Inside The "North Korea" of Africa 🇪🇷: How It Really Is (

- You may not have heard of this country, but perhaps you’ve seen it by another name: “the North Korea of Africa”. But that doesn’t quite tell the full story. There’s nowhere like Eritrea in Africa, or in the world for that matter. It’s a place where everyone must serve in the military, a place where most people have never used the internet, and a place where people have to stay in their lane, or else. But it’s also a country of extremely friendly and welcoming people. It’s very safe, you can walk any street in the country without a care in the world. And it’s extremely beautiful-while also remaining relatively undiscovered by the outside world.
This was one of the trips I was most excited for. It took almost 2 months to secure the visa, but once I got it, I was on my way to Asmara, the capital. This is the record of my journey.

Eritrea! One of the hardest countries in the world to visit, I made it. Now it's time to make the most of it.
Hello from mendocino California
2nd and a like, greetings from Los Angeles!!
very interesting , thank you for the enlightening video
Greeting, from Ethiopia.
So there you are! Stay safe! A Mineola Fan
My God, the pharmacy belonged to my grandfather, the guy with the hat is my uncle. I grew up in that neighborhood in the 80s an 90s and left in 2000. Brings joy and sadness at the same time. It's bitter sweet but I still miss my home.
Wow. All of your family left?
@@eridon111come and develop your country don't stay for along in other countries your home need you🙏🙏
@josephmaina-vm1lc no one wants to leave their home and live in another man's country, but when the options are limited due to the policy, suppression, and iron fist ruling of the government, then you'll do whatever it takes to survive. I've seen so many of my peers thrown in prison for years for no justified reason with no due process, no trial no judge. You just get picked up and disappear. It's like playing russian roulette every day you wake up.
And then they will call you ከዳዓ for saying the truth@@eridon111

I love Eritreans, met a cool Eritrean guy and we spoke in Italian together. We talked about how Eritrea has the best pizza in Africa. Much love to Eritrean people may you prosper 🇪🇷
I am from Kampala and seeing the woman at 4:39 smile reminded me of all the lovely and friendly Eritrean refugees with have in Uganda (mostly Kampala). Despite their troubles, they somehow seem to remain happy and hopeful of the future.
6:38 A lot of Africa has no WiFi (some will argue) and I think this is somewhat good as most people/kids can enjoy life the old way by interacting in person. The downside is lack of exposure to the positive power of the internet.
I do not know if you have been to Djibouti but it is one of the countries (and Eritrea) that I would love to visit. I was briefly at the airport in Djibouti and it was easily one of the most depressing I have been to and the city was in the dark. It is sad how people live in abject poverty around the world.
13:39 If only streets across Africa (and the US in fact) were designed like this. Walkable, not crowded, lively.
15:35 She seems so friendly, I love the Eritrean people. This reminded me of all the local Eritrean shop owners in Kampala, their bread, and their tea.
27:03 Dude seems so passionate about the US lol but his story was rather sad in the end.

I'm from Boston and there are SO many Eritreans here. I went to high school with lots of them and had some Eritrean teachers, too. Always really sweet people, I've only had great experiences. I'm glad that my neighbor at 4:16 is bringing his kids up with both cultures.
They’re Ethiopians originally before a university dropout guy started a gurella war and broke away from Ethiopia. He’s been a president since 1993. They broke up from Ethiopia in 1991.
@@Toronto6 there was not a country called Ethiopia. It was an empire like the Romans but smaller. Imagine saying North Europe was Italian until they broke away.
I used to live in the USA and my coworker was an Eritrean celebrity. Despite no Americans caring about her at all, some Eritrean immigrants found her and started stalking the business and eventually she had to leave the job because of it.

@@Toronto6 you believe that Ethiopia is one of the few african countries which are not colonized, but Eritrea was colonized by many colonizers like the ottoman turks Egyptians Italians British for over 500 years and then in 1962 Eritrea should get its independence like libya and somalia but Americans and Europeans used their hegemony and connected Eritrea with Ethiopia by federation without the will of the eritrean people which led to the 30 years of armed struggle that freed Eritrea in 1991 by defeating the Ethiopian forces and officially declared its independence in 1993 after the people of Eritrea voted 99.9% infavour of independence in the UN observed referendum held April 1993, this is the truth you don't want others to know.

As an Ethiopian who was born and raised in Asmara, I can honestly say that this city is still one of my favorite places to live. Guys, there aren't many cities in the world that can match Asmara's beauty, elegance, and neatness.
Dear Sabbatical, I believe you ignored to visit and show some of the most important historical sites in Asmara, like the US Military Camp (Kagnew Station) and Traits A, B, C, and D, which were constructed by the US Government to maintain control over communication satellites covering the Middle East, Far East, African Horn of Africa
All the tracts are gone and Kagnew has been renamed Denden Camp.
Even though it has been replaced by Denden, Kagnew Station remains the place where we spent our childhoods and is still widely recognized by its previous name among all Ethiopians and Eritreans as well as the CIA itself.

My personal takeaways as a person recently been to Eritrea
- Super easy to go. I got my visa from the embassy in a few days and booked the flight and went ahead. Only thing is you need to register to the tourist office when you arrive.
- Everywhere is very very very safe. I was hanging in the middle of nowhere at 3-4 am and no one even turns around and looks at you. Super chill
- True, there is no internet or connectivity, however life is very slow paced. You low-key enjoy it
- Great food, smiling people, cheap prices for europeans, amazing sea (in Massawa), untold history
I would recommend. No need for clickbaits, good place to visit.

Let me correct you on prices of Taxi! You are mistaken saying “everybody is supposed to pay 10 Nkf ”. Certain direct lines are 10 Nkf on a shared taxi. You wanted to go to Bahti Meskerem , there is no “Meskel Square” that’s an Ethiopian area in Addis Abeba, which is off the direct line, and so that is what we call a “contract” price, and it is normally 70 Nkf and it can be more depending on the distance ! You could have taken a shared taxi for 10 Nkf, and got off at Piazza Michaele and walked about 4-5 blocks to Bahti Meskerem. The taxi driver could have taken straight to Bahti Meskerem private, but since you offered him 30 Nkf he had to make up the difference by picking up passengers going on the direct line service. So, the taxi driver ended up making 30 Nkf from you, and 30Nkf from the other three, and basically earned 60Nkf short 10.
Thanks dear for elaborating it.That is right, this guy thought that the taxi driver is cheating him because he is a foriegner. But he was right to tell him to pay 70 N.
Thank you for clarifying the doubt. We Eritreans will not cheat instead we give from our pocket

Superb. A real slice of a travel documented well. Enjoyed. 😀
Oh, happy New Year @sabbatical, and nice to see your posting. Greetings from the pearl of Africa, Uganda 🇺🇬.
thanks for doing this video. The last time I was in Eritrea was 2003/2004 and less people spoke english back then. Asmara looks pretty much unchanged since then!
I came to tanzania because of your videos and i love it 🎉🎉🎉
many tanzanians are racist against whites, so good luck
Yes don't judge book with its cover.
enjoy in my beautiful cauntry recpictful and helpfulpeople thank you bro for visiting my beloved country 🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷❤❤❤wel come peace in all world.
Great to watch another video of yours!
As a fellow Ethiopian , I love Eritrea ns .
The courage this dude has is different , I love your work and next time go with a tour guide who can speak the local language so that u can understand more about the people and culture .
Nice video. You should have given the shoe shine guy at least 5 Nakfas. He said it is for free because there is this general culture of refusing accepting money at first mention. Such kind of refusal for money, food and other offerings in all contexts is generally called 'skfta' in Tigrinya. Anyways, remember this next time.
I've been watching your videos for about 6 months, I love the humanity and history that you share of the places that you visit.
The way that people from all over the world react to you with such kindness, in spite of having nothing for themselves shows that we shouldn't judge people by their governments or the country that they were born in.
Bon Voyage! Hope to see you tour the Australian outback, Papua New Guinea, Torres Strait Islands one day.
An amazing and pretty well enjoyed glimpse of a country I always wanted to visit in East Africa. Very nice people wherever you meat them Eritreans. Thank you for the original style of reporting
It's like cuba because of western sections on Eritrea. But Eritrea has bright future.
Sunction against own people by the goverment you know if you want paint your house you have to get permission they dont allowed to built or rebuilt house everyone when become17 they force you to millitary for unlimited time
What bright future bro ?
Americans complain about immigration. People move away from their country's cause of lack of opportunities caused by embargo. It doesn't affect leaders, only regular population.
The problem is the dictatorship government. It's not america that wars with eritrean niegbours, or imprisoned all its citizens. Eritrea is finished. Thank you essais afwerki and your blind fan boys
Haha weak man never admit his weakness he makes excuses there is no any progress people are leaving their home country
I missed tommy boy! Greetings from Portugal!!!!!
Great video! It does seem like a pleasant and safe place to spend several days and interact with some very friendly people, despite the various deprivations. Not sure whether I’ll move Eritrea up any notches on my bucket list, but thanks for taking the time to put together this clear representation.
27:00 It’s really eye-opening to watch a video like this, where you get to hear from someone who has been through so much during a war. It’s a completely different world from what most of us know, and it really makes you think. The fact that you went out there, met this person, and shared his story with us is pretty amazing. It’s not every day you get to see life from such a unique perspective.Hope to make such impact with my vlogs one day!
