The Despacho Thing NEED TO KNOW When Cruising the Dominican Republic

  • When you leave a port of entry in the Dominican Republic you need to acquire a "Despacho" from the Navy and declare your next port of entry. You have to leave as soon as you acquire this despacho and it is only between the hours of 6am and 6pm. You are able to stop at anchorages between your current port and your next port of entry but only to rest or wait for weather and you can expect a visit from the local commodore if you do stop. It is advised not to make a scene if you stop and you are not suppose to get off the boat either. Hope this helps :-)

    It's a bribe and they play it like some official visit, you can play the "me gringo don't understand" and most will go away but some are really delinquents and can take it very far. A friend of mine is a capt in a large motoryacht and the "officer" demanded cash or he was going to "search" the yacht for drugs (ie tear apart upholstery), the capt called the owner who in turn called the embassy and had them off the yacht. They know what to look for so if you are in a small simple vessel don't worry much but if you are running a flashy boat and gear they can be persistent.

    A very interesting piece of information. Loved Sierra suddenly coming to stop to think what she should or should not say I would have been a loss for the proper words as well. Aloha

    Great informative video on cruising in the DR -thanks.
    Having traveled, in some cultures a small gift(bribe of $5 to 10 ) to local, poorly funded official is kind of is seen as a cost to enjoying a beautiful area.
    Positive spin.

    Despacho?
    You can't leave between 6 - 6:15 p.m. prior to the vernal equinox up until the harvest moon.
    Then you can leave when the hen lays 4 eggs except if they're brown, in that case you just have to stay another day.
    I guess I have a lot to learn? Thank you for the DR rules of departure and arrivals via ⛵.
    I'm definitely edumacated!

    Thanks! Great info. I think DR would get a lot more cruisers if they were not such a pain in this regard. Maybe they don’t want more, but you’d think they’d want the extra revenue. They could learn a lot from the Bahamas, I think.

    Thanks for the helpful (and interesting) information. It will be a while before I end up in the DR (live in Pac NW) but, it is good info nonetheless.

    It probably sucks to feel like your being taken advantage of but to a lot of us from the free world it really isn't that big of a deal to toss em a few bucks. Interesting that they'll accept rum as payment, in my opinion a good host offers a drink when a guest comes aboard, bribe or not lol

    I was 7 years old btw, for me and my brothers to come to the USA was about 30,000 thousand dollars, that's soo unfair but we dont complain we just man up and pay, its not even fare for you guys to go to the Dominican republic for free

      We did not come to the DR for free. We paid upon our initial check-in. The point of the video is to describe the way that the "Despacho" works and the cost and complexities of sailing from port to port. I am happy to pay an entry fee into a foreign country.

    • @KevinRodriguez-ev1ss
      @KevinRodriguez-ev1ss Před 3 lety

      Ok , but what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't be complaining for paying that little money to go to the Dominican republic when dominicans can't just buy a boat and sail to the USA , Dominicans have to pay around 7000 grand each and wait for 4 years for a yes or no, it's not fair , what if the Dominican republic wanted 7,000 for each one of you and you have to play the waiting game. , you guys just made a video complaining...

    If the government of the DR wants to make it that difficult to visit & spend my money in their country, I'll just give it a miss. Plenty of other countries to see & go to that are more welcoming.

    That bribery and coercion to give money happens a lot, specially by officials. The thing is, we know what it is, and it feels wrong.

    great vid guys. I need some advise please, if you are able. I got a lift to the D.R. in a sailing yacht in april during the pandemic. we arrived at Bocca Chica, Zar par marina. immigration checked our passports but did not stamp them, i am now trying to get onto another sailing yacht to travel on, which is in a different marina. Do you think that if i get onto another boat to leave the country from a different marina, that there will be a problem with the fact that i do not have a stamp into the country? thanks in advance. take care . Donna

    Is this because of COVID-19 or in general? When you are in a marina, can you take your dinghy to explore a beach or go surfing? This stupid rule makes it pretty much impossible to explore the country from the sea.

    • @TulasTechTalk
      @TulasTechTalk  Před 4 lety

      In general. I do think you have the freedom to explore by dinghy though. This is for the main vessel.
