The mysteries of Banksy

- Putting together the first authorized exhibition in 14 years of works by the anonymous street artist Banksy required extensive planning and a cover story to hide its true identity until it opened, unannounced, in Glasgow this summer. Correspondent Seth Doane explores the art and the mysteries of Banksy's world, including the continued speculation about the artist's true identity, a closely-held secret for decades.

I don't want to know, I don't need to know. His art speaks for itself.
Indeed. What difference would it make except to ruin part of the charm?
Don’t you think he(they) are tempting us to unmask him? The wizard will always be revealed.
“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain…”
Without knowing the identity, the art can stand apart from the artist as much as possible.

Banksy is a mob of 23+ British Intelligence secret agents and their agent associates throughout NATO.
The timed shredding of his auctioned artwork was pure genius!. Banksy's true art is the meaning of his work..
It's the meaning of his messages. Don't miss what he's trying to say to people.
The obsession over his anonymity is one of his best works, IMO. It's like people need to have that mystery even though it's really no longer there. It's interesting from the sociological and psychological perspective. The human need for mystery seems stronger than the need for answers.
It's no secret who he is. I worked it out probably 10 years ago, and his musical collective has confirmed it several times in recent years.
It's not really a mystery to anyone who appreciates his work as an artist and a musician.
Ok but you didn’t figure it out though did you
Who is he??
@@brianredban9393 Banksy is most likely Robin Gunningham
It's not Robert from Massive Attack lol, it's Robin Gunningham.
so, basically every artist, without discrimination
More than “he’s a good person”, he attracts good people. An opportunistic person would sell him out in an instant no matter how good a person Banksy is.
we have absolutely no idea he's a good person. plenty of people make great art and are awful, awful human beings.
Look up what happened to Robbo.
we can separate his art & himself as a person. atleast we know the 'message' in his art is good and thats enough.
@@MrBongobongbongo Are you suggesting Robbo's death was anything to do with Banksy?
@@hugsdontwork2283who's robbo
What I love about his work is that you can see it on the streets and take a picture of it. You know you are a part of history and you can understand what the artist is saying in that very moment. I don’t need to know who he is because his work it provocative, uplifting and full of expression. Plus I like the idea he could be standing next to me on the street and I don’t know what he looks like.
You can take a picture of anything on the street -- including graffiti and any artist's who displays his/her work on sides of buildings, ets. You can take picture of art in museums, too. That you can understand what he is saying at that very moment -- at that very moment you are seeing it -- is also true of other artists whose work is as simplistic as this Bansky person.
You can see dog shot on the streets and take a photo.. that does not constitute artist genius.
This is a Marketing ploy of dramatic proportion.
Banksy, is that you?
Yes, it's not locked away in some rich persons collection.
I'm 27 now and I first saw Banksy art online, growing up. And it made me think that art has no rules when everyone around me was trying to push me towards doing it "the right way". I'm grateful for it a lot. Thank you Banksy ❤
Exactly! There are no rules, just as long as it doesn't harm people physically, or cause death. And the canvas is all around us. Imagine if all artists used these surfaces everywhere? What a color of character it would be!
Loved the shredding stunt. Ingenious idea. Look how much it increased in value because of it. What a show!
When it happened I had numerous arguments with idiots who didn't understand that it only added to the value of the work. The act of destruction could only make it MORE valuable, because it added to the story of the piece, it became alive again in that moment. This actually reveals both the negative and positive side of the art "business". It's a bad thing that art is valued the way it is on little more than notoriety, but also a good thing that even that grotesquely cynical industry could still comprehend the value in that new story for the piece. If it really was as cynically terrible as we all like to say it is, then the art would have been considered worthless after that.
@@ct5625 the shredder on the frame is part of the art and engineering from Banksy
The point of the shredding was to show how ridiculous wealthy people can be when putting a price on something so small. Even more ridiculous putting an outrageous prince on the simple shredding of that piece after.
People are missing the whole point of Banksy here.
Steven Spielberg is a true genius, he unintentionally created Banksy.
He's a "happy accident" I'm quoting Bob Ross.
What does Spielberg have to do with Banksy? Peter Benchley is the one who wrote the story.

There's no need to know who's Banksy - Banksy is what we see on the streets, not the human behind it.
Banksy's true art is the meaning of his work.
Define "true art" .
@@jeffhildreth9244 Actually the meaning of any creative work is its true art. That's why artists do it.
what does that even mean? His art is a big message to the human condition. Of our ignorances and how we can be better.
The timed shredding of his auctioned artwork was pure genius!
Banksy is doing what I would love to do. As soon as I discovered him, I became a big fan. I hope to go to the UK and see some of his work in person some day. I highly recommend watching the great documentary about him called, "Exit through the Gift Shop". Thank you.

@@kev3d you are so wrong man. You're totally missing the point of what Banksy is about. It is about our ignorance. Hipster indeed! What's the matter with you?? 🤣
I don’t need to know. As an artist i have studied his work, as a person I have enjoyed his work. An artist who has the power to make people think can’t do it if he has people trying to take selfies with him or being the toast of town. His art will endure but it believe his work would suffer if we knew publicly who he was.
Study his messages instead.
Banksy gets the wheels in my head turning till they start to smoke. He pushes me to be more expressive as an artist and to take more chances. I only do mixed media and landscapes now, but I have so many ideas. The thing is being brave enough to take that step to show what's really in my head
Well then show it! Take that first step. There's always going to be critics no matter what anyone does, so why waste time being afraid? Do this only if you truly want to though. Think long and hard about it first because headaches come with the territory. Banksy is also making a big point about anonymity. Banksy can only do what Banksy does because no one knows who this is. That's the beauty of Banksy.
Even if someone came forward as "Banksy," could it even be believed? The art has transcended the man.
Banksy hides in plain sight!! A collaboration of artist or a secretive lone ranger!! who cares. the thought provoking, social barrier breaking art work that's been displayed for all to reflect apon is changing the way many think, and act and the impact it has on others! Banksy is a game being ran by 23+ British Intelligence secret and agents including their support network throughout NATO.
It's our job to create as much confusion about Banksy as possible in order to protect what Banksy is all about. The messages of the human condition, our ignorances and how we can be better people if we try to understand our environments better.
He's Banksy the guy with the photos
I will never forget that shredded painting as long as I live 😱😱
I love Banksy's constant deflection back to what is put out as Banksy and general refusal to publicly engage as an individual. There is a freedom and vitality that comes through in that refusal to attach or insist on any personal identity to it. It feels more like an invitation than an exhibition or a statement.
That was a really good video. Def added to the world, and not just regurgitating... mostly. 🤣 but I suppose a certain amount of background was to be expected with Sunday Morning's target audience. Glad they covered him/them well, for this audience.
Somehow Banksy has captured the people attention, by silliness and irony. It's works, and even lighten up people's life's.
My friends girlfriend bought a £500,000 flat in Brighton here in the UK by selling 2 of her Banksys. My brother sold 6 Adam Neate pieces for £80,000 about 10 years ago, we used to find them lying around the streets (literally) he would leave his art in doorways, alleyways and just about everywhere in Shoreditch, London.
I love art. Thanks Mr Banksy for making great art
...that points out messages of the human condition.
It originally started out as one guy (RG) and a spray can in and around Bristol. From what I understand, it has now morphed into a collective, a sort of grass roots organisation that makes use of talented up and coming graffiti artists with bright ideas, a 'trusted band of regulars', as it's been described in the past.
Banksy is now more of a force than a singular artist, propped up by the business savvy professionals through Pest Control Office. I still think RG has the final say on things, but he has delegated and trusted a lot of his team with his vision. For example, it's theorised Mason Storm was the one who actually painted Banksy's 'Devolved Parliament', of course after being provided the idea and input by RG. Mason Storm has even sold what look like the original sketches for the painting in the past.
I think Banksy, as a movement, see's itself as a force for good, supporting, and giving street artists a chance at a grassroots level.
And you know this how? What if it's just one person who hides behind a group of people, behind separate movements? You DO know why Banksy makes this kind of art right? It's about the messages of who we are as humans, of our ignorances and how we can be better if we really try.
Banksy is immensely talented and if my city were to be blessed with his artwork, i would love it.
Banksy pulled off something that only Batman could.
Deluded.
Love this guy. His “art” is one big middle finger to the establishment all over the world.
Brilliant.
The art world loves him. Trust me.
After seeing this video on my home page, less than a minute in, I actually considered switching up Scotland for my Thanksgiving Day trip to Poland, went to the website, and see it's only a 2.5 month exhibit, ending August 28. 😭
Wouldn’t it be funny if that Steve guy was Banksy 😮
Yes...but he (Steve Lazarides) called him a genius. Banksy's not a guy who would do that.
@@anodyne57 It would be a brilliant way to hide in plain site
Its not even secret, before he hit it "big", he used to always show up to jams, he's well known to people around the scene at that time. Its Robin Gunningham. I knew who he was even before he blew up because it wasn't even a secret, if you were involved in the scene, you knew who everyone was
The craziest thing about this piece has nothing to do with Banksy and his work, but in fact is something quite different: that they described Jaws as being a “cult movie”.
I used to talk to a guy online on msm messenger back in the early 2000's who went by banksy and was into art
If I were his friend, to me it would be amusing that someone might pay me a lot of money to reveal his name, especially because I wouldn't do it. That is a priceless fact and revealing it would be one of the lowest things a person could do. I don't mean priceless in market terms, but in the fact that it's an identity, the person's self, and they should control it.
The most obvious thing is that he can't do his art anymore once people know who he is, the same for any graffiti artist.
His create and run is his form of art as well.
You mean his stencil and run art form is great lmao. They are stenciled paintings.

there is absolutely NO WAY a major auction house like sotheby's wouldn't do a complete examination of a major painting before selling it! no way... the whole "shredding" was part of the performance art that B sometimes engages in- like selling your paintings in NYC's central park for, i think, $25 or $50?
Agreed. There is no way that the mechanism wasn't visible. For one, there was a slot at the bottom of the frame. And it would have weighed much more due to the shredder, motor and battery. Someone besides him knew.
"NO WAY a major auction house like sotheby's wouldn't do a complete examination of a major painting before selling it! no way" . They have been busted several times.
I walked past that stand selling his work outside of Central Park. He had done a series of things around the city at the time, but nobody guessed that the canvases for sale were actually his.

Banksy is like the Batman of art to me.
I love Banksy and his philosophical art renderings. I do find it quite interesting that after all of these years, no one knows who he is. This is very odd. What kind of scam are we all being played for?? Not a single person has leaked is identity?? This just doesn't ring true. After all of his artistic master pieces, not a single soul has seen him do the work(s)?? He doesn't so these works in a matter of 5 seconds. It's all quite bizarre to me.

I just came back from 3 weeks in Scotland and had no idea this was happening--i feel robbed!!!
Good lord, that sweater dude is TWEAKED.
I don't really want to know WHO exactly is Banksy...Leave it alone and admire his art!
I have recognized who he is, but there is no proof. I will say this about Banksy he is right in front of you, thinking he’s homeless.
An artist set up in Central Park NYC and not many people / only 3 purchased his works. When the name Banksy was mentioned and 3 purchases authenticated, I was able locate on past auctions, he sits in the middle of the room. He wears a hat with a wig. Right in the center.
There is a lot of proof if you're looking in the right places. His band have all but confirmed it on their Instagram page, he included one of the band's most famous album covers in a pop-up London exhibition a couple of years ago, and he appeared discreetly in one of their music videos from the 1990s as an anonymous "stranger on the street" who no one even notices until it's pointed out to them. That appearance in the video kind of hints at his desire to play with anonymity and create mystery.
There's also a TV interview with him from around the same time where everything but his eyes are covered, but if you know who it is you'll also know his eyes are perhaps his most striking feature so that didn't leave much to the imagination lol
