Several years ago I posted a comment on one of Banksy's fan boards. I don't remember exactly what the comment was, but I do remember that other Banksy fans wound up responding to my well-intentioned post with mean spirited derision. As I'm autistic, I'm somewhat used to this this sort of thing - but it still hurts. However, when Banksy saw the verbal bullying his fans were engaging in at my expense, he took it upon himself to post a response in my defense. It was a small act of kindness - but it's something that I will never forget.
I love that he was able to intercede for you! It breaks my heart that you are “somewhat used to this [kind of derision].” People can be so cruel when they come across anything that isn’t just like them. Know that your mind is singular and beautiful in its neurodiversity. Thanks for sharing this with us, John. ❤

Two of my family member are on the spectrum. My little sister and my nephew. The world tends to pick and poke at anyone who appears different form the group. Your strength is in your ability to never hold resentment towards those ignorant bully’s. You appear to be a thoughtful, aware, and strong young man. I can only imagine how exciting getting a reply from B must’ve been. I’m envious and proud of you. B is an artist, and musician from another planet, and a shrewd business person jabbing a stick into the eye of art bullies. God Bless you both.
Considering how many people know him, it’s amazing he’s kept his identity hidden for so long.

It's partly respect and responsibility but mostly it's because it's dramatic. And artists love the drama

@@514HiphopHeadit can’t be him. 3D has quite a pronounced mole directly under his lower right eyelid, towards the outside corner of his eye. Footage of Banksy at 1:09:00 onwards in this video shows no mole under either of his eyes.
If you have other suspects, check out their hands - it seems he has a pretty gnarly scar on his right thumb in the knuckle area. It’s large enough at the time of filming that you would assume it would still be visible today. Obviously it wouldn’t be red as shown here, but it’d be noticeable.

My art teacher in high school who's a local artist, always used to explain art as something that provokes & awakens feeling, realisation etc.
Banksy managed that to say the least 😂 the shock & horror on the faces of those people in the room. Desperate to outbid each other.

As a person from region known for its naive art, I doubt this kind of art would be still art is revaluated by you And religious art is rarely supposed to awaken people, it's just how author expresses their feelings. Modern art often provoke just to provoke, not to change, Baudrillardian stuff is happening. As video itself realized in first minutes, this art is about recognition, not change.Personal gain vs. social change. You can see in other comment that guy was bullied and Banksy stood by him and he was so happy, because it was HIM, not a person like me or you. Look, he's a god, but he still does humane things. Wow. And when normal person does humane things it's meh - enough reason to don't respect such artists.
Banksy himself is kinda special here, because he makes upper middle class realize things that everybody knows already. Great, but what's the outcome of such knowledge? Nothing, because this class is neither willing (like low) or able (like high) to change things. But they can discuss and they "want to want", so they involve in pseudosocial (in analogy to pseudoscience), corporate driven changes. Plant a tree, sleep well... Oh sorry, not "sleep", but "change the world". Or better - buy product, they will plant the tree for you. And by that they will destroy even more, but you don't want to know about it, because maybe you'd need to actually start doing things. No, such art that would make people realize that, wouldn't be known, but buried deep. People in their sleep gets awakened and they don't realize they just entered another dream, where they are silent heroes. I should start something about fake changes to fake world, but nobody will get to that anyways - we aren't that self destructive, to rethink our actions we already deemed as good.
One of my favourite stories was a community centre which had a banksy painted on their door. From what I understand, the local council tried to take it away and the community centre wanted to sell it and use the money for the kids in the centre. They ended up writing to Banksy and asking him. Of course he came down on the side of the community centre. If art can make so much difference in society, you've got to take your hat off to the man...

I have to do some research to get the complete story. I mean he created the piece with the mechanism and the frame…. It’s not like a random piece that he did on the wall that someone removed. I mean, I know most of his workers stencils so it’s not like there is paper that could be removed. So it seems there’s more to the story… How he got it in there, etc. etc.
Although he certainly does things from time to time to play with the notion of value… Where he’ll be on the street or someone will be on the street at a card table selling his work for like $10. Do you know what I mean? I’m not saying he’s a genius, but he’s very very bright. And very very clever..

Banksy is a collection of 2-5 great artists. They are a group, collected mind creating art together. I learned this and confirmed it for myself when i watched "exit through the gift shop" twice
True..... a crew rather than a dude. But there was still the amazing kid who got it together...( totally def free hand writer too remember)..... any half decent stencil job takes more than one pair of hands anyway.... to bomb like that today.... needs to be organised and arranged to a certain level....a serious caning could require a scaffold tower, hoarding tarps, some dodgy hi vis vests (a hi vis vest carries the same weight as the double parked car on the high street with it's hazards on ... you know it's malarky but you dont risk a challenge just in case) you'll need a person fluent in multi-modal kerb side blaggery and experienced in bullsh☆☆ to navigate any possible rozzer swerving (.....and the insurance !!! OK... kidding about the insurance but the way things are with scaffold hire.... I wouldn't be surprised... we bought ours 2nd hand just to avoid the possible shame of it.... could go on.... but cherry pickers and electric scissor lifts are for commissioned works.... and that is a completely different kettle of kobra altogether.
Plagiarist's can never be truly great.. They wouldn't be stealing if they were. He/they are painting with stencils anyways.. Banksy deserves to be "booted" for his crimes against Street-Art Community so to say..

A stencil IS a hit, quickie like a tag.... Always was.... as a writer, since '83.... there were stencils.... but to actually sell out from free hand TO GO stencil as a development is like a perversion of evolution, going backwards. What amazes me is how it ENTERED the auction house without triggering metal detectors (these places always have tight security)
@@tiagodagostini but think about it... The people are the threat and maybe they fear a lunatic with a knife about to slash a canvas. The attempting to self destruct art work was a one off. The frame was by Banksy, the stencil was by Banksy, and the combo had a certificate of authenticity from Banksy: what was the problem needing security? I was amused at how baroque the frame was. Nice ironic contrast with the simple image. And these frames have metal parts such as corner braces and other bits. I'm pretty sure Banksy would have put lots of visible and innocent looking metal everywhere he could so the real workings would only be detected when they did the x-ray... and they did. Hopefully the new owner will remove the battery before it starts to leak acid.

It's because of these guys that I don't mind being caught waiting on a huge train to go by. I just sit there and admire all the artwork that is flashing by. Crazy part about it is even though its beautiful to look at, 90% of it I can't read at all. It goes by too fast for me to figure it out. But its still cool to look at.

@@fwschuddinck3406 If they choose to work for that rate then that's on them. Maybe they're happy that they have work at all. So the artists are happy they can showcase their artwork, even if only for a while. And the ones who have to remove it are happy they have work that provides money for them and their families. Seems like a win win to me.
The first thing I stole as a Detroit kid in the 90s was two cans of spraypaint, black and silver, Immediately spraying the back of the kmart I stole them from. I remember being chased away by security before I could finsh. I couldn't have been more than 8 years old at the time, but I remember seeing such amazing giant pieces around my house, and I wanted to imitate that art so badly. It was a city that had an amazing art and music scene in the late 90s as a teen. I was going to rave parties and saving money to get my own set of Technic SL-1200s. There was something about bringing art and music into the abandoned buildings, it was kinda intoxicating - like we were resurrecting the bones of the city every night with music and art. It was a good time to be creative and young.
This was such a great walk through the history of the art and made me reflect on my own influences growing up.
This was really enjoyable. Seeing the other artists' work was just as enjoyable as learning about Banksy's humble origin story.

i cann't believe one man could have so many top ideas, even for the one exhibition, like in Bristol museum (Like, it's good to have one, two very strong works at the exhibition at average). Even being a genius and generating ideas 5-10 in a day, you still need tons of time to refine them. And he had like hundreds well executed concepts already. I understand that there is a huge team of sculptors, producers, pr's and etc behind, but still, if he's generating ideas solely, it's madness.
Not a super human feat for an artist …to conceptualize 40 or so pieces before breakfast (coffee and cigarettes) but to execute it all.? It takes a village .
Banksy is like the dopest person to ever live more or less. It doesn't matter what he does, it's new inventive and amazing. A 17 year old was blown away by him, I'm now 38 years old and I'm still blown away by him. What will he do next? Everyone is waiting,.

I like Bansky. His art has a reason. He evoques happenings, in his own way. Depicting rats, policemen, a man throwing flowers, or whatever he considers related to his convictions or injustice which are not strange in this world, actually. I do support his works, whether he uses stencils, computers, graffiti or whatever. He is pointing out into social problems and hate when its about war, as in Ukraine or Palestine.

His art is nothing but another way to appeal to the masses for cash and money laundering. Something that most millionaires are doing.
I think that it's an original contemporary artist. He was able to make something new, of which in art, it's absolutely rare. The idea of making art with a strong message, proves that he's not doing it for the sake of making money, surely it's probably a person that can afford unique events, but today, in the contemporary art world, it sprayed an indelible mark.
Artists have always created images with powerful messages, whether it was _primitive_ art on cave walls or all that was permitted to be painted was religious art. Art is poetry in images.
I think scozzi was making the point he did it for free,for almost 20 years before he got fame. I'm sure Banksy is someone who has a direct connection to the band Massive Attack. Since the works in different parts of the world appear at the same time as the band arrives with their concert. It's not only about the world capitals, but also about cities like Kiev, Ukraine. Quite possibly Banksy is Robert "3D" Del Naja. He's from Bristol and is a famous graffiti artist, Banksy said that 3D's works have had a huge influence on him. Again, very often the work appears at the same time as the band's concerts in not the most touristy places.

Goldie let it slip in an interview once, that Banksy was named "Rob" He caught himself before he said too much. I believe that the Massive Attack connection is most likely correct. But now, it's more than just one person pulling everything off

We had to wait until the last decade or so before the revelations of the groups coming out of laurel canyon in the 60s was revealed. It will be some time now before this "cultural touchstone" is shown to he rooted in the same kind soil.
I've always thought 3D was Banksy/Banksy was 3D. However you want to look at it. If not the same person than one is super talented in art and the other music.
I saw Massive Attack live in Hong Kong in 2017 - I wouldn't be surprised if some new Bansky art appeared around HK. Just conjecture but it's interesting to speculate. ❤️

Bansky makes art an important voice which it sorely requires. This is the way art should be.
Why?
Art is not an important voice, especially not whatever this current cult is. How many homeless have they fed? How many jobs have they provided? Have they helped anyone besides themselves in any truly life or death meaningful way? People can't eat paintings and survive? Shelter/food/jobs for those who need them... that's what's important. Not a banana taped to a wall. (No Sht that's not banksy, you're missing the point if that was your next thought) I'm a somalia rocket engineer, I'm definitely qualified to say this.
The Walled Off Hotel ( my mind always puts the word hysteria in there) was for me the apex. Consummate social commentary and the ability to bring it all together, just astounding. Pure social science

There is a lot of talent and skill among graffiti artists. There is also a great expression of protest and style. Banksy may not be the best graffiti artist out there, but he has a kind of humour and brilliance to what he does. not only he is not among the best . his ¨art¨ (more like free, easy publicity) is absolutely mediocre. no much talent is needed to use spray on templates. his concepts are basic af. no subtlety, nothing really original nor complex. they are designed so they can even be understood by a toddler. he's probably not even an artist, but one of those rich guys hidden behind an annon figure to see everyone this ¨rebel against capitalism¨narrative, while he sells his merch, gets free publicity on the streets and internet and people really fall for it. ridiculous.
The auction was a prepared show, it's a win-win for both Bansky and the auctioneers: more publicity for him, a higher price on the piece. Auctions look at every detail on the pieces they sell in order to ensure they are original. there's no way they didn't know about the mechanism.

I love the idea no one knows who he is. And that nobody wants to know!... I love Banksy's work. It questions real life in an accessable way and is understandable without an art history degree.. Wish I had one...

As an artist myself, I have always been amazed by graffiti art, even though I can't read it or make sense of it sometimes. It's like abstract art, I have no idea what it is depicting, but I can still appreciate the time, effort, and thought that another human being poured into creating it. I always try to do the best job possible with my commissions, since people are giving me their hard earned money, I am absolutely going to give them the best art I can produce, even if I am a digital artist. My family tells me I should charge more money since I put a lot of time into my work, but if I did that I would only be able to sell my art to rich people. 😅
I agree with you up to a point. But, as an artist who has had success in the distant past, and who is now struggling to get sales, lowering my prices for all the hard work, time, money, effort, years of training, years of knowledge, expertise, and talent, I don't mind that someone who loves my art will have to pay me a bit more than it cost me to produce it. Having bills to pay, just like them, it costs me, and therefore, them, so that we can all get what we need in a world that truly, as sad as this truth may be, revolves around money. I even figured that if I wanted to live my life off-grid somewhere in some remote place on the map, I still need money just to go and do that. It's crazy, but that's just how human society works. We're the only species on the planet that has to PAY to live ON our planet, exception ... indigenous peoples who are still living in the most remote places on earth, and, even their existence is being threatened by capitalist greed. In the meantime, I have to be a capitalist to some extent, or I won't be able to survive in the "modern?" part of the world where I reside.

but put some cans in my hand and people ask why i dont have a sketch book.
I'm an artist as well, but I'm really not a fan of graffiti, especially on older buildings, which to me are art in themselves. Seeing it on the sides of trains doesn't bother me and gives me something to watch while it passes by, but the longer I think about it, I think my real problem with it is the common graffiti font. It's just... janky. All bubble-fucked and goofy-looking. It has a plastic, 80s style that irks the hell out of me.
I can't draw or paint even with normal pencil/brush.. 😂
The Israeli art was absolutely phenominal. That's when banksy really won my heart 🌞

Grafitti has existed for millennia, though. It wasn't created in the 20th century. People have been leaving their mark on buildings - including some with social and political commentary - since before the Roman Empire. It's just something humans do.

Just to SEE a GenUine Banksy would be my dream come true…this is my favourite artist of all time. Living in New Zealand I guess there’s almost zero chance of this ever happening…I don’t have to own the world or a Banksy…there’s so much pleasure derived from sitting and enjoying the company of what you love…just for a while.

Like Muhammad Ali for boxing , micheal Jordan for basketball , Banksy has been for art on the global scale. Personally I know more people who more than likely would’ve never grown to have any interest in art on any level , upon learning about Banksy and his art and his story they became fans first of Banksy but now appear to be genuine fans of art ! If the contribution of Banksy in the end is limited to making love of art more widespread many people might see that as nothing significant but I happen to see that as a pretty wonderful thing!
Of stencil art? Not a single artist I have ever met has a career in art because they liked some 90s stencil art made by banksy.

just at the beginning seeing the prank . this person is hilarious , smart and knows about art and even its a easy picture , he gave it emotion by scaring the shit out of all people on the floor like as if the red balloon had popped . legend . value is endless at this point .

Banksy is on another level, far outstripping the average "Graffiti artist". His work is interesting and provocative, not just letters scrawled over someone else's property.
Yeah....he did well the way social media artists do well. By making art that isn't that great but making sure there is a big story around it.

Style Wars was the bible, I literally watched it every single night before going out. The scene that had the most influence on me was when they showed the pics of Dondi bracing himself between the subway cars in order to reach the top. Once I saw that it taught me to look at any possible way to get to the top of things.
Overrated
After reading all the individual legends in art history from Renaissance grandmaster to till minimalist masters.. being as an art student m so glad to be part of his Era where he is posting his artworks on social platforms and how the social media helping us to communicate with each other.

For nothing other than being true to yourself. Lots of us know how hard that can be. Words cannot remotely come close to a suitable defining description of what this idea takes. But art dies. A picture is worth way more than a thousand words. It is infinite in its ability to share a multitude of stories in a finite space. Even though I'm sure it's just as hard today as it was yesterday. Stay the course. Just as I'm sure you already know. There's so much more at stake, then some scrap pieces of paper and bits of metal. Our history, our truths, and yes maybe even our salvation.

Multiple people at Sotheby’s had to know about

Because they do a lot of homework for authenticity and examination of the art and the background of how it was obtained and how many people have owned it before Sotheby’s got it in their possession way before it even goes to auction
So the idea that “nobody” knew about the shredder underneath the painting before it went up to auction is complete bullshit

1:07:00 girl with balloon was not a one off it was made and sold several times… I doubt Sotheby’s did much more than confirm authenticity with a representative of or banksy himself. Despite having that option, banksy experts might not be abundant so evaluating it might not be as strict as a Van Gogh.

I really hate tagging, but, I love good street art. Art with a message is true art, on a wall or in an exhibition.
I lived in Bristol for years, every year the streets were closed in the middle of town and scaffolding put up for the graffiti artists to put up new woks on the buildings for the Bristol "Love saves the day" music festival. Some really great works.

Having been a writer since the early 90’s and seeing Banksy’s traditional pieces in the old graff mags and watching as he turned his focus to stencils and then hearing my wife’s mom say “have you heard of this Banksy guy? He’s crazy”

I think he’d be a good artist on Twitter, he’s good with the memes and political stuff but that’s about it. Imagine being in a museum of the greats one day, just staring into canvases for hours looking between the layers admiring the craftsmanship as the painting itself tells you the story. And then you walk by a piece of banksy’s, just very dull and seems as if it was rushed, it doesn’t have that sense of accomplishment or pride. And without the captions It’d just be a piece of clip art.
If you look at humans as a whole we think that we can always do better, but maybe he’s saying that’s not true. Maybe we’re already at our best and we should just appreciate what we got instead of trying to use money and influence as our problem solvers.
Waiting for a train crossing the road was, to me, an opportunity to see a traveling art show. Others would complain and I'd say, LOOK at it. These are talented people that don't have a voice except for this canvas.

I had no idea until many years later. And the pieces came together and it all made sense.

Exit is just a promotional film for Thierry. They turned it into a big joke, by focusing on a filmmaker. It worked though, Thierrys art sells for big bucks, and he doesn't have a single original thought when it comes to art
Banksy has always been the King of the Public Visual Arts. Like Elvis he iscreating his own hugely authentic and refined Genre ... His motivation goes places where no other has gone and no other can. I can't equate Banksy's artistry in any way to the motivation and savagness of today's runaway "graffiti".
Would he have bothered if there was no Internet and all the forms of communication that go with it? Is he just the greatest marketer of all time?

Banksy started years before the internet was a common and easily accessible resource though.
Some people on my local university plastic art faculties seem to think and s publicly expose not only their dismissal but plain disgust and bare hate on Banksy (mainly because it's popularity they argue) as if that attitude was somewhat dignifying for their own productions or careers. I've seen my share of art, every day I found the most original, genuine and paradigm breaking works somehow come from the people who aren't that obsessed with credit. I salute and admire Banksy's work without falling in the promiscuous antiquated rhetorical academicist trap neither: his art is challenging and inviting. his influence? undeniable. His proposal has more reach than formal traditional art- I feel his bottom statement is that art is an universal language. Be brave express yourself and LIVE as a declaration of war to inertia, act like a poetic disease to this mad society. Life is threatening, daring to live to express yourself freely it's scary, are you going to hide or what?
Exceptional information, Thank you. Much love for this man. The world could benefit from more people with the heart of an artist. I can respect his decision to avoid the spotlight and the demand that comes with it. In that same vein the focus can remain on letting his art do the talking.

I personally don’t care for him. But my opinion obviously means nothing to him and it shouldn’t, he’s the artist. Some ignorant comments on here from people who think just because they don’t understand something, it validates their opinions. Might be worth putting the time in to understand why art has become conceptual and why artists who were the first to do what they did have made history by changing our idea of what art is. I don’t appreciate all conceptual art, but I think the world would be a boring place if we didn’t have different tastes and we were just trying to make everything realistic or aesthetically pleasing.

One of my favorite surfer/skater/street artists who has since evolved and is, sadly, struggling to pay his bills right now is a friend of mine named Jantzen Peake who used to live in Southern California, near Los Angeles. My wife and I met him at an arts and crafts fair in Redondot Beach about seventeen years ago and he had a small, color pencil drawing that just blew my wife and I away with the intense colors and his wild, bizarre, and intensely vivid imagination, that we bought it on the spot. We still have this small piece of art which we had framed, because he didn't even have the money to frame it, which is typical of many artists, which is even sometimes typical for my own art, but, anyway, we have purchased several of his pieces which adorn our apartment here in Chattanooga, Tennessee. People always comment on his art when they visit us.
He can definitely do with some support as an artist. He lives in Colorado Springs and teaches local art classes, but, he's been dog-walking and scrounging up whatever kind of small gig jobs he can get just to try and stay afloat. You can find him on Instagram and Facebook. He always takes commissions and is always grateful for the patronage.
