Reacting to TOP GUN (1986) | Movie Reaction - Zábava
You cannot pick your own call-sign or nickname in the military. Your fellow pilots, sailors, or soldiers will give you one.
Dawn Marie, callsign 'Gigglebox', she is a civilian, you do NOT salute her.
Giggles is about right !. Semper Fi
They christend me PRIVATE PARTS
Usually involving something embarrassing. As is tradition.
Best one I heard was SLAG given to a new pilot after his first launch off a carrier. It sounds kind of badass except that they named him that from his reaction to the launch: It stands for "Screams Like A Girl." LOL!
13:25
Dawn Marie: "30 million, where do they get the money for that?"
American Taxpayer: "Hi."
Dawn Marie, the US spends hundreds of billions of dollars on our military each year. Yes, our fighter jets cost tens of millions of dollars apiece. And that is also not counting the millions of dollars that each missile costs. The US spends A LOT of money on the military.
$30 million ... cheap.
Today's F-35s have a $82.5 million price tag.
haha Dawn has the best quotes in some films, Im 16 min in and cant wait to see her face when that scne with goose happens. YOU must see the huge follow up film that Cruise got into theaters after the SHAMDEMIC and the real look at flying one of those fighter jets, as the actors were in them with real pilots in a lot of the action scenes
$30 in 1985 is $88 with inflation@@jkbowers56
Western civilization: “thanks”
U.S: “your welcome”
Nobody tell her what a stealth fighter costs, she might faint.
nobody tell her how much an air=air missile costs and the fact you just shoot it and you might even miss. Its like pissing millions of dollars :)
My folks and I saw this in the theater. Ostensibly, it was for my Dad's birthday. In reality, I think it was for me, since I was absolutely obsessed with military jets. I was on the edge of my seat, for most of the movie. The next day, Dad woke me up before dawn, and took me to Naval Air Station Oceana, in Virginia Beach. That's the Master Jet Base for the East Coast, and Dad was stationed there. On his way to work, he dropped me off on the back porch of the Air Operations building, at the flight line. He gave me a pocketful of change, and a disposable camera. I spent the day watching F-14's, A-4's, F-18's and A-6's flying, up close and personal. I even met a few pilots, and scored a few squadron patches. One of the very best memories of my entire life!
A6s? back in the good old days. My dad was retired Army, surface to Air missiles. When he needed his medical work done in his civilian life we drove 3 hours to an Air Base as it was closest. I went with one time and sat outside medical reading a book watching B52s cycle through touch and goes. Suddenly I heard an engine that sounded way different from the usual Buff's Pratt Whitney's. I got my first sighting of an A10. They were up practicing for an air show that was later that week. I saw me first ever cobra move. Ever since the A10 has been my favorite plane. This was just before the Warthogs entered service.
I currently live across the river from The Blue Angels home base. Luckily I grew up in the flight-path for JFK Airport so planes don't disturb me.
Dude, that had to be the BEST birthday ever. Absolutely amazing memory, and thank you for sharing it with us.
Not just a "man" movie. The reason this was such a blockbuster movie at the time, and now, is bc men and women both loved it. In 1986 when it was in theaters, it remained in theaters a long time bc women loved going back to see it again and again, esp when it hit the dollar theaters.
Highest grossing movie of 1986!
It's also a gay movie. There are a lot of shower scenes, homo erotic scenes with Ice and Mav staring deeply into each other's eyes and that volley ball scene. "This gives me a hard-*n"... "Don't tease me."
Lots of 80s action movies were loved by both. What a great time it was!
No, Goose is a backseater. He's the radar, radio, and weapons officer.
A wingman is a second fighter jet that stays behind or alongside of you on a mission. A Wegmans only job is to shoot down any fighter jets that approaches.
Exactly. The technical term is RIO (pronounce "Ree-Oh") or Radar Intercept Officer. Basically Goose's job was to run the radar and act as a second set of eyes to watch for threats. In the initial briefing at Top Gun, you can hear Viper talking about how the best pilot and RIO from each class have their name on a plaque at the back of the room.
@@CxOrillion correct. They were called RIOs back then, but in the the Super Hornets they call the back-seaters WSO's or weapons systems operators.
@@CxOrillionFor years I thought they were saying “Rears.”
I always thought they were "REELS"
@@CxOrilliongreat explanation. An additional task the RIO could perform is to lock and fire both the AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. The pilot had the ability to fire the AIM 7 and AIM 54 as well, and only the pilot could launch the AIM 9 Sparrow, use the M-61 Vulcan 20 mm canon, or drop bombs.
I just wanted to give a little appreciation to a man who gave his life for this movie. Art Scholl was one of the best stunt pilots and filmed many films. He was involved with Top Gun. For one of the scenes his plane went into a spin to create footage for the F14 flatspin. His last words were "I have a real problem." His plane crashed into the sea and pilot and plane were never recovered.
I've been a fan of his before Top Gun. RIP.
That’s thirty million dollars in 1986 money. Today that would be eighty-five million.
Russian Aircraft Corporation "MiG", commonly known as Mikoyan and MiG, is a Russian aerospace and defence company headquartered in Begovoy District
thank you! I was hoping someone would answer in a comment. :)
Mikoyan-Gurevich.
You forgot the G, Gurevich
And Northrop was an American aircraft manufacturer until they merged with Grumman in the 90s forming the company called Northrop-Gruumman nowadays. :)
Mikoyan & Gurevich the leading designers of Soviet fighter aircraft. Their work bearing the acronym
MiG= Mikoyan & Gurevich. (The i in MiG is the Russian word meaning, and.)
Tom Cruise had a few films already under his belt, but Top Gun really made him a superstar. Some of his early work includes Taps, All the Right Moves and Risky Business. All are worth a watch.
Plus The Outsiders, which launched several careers including Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez.
I had to pantomime a movie for family... I got...

Yep... Did the whole thing... I guess I won that night, huh?
czcams.com/video/G2UVsyVLLcE/video.html
"Risky Business" made Tom a star. "Top Gun" made him a SUPERSTAR!
As is Legend. Cruise's first lead, I think. Admittedly not everybody's cup of tea, though.
You really left out Legend? With Tim Curry playing the best demonic character ever? :P
Definitely check out Maverick
Goose's real name is Nick Bradshaw, Maverick is Pete Mitchell, Iceman is Tom Kazansky, Viper is Mike Metcalf, Jester is Rick Heatherly
1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this.
2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash.
3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men and the men working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out😎
4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano" She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.
13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (Besides Navy recruitment).
So much info🧡👏
Flight of the Intruder is a good movie, but better book.
Agree. I've read all the Coons books.@@corpusD
Witness is a great movie, really underrated IMO. That director, Peter Weir, really likes doing those fish out of water movies (like Dr Maturin in Master and Commander, another Wier movie, being the odd man out among all those Navy guys, the O'Brien books are definitely worth a read) except that this time it's the big city guy being the fish out of water among the Amish, a bit of a table turn. There is something timeless about some scenes in his movie, one could be watching it at any time over any number of centuries, like the scene where the cats are fighting in the barnyard and Ford's character is sitting there watching that wind driven rocking pump on the well or in Master and Commander with the long shot of all those sailors climbing up and down that rigging at change of watch.
I get, between Top Gun and A Few Good Men, the idea that Tom Cruise has some emotional attachment to the navy in an outsider looking in sort of fascination with it all.
Meg Ryan and her musician boyfriend Mellencamp are a pair of leftist crapweasels.
If she likes seeing things under the sea, she should watch Das Boot.
After all these years, the F-14 is still a GORGEOUS plane, both in the "swept wing figuration" for speed and "split wing figuration" (wide open) for agility.
Love the F-14. My favorite!
That would be wing CONfiguration
It can be due to nostalgia, but for me it's jetfighter perfection.
It really is. Sure, it’s been surpassed technologically, but it really is a gorgeous fighter.
I got to see them back then but I never got to see one fly in person.
Top Gun Maverick is amazing and I think you'd absolutely love it.
I loved Top Gun and expected Maverick to be great. I didn't expect it to surpass Top Gun so spectacularly.
Val Kilmer in Real Genius and Top Secret
The Saint.
You are Genx like me I’m guessing 😊
Top Secret is 100% a Dawn Movie.
Great soundtrack@@Lonejustice1
The Doors.
18:04 "His poor boy" - If only they had made a sequel with the boy all grown up...
That's a ridiculous idea, a sequel like that wouldn't be made for decades, until like...I dunno, 2022. Or something. Ridiculous.
LMAO......@@PeterDavid7KQ201
@@PeterDavid7KQ201 And it totally wouldn't make people believe in the idea of such future sequels for anything else...
Tom Cruise's original teeth starred in the 1983 crime drama "The Outsiders" along with a stacked cast.
The pilot helmets are equipped with sun visors but they are not dropped down for the movie purpose.
Goose is a RIO or Radar Intercept Operator, he sits in the back and operates the F14 Tomcat's radar and radios and long range weapons and whatnot. Basically Goose's job is to figure out where the bad guys are in the sky and then tell Maverick who is "doing the pilot sh*t" what direction, altitude and whatnot is best in order to intercept those "unknown" called "bogies" and unalive them if they indeed turn out to be bad guys. When it comes to his death it represents a real "problem" with the F14 in the sense that sometimes the canopy would not be far enough away from the aircraft by the time the seats got yeeted out of the aircraft and crewmen ended up slamming into it on their way out, killing them. The "flat spin" is also something that the F14 was prone to when an engine malfunctioned, engines on those were so far apart that when you lost one the plane would be thrown into a spin.
The RIO is also in charge of countermeasures and ecm.
That problem with the ejection seats was discovered and fixed rather quickly.
The RWR sounds are also not accurate in this movie, nor are the HUD that shows a targeting reticle.
The movie also shows the RIOs grabbing a bar in front of them to help them turn in their seat to look around. While this is accurate the bar is actually much closer to the back of the pilots seat and also has controls for launching countermeasures on either side of it. If they tried to show it as it is in real life the camera would have to be where the pilots seat is.
Yeah in which case if they're enemy then they're called bandits.
This is the earliest movie I can remember where my friends were saying things like: "Don't wait to rent it, you gotta see it on the big screen."
My brother and I waited 2 YEARS for this to come out on video. SUCKED!
R.I.P., Goose
Spoiler alert! Geez man! Next you’re going to tell me Darth Vader is Lukes Dad!!
It is never a good idea to be nicknamed "Goose" in an action movie, and especially not if you're the protagonists best friend. Precedent was set by Mad Max.
The character 'Psycho' is featured in the movie "Stripes," not "Top Gun."
"Lighten up, Francis."
You saw him Val Kilmer Tombstone. He was Doc Holiday. " I'm your Huckleberry! "
The $30M cost of the F14 was in 1986.
The US Navy now flies the F35C which costs about $110 million.
"I love goose, hes the best !!" ... uhhh about that.
Goose's wife is the actress, Meg Ryan, who went on to mega romcom hits starring in films opposite Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal and Hugh Jackman. She is still active in film today, however, more as a director and writer than actress.
You may have recognized the bald officer as the Principal/Sheriff from the "Back to the Future" movies. The one with the mustache is Tom Skerritt from "Alien".
Navy recruiters were outside the theater to sign everyone up.
Weird that anyone would be eager to sign up after watching Goose die by random equipment failure.
This movie was part of a series of things that made me not want anything to do with the military. The first was people reacting like they just stepped in dog shit when they heard my dad was enlisted Navy. The second was seeing my parents and friends’ parents basically not have real relationships because dad spent so much time away.
I’m sure a lot of them ended up painting bulkheads, wondering where their lives had gone so wrong.
It's a return on investment. Almost every Hollywood movie that features the military has direct oversight from the military. So much so that they usually have a hand in funding the movie. They want the military, government and the U.S. in general cast in a glorious light. Seed the public consciousness with this and they end up getting people's support and even them signing their life over.
30 million in the mid 80s is about 85 million dollars today.
But the cost of an F22 is actually 350 million per airplane
I love that Iceman is closest to the classic ‘antagonist’, and he’s both 100% right and as skilled if not better than the hero.
I thought that the Russian MIGs were the antagonists 😕
@@stevesmith4600I said classic antagonist, like someone who is a co-lead of the film who has an actual speaking part and conflict with the protagonist. The MiGs were enemies but not really a counterpart to the protagonist.
@@michaelhandy9758 Iceman was the "antagonist". MIGs were just the targets. lol
@@silvervibranium2832 yep, four of them had to die because their idiot leaders thought it'd be a good idea to fire on American aircraft with a whole ass carrier group a short flight away.
@stevesmith4600 The movie isn't about the Cold War with the Soviets. It's something like Rocky, which is more about the character development and personal relationships rather than boxing. The inclusion of Russians is merely an external force playing a small part in Maverick's growth.
TAPS was Cruise's first movie. He and Sean Penn were supporting characters. Timothy Bottoms and George C Scott started in it.
It wasn’t The Outsiders?
Tim Hutton, not Bottoms.
@@BouillaBased Thank you! Brain fart on my end.
According to imdb, Taps was 1981, The Outsiders 1983. Both GREAT movies.
Goose is the navigator... the Radar Intercept Officer
wingman is a pilot whose aircraft is positioned behind and outside the leading aircraft in a formation.
Oh of course yeah RIO for some reason thought it meant Intelligence Officer, makes sense I suppose lol.
Now you must watch: "Top Gun: Maverick" one of the best sequels ever!!
"Top Gun Maverick" got me and many others back in the theater after COVID.
Yes Dawn see Top Gun Maverick.
But I would suggest to watch Hot Shots! next. ;)
Now you've seen both this and Airplane, you absolutely must see Hot Shots, you'll love it!!!
The man like commanding the control tower in Airplane, is the Admiral in Hot Shots haa! He's frigging hilarious!!! (In part Deux he's been elected POTUS as well haha).
YES! Hot Shots is hilarious.
@@evatescheThe ref to the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket, when he's giving that huge bolloking kinda haha 🤣🤣 When the non-spoof one played by Gunny who's shouting orders lol (R Lee Emery I think his name was, he died a bit ago though)

The coin rolling trick is called The Steeplechase Flourish
Saw this about 100 times when it first came out in ‘86. My sister worked at the movie theater.
I was in my 4th year in the Navy when this movie came out. It was a great recruiting movie. Goose is a RIO, Radar Intercept Officer. He sits in the back
Cougar is the Pilot, Merlin is the RIO.......
@@CoastalNomad Thanks for the correction. I meant to say Goose is the RIO
@@RetiredSailor60 We all have Goofs from time to time...... I mixed up some actor brothers in a reation last week...... LoL
A high-school friend of mine wanted to be a fighter pilot so bad after seeing this movie. He had the grades and even a pilot license but couldn't pass the eye exam. He was devastated. I think he's a plant manager for a mattress company in Oklahoma now.
MIG is Mikoyan Guerrovich (probably misspellled that), the company in the Soviet Union that, along with rival Sukhoi, built essentially all the fighters deployed by the Soviets. Here its used as a generic term since they don't know the actual type of fighter just from radar. The'Mig-28' is totally fictional, the aircraft shown onscreen are American F-5s with a bad-guy paintjob.
Goose s real name is Nick Bradshaw.
There's a bit of fighter pilot lingo here. And it's not just slang - the point is to avoid any confusion. And so - "bogey" is a plane of unknown status. "Bandit" would mean a plane confirmed hostile. When spotting an enemy plane, you'd call out "tally", or "no joy" if you have no visual.
And regarding 11:55 - the "hard deck" represents ground. You are literally asking the ground to be flexible, and move out of the way. Another way to look at it - you may have a plane just outside a country's airspace, and crossing back into it, so you end up shooting down another country's plane in their own airspace - a good way to start a war (although if you've been given "weapons free", all bets are off at that point).
Exactly. The "hard deck" is several thousand feet above ground level in the exercise to give a margin for safety if something goes wrong. It's not just rules for the sake of rules, which is something the film arguably ought to have explained.
You do not give yourself your nickname. The pilots you serve with do. No one gets a cool nickname, no one.
Current day, an F22 is $350 million each.
Hey Gaylord, that's just what your fellow pilots told you. :)
30 million in todays money is ~85 million. A new, 2023 and onward production, F-35 costs around 83 million.
I desperately want to know what my name would be LOL
@@JustLiesNORF-35A's cost that. The Navy's F-35C runs at $102.1 Mil.

My father was a veteran and totally obsessed with aviation. We went to see this in the theater when it came out. I was completely blown away by the dogfighting footage
The guy at the beginning, Cougar...he played the best friend of the main character in Christine and went on to direct Blue Crush and a bunch of other things.
I never knew until recently that the song you said was amazing was done by Billy Idol's guitarist, Steve Stevens.
I think it's worth knowing before watching the sequel that, in that movie, the actors are actually in the planes for a lot of the shots, although they're not at the controls - they used two-seaters to make it look like the actors were flying the planes.
Hence the reason they coudlnt use the Fat Amy in the sequel. There are no two seater variants.
The first movie I can remember Tom Cruise in was The Outsiders. It is a story about a teenage gang of boys from the wrong side of town. A very good movie. Certainly worth watching.
MiG is short for Mikoyan-Gurevich the Soviet design bureau that specialized in designing fighters for the Soviet Union. Soviet design bureaus tend to be named after their chief designer (or designers in this case) in the same way that Boeing is named after William Boeing and Douglas was named after Donald Douglas. The plane Maverick flew was the Grumman F-14, btw, which was designed and built by the Grumman company... named after their founder, Leroy Grumman. There were other designers such as Sukhoi, that made 'fighter type' aircraft but up to the 80s, all major Soviet fighters were MiG designs. In Korea, they fought Mig-15s, in Vietnam: Mig-17s, Mig-19s, and Mig-21s. Hence the generic term of 'MiG' for a Soviet fighter. One big difference between Western (US,UK,etc) and Soviet aviation is in the west, the same company usually designs and builds the aircraft while in the Soviet Union, the designer would only design and build the first few prototypes.... production would be handed over to a state-owned production facility rather than being performed by the designer's bureau. If that didn't put you to sleep, nothing will. I'll shut up now....
My dad's callsign was Witch Doctor when he flew helicopters for the US Army. They don't get to pick their own. It's a nickname that your fellow pilots come up with.
So do you know the song by Alvin the Chipmunk?? LOL
@@fiddiehacked I never heard the story of how he got the name, but yeah I know the song. Maybe that has something to do with it, idk 😂
I love this movie.
I watched it in the cinema when it came out and fell in love with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis.
It was phenomenally made, and after 38 years, it hasn`t lost its charm. Like most American military movies, it was sponsored by the US Army, the reason being that the Army was running short of Navy pilots.
In 1986, we all knew it was a US propaganda movie, but we loved it anyway.
The soundtrack is fantastic, especially in the Summer :)
No matter which Tom Cruise movie you pick, his name is always a guarantee of quality.
Take care my friend, and thanks for another great reaction❤
The Army and the Navy are two separate entities. This is a Navy movie and was funded by the Navy to promote Navy recruitment. (the US Army has NOTHING to do with Navy pilots)
"$30m!" That film was nearly 40 years ago. Modern F35Bs that train in the skies above Scotland are $136m, each. Thanks for uploading, Dawn.
An officer and a gentleman 👍👍👍

I saw this in Theaters in Fall of 1986, while attending Marine Corps Infantry School.....

Alot of Familiar Faces in this Classic Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards - Goose (Revenge of the Nerds, ER), Val Kilmer - Iceman (Tombstone, The Doors, Real Genius, Deja-Vu), Kelly Mcgillis (The Accused, Witness), Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, City of Angels), Tom Skeritt (Alien, TV's Pickett Fences), Michael Ironsides (Starship Troopers), Tim Robbins - Merlin (Shawshank Redeption), Clarance Gilyard - Sundown (Die Hard, TV's Matlock, Walker: Texas Ranger), Rick Rossovich - Slider (Terminator), James Tolkan - Stinger/Commanding Officer (Back to the Future)
The Red Star on the planes symbolized part of the USSR (Solviet Union) Family of Countries....
It was long hinted they were supposed to represent Lybians, there were a few incidents in the 80s.
@@robertsmith4681 Lybia would be a logical option....... But, Just like in Maverick..... I think they kept the country hazy to avoid direct politics.....
MiG is a Soviet military fighter aircraft produced by a design bureau Mikoyan and Gurevich.
So you take the first letter of each M and G.
Word "and" is pronounced "eee" in Russian so English speakers just called it MiG.
The guy sitting behind the pilot in the same plane is known as your Rio {Goose is Maverick's Rio} Rio stand for Radar intercept officer, a category of Naval Flight Officer who was the second crewman in the F-14 Tomcat. Tom Cruise was in several very good and successful movies before this one, but Top Gun was the movie that really made him a household name. Probably the most notable of his early movies would be Taps (1981), The Outsiders (1983), Risky Business (1983), and All the Right Moves (1983).
As for Val Kilmer, my favorite movie with him is called The Saint and it's a movie I think you'd really enjoy.
I back you up on "The Saint". (think I have it on DVD even from back in the day) I will comment up top again and hope she sees it.
These are fighter aircraft, fighter jets, or usually just fighters. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat that Maverick flew was known as a fighter-interceptor, which describes its usual role. Its main job was to defend the fleet from incoming threats like bombers, cruise missiles, or enemy fighters, and in that capacity it was an interceptor--it intercepted and shot down airborne threats. To that end, it was a large fighter that often carried large, long-range missiles (not seen in the movie), and a large, long-range radar. It was also a fighter because it was agile, despite its size, and can "dogfight" or maneuver to shoot down enemy fighters at close range, as well. In general, this kind of aircraft is just called fighter, whatever its main duties might be. And some could perform many roles.
MIG Short for Mikoyan Gurevich The Russian manufacturer of those aircraft. I loved this reaction video. You were kind of stuck on Mavericks father not being dead. Goose dying was part of the 80's formula where the lead character has to overcome the death of someone close to grow into their super hero role. A fun role for Val Kilmer is in a movie called Real Genius. Goose, Anthony Edwards played a nerd in Revenge Of The Nerds. Both are fun movies to watch.
What you see happening on the aircraft carrier, involves Arresting gear and the catapult. Arresting gear stops the planes with the tailhook. The catapult launches the aircraft. FYI, my MOS in the US Marine Corps was very close to this. Expeditionary Airfield Equipment Technician. Our equipment was land-based and used for both emergency landings and also training pilots to use the arresting gear, prior to rotation to a carrier.
Thanks for your service!! My son is a Marine currently stationed in Fort Worth, Texas.
I really do miss those birds flying in and out of Miramar. It is the Marines now, and they have some cool stuff, but seeing Tomcats and Phantoms was awesome! Hopefully Maverick gets a full Best Movie Ever!
24:31 I think the bald guy is the one who played Strickland in Back to the Future.
Back in the 90s I was stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Navy. At that time Top Gun was still held at Coronado across the Bay from S.D. It doesn't matter which Navy Base you go to in that area there is a good chance if there is a TV Top Gun is playing. I've probably seen Top Gun more than 100 times while I was there.
TOPGUN was based out of NAS Miramar until 96, when it was transferred to the Marines and became MCAS Miramar, but they probably utilized Naval Base Coronado as well. In 96, it was moved to NAS Fallon in Nevada.
You may also enjoy Anthony Edwards (Goose) in Revenge of the Nerds. Also has some great songs.
I got an ad at the beginning that started out “Time to retire those contraptions from the 80’s”😂
One of the greatest bare chested men playing sports movies of all time.
I had to look up the fact that Merlin was Tim Robbins.
20:21 what a plot twist if Viper was keeping Maverick's dad in his basement all this time! 😅
😂❤Storyline of Top Gun 3!!?
I thought it was funny that even after hearing the story about how his dad died, she expected the dad to still be alive.
Damn man that scene from Pulp Fiction wiht the gimp came to mind. I will never going to be able to forget this lol
At my brother's (1997) wedding dinner, the glass tinkling task, not the bride-groom kiss, but a 'love' song had to be sung. The ushers, myself included, did 'You've lost that loving feeling.'
The aircraft do have mirrors, mounted inside the canopy framing but they'll have a very limited field of view, it's better to look over the shoulder when dogfighting.
good pilots will constantly be looking around for threats.
Goose was Maverick's RIO (Radar Interceptor Officer).
Check out Goose (Anthony Edwards) in the REVENGE OF THE NERDS franchise and in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH
In this movie the cockpit shots were done in front of a green screen. In Top Gun Maverick, all the actors were in the planes with the cameras. Some of the most beautiful cinematography I have ever seen
He had a family! He had the perfect family! He had the perfect mustache!
Honestly the first time I ever laughed at that scene. You're a gem!
This is the only TRUE TOP GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BLUE ANGELS are the US Navy equivalent of the Red Arrows. Lots of YT videos of them.
Jester and Viper are instructors at the school they play the "bad guys" in the engagement. Both Jester and Viper were in A-6 Skyhawks which were at that time used as adversary aircraft while Maverick and the other students were in the F-14. Another adversary aircraft that is still used today is the F5 which plays the role of the actual enemy aircraft both in the beginning and end of the movie.
Sorry, darlin'. Those people you work with assign you your nicknames. Your name, your job, something you've done, something you've failed at, where you've been, how you make them feel, all candidates for what you receive. One thing for sure is, YOU DON'T get to pick your own. Tom: RISKY BUSINESS, THE FIRM, LEGEND.. Val: THE SAINT, THE DOORS, TOMBSTONE, WILLOW. Kelly: WITNESS. Anthony: REVENGE OF THE NERDS. F-14 Tomcat, sexiest fighter ever: THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. There are more movies for everyone, but you know that. Best since Kelly Mac
Tom cruise actually debuted in the movie “The Outsiders”. The outsiders had a HUGE list of debuts from HUGE stars. You would LOVE it! ❤
He didn't debut in Outsiders. He was in like 3 movies (Endless Love [1981], Taps [1981] & Losin' It [1982]) before even doing that one.
@@acupojo that’s right, him and Matt Dillon were the only ones who weren’t debuting
Google Quentin Tarantino's monologs on how Top Gun is actually about Maverick's struggle with his homosexuality.
Classic! Funniest thing I’ve ever seen 😂😂
The coin and pen trick is called "coin twirling" or "pen twirling". ... also "coin rolling" is another way to say it.
I haven't seen anywhere in the comments the fact that stunt pilot, Art Scholl, lost his life in an accident while filming, and is remembered with a tribute at the end of the credits.
That fighter costing 30 million was in the early '80s. The F-15 EX that is being manufactured is still an old airplane but the base price is 117 million now.
I'm a U.S. Navy Vet, and I worked in Aircraft Launch and Recovery. When the aircraft land anf catch the wire, I maintained and operated the equipment that the wire is attached to, such as a large hydraulic-pneumatic engine--which is what actually stops the aircraft.
The unnamed 'enemy' planes are MiG-28's. In real life, there was no such thing as MiG-28's, the actual planes were F-5's. They're called "MiG" because of their maker, Mikoyan-Gurevich. Currently, Russia used the MiG-35.
Also, $30 Million was in 1986 dollars. Current Navy F-35C planes run about $102.1 Million per plane. The U.S. Navy is planning on getting about 273 of them, so about $1.7 Trillion worth.
My Dad's name was Alfred, but everyone called him "Pete".
"I know I'm not supposed to..."
Actually, yes, you are. As good as Maverick is, Ice calls him out for his cocky and reckless behavior. He's right to do so. That being said, having worked with actual Navy pilots, typically their attitudes are closer to Mav's than Ice's. They're not necessarily jerks, but there's no question about their confidence, and you HAVE to have that to do the job they do. Ice is being a good teammate here though.
MiG, stands for Mikhail and Gurevuch. The leading designers of Soviet fighter aircraft. Their work bearing the acronym
MiG= Mikhail & Gurevuch.
The music is part of what makes the movie great, you also have good hard fast fighter action, there is romance and drama, the loss of Goose which, I think is there, not to upset people in a grand way, but to show that actions have consequences and one needs to take responsability for them, and is part of Maverick's character arc.
Tom Cruise had done Legend plus the ones listed in comments before "Top Gun". Top Gun is a very beloved film with real aurcraft works, just like "The Final Countdown", another fighter film with F-14's.
No cgi back then so everything in this movie is practical effects and masterful filming
This movie came out the summer before my senior year in high school, and I remember so many people got sucked in by this and joined the navy thinking it was going to be flying jets and playing volleyball, only to later find out they would be scrubbing decks and cleaning the bathrooms. best recruiting movie the navy ever had.
They should have watched Officer and a Gentleman. I'm the same age and must say flying jets is very hard to get into, thank God I was told that by real vets at the time.
In the mid-late 1970s, a whole new generation of fighter jets were built for the US armed forces. The Air Force got the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon (a single seat, single engine dogfighter) & the McDonnel-Douglas F-15 Eagle (a single seat, twin engine, air superiority fighter - more missiles). The Navy got the Grumman F-14 Tomcat (a twin engine, 2 seater fighter, with variable sweep wings and the most advanced weapons system available at the time). The price tags went for $13-15 million for each F-16 in the beginning to over $33 million for each F-14. Navy planes were designed for redundancy, 2 engines, 2 crew, etc. and the Phoenix guided missile system onboard could supposedly track and kill 6 moving targets simultaneously. The swiveling wings allowed for wing forward for take-offs, cruising and landing since more surface area was exposed and greater lift was provided at lower speeds. As it F-14 gained altitude and speed, the wings would swivel back to reduce the surface area and reduce drag so it could go fully supersonic when needed.
As a child in the 80's this movie was a huge part of my childhood. Sadly, I did not get to become a fighter pilot. The need for glasses pretty much killed that dream.
Top Gun: Maverick is DEFINITELY worth the watch.
My younger brother got into some intense arguments in the 80s regarding F-14 vs F-15. Using dad's combat aircraft coffee table book for reference. I always preferred the F-15. But the Tomcat is cool looking.
It is a beautiful aircraft but the 15 is much superior. It's significantly more agile, better dogfighter, can pull more Gs for longer. The Tomcat is limited to 6.5G but they often went above that. .
*Sigh* Regarding your question at the 8:47 minute mark, it was literally answered a few seconds before by one of the characters. She is a *CIVILIAN* contractor. People in the Military do not salute civilians....the same way that civilians do not need to salute people in the Military. (CAPS used to denote italics...not 'yelling'). Anyway, the dialogue between the characters contains all the answers to your questions. Remember, most of the movie-watchers have never been in the Military and don't know a thing about flying or fighter jets. But the movie does a good job of explaining these things to movie-watchers via the witty dialogue.
Btw, another great Tom Cruise movie is "Jerry Maguire" (A Rom-Com-Dram from 1996 or 1997). Great movie.
Also, I don't know if you realized that Goose's wife is played by Meg Ryan, who went on to become one of the biggest A-Lister Hollywood stars of the late 1980s/1990s. She starred in Rom-Com blockbusters such as "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), "Sleepless In Seattle" (1993..I think), and "You've Got Mail" (1998).
And yep...back in the 1980s, those fighter jets cost around USD$30 Million each. The money for those planes was forcibly taken from the US taxpayers. TAXATION IS THEFT.
“They’re on a mission…. To find Maverick’s DAD!” I was putting in eye drops and completely missed my face because I started laughing 😂 Thanks I needed that!
Dawn Marie: "It's not like you can fly up there and hold plane hands."
Maverick: "Hold my beer."
£30m in 1985 when the film was shot would be around £85m today after it’s adjusted for inflation. The F22 Raptor is about £250m per plane.
Viper told Mav. "your dad could have made it back, but he stayed in the fight, saving 4 men before he "bought it" (slang for died)" Viper watched Duke go down.
"I Love Goose." "He's a Dad, I Love him even More"... (oh, you sweet summer child...)... :)
In the same year it was in theaters, I had to take a short flight in a small De Havilland Dash-8 out of a regional airport by a lake. I queue up my Walkman while taxiing. When the plain revved up and they let the brakes go, Highway to the Danger Zone started to play and then we were over water and climbing. Nerdy fun only I was experiencing on the flight. :)
The "Code Names" are the Pilot's "Call Signs"... YOU'RE call sign should be "Banshee"!
When they showed the actors in the Cockpits during flights, they were passengers in the back seats and their reactions were real.
Tom Cruise loved it so much that he actually became a pilot and owns several planes.
MIG is short for Mikoyan-Guryevich, a famous Soviet airplaine factory. The counterpart to Lockheed Skunkworks in the United States.
ha ha ha... "we can"t have Tom Cruise fly in a plane with a camera in front if his face", she said!! ❤😂 Epic...
please watch Top Gun Maverick 🙏🏻🤣🤣
The Navy version of the new F-35 costs just over 100 million dollars
