  • In the past few decades, one city in Argentina has begun to develop a rather unsavory reputation for criminality. Rosario, which connects the north of Argentina to Buenos Aires through the Parana River, is actually a fairly beautiful city. But as with many places, there are two different sides to it. On the outskirts was a very different city, and on this day I would go to see what was there.

The paco in Argentina is the drug of the poor. The couple in the abandoned house there are drug addicts. Rosario is the city with the worst crime rates in the country. Most of the deaths are from drug gang fights. Many of those who end up dead are young boys from the poor neighborhoods of Rosario. It is not advisable to get into a poor neighborhood without a local guide. It's not a dangerous city compared to other parts of Latin America but it's dangerous by the standards of developed countries.

its not just drugs either, ultimately, its attention and dopamine. marketing and the cult of the individual, a false hope/dream. giving you pleasure/relief with one hand, robbing you of discipline with the other. The real swindle starts with corruption at the higher level, the movers and shakers of a society/city. its the human problem of community, everything is good when people are all pushing in the same direction, but when the direction of life is turning, the motivations change, resource deficiencies, desperation, the waters of acceptability become muddied and people get stuck - in the mud.

I like the respectful and open-minded way you approached them though, even though they lied to you I believe showing them love is always the way to go, if nothing else at least to improve their sense of self respect. A lot of addiction is fuelled by unhappiness which a lot of the time comes from a lack of self worth (eg. due to trauma)

The way Tommy can read people is crazy. He has people coming up to him all the time asking for money, or food or whatever. A lot of people he turns down. He legitimately can't help everyone, but it's like he can instantly tell who would push things too far. He's able to go into the worst places and spot the person, who's probably a fairly decent person deep down, to spend a few dollars on and get a tour guide and a bodyguard. Pretty cunning the way he uses them and helps them at the same time. A little display of strength with the chin ups, but in a playful manner, shows he's strong enough to be a problem if things go sideways. At the end, making it clear he wants to help that guy's "daughters" by swapping information, instead of just handing over wads of money, was incredibly shrewd.

lol drug addicts are frail human beings.. If they don't have their dope a 13 year old could beat their asses. I used to be addicted to opiates so I can say this. Dope addicts are pathetic humans, this is why the majority of homeless people just sit on corners and beg ppl for money, they don't go out and physically harm people, because their bodies more than likely aren't even able. They can't afford guns, they would just sell them. He would be in more danger by the people who distribute the drugs than the ppl taking them. And to make something clear, when I say "pathetic" I just mean they have no strength, their bodies are so frail from doing drugs, and being strung out on them, most of the time if an addict doesn't have their fix they can't even stand up and move much. I don't actually think of addicts as pathetic in the sense that I don't like them. It's just a fact. I have lots of sympathy for those who are stuck in the loop of drug addiction.

Rosario has a very particular geography: there's a "safe zone", which is the city center (both micro and macro), where Tommy's hotel is.
In the center, you may find nice bars, museums, shops and monuments and, as I said, it's the least dangerous place in Rosario (and the most "modern" looking).
However, here's the thing, the city center is surrounded on all sides by dangerous neighborhoods: northwards, southwards, westwards, there's none eastwards since the Parana River lays east. Tommy only visited North Hood, which is definitely not the most redflaggish place in Rosario, buuuut it might raise some alarms going through there, just as y'all saw in this video.
West Hood is.. kind of okay, the deeper you go west the most problematic it might become, but South Hood is veeeeeery dangerous, because there's where all the narco bunkers are, so tons of massacres and shootings happen once in a while, not a very nice place to go for a walk. And east is only dangerous if you don't know how to swim.
If you're a foreigner and you ever plan to visit Messi's hometown, never leave the City Center, and even there keep your eyes always open. Source: lived in Rosario for 7 years.

The dude that took you to his "home" was a drug addict. Even tho he treated you well, you could have encountered someone that lured you to his home and robbed you. As an Argentinian I saw that a bit risky, but at the same time you can see that not all people are bad in a dangerous neighborhood. It's really a shame that people in need end up in the drug addiction way. The scene with Miguel's wife holding the paco spoon was pretty sad tbh

Rosario was a wonderful city like 25 / 30 years ago. The city was relatively small compared to today. Everything changed with free universities and more people setting their homes in the city. Rosario started to grow faster than expected and that caused a real state boom that brought a lot of people from poor provinces to the city as well as students.
Back in the days you were able to walk the streets on broad daylight without a problem but had to be careful during nights. The funny thing about it.. is that most robbers had codes. They didn't rob on their neighborhoods and if you acted calm, they would take the wallet and leave without other issues.
I walked the entire city, from the richest and beautiful places to the most abandoned and poor places (Villas) nobody messed with you as long as you didn't mess with them.
With Drugs moved to nearly every corner of the city, things have changed a lot... now criminals not only robs you but shoot you and kill you if you try to talk or even sometimes, they shoot you because they are so desperate for drugs they can't even think straight.
First it was cocaine in Rosario and paco in Buenos Aires, now Rosario has everything.
Politicians tried to reduce violence by closing clubs earlier not allowing gas stations to sell alcohol and increasing controls ended up putting the city on a state of hibernation. The city is empty at night and criminals roam it.

Man, this video gave me that feeling I haven't had for years... It's that spooky moment when you realize you just walked into something real and potentially dangerous. Happened to me a few times while travelling, maybe you have a light buzz going and you're meeting new people, you let your guard down a little because it feels familiar. But then that warm feeling freezes over into something a little unsettling, maybe even a little scary. You suddenly become very aware of just how vulnerable you are. You don't really know the people you're with, you don't even really know where you are, and maybe this is exactly the horror stories you've heard about.

You're so crazy man, I wouldn't even like to walk there, not even in the afternoon, mostly because there's a lot of robbers and stuff. _I mean, it wasn't the worst pleace but definitely you got luck that all the people that you met were nice to you because you were filming them. xd
Still I really admire that you have the balls to go to different places that are not the main attractions in Rosario and show the real city, this is what it actually looks like most of the times. And im telling you, if it was at night, most probably you wouldn't have your camera right now.
As you can see there's a lot of poverty and if most people tell you that it's not safe to walk around, trust them, its not safe. But well I hope you had enjoyed your staying here, I didn't know your channel otherwise _I would be happy to show you a little bit more of the city.

I know your tour guide was a drug user, however, him and his wife live a heart breaking life which is a disease, maybe one day, they can clean up and get their kids back (if they really do have kids). That was really nice of you to offer their kids help and send it to a bank account & not give them the money of course. I have heard from Argentinian friends that it’s really bad their in certain areas, just like other South American countries & the US has some dangerous areas as well. I like your videos, I've been watching some of them lately.
This is very very dangerous to do. The kind of people like that man that "guided" you is the people you should avoid at all costs. They are mostly drug addicts. If they like you, they won't harm you but you do anything to enrage them, and they could steal your things or hurt you.
You can distinguish those people by their looks. So be really careful, they are drug addicts. I knew from the first moment, and when he asked you for money I already knew it was for drug. Please don't do this again it's really dangerous. You could get in trouble just by staying next to them. Drug addicts tend to get killed by drug sellers because some of them don't pay. Yea, they might be walking in a sunny day in the street, a bike pass by and they get killed by multiple shot..... and if you are with them you could also get hurt.
It's super endearing of you wanting to know the cultures, but getting involved with those people is something you don't want to happen.

Holy Shee-ite! I was scared for you several times. It's like visiting the dark side of LAX or CHI. Not only would I not go there during the day - or night - but especially not with a GoPro on a stick! It's like carrying around a flag that says "ROB ME"!!! Brave Indeed.

The guy was being nice even thought they have drug addiction, he spent time showing him around and trying to keep him safe. He deserves money i think even if he was gonna buy drugs with it. Dude is gonna get money 1 way or another and the other way might not be as pleasant.

When the locals tell you to be careful. It's time to leave. People will kill you just for that camera. It's not just that city. Most cities have areas you should not mess around in.

Si, todas las ciudades de Latinoamérica, pero también lo repiten bastante porque no quieren que se lleven una mala imagen del país, no porque sea realmente peligroso (Que si bien hay zonas que si lo son, hay muchas las cuales no)

Ive been to many dangerous cities and lived in a few. You learn to cope and survive, and you realize thats what most everyone else in these places are doing. There are some dangerous people and bad things can happen, but it isnt the Purge movie people make it out to be.
