Interesting that watching so many reviews come out today, the divide seems to be between people who thought that an RPG *must* have an overarching large-scale story for the party to partake in, and those who were okay with this reimagining of the RPG story experience, where you really do just have a bunch of companions all with their own small-scale stories. I'm still going to buy this game despite nay-sayers about the story like GameSpot, because I have confidence that the individual stories will be endearing after playing the demo.
And I don't need every RPG I play to involve saving the universe!
imh3r3now1 I will admit that having just 8 random people with no connection walk around together is a little weird, however I think it's fine. As you mentioned, the whole "saving the universe" trope is way over used. However I think it would be interesting if they found a way to tie the 8 charters together without resorting to a large looking common threat.
exactly, the come together to save the universe story plot has become cliche at this point.
Chris Martin some of the mobile RPGs, Illusia for example, just have you stumbling across your Grand Adventure after getting lost in the woods while fishing or some such nonsense.
Whatever derived explanation it takes to get you fighting things.
trueshadow64 but is it really trying to be those games or is it just trying to resurrect the style at the expense of substance, for the sake self differentiation?
PAKTRA PRODUCTIONS Haha, you are trying too hard to defend this game. The developers took shortcuts with the story telling and animations, yet you think it’s trying to do something new. Omitting things is sooo artistic.
Already started playing my copy. But you know? Since the ground work is already done.... How about a Final Fantasy 6 remaster using the Octopath Traveler engine?
Luis j Soto Please PLEASE no more remakes. I am sick of it. FFVI is perfect as it is.
Felix S. But it deserves a proper remaster beside just a port with bad sound like the GBA version. Im thinking the remaster should use this games engine and an orchestrated sound track
Luis j Soto as I said: It does not need one. Not every game has to be remastered. There are dozens of ways to play this classic. The original version on the snes is perfect and it is on the snes classic mini.
I hate this remaster/remake overkill. Classics are classic for a reason and only very few were restricted by technical limits of its time (like eg shadow of the colossus) so that a remaster or remake makes sense. In many instances remakes even take away something from the original experience by altering things too much (the re-imagening of Final Fantasy VII is a fitting example). FFVI does not need an update. The original version is timeless.
@@FelixS.and that version of FF will still exist. I hate when people say I dont want a remake. Sorry friend it doesnt ruin the old version and guess what you never have to play the new one if you choose. I know it's crazy.
Kukwes VR As I said, the resources for unnecessary remakes should be invested into new projects so my argument is still absolutely valid. I know it is crazy.
I've seen that each ending actually builds up a larger threat, did any reviewer finished the 8 stories? And Datamine include a final boss theme and dungeon that doesnt seems to be the one of that is used during the final chapter of each character...
BlackFrost it seems like most reviewers finished one or two. who would have guessed finishing the entire 8 story arcs might unlock additional story content?
This should be top comment we need to know!
People have beaten all 8 and it unlocks a bunch of side quests
Jason from Kotaku beat all 8 and he said nothing happens
But the problem is that the characters has almost no interactiok between them, there are no reason of the going together and no presence in any of the other characters stories
I dig the art style, a modernized SNES throwback.
Worf I clicked for the thumbnail that immediately reminded me of whoever did the Final Fantasy Tactics and Metal Gear Solid instruction manual art.
i can onlu imagine how this would look if it was just snes
I love the environment. but I dislike the characters and monsters animations, or rather, lack thereof. they should have added more frames/more movements. even some similar games put more effort in this department.
great opinion...but for the most part with the route they were going I feel like the game did phenomenal overall.
More of a PS1 throwback. The graphical style is modeled after PS1 RPGs.
Im glad Topher Grace likes it.
Spot on!
Eric Foreman is into JRPG's
He's reviewing the game on his birthday
L . M . A . O !!!!!!
"Eric!"
I have to say, those graphics are *spectacular*. Also, whilst I am disappointed that the story is lacklustre, I can't help but remember that I have spent approximately one billion hours playing Pokémon... which doesn't exactly feature Oscar worthy writing.
You make a good point... Though each JRPG I play is played for one reason or another. If this one is not for the story, then hopefully I could love it for everything else, though it'll still feel offputting if we're not rewarded with a satisfying conclusion that unifies all of their plots. I'm just sad that there're not a lot of interactions between each of them, which could have been used for a lot of plot twists.
ubernaffa Graphics are ugly. I don’t see how people like it. They should’ve gone full 2D or full 3D. Even then I personally hate the art style.
The story is lackluster in the opnion of this reviwer in specific. I've seen lot of reviews from this game and vast majority of the reviewers say that the story is great.
Timothy Hobba its subjective with it looks good or not. I think it looks really awesome
ubernaffa the combat looks top notch too
Turn based FTW!!
isn't the reason we loved the snes classic rpg's is for the story?
Noob Noob not really.
Aside from chrono trigger
No, i play games for the gameplay.
Instead of 1 large story, you get 8 medium ones.
Only 20% of the games makes up 80% of the good stories. The rest are all just good gameplay
Picked this game up yesterday based on multiple reviews and gameplay videos I watched and boy am I glad I did.
I knew within the first hour or two of gameplay this game was right up my alley. If you’re even the slightest RPG fan you owe it to yourself to add this game to your collection 👍
Imagine Super Metroid made in the same graphical fashion!
A Black Patriot that would be too good to be true!!! The style is so damn unique, definitely need more games like this!
I would probably start drooling..if you ever got to play AM2R i kinda think about it like that but it'd be even cooler
Don't get me hot and bothered.
A Black Patriot super Metroid is perfect as it is
would not fit at all sorry.
Octopath’s story is amazing imo
I'm totally stuck, I cannot work out how to get into the Colosseum in one of the characters main story parts. It will not let me go into it. 😔😔😔😔
Reminds me so much of Golden Sun
Best game ever Golden Sun
A solid *9* from me I love it so far
( Almost goty RPG even )
I really want to get this game but I'm currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Hollow Knight...maybe when I finish those games I'll hop on this one.
Just drop xenoblade 2. I was happier after i did
whats the appeal of xenoblade? it is an action rpg with mmorpg mechanics, and a generic story( and i do realize stories are subjective, and you may like it). I don't mean this in a condescending way, just trying to see what the allure is
Chris Martin I’ll never understand how so many people love that game. The voice acting was irritating, Rex was TOO nice, the side quests were terrible. The combat was okay, but I got tired of it. The world was really amazing though.
Chris Martin The game is amazing, with a huge open world, and a mind-fucking story that ties HUGELY to XENOBLADE Chronicles near the end.
I enjoyed it immensely
Uber Matoa i will give the world is amazing
Hey on a serious note, should I get Octopath Traveler or Ys viii lod? Thanks!
Never heard of the latter... so... ?
yeah i'd say 8 is about right. I kinda wish their stories intertwined or at least acknowledged each other a little bit, but its still a fine jrpg with a nice combat system. can't wait to continue the story when i pick mine up.
1 year later.. give me your thoughts
I totally agree about how poorly they integrated each of the characters stories as all you do is meet them in a town/location and speak to them and magically end up as partners.
It's also awkward how during cutscenes and such all your party members disappear and it only focuses on that specific character. This game looks, plays and sounds great, but the story could've been sooo much better. Imagine all the possibilities that could happen if each character influenced what happens to your team next or alter enemy encounters
Actually, I complement the fact that there's next to no integration among each stories. That's just me though.
Before I watch the video...let me guess another 8 from gamespot?
emersonleon85 However did you know? Lol
The graphics remind me of FFT and Xenogears on the Playstation. Looking forward to playing this eventually
I happen to love the 8 stories.
Cant wait!
BattleCryPrelude It's allready out.
IM SOO EXCITED TO BUY THIS GAME
its worth it bro. Olberic is truly an amazing character on his own in the beginning but as I progressed I'm really loving Alfyn's battle style with potions
Jeremy oh I know, I’ve already put 7 hours into the game and just picked up Tressa on my journey! And I’m still enjoying every minute
i didn't want to go too far Cos I'm doing a let's play of the game itself and I only went far enough to soothe my taste. do you have a favorite character?
Jeremy Well, I started with Therion the thief because I loved his look, and he has a cool personality, but I quickly came to love Cyrus, he’s such a fun character! And he’s so fun to play!
don't have enough good boy points to buy this
There are loads of good points and a pretty high rating. GS's reviewers tend to sound like emotionless robots that create diatribes for negatives and quickly gloss over positives.
I think he means allowances
...where are the Disgaea like supers?
Some stories are stronger than others. Therion’s, for example, is excellent, while Ha’anit’s was hard to invest in, at least at first. But the voice acting quality never dips below solid for me, and I was never tempted to “skip” dialog. Excellent game.
Although in rpg's I've never cared for the story, Jrpg's on the other hand I believe that story is as important, at least for me. Although the art style is gorgeous and gameplay looks really good, will give a tried
If terraria, Minecraft and star dew Valley had graphics like octopath traveler they would be good examples of current generation AAA retro/indie games. I hope developers consider this when creating a pixel art game. This pixel standerd should be a update for all the games I've mentioned.
This game deserve more like a 9/10
started playing as olberic and OMG its a beautiful game..cant wait ti see how much time i spend after work just blowing hours on this game
Will this come to other consoles and PC?
no, switch exclusive. Square enix said they plan to do more games like this for switch if octopath was a success
I played this game, and except for what I think is what I think are some of the cheapest enemies in gaming history... I really like this game. I've played this game for at least 150 hours, and I'm still going because one of the hardest bosses I've ever faced in a long time. I personally have an odd nitpick with the blend of realistic settings with the sprite-based characters, as I think it's a little odd. I don't know if the contrast works in this game's benefit or the opposite. Buuuuttt... if they ever made a sequel, I would love to see where they go from here, because I think there is so much potential with this game. Although I sometimes hate the enemies at times, beating them to progress is SO MUCH SATISFYING. I love the characters and the stories, and found myself crying, laughing, and getting angry. Not enough games give me that emotional involvement, and I thank Octopath Traveler for existing. And the music is top-notch! It's like some XC stuff up in there!
I started as the thief but who’s good for supporting him in combat
Sounded like Topher Grace was narrating lol
8 sounds fair. I'm hearing almost everywhere the story isn't motivating much and that's an essential element to most if not all RPG fans.
MWH tbh I believe it deserves a solid 9 just because of the offered content
I think people nowadays have too high expectations on the story of an RPG. When we played Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore or Lufia on the SNES we enjoyed it for its gameplay and not the story. I really reall like Octopath Traveler and that will not change because of anything story-related.
Chili P yep, they’re expecting it to be something it’s not. That’s the millennial gamer hive mind at work right there. It’s a great game, I’m about seven hours in and while it’s not groundbreaking, it sure is a hell of a lot of fun and something rpg fans were missing. In that light, it gets a high score from me. Maybe not worth $60, but if it ever dropped to $40 I would wholeheartedly recommend.
To contrast with the review, I found the lack of an overarching plot to be a lot more unique. It gives a lot of charm for each of the main characters and the world around them. I found each character's trials, strengths, weaknesses, and goals to be a lot fleshed out when compared to most other RPGS. It felt a lot more personal and emotional when certain moments happened. To go off into another rant, unless there's a perfect party set-up, some of the enemies are a bit annoying to deal with. Especially bosses.
It was a good game for the 1st hour playing this, until you meet a new party member in the next town and you'll be like: oh, now I understand why this game got mixed reviews.
I think Gamespot are one of the harsher critic gaming sites around. They seem to hammer every game they review and nitpick every little minor problem that the rest of us find negligible.
I'm a little bit late but the individual stories aren't THAT bad. I was skeptical and disapointed at first that there was no "main" story persay, but the game is just so damn fun I don't even care. I find the stories charming and entertaining, especially Alfyn's chapyer 3 and Tressa's chapter 2.
Overall;
Gameplay: 5/5
Story: 3.5/5
Graphics: 4/5
Soundtrack: 11/5
That gives us a crisp average of 6/5, rounded. (The actual average, with soundtrack as just a 5/5 would be 4.5/5 rounded)
Tried the demo and played several characters... didn't care for the characters. The writing just felt weak with some characters just seeming a bit unbelievable in how they acted. The pacing of how conversations are broken up seemed awkwardly slow. I don't care that there is no big boss, but it does bug me to hear the characters rarely interact outside of battle. What's the point of having the other characters if they aren't going to get to know one another and bond? Overall, I love the art style and the battle seemed solid but without a solid story and likable characters I'm going to have to pass. I didn't really like the game world being so linear either. It's odd to hear the reviewer didn't like the story in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. That's one of the many things I love about that game. But hey, people like what they like. I have a feeling I won't like the Bravely Default games when I finally get around to playing them.
I was wary this is how the story would pan out, more short separate stories for each character and it’s sadly not what I would be interested in
Is there an option to use japanese VA?
I don't see a weak story as being bad. FF8 had an incredible storyline, but gameplay was so freaking boring. I think a lot of modern RPGs (and videogames in general) focus WAY too much on CGI cutscenes, insanely detailed backstories for NPCs, and trying to make us cry with character kill-offs. The best NES RPGs had very basic stories. Hell, sometimes the characters didn't even have names. Octopath's gameplay, visuals, and music, is just way too good to focus on petty complaints on how the eight storylines didn't intertwine enough.
the font is a big mistake in overall nice art style.
Reminds me of Alundra
I bought this game and started playing it, but I have to say while the music is excellent I just can't get into it.
I agree with those saying, use the engine to remaster a gem of the era such as Chrono Trigger or FF6 (USA)/FF3.
This game replenishes the JRPG style. They could just improve the overall story if they're going to release sequels.
Amazon broke the street date and I got my copy like 11 hours ago. Biggest grip is there's no way to speed up the animations. There cool at first but after the 100th time I just want it to hurry up.
Which animations? The cutscenes or the ones in the combat? I'm hesitating from buying this until more reviews are out.
What animations? They sre never slow...
The cutscenes? Hold a direction, hold b, and then poof! SKIP CUTSCENES!
looks awesome
Serious question, I've not played a turn Based rpg since final fantasy 7 and then advance wars on. Gba I've tried the recent ff game and didn't stick with it beyond two hours. So is this seriously worth a buy for someone who hasn't been hooked on this type of game for years 🤔great video as usual great in depth chat 👍
I personally love it, despite a few flaws.
While the battle system in any game is very important and is usually the bulk of gameplay. SNES RPGs are really know for story telling and that's definitely what I remember most about them when thinking back. Square Enix is nowhere closed to what they used to be.
Run For Fun ! The story is great, the reviewer is just dumb
Run For Fun ! No snes rpg except for FFVI and Chrono trigger had an exceptional story. Get rid of your nostalgia glasses.
I played most of the SNES RPGs about a year ago for the first time. I also played the demos and was very disappointed by the story and unimpressed with the neat but way to filtered graphics.
Let me ask you: have you played this game with each of the eight stories?
Just bought it on the Xbox store! I never thought I would say that
This would have been so much better as an FF6 remake. Love the art style.
stupid question, like really stupid, but can you complete 1 characters story without switching the character?
I really want to purchase but I'm afraid of not having as much opportunity to play as I would like.
mrgrimrjs well it's a good thing it's in the style of games from an era that played with you at your own pace. ☺️
irs a good pick up and play game since a characters chapter just last 1-3 hours so you dont have to play long hours to finish it.
These comments in the comment section about the price for the game and story being the only thing these people care is beyond funny and dumb to read.
Kevin MHfan I would say gameplay and other things cause if you were looking for nothing but narrative then play novel games.
The game offers a really dept battle system a good soundtrack with really good graphics. While the story does not tie in, at the end of the day you still get to play 8 characters with different story lines. Its not as bad as people think it is. At the end of the day the target market of the game is people who would like to play the reminiscent turn based old style games.
I just realised enemies don't even move when they attack you; they just flash...
Fair enough, I see now that Final Fantasy 6 has the same "issue". Thing is, I only played JRPGs when the PSX was relevant.
So do I need to play through the game 8 times to see all the stories ?
callum101092 No... watch the video.
Lol highly vulnerable = taking a little bit more damage
should be higher modern classic
Juan C. Ikr even ign gave it a high score
Uhhh sure 8 like Kirby star allies
I still like Kirby a lot though
Why no one can make an RPG like FFVII for the switch?
Octopath travelers = 8 paths traveling. I get it.
8 is a good number get it octogon
This looks cool but only if I am an RPG fan.
This Brown doing the review. Not a good person for reviews. His review of Mad Max is the bests. He said he didn’t understand how Mad Max could carry parts around cars. Like Mad Max should not been able to do because it’s not realistic. Lol. Matt Maharashtra would’ve been better.
Love Gamespot, but why ALL the reviews are made by the same person and the score is always 8?
Definitly not 8 more like 9
and they made bravely second and bravely default?
Angelo Melzer Yes
Im fine with the story as long as the gameplay exp is great
And btw, its hard to top gigantic scale story like Xenoblade Chronicles 2,, boy the game story realy make us cry laugh even chills
Oh boy, I hate XC2 with all my heart... It's like a terrible anime which came in the form of a bad game. It took me 3 months to beat it (could've beaten it in a week) as well and I didn't play any other games because I said to my self, "I must beat it." I finally did and even the ending disappointed me.
I watch ye Sleep Hmm, the only things I absolutely hated in XC2 were the majority of the character designs as well as the unneeded cringey cliche scenes. The rest was pretty spectacular imo. Each to their own, of course.
"Well, opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one." - Clint Eastwood
this game deserves a 9! gamespot always gives a lower score than the game deserves
Famitsu gave it 9/10 by the four reviewers, so there's that ray of hope at least~
I'm waiting for more reviews before buying it though.
this channel is not individual opinion, it's offical gaming channel so yeah it's a fucking award, and i have rights to critisize them
Will there be voice over in English? Or is Japanese unavoidable?
elmisterchups idk maybe....listen to the game audio? In the video?
You can switch between Japanese and English.
it has duel audio
vVAstrAVv I guess I missed it. Thx
Why would you use any dub in 2018? Are you one of those ignorant people who can't process anything but thier own language?
Never clicked off a video this fast before.
good story is what makes a good rpg. So ya...
ragerblade82 story isn’t bad. This person just didn’t like it since a good story is very opinionated
Trust me on this. It's no Chrono Trigger. Final Fantasy 8. Wild Arms or Xenogears. Breaking the fucking armor gets old pretty quickly.
So the game did end up having a final dungeon overarching and tieing all the stories.
Strat Christ yes I heard there is a final dungeon and boss but you have to do very specific things to get it kinda like SMT 4 though probably not as irritating
Now this is a review not that IGN bullshit that doesn’t explain anything about the game itself.
I'll get this when it's half off.
Versus25 that’s a very long wait
wow i cant believe the low point was the story!? it was so strong in the demo
Steven Cresswel I think you should take the review with a grain of salt. While this reviewer may have disliked it there were plenty of others who found it enjoyable. As long as you don't mind the objective lack of character interaction or the admittedly disappointing lack of an overarching story(although I have heard there is a sidequests that connected some of the stories and had a major boss). Then it's very likely that you will find octopath's story to be enjoyable. Especially if you enjoyed the demo.
Most reviews I've read all docked point's for weak story, no/weak character interactions and immersion breaking moments such as events playing out "alone" but you actually have other characters with you. Seems like a common theme in most of the reviews.
Why do games these days have such a hard time with story telling
Shaun Connely story honestly isn’t bad though in this game.
Finalhour10 I agree. I’ve only started it though. I meant games on the whole: lol on the whole.
Because story is never supposed to be the main priority of a video game. If the story fails it can be made up in other places where it can excel at. Which this game does.
The story is atrocious and this is highlighted further by how disjointed the story pieces are for the majority of the game
Awesome
Do you think this game is for old-school RPG fans?
The "nostalgia" hits so hard. Still on retro style, but with modern visual effects. If the story is terrible, the the rpg fan will not happy. Afterall, the seller point of an classic rpg game is the story.
Novel Nouvel I see. I wish that I can play this.
If you consider "old-school RPG fans" those who are fine with a not-so-deep story and who do not cry about it until their eyes run dry, yes, it is!
It shies away from a few things, like the story being eight individual ones (which I actually liked), but game-play wise, it's a turn-based RPG with unique elements. It feels closely to Final Fantasy I, IV, and V respectively.
8- too much traveling
Branimir Tocko too much traveling not enough octo
Too many paths
Am i the only one that doesnt like turn based games like these? Idk not my thing but im sure any turn based fan would love this
kukingina Isnt he allowed to watch whatever he wants to? Wtf? And he possibly didnt even knew the fighting system was turn-based before watching this video.
I know I’m going to get called-out for even suggesting this, but how cool would it have been to play a remake of FF6 in this style? I’m still going get this game. It just sounds like it falls short on so many of of the finer things earlier Final Fantasy games did so well - which is all the more disappointing when you consider those are the games that Octopath Teaveller draws its main inspiration from.
Sheesh yal COOKED the game
Sorry, Gamespot, but your review of this game blows. It's definitely a 9 out of 10 game!
This game is amazing! I’ve been playing it and I can’t put it down! It has so much content
Brilliant review
The fact that you said Each individual story is lackluster is in my eyes is invalidated because that’s a sign that you either had no interest in the story, or didn’t care to dissect the other qualities or intricacies of the lore and narrative. Not to mention that 1 faulty element won’t substitute for a significant drop in quality of a product and/or a divide in the community. Half assed review in my opinion
Potato mode Destiny 2
I hope it comes to mobile, AppStore or GooglePlay
Tommy Castle not happening lol
Switch "exclusive"
8
same score as FFXV. And I really hated that game.
It's not even the same style. Also FF15 scored lower.
Same score = same game
Makes sense
hard skip. great gameplay and amazing graphics but weak story ruins all of it.
Jude Ceant it's not a weak story
This was one few review that did not like story most of review they love the story.
The same reviewer didn't like Xenoblade 2 story and characters, but plenty of people like it. So yeah, you should check other reviewers before judging it solely on one review.
SuperAvocado welp I guess it's time to unsub.
Ironwardog I just played some of the demo and holy crap I got sucked in quick and not by gameplay just by the start of primrose's story.
8path traveler got an 8 from 8spot, decent.
superm
omg 😍
Pass bc of that shitty full price tag. does not look like its worth it at all. If its true that nintendo does not put discounts or does not lower the prices of their game. Then might not ever buy this anymore. Too bad.
Jovic Oliver Blazo play the demo. I have the game and I can say in my opinion that I is probably worth even more.
Shut the fuck up, douche-bag. You're only saying this because it's a Switch exclusive. If that game was on the other system, you'll probably say otherwise.
