Cambodian here, actually because u are in the low season. People come to Cambodia in wave. Like Jan for new years. April for Khmer new year. But after the new years- people not here. It humid and extra hot. Rain a lots too and not many advertisement for this time of year, even though It actually the best time to visit. Also it’s the best season to be in the cold country- they are in perfect weather right now so probably enjoying their own weather. Angkor wat is huge. So it actually easy to find a quiet spot. The place you are in the back back- not many people will go there since it doesn’t have much to see. People mostly ignore it.

Tbh, the rest of neighboring countries are just as happy and relieved when Chinese "tourists" drop. Aside from being known as being rowdy, annoyingly noisy, demanding, and mostly unhygienic tourists across, flocks of these what turned out to be "espapees" are known across Asia to engage in illegal activities, i.e. gambling, scamming, interfering with local politics for their protection, to name a few.

Three years ago I went to the Congo for my job and had exactly the same experience as you. It was my first African country, so I feel that African country is absolute madness. After six months, I crossed the same border into Zambia. It was mind-blowing. Only 10km from the border, but the complete opposite world. The people weren't threatening, the police weren't asking for bribes, the roads were clean, the food was cheap and delicious. I would never go back to the Congo, but I would love to go to Zambia. During my six months in Lubumbashi I was once arrested on false charge, almost robbed twice, had my life threatened twice and at least two locals I knew died. One of them was killed. In any case, I would advise you to be very careful and if possible not to go to Congo. NEVER.

I'd read an article where it said that chinese people especially women and children were kidnapped, trafficked and/or scammed to come to Cambodia and only to have them to be forcefully work in sex industry, drug mules or worse harvested their organ.
