Thanks for that excellent review. As for bird strikes & movies, In 2009, an airliner with 155 people on board, lost both engines shortly after take off. They hit a flock of Canada Geese. Captain Sullenberger felt he had no other choice than to land the aircraft on the Hudson River. He saved everyone and is considered a hero. They used a computer and his son helped with the vocals. Penny Benjamin was the Admiral's daughter Mav went ballistic with in.....was mentioned in Top Gun. Rolling the plane upside down is necessary to achieve maximum response. A simple push down of the nose would fall far short. Rolling, and then when inverted, pulling "up" to achieve a much faster decent, is how that works.

He is right, it is really easy. Compared to a prop plane at least. The flying thing is not the hard part, the plane does it basically for you. The hard part is to learn all the systems, weapons, tactics, navigation etc, and combining all those with the flying to make at an effective weapon platform in stressful situations. Also withstanding the G effects is not easy. But takeoff and landing are usually the most difficult parts during a flight, and its a lot easier in a fighter jet then in a "regular" plane. Landing on a boat is ofc another thing...

If they are just stunned by the crash, the cardboard box will help to keep them safe from cats while the bird recuperates from the shock of hitting the window. Apparently, you can buy various things online that are advertised to be stuck to your window to prevent bird strikes. I think human's ability to make decisions on the spot is what makes a difference in wars.
To illustrate, there is a real life story about a tail gunner in a flying fortress in the Pacific during world war II who ran out of ammo. They were being chased by two Zeros and when it was imminent they would be gunned down, he took some emergency flares, not designed as weapons and shot them at the Zeros. He missed, but the flares got the attention of a WWII legend, Greg "Pappy" Boyington, who saw the desperate attempt, flew to gun down one of the Zeros and chase the other one away. If not by one man's ability to improvise and the other one's ability to see the unusual and react outside of the programmed situation, the flying fortress would have not being able to complete the mission.
Humans might not have the precision and ability of robots, but when it comes to critical moments where decisions make the difference, having the better trained personnel makes the difference between winning or losing a conflict.

The reason why Maverick likes to go upside down as you said is because a pilot can handle about 10 positive g's, pulling up before blacking out, but only about 5 negative g's, pushing down before redding out (to much blood being pushed into the brain). More g's means a tighter turn radius.

Little bit of trivia; the P51 Mustang that Cruise is servicing in the beginning and flying with at the end of the movie is actually his own in real life.
Mach as the measurement of the speed of sound, is pronounced "Mack", and is named from the Austrian physicist Ernst Mach.
And, at Mach 10, you'd go around Earth in about 3 to 4 hours. (It's a bit tricky to convert Mach to km/h or mph as the speed of sound is different at different heights in the atmosphere and depends on air pressure, moisture levels and so on.)

The reason the flip upside-down all the time is because of how wings generate lift. Wings always want to pull the plane "up" relative to where the pilot is sitting, due to the physics of lift. When flying normally, you can climb more quickly than you can descend by pointing down, because when doing the latter, you're fighting against lift. So by inverting the plane, you're "climbing" towards the ground.

19:58 He has good reason to go upside down for maneuvers where he has to go into a sudden, very steep dive towards the earth. If he pushed the nose down that steeply while right side up, he’d be putting a lot of negative Gs on the jet and on himself. What that means is that he and the plane would be experiencing an acceleration force, equivalent to several times the force of earth’s gravity, towards the top of the plane and towards his head, rather than down towards the plane’s bottom and his legs. Pilots black out in normal heavy G forces because the blood has a harder time getting to their brains. The opposite, in negative Gs, is all of his blood wants to rush INTO his brain, which can be extremely hazardous AND can cause him to still pass out. The plane itself is designed and engineered to be able to withstand far more positive Gs than negative, and the frame will suffer damage under significantly less negative Gs than positive Gs. So, he rolls over for a fast dive because it is safer for him and for the plane.
Oh, also he can better see the ground he’s diving towards when he can see it through the whole canopy than trying to peer over the nose of the aircraft.

North Island is a place in San Diego, California (my hometown that I'm writing this from), by the San Diego Bay. It is the home of Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, which is pretty much the birthplace of naval aviation. The "Top Gun" school used to be located at NAS Miramar, also in San Diego, but in real life it moved to NAS Fallon in Nevada some years ago. So the movie pretends that it's at NAS North Island, because NAS Miramar was taken over by the US Marine Corps. I guess the filmmakers wanted to pretend that Top Gun is still in San Diego, near the ocean and the carriers, which are docked at North Island, instead of in the middle of a desert.

Maverick can go so fast because he is a better pilot than they are. He is more skilled at the maneuvers and turns, letting him crank up the speed. This is also of course why he suggested this plan in the first place instead of something else, not to mention the fact that he's doing the job of 3 people in the process. As for why he didn't show them that it was doable in the first place, they trusted that he wouldn't suggest a flight plan that was impossible. He only resorted to stealing a plane and flying the mission when he got grounded and Cyclone was sending the pilots on a literal suicide mission just to get the job done.

My brother and I made mom mad when she was wanting to talk to us when Danger Zone kicked in, and we told her she'd have to wait till the song's over. Making people wonder if the opening is a remaster is a wonderful part of that callback vibe. How do you open a sequel to a great movie, decades after the original? Do a modern remake of the same opening. Hook in all of the fans, and attract new fans with what hooked in fans back in the day.
Lockheed actually designed and built the Darkstar prop, as if they were honestly building something for mach 10 capability. Enough people suspect that it's close enough to Lockheed's SR-73 drone (which is a successor to their famous SR-71, and has a goal of similar speeds to the Darkstar), that China actually redirected one of their spy satellites to get images of it.
The Navy gave the director and crew much more access than they had on the original Top Gun, given that Top Gun is seen as a very pro-Navy movie.
The card was not declined. She didn't actually run it. She's messing with him. Also, Penny is the admiral's daughter mentioned at the beginning of the first Top Gun. Fighters can maneuver so fast and hard because they have a lot of control power in their flaps and such, relative to their size and weight. The Super Hornet in this case can't turn the hardest of all fighters, but it does roll very, very fast, using the tail fins, which are all-moving (common among supersonic fighters), and the ailerons (outboard flaps at the back of the wings).

For combat, "DCS World" is probably one of the more prevalent Flight simulators that includes and focuses on air combat, as far as official modules, I don't think they have the Super Hornet available, but they do have the F/A-18C Hornet available, which is from the same era as the first film and is the older version of fighters flown in this film. I think my favorite line about this movie came from a test pilot I know who’s flown both the F/A-18 and the F-35. He said that the movie couldn’t use the F-35 because if they had, the movie would have been boring.
32:53 unfortunately, that’s part of flying. Pilots, airfields, and flying organizations do what they can to avoid bird strikes, but the birds don’t understand where they shouldn’t be and the aircraft fly too fast to be able to avoid them. 20 years ago, an F-22 hit a loon near Dobbins AFB in Atlanta. Most of the bird wound up in the exhaust nozzle. I was there working a different program as they took the nozzle apart to clean it and the smell was horrendous. It didn’t help that someone brought in a KFC bucket and put it next to the nozzle as a joke.
36:14 ultimately, war has always and will always come down to logistics. Even if war becomes robots killing robots (which I doubt will ever happen for many reasons) whichever nation is able to build the most efficient logistics network will win in the end.

Doing this meant the actors had to film their scenes in the cockpit. 15:04 Tom Cruise fought for Kilmer to get a role in this movie.

Sometimes you have to go upside-down, because generally aircraft turn upward, relative to their airframes. So if you need to go downward really fast (slow is different), then you'd turn upside-down and pitch "upward". One of the reasons is g forces, and planes are designed to take greater turning force in this direction, and pilots can also withstand them much better than the other way (with blood rushing to their heads under pressure--ouch!). Another reason is that upward visibility is far greater, and it's good to be able to see where you're going.
