"They Call Us Chinese" India's Rebel State: Nagaland (

- Man, this isn't what you think of when you imagine India. In the far northeastern corner of the country, on the border of Myanmar, lies a state called Nagaland. In every sense of the word, Nagaland is different: different ethnicities, languages, even religions. It's the one place where I don't seem to hear the Indian accent when people speak English.
It's not that simple to get there. Nagaland is a series of hills, and to get to the heart of the state in Mon, you must go on a real journey. I decided to take this journey by train, road and whatever else I needed. I was very surprised by what I found at the end..

I liked Nagaland
Dude change your title, You are taking huge liberties with your Protective Area Permit. As a foreigner, you're not expected to indulge in the internal politics of the country, nevertheless on a very contentious subject.
@@abhesheknayak it's for the clicks, but that wasn't far from the truth few decades ago
smoking a doobie with the homies in nagaland is a bucketlist item i didnt know i had
pick any place in the world and you can find people to smoke with lol
You can find plenty of opium in Nagaland to mix in your doobie
and with some real Nagas at that
From my travelling experiences, the best ones are smoking doobies with random people I meet haha but not like this, i've never been outside of europe or north africa

As a fellow North-Eastern, it's not a rebal state anymore. Yes there are some separtist outfits, but Nagaland is an 100% Indian state. Government of India has signed peace treaty with North-Eastern insurgent groups, it's been quite peaceful here since last few decades.

A joint is meant for sharing, that's why it's called a "joint" it's a "joint activity". The enjoyment of a joint is more than doubled if shred with another fellow human and tripled if shared with two others.. Sadly, ( but not too sadly) tonight I'll be smoking a joint alone. Can it therefore even be called a joint? Maybe I should say I'll be smoking a "single" tonight.

We have such an enormous planet . how many cities, how many villages, how many tribes, how many cultures , languages .
let that sink in .
imagine we find an another planet with life on it
With the help of traveling religious zealots more and more cultures are cleansed every day. Like they have done throughout history, ethnic cleansing is the goal for missionaries.
yet we all make war and hate our neighbours for ridiculous reasons
probably more than 11 at least
Western world has no culture anymore. The last off it is being erased by design as we speak.
They also have another language created for people in Nagaland, called "Nagamese" since they have different languages as well there, and for everyone to speak with each other they adopted that. As far as I know it was mix of Assamese, English, and few Hindi grammatical rules. And other influence from the region.
Assamese buji puwa?
Assamese and Bengali particularly

These people were absolutely awesome! Great vid Tommy.
Just a few years back in that region (Mon District), the Indian army killed 14 unarmed Naga villagers for no reason. They were not even part of the Naga rebel groups but the Indian army still killed them. And if India was a sane state the soldiers involved would face consequences, but the army protected the culprits and let them go free.
"...Nagaland may not be the most prosperous part of India, certainly not prosperous od Sikkhim but I love the people".
Yes ,people there are nice but poor. Coz if they are rich, they won't be Christian.
They become Christian coz they hate what Hindu's government treats them. So badly. So racist.
In this turbulence situation, Christian missionaries take their chance.
India is saner then your mother and you luckily
@@kunalmarathe5542I totally understand AFSPA from the perspective of the government of India and her military but it has done nothing but cause the worst tragedies in naga territories. Countless stories of villages being rounded up, tortures, rapes and so on were committed since the 60s. A whole village lost all its men when the Sikh regiment beheaded every male in the pochury region. Men being buried alive and even tied up for target practice are a few examples of atrocities committed. I can never look at AFSPA as a policy that does any good. It's basically the opposite of the Geneva convention.
I'm from nagaland, born in 85 in a small village on the western side of nagaland, growing up I've heard the atrocities committed by the Indian army towards the innocent public irrespective of their tribes, just because some of our people are in the "rebel army"! ,it just can't be said in a short comment... I still remember one incident, it was in 97 ,one evening, we heard gunshots, EVERYBODY,I said EVERYBODY from my Village (about 1000 household) got panicked, some grabbed water bottles, torch lights, blankets ,their kids, machetes etc and began fleeing towards the deep forest here and there, at home it was my pregnant mom, me (the oldest) a sister, a younger differently abled brother (dad went to the city just a few days back for his studies) mom told me to grab the torchlight, water bottle and my brother's diapers and a few warm clothes and to hold my sister's hand and "run up to the mountain", mom carried my brother on her back and we began hurrying up to the mountain, when we reached there , there's a lot of people in the woods, there, the older men instructed everyone to "women and kids below 10 " to a specific area ,and kids above 10 and youths to a particular area and the rest of the older folks to the front, we weren't allowed to cry because "if the Indian army find us they'll beat us and kill our parents and young women will be taken away"! .. that memory still remains in my mind, as an adult I've been all over mainland India for work purposes and I've met wonderful people from mainland India and made friends with them but deep down inside me , I cannot accept that I am an Indian,it was forced down on me, ofc sure ,no doubt, India is a great country, there's good and bad, i understand that the regular citizens of mainland India doesn't have anything to do with the "issue" but history cannot be erased, right!? 2 millions Nagas have died since 1950. And I am not sympathetic towards the rebels either. If these bloody dimwits have a slight of shine in them ,the general naga populace won't have to suffer so much. The past Rebel army have at least a sense of principle, moral, ethics and integrity to them but these days ,they are shameless and remorseful. The Mon incident is one of the many they have swept under the rug all these years,if they weren't caught red handed they'll be saying " militants killed"! Just as usual. Do you know? Nagaland, including the other 6 North East Indian state is under Marital law since the 70's?? It is called the Armed forces special power act (AFSPA) .. giving the free right to the Indian Army to shoot and kill anybody on a mere suspicion.
@@thisnthat7760 As an Indian I feel if majority of nagas in nagaland wants independent they should be given independence ,but if not then Nagaland should be accepted, considered ,regarded as Indian as Karnataka or up or bengal is .AFSA act should be repealed from all nagaland,as now it's comparatively peaceful there...pros and cons for being with india,or independent from india should be discussed, studied people made aware and then referendum should be done... economic -social-educational basis should all be considered

Very unique experience . Thank you for the video . India is a fascinating place. First time to watch videos about entire regions of India.
I still don't understand why travel vloggers only stay in big cities in India... There is SO MUCH diversity in India's ecosystems (10 I believe)... I just don't understand why anyone would want to travel to a big city in India... There is constant noise, pollution, trash everywhere, annoying people, scammers, and nothing too amazing to see. Go see the diversity of a country as big as India... Don't stay in the terrible huge cities where you will never experience peace. Go experience nature.
Well then why don't you recommend me a place to visit in India then?
I like your premise, and the outcome. People are mostly wonderful where ever you go. There is always some minor issues but people are petty fucking cool where ever you go. I like what you are showing to the world.

8:59 fun fact about Ahom kingdom, they defeated the Mughal Empire 17 times, due to which Assam and North-East was never fell under Islamic rule. The Ahoms even adopted Hinduism as their main religion and excepted Indian languages, culture and tradition along with their own.
And they're thai immigrants
The burmese invaded and occupied the ahoms in 1821 and decimated them completely. There are literal horror stories of them even now.
@@kaifxaif9502No,there was no complete decimation of the ahom community! it was the ahom kingdom that was punctuated by several overthrows till the treaty of yandaboo signed between the Burmese invaders and the British troops in 1826,and thereupon assam became part of the British raj(even during the reign of British in assam,a famous conspiracy by maniram dewan to restore the ahom monarchy and reinstate purnanda borgohain's son as the king came to be,but was intercepted). but apparently, the ahoms never really left. they are still here, predominantly living in the districts of upper Assam.
Kachari kingdom fought mughals not Ahoms.
Ahoms are just minority(3%) of assam who just administered assam.
@@Bujbjjhfhhyfyvhvv I know but major battles were fought by Ahoms and Mughals such as Battle of Saraighat. Other kingdoms helped Ahoms in their fight against Mughals.

Happy New Year may not be an euphemism. Many buddhist countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Sri Lanka celebrated some form of new year this week.
Nagaland isnt a rebel state any more. Nagas fight for India and there is a Naga regiment in the Indian army. They have made us proud.
Nagaland incorporated into India in 1947 by the British. Very short history of less than 80 years. So Nagaland will fight for independence.
India too have a British name after independence. Before that, another colonial name - Hindustan. These two colonial names also makes India proud.
@@jacku8304 Original name of India is Bharat which also the official name of India and it's included in the Constitution. Also normal Naga people don't fight for Independence, they have accepted India as their country long ago, it's only few insurgents groups which doesn't represent the majority!
@@jacku8304 India isn't a British name, its actually a Greek given name for the region surrounding and East of river Indus. India has another name, Bharat, which has been mentioned by the other person here.
The word Bharat was invented or appropriated by the British orientalists in the 19th century. There was no single Bharat country 200 years back.
@@subhodipbanerjee6699 Which country granted independence to one of its colony less than 80years ago? That country(Britian) formed and created a new country named "India". Before that was "Hindustan" which was also another colony name for India. If India was named by Greece(which is a laughable claim), it is still a foreign name created for a region. Many countries shook off their controlled past, yet "India proudly holds on to it dearly. LOL...

Great that u reached our State and find so many beautiful places . ❤❤❤
At the time that India gained its independence in 1947, there were only 3 states in North East India - Assam, and the princely states of Manipur and Tripura. Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland were part of the larger territory of Assam. Eventually, they got separated to form their own distinct states.
Yup because they wanted their own legislatives
As Someone who spent my childhood in the northeast India, I can say it's one of the most beautiful places to live. I lived in Zemabawk, Mizoram; Dimapur, Nagaland and Gangtok, Sikkim. About the racism part, it goes both ways. When I was in the school, the mizo kids used to bully the kids who are a few shades darker than them. The vendors, renters ...etc scam us by charging more money than locals, It was a common thing, hearing many non locals getting mugged.

Great video brother. I'll have to put Nagaland on my long bucket list. We became good friends for many years until he passed away in the early 1990s (possibly from the effects of too much ganja and raxi/alcochol). I spent many happy hours with him in Pokhara, Nepal snacking on his "special" apple muffins and "special: brownies. sharing a glass of local raxi and a chillum of ganja :-) RIP Kamal Singh Lama.
