- Ethiopia, the pride of Africa. Home to an amazing and very distinct culture that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. And when you go to Ethiopia, top of the list on places to visit is Lalibela, the home of the rock churches. It's something that seems out of this world.
Unfortunately, Ethiopia is also to almost constant conflict. Civil wars, border disputes, you name it. When I arrived in the country, a new battle had just broken out -- between the FANO militia, representing the Amharas, and the Ethiopian government. Even more unfortunately, most of the best tourist sites in Ethiopia are in the Amhara region.
Including Lalibela. Welp, it was too late now. I wanted to see those churches.

What a flashback 😢 I lived in Ethiopia on and off from Yemen, I lost my wife at the Ethiopian/ Eritrean war in 1998. I left Ethiopia in 1991 during to tension between Mangestu and opposition parties. They were tanks rolling in Addis Ababa. Most of foreigners left, I lost contacts of my late wife until I got to USA then I heard the sad news about her. I’m Tanzanian/ Yemeni. Ethiopia is always in my heart . Beautiful country and great people 🇪🇹

I'm always proud of my Ethiopian heritage. not to brag because I’m Ethiopian but back in the day all Ethiopian people were very welcoming, generous, loving and very friendly, just like that little boy even if they don’t have anything they give you what they have. the spirit of sharing prevailed. Overall great content. As an Ethiopian origin living in the state for 15+ years, I understand the concern when the dad left the kid. Just to clarify, the dad left the kid to stay with you because the kid can help you incase if you lost your way back. It's a sign of respect and politeness. Most people do that not only for foreigners but also for someone who visits out side of the city.

My family knows a man who at 16 departed Ethiopia with his mother to England after engineering school he got the bug to become a doctor because of his mother getting cancer. Now in his 50's, an electrical engineer and a lead Doctor at a cancer center in Boston. It's all possible.

This was so moving. Many people don't know that many Ethiopians are devoted Christians. There are many ancient ruins from the times of Christ and before are there. It is considered the second Jerusalem. Notice how well mannered the children are and the politeness of if's people. It is a jewel of Africa.

I'm Ethiopian and I have no clue what you're talking about. There are dozens of polls and studies about the high religiosity of Ethiopians. Also, there are no "ruins from the times of Christ", there are ruins that pre-date Jesus Christ by 600 years or more and the Lalibela church complex isn't one of them.

There was this brilliant girl in my class back in Ethiopia, out of curiosity I asked her about her ethnicity and she responded “I’m Ethiopian”. I kept asking her but she just kept saying I’m Ethiopian and I understood her meaning and I admired her for it. That was about 10 years ago and it’s never too late to understand that it doesn’t matter what ethnicity one is, at the end of the day everyone is Ethiopian be it Amhara, Oromo, Tigre or any of the 80+ ethnic groups. A fractured country is bound for doom, let’s learn from history and other countries. Stand up united, break the revenge cycle, don’t be short sighted, think of the future generations and aim for peace and equality.

Do you know what $10 dollars or even $1 dollar would mean to those children there? I visited in 2007 (Addis Ababa, Shashemane). The best part is the loving people. For the church, even men wear a cover on their head, and you take your shoes off in the house of the lord. I was baptized there. Also, I don't think them guys were from the church that was asking for money. Obviously, I don't know for sure but they had no crosses or covering on. I think they just pretending to be from church to extort money. Coffee is originally from Ethiopia. So glad you got the chance to experience the coffee ceremony. Hopefully, you learned the history of the ceremony its very interesting and ancient. So let me tell you about the drum. The big side represents the beating, and lashes yesos christos took for us. The small side represents the baby yesos christos. This is why during hymns they clap hands when big side is played, and rock their hands like rocking a baby when small side is played. Not sure the meaning when they sit down to play. There is a lot to learn.

29 Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those with him are stern against the disbelievers, yet compassionate amongst themselves. You see them kneeling, prostrating, seeking blessings from God and approval. Their marks are on their faces from the effects of prostration. Such is their description in the Torah, and their description in the Gospel: like a plant that sprouts, becomes strong, grows thick, and rests on its stem, impressing the farmers. Through them He enrages the disbelievers. God has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a great reward.

85 Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

4 Aforetime, as guidance for mankind; and He sent down the Criterion. Those who have rejected God’s signs will have a severe punishment. God is Mighty, Able to take revenge.

I was really touched by Josey's advice to him (minute 31) about staying strong and focusing on his bright future. I grew up in a small village in Sierra Leone, and as a kid, these advices made a huge impact on me growing up and planted seeds of hope and aspiration that made the man I have now become. 13 years later, finished high school at home, graduated college in the USA, and just finished my PhD in the Biomedical Sciences.
