The movie is actually a tragic story about all the things Halliday regretted about his life.
The 3 challenges are life lessons. Things he wished he had done differently and things that the person who finds his Easter Egg should learn along the way.
The race that's so hard no one ever finishes symbolizes life. The way to find the Easter Egg, the shortcut, is a metaphor for 'hindsight is 20/20'.
The Hotel and Dance with Kira is about his fear of relationships and taking the chances even if you're afraid.
The video game challenge is about appreciating the gifts others have left for you. It's also about not rushing through life without enjoying it. It's not about winning it's about playing.
And the final challenge is a test to prove that you cherish your friends and those closest to you.
All lessons Wade learned in the end. Which is why Halliday gifted him the Egg.

I actually just re-watched this last week because it's a fun "whenever" movie. I originally saw it in theaters after being extremely hyped up. I read the book and...yes, books are almost always better, but that's because of the added detail they can add. For a book/movie adaptation this movie did a phenomenal overall job. It has some slight flaws -- some of the characters are a bit hollow and not fully fleshed out, but this movie is more about the world than the actual characters. It's a movie about finding an Easter Egg that involves countless Easter Eggs. What's not to love??

Fun fact, there is a planet in the Oasis that is nothing but schools. It is a starting point and it is free for everyone. Hallidayade sure education was available for everyone. Just one example of a small detail that adds more to the overall heartwarming story 😊

Ready player one was based on a book by Ernest Cline. Steven Spielberg read the book and made this movie because he could see this becoming our future, but also used it as a sandbox to drop all his past movie references in like Jurassic park, King Kong, etc. But the interesting thing is since the success of ready player one, Cline wrote a sequel “ready player Two”. I read it, it’s so much bigger than the first one and I’m very much hoping it gets made into a film. Hell I studied film at uni, I’ll help make it if Steven asks.

In regards to the OASIS happening, it is possible. In fact, it’s because of the book of Ready Player One that inspired Palmer Lucky to create his first HMD, which in turn lead to the creation of Oculus. The OASIS is also possible because it’s a metaverse (which you’ve probably heard a lot about). Ernest Cline, the author of the book, was inspired by Second Life (which is a real life metaverse that’s existed since 2003 and was itself inspired by the Metaverse in the novel Snow Crash).
Also the Rosebud that Wade references is a reference to Citizen Kane, which has been referenced in may works, including The Sims.
Also the release handle being inside of the pod makes sense. If the building lost power or there was a fire, they’d want to make sure that those who are in their debtor’s prison are able to get out.
Also, the Willy Wonka-ness of the story is intentional. Ernest Cline stated that the original novel of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory had influence on him, and Cline imagined the Egg Hunt as “What of Willy Wonka was a game programmer and his Golden Ticket contest was inside of his greatest game?” In fact, Gene Wilder, who played Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was approached to play the adult Halliday, but Wilder was retired from acting at the time he was offered the role. In fact, for trailers for the film, they used a rendering of the song “Pure Imagination”.

2:16 The boy wasn't just trying to tell his mom to get off the couch. The food on the stove had caught fire. 🔥

I saw this in the theater and even though I don't consider myself a gamer, I absolutely loved it! I love all of the music and pop culture references. I thought they did a fantastic job! 👏

The "evil music" is actually the intro for Godzilla's appearance in the early movies so it's fitting for it to be used to signal Mecha Godzilla arrival.

As someone who read the book, I can say the movie did it justice. It’s one of my favorite series just from the sheer amount of references in both the book and movie. You could come back to both of them multiple times and never come close to finding all the references!! Ernest Cline is an absolute master of the literary field and Steven Spielberg knew exactly how to implement his ideas to film!!
