@@LaiskaPaskaRacing I've just watched the original video back and you're quite right it's an inline 5 diesel, although you wouldn't think it from the sound it makes.
These are the sort of episodes that got me into car throttle and what kept me, glad to see a return to form.
I am also impressed that the V70 wasn't that much slower given it has 250k more miles, shagged tyres and aged suspension setup for comfort rather than the Skoda's which is setup for track times

Skoda's setup is far from a track setup lol, it's still more comfortable than the Volvo, it just doesn't roll around like a boat.

@@douma-wm1ph This was the 163 lower trim model. At the same year you could get the same engine but with different turbo, ecu, and injectors making 185hp. Easily tunable way up to 210hp

S/V40 mk1 doesn't feel Volvo at all if you've ever driven one. Made on the Mitsubishi Carisma chassis. Meh. The next gen is on Focus platform and is unbelievably numb to drive.

I am over the moon seeing this as a recent owner (2 months ago) of a D5 V70 54 plate manual. Love the old horse, 200k miles on it and cost me a grand. Got the 54 because its the last one without a DPF, which has been the bane of my life for the past 5 years in all of my modern diesels.
Okay after watching the video it makes the Volvo look dreadful. Mine isn't a crap bag like this thing, for a start everything works and it pulls like a mule! Still, class video!
Got the same car. They are amazingly tough. Look after it and it will do another 200k! Enjoy it.

@@EazyDuz18 They really haven't aged vs the likes of an estate passat or any estate really from 2000 to 2004. The interior has aged quite nicely, they're well specced (mine has parking sensors, Auto headlights and folding mirrors) and reminds me of my Saab 93 with the instruments tilted more towards you. Swedish lot just know how to make a good car

In stock form these Volvos are sleepers and out preform their numbers on paper: 850R, V70R, S60R, T6 3.0L XC70, C30 T5 R-Design, C30 Polestar (only 250 made), 2015 V60 T6 Polestar (si6 engine), the Polestar 1 and 2.
Any volvo with T5 or T6 engine (actual 5 and 6 cylinder engines not new 4 cylinder engines) are capable of huge power gains with modest ECM tuning/reflashes that can give a proper sports car a run for their money.
Helmets, padded jackets and.... Shorts.. 😂😂 love it!!!

Mine doesnt have any suspension upgrades but it takes corners really well without leaning, like its impressive for a wagon, this one is just shot dead probably😂

The more obscure the car the better, like making a land yacht a track car or making some 1L Micra into an awesome handling go kart!
If the next car you do this with has a turbo, try upping the boost a bit if you can to try and increase horsepower
It would be interesting to see how many more things you can take off the car and still be driveable.

for a wagon it handles quite well, my 230kmh capable AU falcon wagon with mad soft single stage leafs needed a welded diff to corner fast, this thing just takes it like a champ

@@davidholdway6224 All relative. Gareth as a % of the total weight was a lot more in the Volvo, so his impact on the lap time would be higher.
Without being that drastic. I was more thinking of you undertray as you could see it acting as an air brake through most of the corners.
They could've also stripped the carpets, headliners and possibly draining some fuel.

@@firewaffle1 I’ve calculated that. The Octavia vRS fuel tank is 52l or 11.4 UK gallons and from London to Paris is around 575 miles, so that means averaging 50.4mpg. Škoda says that this car will do 50.4mpg and that it’s possible to make it back.

It's probably not that draggy with the lack of a boot lid. The air entering through the door openings can go straight out the back
@@craig855s you'd be surprised how much drag it could possibly cause. Have you ever noticed that hatchbacks (and estates are hatchbacks) all need a rear wiper? That's to do with the (not sure of the technical term, but I'm gonna go with) vortices causing spray to be flung up. Now, I may not be totally accurate, but someone else can maybe drop a science bomb in here.
Having said that, Volvos aren't exactly renowned for being aerodynamic TBF. The aero of a brick!
@@LiamNI Yes i understand that a flat backed car causes drag because there is a low pressure area behind the car, but as this car is essentially hollow then it's not going to suffer with this issue. Yes fitting actual body panels that weigh absolutely nothing would be better than leaving huge gaps, but thats gonna be prohibitively expensive (the tailgate on a volvo V70 is already made of GRP rather than metal in order to save weight)
@@craig855s Top speed would probably be way heigher if they kept the doors, windows, bumpers, and all the other externals on. But for acceleration, handaling, and braking it's quicker if you remove it all

To be fair, it doesn't even feel like they're trying anymore. They upload only once per week, videos aren't particularly long either. Also, very often, they're uploading bullshit videos like that one with those abandoned cars in the forest, or the one with the super rare car that was actually a shit box. Where's Ethan's Z3? Where's Phill? Where are the crazy builds like jaguar mud type? Where's the podcast? It's like they deliberately stop making all the videos people actually like and they simply release low effort bullshits

Awesome video! Thank you all for making it! Any chance that you could make the next video just a touch different? Identical, but install new tires and do a super basic tune up. Basically, just get the older stripped car a chance to perform. Maybe even decent used tires or something? A $1,000 budget and strip. Budget stripping, hmm.
