  • Cândido Godói is a village of 7,000 inhabitants in the south of Brazil that has a phenomenal number of twin births.
    The rate is ten times higher than the national average, and no one knows why.
    A team of geneticists have been working with the community for a number of years, sampling DNA and learning about families, in an effort to solve the mystery.
    BBC News went to meet some of the twins and hear more about the village's history.

    Twins are more likely to have twins themselves or their children have twins someday. So if two pair of twins marry each other there is a very high possibility of having twins. I wonder how many people have moved to this village from somewhere else. If the village was built from 15-20 families and not many strangers moved in they have a very small blood line

    • @Iamperson-vm5zb

      Only fraternal twins are more likely to have twins but identical twins and the same chance as someone who is not a twin to have twins .

    • @lampshade1304
      @lampshade1304 Před 5 lety +18

      There might be a genetic factor that hasn't been identified yet. If so, this just seems like the founder effect.

    • @bbby8972
      @bbby8972 Před 5 lety +11

      Fraternal twins come from the mother, as she produces multiple eggs. The multiple ovulation gene can be PASSED DOWN from a father to a daughter, but he himself cannot 'force' a woman to ovulate multiple times in one cycle. Therefore, two parents who are twins themselves does not increase the chance of multiples more than it already would have been increased by just the mother being a twin. It is also different with identicals.

    The fact that they're all mostly identical twins suggests the cause is maternal in origin since identical twins split from a singular fertilized egg

    • @rursus8354

    • @SapphireX413
      @SapphireX413 Před 5 lety +24

      @@rursus8354 It's basically the only logical option. There is nothing a father can do to influence the chance of having twins, identical or fraternal. Identical twins aren't caused by genetics (supposedly), and fraternal twins are either caused by total chance or maternal family history. Mitochondrial DNA could offer an explanation here as it only carries the maternal DNA. Just my thoughts on the subject

    The same x-chromosome is passed from mother to daughter (and preserved through generations), so it is possible that in a closed community a mutated x-linked gene would be amplified. This could be further boosted by the fact that the gene results in two carriers being born vs any other variation of the x-chromosome (positive evolutionary selection pressure). This gene could have removed any other x-chromosome variations from the gene pool over a few generations.

    This is nothing, the number and percentage of twin births in igbo-ora in Nigeria astronomically dwarfs this town both in number and percentage.
    And has been Confirmed by Indian jornal of Human genetics, business insider, a study done by PLOS ONE, AFP, Los Angeles times etc all did different independent studies which all affirms this and more.

      Chuck there are two Trumps but not twins it was achieved with plastic surgery. Botching the hair in exactly the same way was difficult. Just like there are two Nicole Kidmans. The real Nicole has an entirely different face structure if you are paying attention she does the plays in London. The other one is married to a country and western singer and used for interviews, press and the bad movies. You can't make this shit up.
