This legit answered so many questions I've had for years about JZ flow and turbo sizing. Appreciate you guys for getting into the nitty gritty here!!
Will the results be somewhat the same for RB26’s?
@@hellghost1410 completely different motor, timing control is completely different, cam setup, etc…. So no.
@@hellghost1410have A watch of motive video they had a g35 1050 video for the RB
@@leighmanton7298 thanks mate yeah I already had a look and went for almost a 1:1 of their build
@@hellghost1410 nice one 👍🏼 what size ar did you get for the g35? Is it on boost before 5k?
The 0.83 Ar housing should have been tested on G35. That is the sweet spot
That’s what my g35-900 turbo has a 0.83 Ar housing 😎
Amazing job. Love the content. Nice to have creators that speak to those that enjoy more of the nuances of performance and engineering. You did a good job making it more in depth without being overwhelming. The community needs more of this.
I’m seriously amazed how nicely you guys went through all of the data. Thank you for making it so easy to understand and for going to all that trouble just to help educate your audience. What an amazing episode!
This must be one of the most informative videos on the channel. Thanks for doing the research, guys. I'm sure it will save lots of people the hassle of guessing what setup will work best for their needs, with there being as many opinions as people out there. Your findings also seem to confirm the big mystery of the small compressor housing not working as expected on my S13's GT2871R.
So cool seeing you guys work with Franz! Absolute top notch tuner and he makes some really amazing wiring harnesses. I met him back in the day when he worked with the DSG(Dent Sport Garage) guys and it's so great watching him get this kind of recognition.
Great vid!
I love that sound of the turbo spooling up and that deep whistle, combined with that awesome straight six sound. 10/10!
30 minutes of pure gold.
Guys, you have here, in your channel everything we need to learn, listen and share. The data followed by feedback is the most precious we human beings can have, numbers without knowledge are useless and this transcends in all professions, hobbies and little things in life even!.
I'm looking forward upgrade my S3 8P as well and i want to maintain as much as possible the throttle response and this video is a HUGE guide to what should i look into it.
For a street car, I'd be setting that G30 on the 1.01 housing - and then mapping in boost by gear, letting it rip in 4/5/6 and reigning it in for 1/2/3.
Would make an awesome street car.
true
Yeah, but Supras long ratio's you'll find that full boost by 3rd is fine. I run 15psi in 1st (600+whp), 19psi(700whp) in 2nd and 26psi(850whp) in 3rd onwards. Sometimes i knock 3rd down to 22-23psi depending on traction and tire condition. But you get about 110mph out of 3rd gear, so there's no need in limiting boost above 70mph. I only change into 3rd around 60-65mph.
@@Skirk84 on my old TT6, I needed to boost holding back in 3rd as well, on a 275/40 18 tyre. The Syvecs TC was cutting in, so I brought the boost down till the TC wasn’t kicking in too much in the logs
Hated the noise of it missing…
I make more power than this in my 2j car with my gtx3582r and used to use boost by gear with my 235's as it was needed but with 275/60/15 MT ET Streets totally not necessary. With a good compound it should hook with full boost due to the powerband.
G30-101 is the best fun street car...
But sadly they didnt try G35-83 which i suspect will be the best compromise for higher rpm flow and keeping better spool (they gone full circle getting slow spool like g30-63 when using g35 with 101 housing) 😓
Appreciate you guys doing this kind of back to back testing
This was a truly cool test you guys did, did not expect the spool characteristics to change and improve so much by upsizing exhaust housings. High Quality content from SA as usual. DP you're looking svelte bro, keep up the good work.
Really enjoyed both halves of the video!! You guys are always enjoyable to watch and informative 😎
Great back to back testing, I love this kind of content. Keep up the great work guy’s
Thank you for the deep dive into the curves! Love hearing about the analysis where you look at the overall power band, rather than just the peak numbers. The earlier spool of the G30 and the increased power/torque at lower RPMs was pretty interesting to see.
Been waiting for this video for over a year! Awesome job guys!
I just wanna say, i think speed academy has some of the most tasteful builds/car collections on youtube. And all the info you get from these build videos is unmatched. I love when y’all get into the nitty gritty on these builds. I’ve been watching since the Targa Newfoundland build, it’s amazing to see how far y’all have come!!! Here’s to many more builds!!!🍻
very cool episode boys! always love these detailed comparisons esp with tuners giving us the WHY. the supra rips!
Can’t wait to see this race, these 2 will be a great matchup with the Supra hitting boost early in lower gear, that gtr is going to kill in the corners though. Looking forward to it and thanks for keeping us entertained Pete and Dave!
Amazing Content, really enjoyed the way you guys put this together and always anchoring back to the goals for the car. Thanks so much
This was a great deep dive! Just as interesting, if not more, than a build series. I hope to see the same conversation about the GT-R prior to track time. Thank you for sharing your hard work!
Man that car is just so beautiful. So cool that you guys got to Dyno all those different turbo setups.
G35 + 83 would have been interesting to see.
And when it comes to response, i think Japanese builds are where it's at. Japanese builds rarely go north of 700 hp because they don't use big turbos, and they also focus a lot on suspension tuning.
They rarely go over 450. Buddy
I really enjoy this analytical type of video. Keep it up guys, love your channel!
I just got to the point when you explained what you plan to test back to back on the dyno. Epic guys, thanks for this.
Great content guys… good to see these back to back, data laden.
Finally someone making a proper video of testing all the housing garrett turbos are so great loved this vid dont think people are even realising this is minimal power car has a cat and e85 would be a massive jump
What a great video guys, fantastic stuff. For me, the most interesting things were actually on the second part of the video. In my humble opinion, I'd pick the G30 turbo with the 83 housing for better response. Looking at the graphic, yeah, both housings are spooling alright after 4500 at peak boost, but it's not only the shifting point, but the posibility to hold a gear lower in the revs and have a better pick up in the middle range, around 3500-4000 rpm, with the advantage of losing less time shifting, specially in the second to third gear shifts. But I get what Francis says about the 101 housing, it's easier to modulate the throttle if the response isn't that snappy. I don't know... I'm an NA guy, don''t mind me, lol. Cool stuff guys, love it as always.
I love it! Tons of great data and information, especially since I'm currently struggling to pick a modern turbo upgrade for my car right now too :)
Any supra content is good content haha
It was a great video with all that data and your thought process with the build.
Can't wait to see this tear up the track. Keep smashing it fellas.
Good choice going with the G30 1.01ar. Perfect street/track setup.
Great video guys! Love this technical stuff, super interesting and helpful
Amazing to see the effect of using proper fuel in a performance car!
Amazing video. I wish someone would do this kind of in-depth back to back on a 1J, but this is still so informative and well presented. Loved the techy 2nd half of the vid.
True, the 2j gets all the love lol.
I still appreciate this video so much for the 2jz community. Great job guys.
One of the best video I've seen on CZcams. Turbo sizes, exhaust housings, pump vs 105, air box, filters, all the graph, etc.
Only thing missing is seeing the plots for the boost pressures and air/fuel ratios 😉
Having in the tuner giving some insights is really awesome for understanding. Keep it up guys. The Supra will dominate on the track 😈
I would have kept the G35-900....future turbo on my 7MGTE 😎 or a comparable Boost Lab one. 🤔 That's the size I'm aiming for after my old ball bearing 67mm.
Unbelievable now how a 62mm turbo can outclass an old 67mm.
Excited to see this, guys.
Lots of cool info. Wish we coulda seen the .83 on the g35, but the g30 1.01 was cool too. Good choice fellas thanks for the video.
God damn! This is going to be a great face off between the R34 and the Supra man cannot wait! Awesome videos like always Dave and Pete!
EARLY SPEED ACADEMY UPLOADS. WHAT YEAR IS IT!?
Yeah 😯 really liked this one
2022
I’ve been eyeing the G-series turbos for my next iteration build on my 2JZGTE swapped Mk3 Supra: and this video just demonstrated exactly what I’ve been wondering about which size turbocharger to choose!
Beautifully done guys - thank so much for this content!
I somehow find you on every video I watch 😅 hope all is well buddy!
@@Godeepgts11 Where there’s a Supra, there I am. 😂 All is good bro; I hope the same with you. ✌️😎
Was about to go to sleep but hell yeah new vid! So keen for this one
Very educational video! More of these please should you have the opportunity.
Personally I would have went with the G30 and 0.83 housing.
The Super turnout a beauty. You must be proud of the hard work to get here.
Finally a turbo sized for normal power and not 1000+ HP! This was an awesome comparison of turbines and housings. I learned a lot from this, very very cool!
Omfg I'm so exited. Your content is really amazing man. Keep it all up. Love the 30 min as well
Only an info-nerd watches until the very end. That's me, I'm an info-nerd.🤓 Keep it up guys!!! One of the best channels on CZcams!!!!!!! Great balance info on the tech, how to, and all other aspects of car content!!😎😎😎
Great video with all the comparisons! One suggestion: it would have been helpful to bring up a table with key attributes you guys were looking for out of the setup (IE spool, peak power, boost pressure, race gas performance, pump gas performance, etc) in the first column, and then have each setup filled in with the characteristics as you went. Maybe it was just me, but I had a hard time keeping track with all the options.
What a great video to show all these options though!
Great content! Considering me and my buddy talking about turbos for the 2j this is perfect!
Great video and yeah love the nerdy stuff keep it coming!
I have the disadvantage of not knowing anything about turbo’s and not having english as my native language but man, I’ve enioyed this video sooooo much. Especially the dyno runs, I had my soundsystem on full volume to hear that beautiful music that engine makes❤️
I really wanted to see dyno hits from 5,000 or 6,000 rpm to actually compare response. I feel like rolls from down low can't really tell the full story. Needless to say I still really like that you guys talked it all the way through. Still stoked on a 2J response build instead of yet another dyno queen.
Great video! Thank you for this 🙏
This was a great video, thanks!
This has just answered all my questions about turbo sizing on my stock 2j. The point on having all the power top end that is not usable on the street is legit.
Pete and Dave I’m so excited to hop onto your channel every time you guys upload. I haven’t got much into hands on modifying, or track driving but your channel has got me so much more excited about it just seeing you; showing off your community, talking about the nitty gritty, and the love y’all have for what you do is just so infectious to me. I can’t wait to see the R34 and the Supra face off, no matter who wins you two now have some absolute, minty unobtanium in your fleet that I hope put big smiles on your faces every time you drive. Thank you for going through all the effort to put this out there
Dave, that shirt at the end is killer haha, can't wait to see some street pull👌
Wow 🤩, it’s 2:51am in Guam and this video was uploaded just 4 hours ago.
Can’t wait to watch this whole video later 😂
The biggest advantage of the big turbos is taking out stress on the engine and drive line. Lowering IAT’s and EGT’s is massive for engine longevity and able to lap consistently without having to stop all the time to cool down.
Great video guys!👏
Hope you guys do this type of testing on the S15 too. Would be great to know how the SR20 reacts to different rear housing sizes.
Really really informative... thank you so much.
Im happy I sat all the way through that to hear the vinnegar strokes jokes. You got a full blown lol out of me.
Great Comparison video guys! It would be nice to do a comparison with a nice tubular turbo manifold versus that log manifold. In my experience those log manifolds choke up the engine just like that small .61 turbine housing did.
Fantastic and informative video on the differences and nuances of small deliberate upgrades and their results. Using data and knowledge from your tuner is the best way to modify and build cars. MKIV Supra owner here and mine is built. I am interested to know how cool your IATs (intake air temps) and engine stays during street, stop and go, and track driving. Mine is also built to be a street/road course car.
Thank you guys for the great content and cars!! I like your channel and the builds you've been doing this last year big time. Thank you. I do think that one of the things I'm disappointed in is that there seems to be no interaction between you guys (even if whomever is reading the comments is from a team of people we don't know LOL). I never see any response from the channel in the comments section. So questions seem pointless to ask and that makes any community feel here seem non existent. Or at best only one sided. I'd like to ask about the choice to run a smaller intercooler and the idea of better low down torque and power for street fun and enjoyment. But it's pointless as you don''t interact. That's what I mean. But thank you for the great stuff!!
Youre not looking hard enough, we answer questions all the time. We simply cant answer them all though
If low and responses what you’re after I’m surprised you’re not using a VVTI head, That paired with the G 35 turbo a truly give you the best of both worlds
Holly cow! That supra made so much power, it blew off the air filter!lol. Love there approach to making usable power and not focusing on peak numbers.
This 2J sounds Sofa King awesome! Great job DP and get ready to spank that GTR
Proves what I have been saying for years, a well built engine running a modern turbo always responds better on the bigger turbo, the IAT’s drop, less boost needed and the bigger turbos give better fuel economy.
Another advantage, the big turbos also give a form of boost by gear, in 1st and second engine rpm acceleration means they push slightly less boost which is good for clutches and grip, 3rd gear and up the turbo spool match’s or exceeds rpm gain so you get max power… really enhances the big engine warp speed feel in the car.
Try the two larger turbo sizes on the street and see what you like. Another option is have a switchable map so as the turbos are easily exchanged you could run a smaller turbo on the street and a big boy for the track… But I cannot see you go small now.
Thats cool, the second paragraph explains a lot of Honda turbo builds in particular. 3rd and 4th always pull harder even without a boost by gear computer setup
I agree as long as it's not laggy. But i run a 67mm turbo on mine vs the g35's 62mm and mine is more responsive than this setup, i run boost by gear and am not stressing turbo, engine etc until i get into three higher gears. On e85 im making around 480kw atw on 15psi (low boost). Easy power. And 410kw on pump. Both great for street and super responsive, full boost at 3000rpm
Id run a borgwarner s366 sxe
@@Skirk84 what turbo are u running and what A/R? Also what exhaust manifold (twin scroll or Single) and cams?
Love this build!
VP MS109 (109 octane) is unleaded and oxygenated if you’re ever needing more then 105 octane. It’s what we run in our car and has been amazing. Great video, love the comparison work you guys did, that’s a lot of work for some amazing information and data!
E85 is about 109 octane and probably half the price of race gas, so there’s that. Plus it has far superior cooling properties. Too bad we can’t get it at the pump in Ontario.
Actually if you use the same octane numbers, the Sunoco is 110 RON, and the MS109 is 109. Sunoco use the AKI numbers, (so 105) rather than the Motor or Ron numbers. The Sunoco EVO10 actually has a slightly higher oxygen content than the MS109, plus doesnt contain MTBE, so wont eat your engine bits.
Thanks for the effort
So much work and just as much data. Thank you very much, this helps a lot of guys out there.
IMO you should have gone with the 0.8 housing on the G30 for a street car. You had ~70ft lbs more tq right before 4k rpm with the smaller housing, that's nearly 20% more tq, but you only gain like 20-30hp up top with the 1.01 housing (which is only ~5% difference).
Car looks and sounds amazing btw =)
This vid solidified how important ar is and made it clear for a 400 to 500whp 3.0L the gt30 .83 or .86 ar is the way to go.
That is the best turbo blow off sound I have ever heard on a Supra.
Love gifts presented in my YT notifications. Now time to settle in and enjoy.
This video is what I expect from SA. Teaching us what the actual demonstrable and measurable differences parts make on any given project so we can all decide which mods are worth it. Academies Teach.
You guys are awesome 🔥
we need more back to back turbo testing.... this is the info ive been looking for. 500hp suprised you did not do 3" cat back.
Not into supras or JZs but this one looks nice. Enjoyed the video but felt few things could have been improved / more thorough.
I think the G35 with .83 housing would really have been a good test and may have been a great compromise between the G30 & 1.01 and the G35 & 1.01.
MAP trace at the very least would have been nice. Either as part of the ECU logs or connected to the dyno.
ECU logs with turbo speed sensor would be nice to see.
Obviously wasnt planned and but for something like this seeing pressure ratio and EGTs would be extremely valuable.
Also don't think that "larger" filter was the solution to the restriction.
Airbox closed 486whp
Airbox open 506 whp (difference peak 20hp / 4%)
Small filter & airbox closed 617whp
"Big" filter 632whp (difference peak 15hp / 2.5%)
To simulate road conditions at least marginally more could have tried moving the blue fan closer to see if there was any difference there.
The wavy dyno chart up top is slightly concerning as that's already got a smoothing factor of 5.
Thanks for the videos guys ✌🏻
Gem of a video... thank you.
Damn. Damndamn. That thing is gorgeous. AND built RIGHT! Tune for fun and longevity, not numbers
Love the show boys great content. I knew the twin turbo Gtr with less power and 4/11 gears would beat the single turbo Supra, the smaller twins on the Gtr make a load more torque so much earlier in the rev range and I would guess a whole lot more torque revs for revs than the supra, that's why nissan went down the twin route because they wanted response!. I also get confused when north American based youtubers say race track, because you mean drag strip,in the U.K. when we say race track we mean circuit. Thankyou boy's keep it up,would love to see more in depth engine builds being an engineer. ❤
Perfect build 👌
Thanks!
Amaziiiiing ep guys!!!
Great video!
i want to go back to the 90s just so i could tell the Supra guys that in the future if your supra doesn't make 4 digits on the dyno people will yell at you.
After all the very interesting content I got answers to a lot of questions but gaind even more 😂.
When artec launched the manifold I instantly bought one together with an G30-770 .83. hunting the ultimate response. Difference is I'm using a Vvti and 264° by Titan... I was hoping for 500 at the wheels...as I see now, that's not going to happen without an intake or porting... but on the other hand 10psi below 3000 is nearly as good as stock😅
Great video guys! It helps a lot to choose a turbo for my project. Thanks a lot) BTW why you didn't choose twinscroll setup to get even earlier spool?
I do wonder if the G35 with the small housing would be the sweet spot between the two… Great video
You guys have the map for both of the setups you like. Would love to see you try out both on track and street.
I make a similar amount of power with a rwd Skyline on a modified Holset HX35 which places it kind of in the middle of flow of your two turbos. I don’t find myself wanting anymore low end torque even with a 275 r888r on the back.
i love all the data!
beautiful build.
I know it's not apples to apples, but I love these videos because I'm trying to choose a turbo for the M54b30 in my e46
Same here. I'm probably never going to own an R34 GT-R, but I get a kick out of finding the best, responsive turbo for an RB26.
Glad the air filter data was in here… most project CZcams cars run either no air filter or too small a filter.
only 8minutes in and what a great video
This is such great data. Got a potential LS 4.8L project using a couple of turbos. I'm thinking either G30-660 1.01 / .83 thanks guys!
Would have loved to see the 1050 model, but this is good enough of a size comparison for sure.
Hardcore viewer here! I’m sure you guys would of just been fine with the bigger turbo! Lap test both turbos!
Amazing video every minute here quality info. Did the filter size math ever get released?? Would be interesting to know 26:10
