- Far from the bustling capital of Buenos Aires in Argentina lies Bariloche, a scenic resort town that feels like it was pulled right out of the Swiss Alps, or maybe Austria. German settlers arrived here in large numbers in the early 1900’s, and they were later followed by a more questionable group of immigrants - Nazis fleeing prosecution after World War 2. All of the most prominent Nazi commanders and scientists came here, some if only for a brief period. There was even a conspiracy that Hitler himself escaped here.
I decided I would have to look into this a bit more -- and I was quite surprised by what I found.

My grandpa was a nazi/fascist supporter from Brenner ( i believe its somewhere in the austrian/italian border nowdays) - As far as my family history goes, he escaped europe after WW2, went to Argentina, and then when rumours that they were looking for nazis for war crimes, he moved to Costa Rica - i never knew him but it's crazy how far those guys travel to escape from their past - Anyway ... Hi from Costa Rica 😅🤘

In 2010, I went to high school with a boy whose grandfather was a Nazi. I'm not exactly sure what he did but it was never a secret and everyone in town knew it. I live in a little town in rural Argentina so everyone one knows each other. They used to call him "El Aleman" (The German).
My grandparents are Polish and knew this nazi guy very well and strangely enough, they had a good relationship!

The casual way this guy drops knowledge and interacts with people is just different. He literally just popped up in a former nazi hub, used conspiracy books at a local shop as reference, and went straight to the nazis daughter in law. Then found a few strangers to form a group to go visit a former nazi bunker. And all of that in Spanish, his second language. This guy is a humble (social) genius

For so long,i have been looking the same exact words to describe him.He is very well informed and knowledgeable and dishes facts in a very casual manner which is a good contrast.He has visited kenya my country severally and speaks pure Swahili.He has a way of immersing himself into other people's cultures very easily.I think he was preparing himself for this channel since he was young by learning other languages.

As a german i have to say its really astounding how "german" the manerisms and even the way she emphasizes her sentences are! its crazy. she reminds me of the old lady we have as a neighbor
All those things come in the genes, I have a friend who met his father only after he was 30 and surprisingly they both had the same mannerism and way of saying things even though they never met for 30 years!

When I lived in Argentina in the early 1980s, I met a handful of unrepentant Nazis. I spoke with them at length, multiple times over dinner and/or Mate'. I was fascinated by their life experience and perspective. Generally speaking, the people I spoke with were melancholy about how Europe was negatively affected by Germany's loss and the ascendancy of Bolshevism. They all made a good life in Argentina. Thank you for the video. It brought back so many memories.
I found some in Buenos Aires too. No repent of any kind. They didn't deny what they did.

There was a guy, my father talked to him once, who said: "in 1944 we put out corpses from their graves in Poland and burnt them with flamethrowers" and this man, a SS corporal, didn't show any kind of regret.

I liked this video! I'm argentinian, i live on the coast of Buenos Aires and i remember that when I was younger my mother had a co-worker who was the grandson of Nazis, here there is a lot of countryside and several Germans settled in ranches very far from the towns.
Of course the natzi settled. Far away from town s not to drew attention to themselves. They stole a lot of gold and art to live off of it …
Just reading a novel by Joseph Kanon called The Accomplice set in 1962 Argentine, about Nazis that fled to there. So seeing some of the places mentioned in the book here in your excellent vlog is very interesting indeed.
Sabbatical is more educated and intelligent than all other vloggers out there. He knows about history, gives interesting info about the country he is in.

I myself have traveled alot, my father took me to sumba in indonesia when i was 15, and since then I have traveled the eastern world. I am still missing antarctica and northern sibir, africa + south america. I am planning going to Kenya ASAP, I need some vitamine D for my immune system.

I used to work at the computer lab in college in Buenos Aires, the animation teacher was supervisor there and I got to know him a little in a few years, he came from a german family, he told me ever since he was little, he remembered a stand filled with nazi plates, cups, silverware, he wasnt allowed to touch or ask about it at the time, but soon he figured it out.
Oh god. I can only imagine what his mind went through the moment the light bulb turned on.
And those victims are doing the geno©ide themselves. They hold the real power hiding behind the veneer of victimhood

There is also another city of German immigrants called Villa General Belgrano. During the 1940s the town had an important boost with the arrival at the site of 125 crew members of the German armored ship Admiral Graf Spee. Most of the sailors belonged to the ship's technical staff, with which they mastered a wide range of trades. the sailors managed to integrate into the small community that already had German immigrants.

I'm Argentinian and i didn't know a lot of stuff that you talked about in the video, i've never been to bariloche and it was really nice learning stuff from other parts of my country. Also i'd like to thank you for not picturing all of the Argentinians who live in Bariloche as Nazis because i know that a lot of people from around the world see Argentina only as a Nazi refugee place or a country where nazi culture affected a lot, when the nazi culture isn't really alive and the nazis for what i know tried to lay low in the country. In Argentina you would find the same amount of Neonazis that you would expect to find anywhere in the world (very few and sick people) really like your channel! (sorry for any english errors)

Interesting Video! Bariloche looks super nice. Actually like Old Germany with better weather :D My neighbor is an Argentinian / German. There were always sayings that his family were Nazis who fleed to Argentina. I talked to him about his past. He said he was vorn in Bariloche, lived there for 20 years and grew up wit 800 Nazis. His parents were from the Netherlands and Germany. My peruvian wife is always laughing when he passes our apartment and hears him screaming Spanish insults haha
I live in San Carlos de Bariloche and consider it the most beautiful city of the planet . There is so much to do here that you would need years to discover all the secrets of this amazing city . Bariloche today has become the centre of Argentina it seems as the pandemic has changed peoples attitudes and everyone wants to now live in Bariloche . The province of Rio Negro is drop dead gorgeous with the best beaches of Argentina and natural scenery . I also like to say that the food here is superb with great local dishes and incredible forest fruits from El Bolson . Love it all !

This is one of the most impressive pieces of investigative journalism I've ever seen. Finding that family, getting hitchikers to go see the bunker, then finishing it with some great cusine and music. So entertaining.
Back in 97, I was traveling either through Chile or Argentina. I remember coming across a small town and it looked and feel like what I imagined a small little German town would look and feel like if I was in Germany. For a small town somewhere in South America, I felt it was very strange and out of place.
The only time I was ever in Germany was like 2014.
After watching a few documentaries on Nazis and CZcams videos like this one, I knew I wasn't going crazy.

I‘m German and my grandfather‘s cousin or brother (don’t remember) also fled to Argentina after WW2! Now there’s more people living kn Argentina with my last name than here in Germany. I was a missionary in Córdoba Argentina for two years. One of my areas was Villa General Belgrano. It was a little German town, like a mini version of Bariloche. There were rumors of Nazis back in the day that settled it, but now it’s just a beautiful tourist town. I loved it.

It's more than a rumor. The crew from the Graf Spee that was sunk during the battle of the River Plate ended up living in that area. The captain killed himself in Buenos Aires. I don't really know what they would have expected us to do? Execute them? Jail them? We weren't officially at war. Their ridiculous beliefs eventually were watered down with the following generations.

Thankyou for this. I have always been fascinated about the history of Germany in Argentina. My parents took my brother and I to Bariloché when I was about 4 or 5 and I have very vivid memories of seeing the swiss influence houses and a lot of Saint Bernard dogs everywhere. It was so beautiful...

Really?I’m American but haven’t visited Lake Tahoe. I was in NV recently but only from Salt Lake city down to Las Vegas.
@@SMoore-vj7bt Absolutely. The majority of Nevada is desert, as you saw in Vegas. However, in northern central Nevada, along the California border, there are alpine forests surrounding Lake Tahoe- which is shared by both states. There are a number of towns on the lake that have a similar alpine vibe. It’s a pretty magical place.

As far as I know, being an argentinian myself, you can find the german DNA heritage mostly in the mesopotamic provinces that are in the north east of the country (Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Ríos). Bariloche is a small city in a southern province called Río Negro, but yes, it is predominantly german and swiss, and has very good chocolates too.

My wifes uncle lived in bariloche for many years, we visited a number of times, its a fantastically beautiful place and i highly recommend it as a destination.

The bunker is weird, I think it can be a possibility. Amazing country, really beautiful. It´s look a bit like Canada or the USA sometimes. Also funny to see the German architecture. But also German/Nort America styl houses, like the house in the background at 12:51. It wish you checked that out!
