    I was fortunate enough to be one of Jack Sparrow's crew (the ones he picked up in Tortuga) in this movie and actually played a different role in the third movie, At World's End. You can even see me here and there during this reaction video. We filmed for a few months in Hollywood then went to the Caribbean for six weeks. When the movie premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, it came as a total surprise to us to find they had included our names in the credits. (Extras - even featured extras - rarely get their names in the credits.) It was an absolute blast working on this movie and getting to know everyone on the crew. When I went back two and a half years later to do the third movie, almost all of them remembered me.

    Elizabeth's father is played by Sir Jonathan Pryce. In _Game of Thrones_ he played the High Sparrow.
    Johnny Depp's inspiration for Jack Sparrow's vocal and movement style was Keith Richards.
    _Davy Jones Locker_ is an old term for dying in the deep sea. When a sailor is lost at sea or a ship sinks it is said they went down to Davy Jones Locker.
    For a nice fight with a giant squid you should watch the 1954 adaptation of Jules Verne's _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea._
    There are some great pirate movies from the Golden Age. I recommend _Captain Blood_ (1935), _The Sea Hawk_ (1940), and _The Master of Ballantrae_ (1953) all starring Errol Flynn.

Of course, he became a figure of some controversy with the Broadway transfer of _Miss Saigon_ (1991), in which he was cast as a Eurasian character. (In the original West End production the casting raised no eyebrows.)
      I mentioned _Game of Thrones_ because Dawn recalled him from that show.

    The trick with the overturned boat with air to breath while underwater is the concept used for centuries to dive for pearls in deeper water as well as how sunken ship treasure was recovered before air pumps and scuba were invented. The common term was dive bell since in most cases it looked like a big bell.

      But Luke Dawn said, the overturned boat trick would never work.
      The trick was tested on an episode of Mythbusters, and there were certain things that would not allow that to happen. One of them was simply trying tol hold the boat like that while being underwater. It would take too much strength.

    • @CxOrillion
      @CxOrillion Před 3 měsíci +8

      @@ronfehr7899 not just that, though. Think about it: The boat floats when full of air with 2 guys in it when it's upright. So even when it's upside down, if it's full of air it will float with 2 guys in it. It's a question of buoyancy.

    • @akiraunio5227
      @akiraunio5227 Před 3 měsíci +3

      The timber in a wooden rowboat has enough buoyancy that it actually will not sink even if there is no air pocket. With an air pocket it requires a lot of weight (from stuff that would sink on its own like metal or rocks) to pull that underwater. Since humans are pretty much same density as water (you can control whether you sink or float just with how much air is in your lungs), humans can not hold a wooden rowboat underwater.
      Wood will eventually sink, but it takes time to wood become saturated with water.
      And if the air pocket in the boat is about the height of human head (about 30 cm / 1 foot) the amount of weight to pull the boat underwater would be over 300 kg (650 pounds) when using barbells, aka solid metal objects, even on a small boat. As it was stated in a previous post, Mythbusters did a segment on this.
      But hey, that's Hollywood for you. Reality should not get in the way of entertainment.

    • @TheTartanSpartans
      @TheTartanSpartans Před 3 měsíci +4

    Well, in their case it was easy to find them. Elizabeth was from Port Royal, her dad was the governor of that island. They were leaving Isla de Muerta so it was safe to assume they were going back to PR. Its a straight line, if you know you are faster than them, you will eventually catch up.
    As for real navigation, they used dead reckoning whichis an estimation that comes from your known position and the speed you are going with you can estimate with good accuracy how far you are from your point of origin. They used a tool called a sextant that could measure the angle between the horizon and an astronomical object like the Sun ( daytime ) or Polaris ( night ). From that angle they were able to calculate their latitude. It could also be used to measure horizontal distances between celestial object in order to calculate longitude. It's pretty amazing how accurately they were able to determine their position.

    Okay I’ll explain the Black Pearl was Jacks ship. A mutiny happened and Barbosa took over the ship and crew and abandoned Jack on the island. The crew then went on to find the cursed treasure and they took it all. Wills farther Bootstrap Bill didn’t approve of Jacks abandonment and taking the treasure so to punish Barbosa and the crew he secretly gave a peace of the treasure to Will so Barbosa and crew would remain cursed. They didn’t realize until after killing Bootstrap that they needed his blood. When they found Elizabeth she lied about her name Barbosa thought they found one of Bootstraps bloodlines and they could lift the curse. At the end of the movie Will cut himself and dropped all the coins in the chest and his blood lifting the curse.

    • @TSIRKLAND
      @TSIRKLAND Před 2 měsíci

      Theoretically, it could work. Air can be trapped that way. Divers have used it for a long time.
      But realistically, you'd have to carry the boat floating upside-down on the surface of the water. That much buoyant air would never succumb to being carried along the bottom of the water, unless you had a couple dozen cannonballs in your pockets, and the boat strapped under your armpits. Holding on with just your hands, walking nonchalantly along the sea floor with a boat full of air: a film-magic stretch of the truth. Breathable air in an upside down boat: yes. Specifically as illustrated in this film: not exactly.
      It's always more fun when you take something that's probable, and carry it to an improbable extreme: voila! Movie magic!

    Davy Jones is derived from the term Davy Jones’ Locker, a metaphor for the bottom of the sea, the state of death among drowned sailors and shipwrecks. Davy Jones is like the devil for sailors.
    Barbossa can’t be brought back from his corpse being given a coin. Someone has to take the coin directly from the chest to be cursed themselves. He for sure died.
    Bootstrap wouldn’t be dead because he was also cursed. But once the curse is lifted, he’d probably be crushed by the water pressure, or drown

    You were asking about how pirates can tell where they are at sea without a GPS or digital map? Its actually a real world skill of navigating using stars. Sailors, and specifically ship captains, would often study the positions of the constellations and star positions and movement (from the world turning) to determine which direction they are heading and what landmasses would be near based upon maps, a tool called a sextant, and a standard compass. Its actually really fascinating learning about.

    The trick walking under that overturned rowboat would've been having enough weight to remain on the bottom, and the strength to hold onto that much trapped air. Could've been possible with just about half the air they showed and extra weights. This generation largely has forgotten how to use physical maps and charts! Davy Jones' Locker is an ancient metaphor regarding the place where drowned and lost-at-sea souls end up.

    Another fun reaction. You are a joy to watch a movie with. When this came out it hit all of the right buttons. Every one likes a fun, romantic, action adventure, and one with a lighthearted spirit. Next, there had not been a well made big budget Pirate adventure in years. Now add young stars, an inventive Johnny Depp performance, and every Pirate movie theme for the parents and you have the makings of a blockbuster. But it was Johnny Depp and his quirky and funny portrayal of Captain Jack that captured the hearts and minds around the world.This performance made him an international celebrity and really typecast him to the public. He could no longer be an actor in character roles or small indie movies. He was Dor many years… Captain Jack Sparrow. He became rich, bloated, and a shell of who he once was. For him this became a blessing and a curse.

    They could find other ships because ships traveled specific routes consistently due to the winds and currents. So the pirates would know beforehand that eventually a ship would come along a route. If they know when it left a certain place, they can then even predict when it should reach another point on that route, and then wait for them. Then people would sit way up high at the top of the mast in the crow's nest with a telescope (if they had one) to look for the tiny signs of sails on the horizon, maybe 20 miles away. They had to have very keen eyes.

    You probably won't read this, but I'll leave it anyway, just in case. I *love* that you saw Will Turner and said "It's Legolas!" instead of "hey, Orlando Bloom."
    Now, on to Davy Jones' locker. It's sailors' slang for the bottom of the ocean. Like, the really deep parts where no one is going to recover stuff. Davy Jones is the slang term for the Devil, since it might catch the Devil's attention to speak of him directly. Kind of the way people come up with new slang words to avoid catching the CZcams censors' attention. Sailors being really superstitious is not just a stereotype, it really was a thing. Lockers were locked chests where sailors would secure their belongings. So where would the Devil stash things he had claimed, to keep anyone else from getting at them? The depths of the ocean.
    I suspect the 2nd and 3rd movies were sketched out when they made this one, just in case people liked it, but I think they made this a standalone movie just to test how popular it would be. The 4th and 5th movies were definitely something they made up later, based on Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, not the Disney ride.
    Davy Jones and his locker are in the next 2 movies. Those movies are important to show that Will Turner did not just thoughtlessly kill his own Dad. Remember, Barbosa tied weights to Bootstrap Bill and sank him to the depths of the ocean...but Bootstrap Bill was just as cursed as the rest of them. As far as we know, he was just sitting there, at the bottom of the ocean until Will broke the curse. At which point, his own dad would have drowned. So the next 2 movies deal with that.
