An Even Easier Way to Tamper with Wristbands

- In a previous video (link at the end) we talked about removing and re-applying wristbands if you have spare snaps. How do you get a wristband off without cutting or breaking it, however, if you don't have tools on you?
As I learned in Vegas... teeth work just fine! 👍😁👍
My dentist: "So what brings you here today?"
In all seriousness, thank you for the work you do. And being willing to really sink your teeth into it.
“Thoo hereth the thtory…”
new in the store:
spare teeth replacements.
what others bought with this item:
wristband buttons.
Better than crimping split shot with teeth at least.
That's how we always did it as kids, the yearly local fair used colour codes for each day or weekend pass, but otherwise the bands would stay the same year to year, but the colours would change.
After enough years, we had multiples of all the colours, around the time we lots interest in going to the fairs. But got in free alot once we figured out either the days colour, or the weekend pass colours
as a stagehand it’s super helpful to be able to do this.
and as a stagehand i’m even more terrified of who will be slipping backstage than ever
the fabric style (plastic nut) with RFID is standard now but i’ve seen plenty of people use gaff tape to repair those
The thing I learnt most from this is why they hell there's so much Wristband content on this channel.
I first learned this trick in the Douglas County Jail back in 1998! LoL
Bonus: if you do it just right, you can also save the little plastic button.
After a few openings and closings, the lands that bite on the retainer become rounded, which makes it almost as easy to operate as a regular clothing snap.
In the jail, sleeping with the wristband on is very uncomfortable because you're on a concrete or metal slab on a duct tape mattress three inches thick, so being able to remove the band before sleep can really help your day stay in focus...even while incarcerated.
I feel like this goes hand-in-hand with the last video. It may not be a pretty solution, but it's quick, simple, and has no additional requirements
Use a fork, has a good chance of popping open the snap and it being reusable. But since watching this channel now I found a place to buy the snaps don't have to worry about breaking it now.
Having been in the hospital unfortunately more times than I can count at this point (MRSA pneumonia is a bitch), I've had to remove a fair few wristbands, and before they switched over to the pure evil plastic-laminated paper that's adhesively secured, the hospital used bands like those, and I'd regularly get home and bite the snaps off.
1 out of 10 dentists approve this method. They need the business.
How soft are your teeth? Those snaps are very soft plastic.
Why, do they use wristbands for marking patients, that still have to pay the bill?
@@Alacritous it's not the strength of the plastic, it's what happens when the snap gives way and the teeth slam together
@@csours Well that would be a valuable lesson.
@@Alacritous valuable but expensive
Saw that trick for the first time, when in Egypt as a local wanted to help me get a nice photo not wearing the all-inclusive band. if you do not bite too hard, you teeth will just become a prying tool, pulling the snap off and it will lock again.
This'll come in handy at the next IncelCon.
I have always used my teeth on these. The snap doesn't always crack. I have been doing this for over 10 years and it has never failed.
In my experience if you bite down in a similar fashion to the way you used the nail clippers you can actually reuse the snap.
Ah, a bite sized tip.
Ok, ok, no need to call security, I'll show myself out.
Missed you at the InfoSec campout last weekend. Bummed you weren't able to make it, but I had a great time there.
Haha I learned that one when I was a kid 🤣
When the only tool you have is teeth, everything begins to look like wristband snap closures.
Yup, that was always my go-to.
Mostly, because I’ve always got them with me. ;-)
i have been doing this for years for mcm comicon, teeth or multi tool and carry a popper setting tool to take the band on and off whenever i want. the paper bands are the real pain in the ass
Love it
Must have been cheap snaps, but left an all inclusive hotel last week, and I actually just twisted the snap right out of the bands. Slight pulling action, quite a bit of rotation, with the snap held between thumb and fore finger... POP!
Tampering voids warranty. 😄
I don't get out much. Why would I want to non-destructively remove and reapply a wristband? I've learned a lot from your channel - this is an honest question. Thanks.
Same?
Possible Reasons:
1. Hygene - If you are at a multi day event, and the access control is via those wristbands, you might want to remove them to wash yourself. Even more so if you have a talent to spill stuff like beer or hot dog sauce over yourself.
2. Skin Irritation - Some people get irritatet skin from them, so it might be more comfortable to remove them
3. Protection - Some of those wristbands can get damaged if you for example go swimming, or take part in some sporty outdoor stuff like climbing or mountainbiking. If you wish to return to the venue of a multi day event afterwards, it might be better to take it of
4. Privacy - Sometimes you do not necessary want to be linked to a specific event. Escpecially so if there are some very confrontational people around.
He covers a lot of that in the first video. Answers range from "Imagine it's a multi day event. it's annoying having to wear it that long" to "it can make you look like an easy mark/tourist if you're in shady areas wearing an event wristband". Of course there are also unethical reasons to want to do this
I've been at 5 day events with one wristband for the entire thing. They're plastic so they don't breathe, and especially if staff are applying them they can be overly tight.
The plastic ones are at least better than the paper ones, because you usually can't get the paper ones wet
Honestly though, it's also a freedom thing. Going from being forced to keep it on to being able to remove it and put it back on when wanted
I bit down, looked in my hand to find the snap as well as the corner of my tooth
lol great idea
Why not thread your replacements to make them more than one time use?
Because you can probably buy 100 mass produced non-threaded clips for the price of 1 custom threaded one.
WTF! I was at a convention last weekend and at the end decided to try the tooth method to remove my wristband. Biting through didn't work, but simply shifting my jaw popped the button off nondestructively. Now it's easy to pop off with teeth, then snap the button back on with a finger.
My technique isn't great but it works. Cut the wristband up to the button so it makes a little hook. There's usually a small place where it isn't noticeable but you can take it off and put it back on again.
I've cut them and doubled over some electrical tape and duct tape and just taped them back on. No one ever pulls on them to make sure they are firmly attached.
does hot or boiling water help ease the release of these too?
Occam's Chompers!
Please sell dentures on your site. Thx!
I've always just shimmed them off. Just move the little clips over the head of the male end and reused the original snap.
9/10 dentists approve this video. $$$$$$$
With two small flat-head drivers, it's not too hard to keep the snap intact- but you need extra hands.
Hi there. I'm new to your content and have an interest in the security field. Can you recommend any courses or graduate studies that lead to this line of work? I have an undergrad computer science degree, but no infosec or physical security background. Thanks.
HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE PLASTIC LOCKING TEMPORARY TAG FOR POWER BOXES??
WITHOUT DAMAGING IT??
The wire strippers that are always with you
Seems like there could be a 3d print solution with a mini blade.
Welp, guess I'm out of luck on that one... I haz no more teeth, sonny...
Excuse me sir, can you tell me there is slobber all over your wrist band?
When I was in graduate school for physics I taught an electronics lab, and frequently had to strip the wires we used for the breadboard lab kits. I got very good at pulling the wire through my front teeth to strip it. By the end of the semester the bonding on my front teeth (I cracked my front teeth when I was a kid and had bondings) had failed and I had to get it redone at the student health clinic.
Although plastic is probably safer I'd be careful if you have dental work on your front teeth.
Ben Heck said he needed to have some work done and asked the dentist to mold a wire stripper into the crowns
What do you see companies doing once everyone knows about this. Is there anything they could do for cheap to make this attack harder?
My guess would be unique security buttons (uv reactive/colored) or security buttons that damage the wristband when removed
What? No! Don't be ridiculous!
They will either:
1) insert small sideways pins that stab your gums when you bite down
2) have a micro dye-pack in the clasp such that biting it detonates a tiny charge to release the dye
Yes, I am being silly, but it's okay-I have a license to say crazy things.
I think the trick is 'nothing'. Because this information will hit the typical information wall and it'll stay a 'secret' for years if not decades. The absolutely stupid irony of all of this is that while they're a scam as a monetary vehicle, this is actually the kind of problem that an NFT is good for.
@@Deveyus NFTs are not even a good solution for this, you could use a regular app/website with a QR code that the staff scan before letting you in. pretty sure airlines already do this for their tickets
@@Deveyus Does it need to be decentralized? No, because a single entity is running the event anyway - use a database. Other than that, it's true that probably nothing will change - people have been taking off those wristbands for years (via cutting and taping, clipping off and later supergluing back together the clasp, etc) and it hasn't caused any significant changes to their use.
@@Deveyus As usual, 99% of the time you can substitute blockchain tech with a PostgreSQL server and lose nothing.
Cool tip. But as for replacement, why not just carry a small machine screw and nut? Less plastic waste I would think. Iguess I don't go to enough events that require wrist bands. LoL
what about the paper style ones
And now people will start making proprietary snaps of some kind to make it easier to identify wristbands that have been tampered with?
What if i pack teeth?
I have a tin pair of scissors that cut through.
Caution, Do Not Swallow.
Damn it, Reading and Leeds ended yesterday.
As a Reading local, thank $deity that's over for another year 😉
another wristband is cheaper than what the dentist charges.
What if I don't have teeth? Are you going to be selling this as a kit?
... or: * Jedi hand movement * You don't need to see my wristband. 😉
We don't need to see his wristband.
You can go about your business.
Move along.
savage! lol
So easy, even a caveman can do it.
maybe it cracks the snaps, without breaking the band, but what about your teeth?
Almost every teenager knows this trick. I guess when you become a adult, you kinda forget about what used to be important
The thumbnail says ‘writsband’ instead of ‘wristband’
Don't swallow the snaps. No matter how tempting that may be...
Forbidden chocolate chips...
Bro why are people teeth so brittle here lol drink some milk 🥛
Never knew this was such a big thing
