So although she loved them she didn't want to spend her life stressing about owning them. The sale fetched around NZ$200K so just over US$100k about a year or two ago. Based on that he'd possibly get US $200k for them.

      @@sandraunterthiner9763 Leo is making the EXACT point. The point being most people did not buy anything assuming they were fake. Only those who enjoy the art regardless of its "worth" bought it, and bought it purely because they like it. No art critics or "art investors", but fans.... It shows that most people who claim to love Banksy are just jumping on the bandwagon because it's in-vogue, they don't really care that much for the content.

      @@Stoatfacelanust It's now seven years later. It would be interesting to find out what happened to the paintings that were sold here. Did the people realize what they purchased? Did they hold on to the paintings? Did they try to sell them when they realized they might be able to make a hefty profit? Did Bansky (or the art world) ever acknowledge them as legit? If they sold, what did they sell for? Inquiring minds want to know! (Not that it matters, of course. Banksy clearly made his point here.)

    Everybody on here is missing the point. Banksy did this to prove a point that without the art world hyping up an artist and rich people bidding up the price, people don't know how to recognize art, or think for themselves at all for that matter. Without the bullshit "recognition" that the media and the art world provides in general, people are not able to distinguish good art from bad art. Banksy knew that this would happen, and that was the whole point of this exhibit. This whole facade selling art was an artwork in itself because is completely illuminates that most people don't think for themselves anymore, they value things almost exclusively based on the respect that other people give them; not on their own opinions.

      For those who are interested on what happened next a news article here in NZ stated the NZ woman went on gut instinct believing they were genuine Banksy works after asking the vendor and being told 'yup', and a few other clues. She also claims to have talked the man from Chicago into buying as well (he must have gone to get cash out like she did - hence the time lag). She stated she was flying back to NZ that day after packing up their home in New York following her husband who'd left on an earlier flight and she only had enough American cash left to buy two canvases. Although she loved them, she finally sold them a year or so back because she couldn't get insurance to cover them without extra security measures.

Similarly if they are showing coverage from a sporting event do you think they need to get permission from the dozens of fans they might appear on a news report.

    Not trying to sound like a greedy fuck but each of those paintings are worth anywhere from $50,000 -$250,000 and they're being sold for 60 a piece and no one even notices. I would have noticed his work in an instant and I would have bought the whole fucking kiosk.

    • @alannahhurley386
      @alannahhurley386 Před 8 lety +4

      You would have notice his work in an instant?? Really??? How would you have known it wasn't fake?? And saying you would have just known isn't realistic. Anyone can easily fake works of art. Also the canvas were just spray paint and stencil, that's fairly easy to copy. I know for a fact that I would have though that the old man was just trying to make a quick buck off the hype that was all around New York at the time and would've probably ignored the sale, like everyone else.

    • @ericmcclain1869
      @ericmcclain1869 Před 8 lety +1

      Alannah Hurley Yes, I would have noticed in a heartbeat; mainly because I follow him on instagram and he posted this just as it was being setup. I live too far away and I do not know anyone that lives in NY so it would have been impossible for me to get one unless I were there.

    • @alannahhurley386
      @alannahhurley386 Před 8 lety +1

      +I Don't Have Man Boobs (erislaton) no Banksy posted about the canvas sale the day after it happened. Like he did 2 works in one day, one was a graffiti of some sort and the other was this. Only did he post about the canvas sale the next day, as the work of art of the day.

    The point here for all you followers is that no one cares until it is praised and recognized as "a work of art by the beloved Banksy". Banksy did this as his work of art. Showing how simple the average person can be. How many followers does he have on social media? Mostly young dumb adults who only follow him because he has become the posterboy for street art and they want to show that they're cool. If there were no advertising only a few would be able to understand the motive.
