep it away from the sand. This will keep the worm from diving into the sand. Major difference from the book, If I remember correctly taking the water of life caused Jessica to give birth prematurely. The baby Alia was born fully mature in mind and power, considered an abomination. One of the scariest characters in sci-fi, not introduced here, being saved for the next film. The only one scarier than Alia is Hannah. Her understanding of this film qualifies her as a Bene Gesserit Witch.

    In the book, the time frame of the story is that from the fall of House Atreides and Paul and Jessica's escape, two years pass before Paul triumphs over the Emperor. During that time, Alia is born. She has the full knowledge and abilities of a Reverend Mother. Alia is a terrifying figure being a two-year-old who can (and does) kill, uses the Voice, and acts like an adult. She will be extremely important in the next Dune film based on the novel Dune Messiah.
    In the book, Chani never stands against Paul. She believes in Paul, accepts the prophecy, and is one of the most loyal to Paul. In fact, there's a heartbreaking part of their story not covered in this film or the 1984 version directed by David Lynch. I won't say what, because it is horrific, and happens during the final battle. When Paul takes Irulan as his bride, it is strictly so he can ascend the throne and become Emperor. Jessica even consoles Chani about this. "“Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives.”
