Tsunami2107 - the art has gone from a static piece of art to a performance piece that is generating headlines around the world. Because of it, people are discussing the very nature of art, capitalism and wealth. That is one hell of a back story. It’s no wonder that people are more interested and so the value has increased.

@@eloquentlyemma I agree, art is constantly changing and those changes are often but not always breaking with the tradition before it or some kind of radical turn of events. Historically at least, but this was a single piece, with a direct change to the work itself and its value, as you stated.

What a brilliant piece of performance art: the artist has made a comment about the disposability of modern art, the mutable nature of some works, the relationship between the buyer and seller, and potentially the very concept of value. Does the value lie in the physical piece of art, or the story that accompanies the art. The possibility for interpretation is endless.
In doing so he/she has generated headlines and controversy turning a routine art sale into something that many people will be talking about and discussing for quite some time.
After all, isn’t that one of the goals of modern art.

    • @speakeasy5306

Quote: The possibility for interpretation is endless .... BULLSHIT!
A painting should always SELL ITSELF, be it a VERMEER or a RENOIR.
And if not, the BUYER is motivated only by FASHION AND MONEY:
And a work-of-art that speaks to you is the last thing on their mind!

    • @eloquentlyemma
      @eloquentlyemma Před 5 lety +5

stewart william That’s the point. It’s no longer just a painting, what happened has turned it into a performance. It’s now an event that people are talking about. Everyone has their own opinions from whether he/she was trolling the art world, or screwing over the rich buyers.
By doing this Banksy is adding to his/her fame... or infamy, which I would suggest is more of a motivation considering artists in general and also that other similar (but non-shredding) Banksy paintings have sold for equally large amounts of money.

When I studied art briefly, my class had a particular project to complete in groups. My group had no idea what to do, so I explained to them it's not what we do it's how we sell it. We piled up a bunch of random junk, whatever crap we could put together, and when the teacher asked us about our efforts I spewed forth a few sentences of bullshit that didn't even mean a lot to me. We received the highest grade in our class.

Technically, it was only partially shredded - the shredded portion still remains attached to the unshredded portion, so the artwork is still complete. If the entire picture had been shredded, or if a cross-cut shredder had been used instead, it would tell a different story.
The auctioneer himself may or may not have been aware of the stunt, but given the shredder installation would have significantly increased the bulk and weight of the picture (plus the suspicious slot hole in the bottom of the frame), whoever liaised with Banksy / Banksy's representatives would probably have asked questions. Someone in on the stunt presumably would have had to have been in the auction room to remotely activate the shredder when the sale was complete.

It isn't the quality of the work. It's the snobbery attached to who painted it. Also it's mostly a big money laundering scam.

I read he didn't want it to be sold at auction and he was there "under cover" and he remotely pressed a button so it would shred. Love it

Naugh, just reeks of performance art. The auction house was definitely in on it (they have to verify the authenticity of the art so they must have noticed the suspiciously oversized frame), and therefore the buyer must have been in on it too (or it was fraud).
Actually disappointed, ten years ago Banky was amazing (secretly putting up fake art in real gallerys) ... This is a bit ... Staged

Is the frame for sale? I know of a few pretentious local artists who's work would go nicely with this particular frame.
