The reason Rooster played on the piano was to get back at Hangman. The jukebox was playing and Hangman said ‘i love this song’ so Rooster unplugged the jukebox, but the place was full so he started playing the piano to give him a reason to do so and also kind of take the lead in the bar - it was basically the culmination of a pissing contest between Rooster and Hangman, and obviously being a navy bar he would probably make the association with his memory of his dad playing that.

Hangman is such a gem of a character. You’re tricked into hating him because he’s so cocky but that’s just what Top Gun brings out of young pilots, even Maverick. And the points he makes about Rooster aren’t wrong: Rooster isn’t fast enough or level-headed enough for this mission. He’s like a megaphone for all the practical reasons Maverick should not choose Rooster.
Once the mission starts however, he’s supportive, professional, and eager to help. I love that. Best arc of the movie.

No sequel to a movie that is over 30 years old should be this damn spectacular! I saw this opening night in IMAX and it was one of the absolute best moviegoing experiences of my life. The sound of the jets flying by, the literal feeling of the vibrations in your seat when the G forces kick in, and especially the visuals of seeing everything from the point of view of the pilots. I legitimately believed during the final dogfight that Maverick was going to die, so few movies today make me believe that!
On top of all that, the story is so freaking amazing. The theme of showing how fighter pilots are still needed even in the age of drones, the story of Rooster learning to not just forgive Maverick (not for his father’s death but pulling his papers) but to let go of being so overly careful in his flying and “don’t think just fly”. And of course the most emotionally powerful in the movie when Maverick visits Iceman. Even though he has retired due to his throat cancer and has difficulty speaking he still managed to give an absolutely heartbreaking performance.😭😭😭😭

The Maverick and Iceman scene proved that despite being rivals in the past. Iceman always had his back after Goose dead. Iceman was Maverick's wingman outside of a plane and even in his last breath was drawn Iceman always had Maverick's back later in life.
Also, one thing I love about this film. They succeed to make new characters interesting in just one movie. Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix and Payback are some of the best newcomers in this film. Hangman remind me of Iceman and his rivalry between Rooster remind of the rivalry between Iceman and Maverick. This is notalgia done right.

11:50 if you think about it, his last memory of his dad was sitting on top of a piano while Goose played the song, so he has a connection with it. Fun fact about this scene: Miles Teller learned to play the song, this was a live take that was so good they included it on the OST, and they edited the performance into a music video, meaning Miles Teller has an officially credited cover.
24:51 I suspect Amelia already knew Maverick was there, his bike was parked outside the front door.
I like how throughout the movie they foreshadowed Maverick potentially dying…
“Despite your best efforts, you refuse to die.”
“Someone’s not coming back from this.”
“You’ll be back in a fighter jet with your tail on fire.”
“I’m never gonna leave you again.”
    “Don’t break her heart again.”
“We’ll talk, when we get back.”
“If I don’t see you again Hondo, thank you.”
But then he survived. Which means Maverick completed his mission of not losing anyone:
“Every mission has its risks, these pilots accept that.”
    “I don’t, sir.”
He was prepared to sacrifice himself to make sure everyone else made it back… but him coming back too is the icing on the cake.

Great Balls of Fire was essential for the storyline, because it shows us that Rooster has hung on to the good times with his dad and has made them good times for himself going forward as well as showing that Mav is still completely haunted by the loss. Penny's reaction to seeing him standing outside hurting as he relives that moment in his mind shows that she knows and understands him because she is aware of the trauma. That helps show that they've had a real relationship history beyond the throwaway line at the start of the original movie about him and the admiral's daughter. And Amelia's line at the window is a gut kick for Mav and the viewers. She knows he's hurt her mother, and while she's willing to give him a chance, she wants him to know in no uncertain terms how she feels.
Hangman is Maverick. Mav wasn't that bad, but that's because Maverick was trained and flew in the era when fighters were almost always two seaters, so Mav always had to be mindful of his RIO, his only remaining family, in the back seat. He occasionally slipped up and took too many risks that Goose, as his conscience, couldn't hold him back from, but he always felt responsible for Goose so he never went completely off the chain.
Hangman is Maverick without Goose's steadying influence. He's flown single seat fighters for probably his entire career, so all he's risking is himself which with his supreme self-confidence means he can do anything and survive it and it is up to his inferiors to keep up. If they don't, then it is their fault. It's nice that he grows to understand better the value of teamwork and to be a better team player, much like Maverick did with the "I'm not leaving my wingman" line at the end fight of the first movie. Seeing Hangman react with real concern for the strike team as he listened to the radio chatter was a great sign of his character development.
The actor who played Hangman tested for Rooster and lost out, but he impressed Cruise and the others so much that they expanded Hangman's role in the script for him. He was a supreme ass, but he did come in clutch at the end.
In one draft Hangman was going to be Iceman's son, but that would have been awful so I'm glad it got tossed.

One small correction: 2 seat fighters weren't really the standard, the F14 was just a 2 seater. There were still things like the F16, F15, F/A-18A Legacy Hornet, and plenty of other single seaters. But Hangman is and probably always was a single seat Super Hornet pilot, whereas Maverick, being an F14 pilot, always had a RIO

Hangman is Iceman, not Maverick. I'm surprised you didn't pick up on Hangman's Ice to Rooster's Maverick. If you watch them back to back, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Literally the old generation teaching the new generation.

    • @thatpatrickguy3446
      @thatpatrickguy3446 Před měsícem

@@cvonantz I can respectfully agree to disagree with you on this. There's not really an Iceman in the young pilots, and Hangman's selfishness seems to perfectly parallel Maverick's actions when he doesn't listen to Goose in the first movie. There's even a line about it from Mav along the lines of, "Leaving your wingman? Haven't seen that for a while."
Ice was always focused on being very calm, cool, and controlled. He did everything textbook and as close to perfect as he could. Hangman is nothing like that. He's a wild stick jockey who just is out to prove he's better than everyone else, no matter who he pisses off, which also sounds like a younger Maverick.
To your point I will absolutely agree that there are obvious similarities between Rooster and Mav. Both are basically orphans whose father died in a fighter and whose mother died after that. Mav feels a lot for Rooster's situation but Rooster is angry at Mav while Mav was just frustrated at not knowing what really happened to his dad. Rooster is overcautious while Mav was reckless, and the only time Rooster is reckless is when he's flying against the man he's so angry at in training, or when he's trying to save him on the mission.
It is a great movie about the old teaching the young and the growth of both old and young through that process. I've watched them back to back and unfortunately I wish I hadn't since the new movie makes the older movie pale in comparison in some ways. Don't get me wrong, I still like them both, but I just think the second is much better.
Then again that may be because I'm not the teen I was when the first came out but have somehow survived to be an old guy, and the second would appeal more to old me than teen me. 😀

    @TalkingHands308 Před rokem +70

In the beginning when you see him running on the treadmill, it's actually not just an excuse to show him exercising. I actually love that they put that in there. What it is, is when pilots have to fly at really high altitudes, like U2 pilots and test pilots for experimental aircraft like this one, they have to deal with a very thin atmosphere The suit he wears is somewhat pressurized but it can't be fully pressurized or it'll be like an inflated balloon up in the thin atmosphere and would be hard to move. And when you're in thin atmosphere like that you run the risk of the nitrogen in your blood boiling and turning into gas form. So prior to any high altitude flights, the pilots would breathe pure oxygen for like the hour or more prior and they would often exercise while doing it to get more oxygen absorbed and more nitrogen released out of their system. So that scene of him running with the oxygen mask on is actually a realistic touch. Also when you see him climbing into the cockpit of that aircraft you see one of the crew set down a box that his suit was attached to, that's an air conditioning unit to pump cooled oxygen into the suit because it's really hot inside that suit, another realistic touch. And that experimental craft, they could have just invented some thing out of thin air but they actually hired real engineers and designers from Lockheed Martin to design something that would at least be plausible for what it's supposed to be. I hate when I watch a movie and the aircraft design just doesn't make any sense and anyone at all familiar with how aircrafts work would take one look at it and be like "that won't fly..." They made sure to do their homework here. I wouldn't be at all surprised if an aircraft of that design really could do some impressive flying, lol. Maybe not mach 10, but still, haha.

In the moment, time slows down but you are hyper-focused on your target, you really don’t know how much time has passed. Just like Viper in the original, Warlock and Hondo are the coolest characters! I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Rooster…perfect casting! And, bird strikes are real…I’ve had many…when Rooster said you have no wife, no kids, nobody to mourn you when you burn in it hit home…I’m not married and have no kids…

In the original Top Gun movie Kenny Loggins was invited to a screening and asked to write a song. He and his writing partner thought everyone everyone would try to write the title song so they elected to write the song for the volleyball scene, Playing With The Boys. Then he got a request for help with Danger Zone and now we have one of the most iconic songs in film history.

There are MANY Easter Eggs in this film.
    1. The P-51 (WW2 plane) shown at end is Tom Cruise’s plane.
    2. The plane they steal is an F-14, the planes used 36 years ago for original film.
    3. Having Rooster in Back seat of the F-14, is same position as his Dad (Goose).
    4. Tony Scott, original director died in 2012. Some small touches are tributes to him.
    5. Don Simpson, original co-Producer, died in 1996 - BUT Bruckheimer & Cruise left him on credits.
    6. Actors (F-18 pilots) had choice of Callsigns, Myles Teller chose “Rooster” (he talks about it).
    7. US Navy had to approve placement of new Small 4K cameras in cockpit & on planes.
    8. “Penny Benjamin” (admiral’s daughter) is referenced in first movie by Goose.
    9. Tom Cruise insisted that Val Kilmer (Iceman) be included in film story.
    10. Cruise & Bruckheimer Held Back the release of this movie for 2 years (due to COVID), finished 3 years earlier.
    11. For film opening, Kenny Loggins recorded in full 4K Dolby audio -
ironically they decided the original 1986 was better - with some minor clean-up.

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in real life. Friends (no not really, but they are not enemies either). Very different people. They had a somewhat friendly rivalry going on when they were filming the first movie together on Miramar and the Enterprise/Ranger interior.
Anthony Edwards, and Meg Ryan were the 2 coolest and humblest actors back then. They walked around and talked to everyone and refused to sign autographs because they would tell you that they were playing side parts and that they were just actors not stars.
The bar where they did the piano scene was 3 blocks away from my apartment. It was closed for 3 days when they filmed that scene.
The Motorcycle was an enlisted mans bike that they bought from him. The black Porche that Kelly Macgillis drove was my commanding officers car. He had 3 of them A black one, a white one and a red one. They were going to use the red one but she liked the black one.
They put a plaque in it and he auctioned it after the movie was shown later that year.
Anyway I can't speak to much about Mr. Cruise. He has been in some great movies but he had an entourage of about 20 people around him when they filmed the first Top Gun and personally I never got star struck even when I had the chance to meet the few famous and or super actors in my life. I talked with the real Pappy Boyington at an airshow on Miramar, and that was a treat.
I also got to sit in his F4U Corsair, even though it wasn't the one he flew in WW2. It was his to show off at the shows.
I am sorry that I verged off the question. Out of the 2 of them I always liked Val Kilmer for the Mark Twain effort that he was bringing to life. Its a damn shame about his throat cancer.
I'll stop now. AD3 Eldan Fales USN. 1983-1987. Sgt US Army 1987-1999.

There was only one Blue Angel pilot that flew in the movie and he did the really low level stuff like the Darkstar takeoff and Maverick's solo run. All of the other flying was done by fleet pilots in the Navy, not Blue Angel pilots. As for the Navy turning down requests from Cruise, not entirely accurate. He of all people understood what the Navy could and couldn't do, but both parties worked together to make the best flying scenes while keeping safety first.

Hes also licensed to operate several jet aircraft, including the F-18, and is certified to launch and land on carriers. The scene where he launches is ACTUALLY footage of him taking off from the carrier.
