  • The lucky New Zealande couple trusted their instincts and purchased two supposed Banksy canvases for $120 USD from a street art stall in New York.
The couple knew the art was the real deal, when a video of the purchase turned up on the official Banksy website. The artwork was then sold at auction in the UK fetching just shy of $200,000.

It's a funny quality of human opinion that I would 100% disagree with you. A mind as visionary as Banksy might certainly have hoped that they would do exactly as they have. Her lack of poisonous cynicism in in an ugly world full of it has afforded her and her husband a better life than they would have had. It's very likely that he would have desired that for the right people. You should remember that Banksy has demonstrated time and time again that he doesn't believe that the inherent value is "in" his art but rather in the human experience.

That's bullshit because everybody, even that couple, would assume it would have been a replica. The street seller saying it is original would be something every street seller would say. They bought it because they liked it and when it turned out to be real they sold it and kept replicas. which is basicly what they expected to have bought in the first place (and is just as good as the real thing, even according to banksy.)
If they didn't like it in the first place, why even keep replica's.

I live outside nyc and I remember banksy painting stuff around the city. I heard about these paintings being sold for thirty or sixty bucks on the street. I could kick myself for not going with my gut and traveling down and buying one. There were much more than those two in fact being sold.

You know what I don't like about this, it's always about value. Nobody reports on art because it took effort or because it is good or because it's a particularly clever piece. Let the news dumb it down until people think it's just empty bullshit that gets sold for unbelievable amounts of money. This whole money laundering thing has really hurt the representation of art in the 20th and 21st century.

They did what banksy also wanted when he posted this quote up. “Art should make us feel more clearly and more intelligently. It should give us coherent sensations that we otherwise would not have had. But the price of a work of art is now part of its function, its new job is to sit on the wall and get more expensive. Instead of being the common property of human kind the way a book is, art becomes the particular property of somebody who can afford it. Suppose that every worthwhile book in the world cost $1 million - imagine what a catastrophic effect on culture that would have.” - Robert Hughes

Personally myself, I would have kept them. Banksy was an inspiration for me. Loved his work, loved his hidden messages in his pieces. Even if the money could have change my life at a point, having a piece of art from the person I admire and even tried to copy in my younger years. No way would I have exchange them for money. I would have proudly hang it on the wall and tell people it came directly from the person I looked up too. That's just me.

I think yes...it proved Banksy's point but unlike other people that just buy art pieces to collect or to say I sold the pieces for the hell of it. They recognized the opportunity to bring themselves a peace of mind. I don't think they regret selling the pieces. They loved the pieces but they loved their relationship more. Which is worth more? Art to hang in your house or your relationship? They chose the peace it would bring to buy a new home for themselves. In that case Banksy might be happy...because of his work, a couple don't need to worry about saving up for a house anymore. Of course I don't speak for Banksy but if my art brought a person happiness that would mean the world.

It could be that Art that recognisable is often forged and copied so I don’t blame people for thinking it wasn’t really Banksy’s work and to just keep walking I’ve seen lots of imitations of his stuff before its value doesn’t depend on art gallery its value depends upon being able to prove that it’s really a Banksy. It gained its value when Banksy confirmed they where his pieces.
Hope this makes sense I’m dyslexic.

Years ago they put a Picasso on the railings at Green Park in London and the asking price was £25,000 just to see if anybody would be interested in buying it with the result a man came up and asked how much the painting was ? when told he said O.K i will buy it. Peter Ustinov was the man fronting the sale on the railings.

Should have kept it as a family heirloom, but I understand why they gave it up. They do take a lot of upkeep and security... I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at people finding his art "thought provoking" though considering Muse is still a massively popular band lmao. We really do live in a society, huh?
