    i have a friend that asked about switching to linux, even though he is not the brightest. after showing him how to set up a vm of opensuse, we decided to research what software he would be missing out on and what he would need to learn. it turns out, he'd lose access to one game (tarkov) and setting up vr was slightly annoying on a quest. (there is beta software to stream vr games to a quest headset on linux) These issues were not enough to discourage him, and next week he is going to install it on bare metal. he did say that he would swap back if it was too much of a hassle, which is fair i guess, but he also said that he didn't think it would really get to that point. So, linux is an option people are considering, it's just that people might be going back and forth, between it and windows since it's not 100% seamless.

Whenever windows becomes a subscription which has been rumored for win 12 its already sinking marketshare is going to plummet.

      @@DamienCloud Yeah it doesn't really matter.
      Manjaro KDE, Fedora, PopOS, Linux Mint, EndeavourOS, base Ubuntu. All decent options.
      Two major considerations:
      What is your preferred desktop? Just try them out. I prefer KDE, but there's also Gnome and Cinnamon. If you don't know, I'd recommend to try Manjaro KDE, Fedora for Gnome (I like their setup a bit better than stock ubuntu), and Linux Mint (they use Cinnamon, their own desktop, otherwise not super popular).
      What is your preferences in distribution/updates/packaging?
      If your machine is very new, maybe take a rolling release distro like Manjaro/EndeavourOS, though Fedora and PopOS might be fine there too.
      Otherwise they'll all be fine, most applications are flatpak nowadays anyway, for better or for worse.
      I like arch based packaging (e.g. Manjaro/EndeavourOS or pure Arch), but it can be a bit more tedious, haven't used RPM packaging yet (Fedora), but ubuntu-based packaging (e.g. apt) is generally the best supported, though the advantage has gotten very thin (used by Ubuntu, PopOS, Linux Mint)

I may be wrong but it's more of a term from linear algebra than AI and tech world. It is widely used in machine learning (thus names like tensor flow which is basically engine for processing tensors with some AI-focused tooling)

    BTW: I do have at least 3 broadband providers to chose from: Spectrum Cable, AT&T Fiber, and Google Fiber. Now, I'm a techie - I know how to read the specs, and Google being the only one Gigabit down AND up (and having 2GBit/s down as $30 more option) was the easy choice, given it is also $20 cheaper at least than the competition - and it has less downtime. Especially the downtime, I had 1 so far since switching and that was a short one. Before that, Spectrum had them on a bimonthly basis at most inconvenient times.
    So, I welcome clear labeling so other people less tech savvy can get a better understanding and don't have to dig through fine print to find these things. Especially data caps for high speed are egregious and in some areas still a thing - more likely where they have a monopoly.

Gaming focused Linux Distro's like Nobara make moving from Windows much easier for beginners. The only thing holding PC gamers back from mass migration to Linux is studio's unwillingness to allow their anti-cheat engines to run under Linux. Most Anti-cheat engines have Linux compatibility, but the gaming studio licensing the anti-cheat chooses to "toggle off" Linux compatibility. It's horribly frustrating when you understand not being able to run most AAA FPS games is not a compatibility problem, but an internal policy decision by the gaming studio!

    The new APUs aren't really just a little bit of a boost, they're getting 4 more CUs. Even with zero generational uplift that'd still be a 33% increase. Wasting valuable space on the chip for LLM fake "AI" garbage is a massive disappointment, though. It'd be much better used for extra cache.

    • @vocassen
      @vocassen Před měsícem +1

      Agreed. I'd love to use it in some capacity, but so far, I don't see a use. They're not fast enough for local LLMs, but maybe it can be used for accelerating AI voice cleanup or video background removal or something along those lines. So I guess if you want to want to scream into your mic on the train and want your teammates to hear you well it's a benefit. Not buying the whole AI to search your files crap, just organise them well. We're far from a proper assistant anyway.
      So yeah, I do think it might be great for people in video calls for a good part of their day, and like to work out of home, but I'm not buying this whole AI everywhere thing just yet.
      Ofc, being on Linux, I'm not sure to what degree these applications will be available to me anyway.

      @vocassen Před měsícem +1

      @@Zuriki09 Uhh the whole point of the dedicated AI accelerators is that you can do this stuff more efficiently. Ofc you can do that on a dedicated GPU, but expect to have a lot less battery life. And potentially sacrificing performance in your game.
      No, these are there to enable these technologies even on thin&lights, or on your main rig but without sacrificing battery life too much.
      In fact, I believe I saw that even on a modern ryzen APU, the iGPU would still be more powerful doing the same task than the RyzenAI engine on the same chip, but be a lot less efficient doing it. I wouldn't want to use anything AI if it meant sucking back enormous amounts of power and fans running at 100%.
      That's what it's for.

    • @vocassen

      But that's not the point. The problem is that I, as a consumer, don't know of any application that actually makes use of it. I know windows will, but I don't use windows. I'd hope Discord will for noise suppression, but idk. Even AMDs own noise supression currently only runs on CPU or GPU, they don't mention RyzenAI. So that's more the problem, despite microsoft hyping it up and pushing it, there's nothing to actually market here yet. I just hope there will be

Is going make windows look very bad for pc gaming. We already know steam deck /steam os are best os currently for mobile gaming. Now we just need Valve launch steam os for desktop pc. Before windows 10 EOL happens. Then hopefully devs and studio will start supporting Linux more and hopefully will see in OS requirement : steam os / window 10+.
    There are a lot ppl who do not like windows 11.

    Linux IS getting a little bit more popular but there are still too many things in EXPERIMENTAL phase atm and some features missing that will really piss people off, on top of that it still has plenty of Anti-Cheat issues going on. So until all that is improve significantly, yeah there won't be a HUGE shift to linux, not for a long time.
    BUT there is a little shift toward the platform, and Hardware VM's are becoming more practical as a middle ground solution.

    I worked in the phone repair industry for 5 years. Apple does not care and the way that they are going about it still will end any 3rd party repair shop from fixing your phone 100%. You can become apple certified but they can come into your business unannounced and control which devices/parts you can repair. If you stop the apple certification program they can still come into your business unannounced for a year. Apple only is doing this for themselves and does not care about any mom and pops store. Since working in the industry i moved to samsung because if i run over this phone i can change every part by myself without losing functions... Apple is a joke and should be avoided. Nothing is special about that company. They have the weakest SOC out of Intel, AMD, and Apple. Apples proven to have worse performance and efficiency per watt than there competitors after over 500 tests. They build phones for Grandparents but kids think the being restricted part is cool. They claim that it needs to be a genuine Apple screen as if they are the ones actually manufacturing it. Battery, Top Speaker, front camera, back camera, proximity sensor, etc will break some functionality of the device and Apple manufacturers ZERO of these parts. You have to know better than to openly praise Apple for putting thousands of Mom and Pops stores out of business.

      Because issues are not as straightforward and easy to fix. Gaming is complex and issues you have in a game is dependent on what you have installed and your issue could be niche. On top of the fact that not everyone wants to figure out any sort of coding whatsoever and wants to potentially troubleshoot a seemingly simple issue for hours. I am personally tired of windows, but I run multiple games with a myriad of mods and the issues I had on Windows I know would be even worse on Linux. If the Linux community could come together to work on one user friendly operating system rather than everyone being up their own behinds about how they want things to be, then there would be a real possibility of Linux taking over. But nope. Also most Linux users don't see a problem with having to code fixes when something goes wrong and expect everyone to be willing to do that. That is unreasonable and is the reason why people prefer windows or mac. Ease of use and things usually being fixable with a simple restart or simple rearranging or simply uninstalling or reinstalling something. Good luck with that being all you need to fix an issue on Linux.

All this prefer thing people prefer using Windows not Mac or a Linux, and the fixing code is far from reality that if anyone want to be in that use case not everything have to be on arch or a rolling distro.
