  • This Video is in response to requests by our subscribers asking for a direct comparison between the G25, GTW3476, G30 and GTX3582R Gen2 turbochargers - This is a little more in depth than a simple comparison - anyways the video covers compressor maps and the formula used to plot them. I tried to keep this simple as possible without using too many formula references etc. Enjoy -

    Hi, I’ve been binging your videos over the last 4-5 months and just want to say thanks for all these informative videos.
    In hindsight I wish I spent more time learning about larger turbos and the differences precision, borg, Garrett, etc offer before
    I made my selection. I was on a time crunch so I kept to my original plan and went with the g30-770 but I now know what I want for my end goal once I have a built forged motor.
    Thanks again!! Looking forward to future uploads :)

I seen some videos where they seem to spool up really fast on MK6's and I have an MK7 thats being built to go as fats as I can. What is ur opinion? I do street the car. a lot tho but 90% hi way .

      @@TENNESSEETRACKHAWK From experience, the EFR7163 spools faster than the G30-series and costs less money. Its a better cooled turbo aswell as more reliable. The Water ports and aluminium bearing housing are a winner! The Gamma TI turbine wheel is extremely light weight and you'll definitely see the benefit.

    Absolutely great video, you're the first one I see who really goes into the details of compressor maps and how to plot your engine to it. 👍🏻
    I would have a question, seeking for your thinking on the topic.
    I run the good old Audi 5 cylinder engine. 2.2 liter.
    Currently, I'm running a GTW3476R on it. Basically the ball bearing variant of the GTW you cover in this video.
    I'm reving to 7.800 rpm at 2.26 bar of boost (gauge boost). I'm actually ending up at 673 HP at the crank.
    As you also nicely said, the GTW is not the best spooling and responsive turbo. Hence I was looking for an alternative. I'm fully fine with loosing a couple of horses as a tradeoff for better spool and response.
    Let's say we want to stay right around that 600hp mark, would you go for a G30/G25 - 660, capping out at maybe 550hp, but have better spool, or would you rather tend to the G30-770, which should be capable of 600 horses, but having bit slower spool?
    Or would you even say the G30-660 might be capable of 600 horses and still maintain and survive that boost pressure all the way up the rpm range I'm going, without falling off at the top end?
    Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      @TurboDirectSA  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the comment, glad you are enjoying the content. The G-series turbos will underperform alot worse than the GTW you currently using. There are alternatives to the G-series turbos which are ball bearing and cost less, yet make the claimed power. I would look immediately toward the EFR8370 which will outspool the GTW, and G30, and make the claimed power without a doubt. This is essentially a 750HP advertised unit, BUT the map shows closer to 800HP capacity.

      @@TurboDirectSA Thanks for the info! So far, I was shy of using an EFR turbo because most of the turbine housing setups are internally wastegated, and I wasn't sure how well that's going to perform, boost control wise, and from reliability aspects.

      @@TurboDirectSA Just to let you know, based on your great advice and help, I now got an EFR8370 for my 5 banger. @@TurboDirectSAit's been awhile, but I still owe you feedback on your turbo recommendation.
      In short: the EFR8370 is an awesome turbo for this engine! Just as you proposed.
      Compared to the previous setup - using the GTW3476R - the boost threshold is about 350 rpms earlier, although the dimensions of the turbine housing and the EFR turbine wheel are way bigger. I was speechless when seeing this!
      Also, engine response is way better.
      I still run the EFR compressor housing, with the built in recirculation vavle. I just replaced the original BW valve with the turbosmart drop in replacement, which is just way stronger and can sustain higher boost pressures better. With this, spool up and response, especially at gear changes, are crazy. There simply is no noticeable boost lag, although I'm not -yet- running shift cut.
      Also, a positive side effect due to this hybrid turbo combining the turbine wheel of the 7670 and the big compressor wheel of the 8374, this turbo is just capable of insane power output at way lower boost pressures.
      Again, compared to the previous setup with the GTW, I'm running the same power, but at 0.26 bar less boost. Actually, it's even better. I'm hitting 705hp now with only 2.0bar of boost. Previously 670hp with 2.26bar. (yes, conditions at the Dyno runs have been almost identical).
      So, once again, I can only say a BIG thanks for your help and recommendation on my turbo setup. It fulfilled everything I was hoping for, and more!
      I hope you continue to gain more attention with your work, you more than deserve it! Cheers from Germany

    Hello @TurboDirectSA, I've been watching your videos to learn about turbos. I've learned quite s bit however I am still unsure in choosing turbo. I have M54B30 and so far I choose G30-660 with .83A/R. Would that be a wise choice? I will be keeping stock intake manifold with DISA so engine should be quite efficient in low rpm range. I will use it for street driving with around 450HP.

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  Před měsícem

      Thanks for the comment - to be honest if this was my car, would consider the BorgWarner EFR8370 - this turbo will outspool, and far outperform the G-series Garrett. Over time the G-series has disappointed many tuners, and is overrated. The EFR Gamma-TI turbine wheels are unmatched in spool, linear response and overall performance. The 8370 will produce more power earlier and for longer in the RPM range and make for a very street-able setup, with much better reliability at less cost.

    On the K20c1 2.0 lit motor for the fk8 Type R at 10:1 compression, port and polished head which removed the fuel tumbling giving it 300cfm of flow is the G30-770 a good turbo for the street? Stock cams for now. This is run on a 4 port boost solenoid with a 7lb wg spring. Whats the max boost pressure it can achieve? 40, 45 psi? My goal is 700 to the ground. The k20c1 has no individual exhaust ports, basically one port with the turbine housing almost directly on the headifold. I would suspect this would aide in turbo transient response. What are your thoughts? Good street, circuit turbo, drag turbo or all of the above?

    Im guessing a gen 2 gtx3582r will spool slower than a gt3582r given that the gtx has a 66/82 billet compressor wheel vs 62/82 cast wheel in the gt3582r. Do you know how many rpms slower the gtx gets full boost of 20-22psi? Thanks

      Keep in mind that yes the compressor might weight more and have a larger diameter, BUT its more efficient than the cast 6 blade splitter, so flow low down is improved, which will provide additional air flow low down, elliminating the lag.

    Hi, what turbo will work the best for a 2.0 20v stroker... between 3700-7500RPMS peak boost atleast 650hp its for street racing and drag racing 1/4mile. Thanks in advance

    • @TurboDirectSA
      @TurboDirectSA  Před 2 lety +2

      Eduan the turbochargers that make this power will begin to boost over 3000RPM on the 20V stroker, but at that power the boost pressure required will be high, and full boost (wastegate open) will more than likely occur above 4000RPM. The EFR7670 will produce the 650HP and on that engine you will see this power at the wheels or very close to it.
      The EFR7163 will spool much faster and probably save you around 500RPM, but will max out at around 550WHP.
