If you remember in the first movie, they said "Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!" Goose asked "Penny Benjamin?' Jennifer Connelly plays Penny Benjamin in this movie.

Honestly I think Maverick having a love story makes a lot of sense. Jennifer Connelly's character and plot line were actually essential to the movie. #1, part of this movie's story for Maverick, besides the whole Goose's son plot, is him realizing he can't fly forever... as the Iceman says to him "It's time to let go.". The idea of a life outside of the cockpit, and the Navy, where he settles down with Jennifer Connelly makes it easier for us to root for than the idea of him retiring and just sitting around lonely as shit because he has no family/friends due to his entire life being about flying. #2, without her, all Tom's character is surrounded by is superiors who don't like him, or subordinates he is training. Connelly lets us see the human sides of Maverick, and lets Tom charm it up a bit. Without her we'd just have scenes of superiors or Rooster yelling at Maverick, or Maverick making the rookies look like little bitches in the air... thats it.

The moment that really sold me on Penny was when Maverick was thrown out the bar, he hears Rooster doing "Great Balls Of Fire" and he (Mav) has the flashback of Goose, there's a moment where Penny looks at Mav and she realizes what's happening, she takes notice. Jennifer Connely as "Penny Benjamin" is one of the biggest reminiscent factors of this movie. From the original, about 14 minutes in, Maverick and Goose are getting their asses chewed for not landing the plane to help their wingman Cougar. The Commander said "you've been busted five time, and put in hack by me, for high speed passes over five air control towers, and one Admiral's daughter." Goose then looks at Mav and whispers, "Penny Benjamin?" She was an interest of his from the original, and I thought it was interesting and cool to see how they reincorporated her character. I get the impression that Rooster is well known for performing that, probably going way back to his time at the academy. The way Phoenix looks when he sits down at the piano... she knows what's up. That's his thing. Everyone knows that song because everyone knows Rooster plays it whenever there's a piano laying around.

To me the love story shows the progression of Pete Mitchell to me. He wasn’t Maverick to her like he was to Charlie. He was Pete, the man not just the pilot. The love scene was romantic and mature love and adoration not the lustful sex scene in the original. Even forgetting that Penny was referenced in the first film, the more adult version of the relationship also plays on the theme of aging and finding your place.

The story between Maverick and Penny is the most practical thing in the movie for me...people like Maverick sometimes don't realize how much they need people and that's what Penny is to Maverick. Someone that, despite leaving behind over the years, has always been in his thoughts. Maverick is also incredibly skilled in the air and lucky. His character lives on breaking rules and getting bailed out of trouble. Penny is the only person who never bails him out. She makes him face his troubles head on.

“Doesn’t age, he’s like a vampire”…as a matter of fact, yes…yes, he is (1994 Interview With A Vampire) 😅….I think Penny Benjamin was a good add on to this movie since Goose mentioned her in the first along with Meg Ryan. Your emotional reaction to the nostalgia, the story, and the realness shows just how freaking great this movie is. I praise them for how they incorporated Val Kilmer. Overall, this is one of the BEST sequels I’ve ever seen 😎…Oh, I appreciate the Star Wars references, lol

The love story was finally a 'full circle' for Maverick - something to reward his original character and all of the losses and compromises that he made to be who he was. An opportunity to re-find a soul-mate that he can now embrace and be part of. I'm pleased with the circular karmic perfection offered by that part of the story. Rooster's "hate" of Mav is a reaction of a child to his father being "killed" by the ego of an exceptional pilot/flight partner along with the paternalistic behaviour that results in the delay of a career. Fitting. In terms of the music, I know so many kids who have embraced 'old' music because modern music just doesn't touch one's soul....if the parents are able to expose their kids to the 'old' music classics, they often can't help but appreciate that music. Happy that you loved the movie. Unlike so many sequels, this really brought things home. Formulaic. Truly American. Still, so very satisfying.

Penny Benjamin was mentioned twice in the original '86 flick by Goose & MegRyan as one of Mav's love fling who happens to be a daughter of a admiral which Maverick found himself in hotwater for, so that character & love interest wasn't just a random put together & made sense since years after as they mentioned during this sequel kept appearing in eachothers life.

Tom’s plane is a Mustang but not a fighter variant (FP-51K). It’s actually a reconnaissance variant (F-6K Mustang) that was flown by the Civil Air Patrol in the US during WWII.
Tom bought the plane and had it retrofitted to look like the fighter variant. This required removing the 2 camera pods and replacing fairings, adding the correct gun mounts and replacing the prop with one having the correct amount of blades for the fighter variant among other changes.
The entire history of his plane is in public records. It’s a beautiful restoration, no doubt, and I’m sure it probably performs well.

If you think about it, Hangman is very similar to Maverick in the first movie! His ego is high; he's willing to sacrifice his wingman during training; heck, even the regret with Maverick's introduction to the team mirrors Maverick's when Charlie appeared before the TG class. He doesn't have that personal tragedy occur, but he is also given the position of Dagger-Spare, just like how Maverick was backup for Iceman and Hollywood in the final dogfight! The similarities are pretty under the radar, but still writing it that way was very clever nonetheless! 🤌🤌🤌

Enjoyed this reaction. Val’s voice was CGI mixed with old audio of his mixed with his son’s voice to make it almost identical to his actual at the time of filming.
That P-51 Mustang WWII fighter is Tom Cruise’s personally owned and maintained aircraft valued around $2M. He had his mechanics license as well, among the dozen other pilot’s licenses and certifications he’s earned.
First movie was too involved in the love story with Charlie, but it was the 80s lol. But this one with Penny was beautifully done and didn’t overwhelm the mission storyline. Had more comedy to offset some of the more serious, sad and intense moments.
There is nobody, no other A-list actor/actress that could elevate these movies as Tom has, as an actual recruiting tool for the Navy. I never clap/cheer in theaters. However this one had the entire audience doing just that…a true love letter to aviation. It’s sad knowing that this will be the last one to be this involved inside actual jets and as near more unmanned aircraft and more stealth that requires secrecy. WELL DONE!

When the wings are swept back, the jet is fast, when they are swept out it is more manuverable, as well as able to take off with less distance.
