Octopath Traveler Review - The Final Verdict

  • Octopath Traveler takes a long, hard look at classic JRPGs, successfully emulates most of what we remember so fondly about them with our rose tinted nostalgia glasses, sheds their annoying or excessive parts that we so often choose to forget, and adds its own surprising and unique innovations that elevate it from the status of "yet another nostalgic pander" to that of a proper modern wonder.

I'm 30 hours in. This is the 2nd best game on the Switch, followed closely behind Zelda Breath of the Wild. It's the perfect game to pick up and play at either short or long intervals. Game pacing and difficulty is perfect. And the longer you play and upgrade your characters, the more you feel the progress you're making.

IMO the absolute best part is the bosses, and I don't usually say this. I've done 24 of them so far and only 1 has disappointed, purely just for being out of nowhere. Each and every other one has put a big goofy grin on my face, either because there's genuine stakes, interesting story beats, kickass music or a genuinely enjoyable mechanic

I pre-ordered the limited edition version of the game when I first saw the reveal trailer. When I finally played the demo on the switch, I attempted to get past the timer because the demo captivated me just that much. Once I received the game, I played it hours on end with "Primrose" as my main cause I'm an avid dancer/martial artist and I enjoy the idea of being a seductress to men ^_^. After beating the game with all the characters and leveling them all up to 80 and them some, I completed all the side quests, unlocked all the divine skills and then fought and destroyed Galdera the true secret boss after a 1 hour and 20 minute battle. This was by far best fight I had with a "hidden true boss" of any rpg in a while. The Battle music alone for the divine skills were epic and the boss battle music with Galdera was on a level similar to that of Parasite Eve's final secret boss in the Chrysler building in the EX game. I was hurt and sadden as a fan when this game won no awards at the american Video game awards and instead "Red Dead Redemption" took almost everything. The Japanese are masters at telling a captivating and soulful tugging story. To call this game a masterpiece is an injustice when a game of this clairvoyance and magnitude deserves the right to be called and deemed a "Magus Magnum Opus" of the highest crafted accord in its sector of role playing games. I hope that the prequel of this game gets a release or translation for switch. Last but not least the same year upon the release of this game, I traveled to Japan and bought the soundtrack of this game from its native lands. Kudos and respect to all the underappreciated voice actors who mastered their roles in this game and to the master symphony orchestra for delivering the music in this game on a level of Amadeus.

The game has a bonus level that unites the stories, and also has a part in where you learn by talking to the people; a lot about the characters and the world. So you all saying it doesn't have any story are wrong. Plus each character has its own journey/story.

I feel Octopath traveler does a brilliant job at leaving the stories to your imagination. For example these individuals are only adventurers/travelers tackling at their own needs and coincidentally coming across others doing the same. While one is doing their quest in a village/town, the others are doing their own thing; Therion snagging a few items, Tressa bargaining, so on and so forth. they're really only helping each other when they really need it as they do in boss fights. I'm absolutely not saying that there are no flaws what so ever but i'm only implying that if you really think about it, there isn't so much. IMO this is a game that'll stay

9 out of 10? Excellent review but imo I believe and 8 out of 10 is better. What's killing it for me is the repetitive dungeons and plot "layout"? What I mean is, you start a tale, talk to a few people (later in the game you use that character's special ability to progress), go to a boring dungeon and kill the boss. What I enjoyed most was exploring to new areas and challenging my team with monsters way above my level

Sakutaro〈3musik I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s perfect. As an example, I felt Tressa’s story was written as a tack-on to other stories. She doesn’t encounter reoccurring enemies or have a high level goal. And her ending just reinforces this. I gave up hope on her arc as soon as Esmeralda came in, she came out of absolutely nowhere and didn’t add stakes to the final battle for Tressa. Now that I’ve finished the entire game the only interesting hook her story has to the main story is the fact that the author of her notebook is the father of Kit, who was used to summon Galdera

I remember I was so excited for Chrono Cross. I bought the game without even bothering to rent it first, because how could it possibly not be fantastic being the sequel to Chrono Trigger? And everyone loved it too, which reassured me even more. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed to find out it was nothing like Chrono Trigger. My sister (who was also a huge Chrono Trigger fan) was just as disappointed. Neither one of us liked that game. At least the music was phenomenal, but that alone couldn't save it.

My only few disappointments of the game is that the narrative for each characters are kept seperate, sure you have the option to speak to your own party members here in there but it hinders the structure of a good plot. and the dungeons or caves leading up to the boss fights all pretty much look the same. Incredible game though, this is IMO a love letter to the fans of old turn based JRPGS. Hope they continue with these games in the future as theres still a strong fan base of these type of games

For example, Tresser chapter 2 story when she was BULLIED by the town guards, I have OLBERIC (greatest swordsman in the realm), Primrose (also one of the the best fighter/"assasin" in the realm) and both of them are assumed to be non-existent. Finished the game, and its definitely NOT a 9. Voice acting is very inconsistent and sometimes even annoying altho the music is very good, the mediocre story of most characters goes from being boring to being ok. The pacing in the game is a problem too, and difficulty spikes in some dungeons don't help it either. Most of the secrets and routes are hidden with objects blocking your view, so you'll have to hug every wall and walking into the background makes it even worse because of the camera. Its by no means a bad game, its a pretty ok jrpg, but not a 9 by far. A 7/10 would be more fitting as I'm being slightly generous.

Personally, I think it's a unique idea. A breath of fresh air in a genre where basically every game has a 1 way trip to a demon lord at the end.

First it's not a unique idea, you ever heard of the game SaGa Frontier? I never liked that game for the same reason. I my try it someday via emulation but most likely not because the story telling looks horrendous and the battle system looks tedious. But to each there own, if you enjoy playing it then that's good but for me if I want a game that's supposed to be like Final Fantasy VI (and this game most diffidently isn't) I'll play Final Fantasy VI itself, now that is a JRPG with a awesome epic story and a battle system that is a joy to use. :)

All RPGS have the same story yet with octopath it's a damn problem. Persona 5 story was basic af. Almost every final fantasy game has the same story with different characters and events that all lead up. and there is an story beat all 8 of them do an certain side quest and unlock how all the stories are connected

To me it feels like lazy writing, can't think of a good single epic story so lets just write a bunch of short stories. Boring. Even if the story was good there's still that tedious battle system, I prefer a more straight forward battle system like Final Fantasy games had till the latter ones which I don't care for, like Chrono Trigger (do I have to say more about that game lol) and The 7th Saga. I can play these games over and over. Go back and play those games and see if they're not much better then this game.

How is it lazy writing there is an epic story that connects all the story. So in that case all rpgs copied of dragon quest for the whole save the world bs imo.

Try the demo and see if you like it because it may not be as strong in the story department as other games, but its game play, graphics, and soundtrack are phenomenal.

"8 shallow, generic chapters..." That you also know nothing about since you don't have the game and only listened to this single review.

Dakota Colley Great reasoning buddy, really proved your point there! Seriously though if you're going to bash a game at least use some brain cells and give legitimate reasons instead of
"Hurr durr it bad and switch sucks haha lol"
