    Great review. Thanks! I love this game. One of my favorite aspects of the job system is that any SUPPORT skill learned remains with your character, even when you change out that job. That allows you to do something like, make Olberic a merchant for a few moments, unlock SP saver, and switch it out to make up for his low magic points. Just one of so many examples.

    Having just completed the game today, I can say that I wish there was more. It's great when an RPG leaves you wanting more, especially after my 100 or so hours spent. But the game's story feels....well, it feels like it's missing that 3rd act. Considering how traditional it is in its JRPG tropes, I'm surprised there wasn't some big twist at the end. The game just kind of ends. Sure, there's a special dungeon but I had no idea it was even there until I looked it up, only available after the game is done and when certain side quests are complete.

    • @allegryan
      @allegryan Před 5 lety +2

      felman87 Either way, the Gate of Finis IS the big twist/3rd act. The Chapter 4s give you a pretty good and obvious idea of something later on and especially when returning to H'aanit's final dungeon the game gives you a heavy push in the right direction as to what sidequests you might to do.

    i think that in the end I prioritize story and characters over the combat system to carry me through an rpg. of course there are exceptions either way, but I think that if the narrative just isn't there then I'll eventually lose interest. seems to apply only to turn based rpgs though, since I'm down to play through most real time combat systems or action rpgs that require skill and and have some additional depth. I think that in general i've lost patience with turn based rpgs, or maybe it's always been that way since I've used the fast forward button on snes emulators for as long as I can remember. i hope that as things move forward, increasing battle speed, skipping animations, and fast forward buttons become the norm. glad fire emblem games have had that for quite some time
    the narrative weaknesses of this one sound like a bit of a turnoff unfortunately, although Primrose's intro was pretty compelling. still bought the game but might give it some time before I get around to it. hope for octopath 2 with a more cohesive narrative now that they've done a lot of the heavy lifting

    • @JazGalaxy
      @JazGalaxy Před 5 lety +3

      VGJunky with respect, you’ve probably just always been that way. You’re right to say that. The idea that styles of games “evolve” is garbage. Games simply change to appeal more to different types of gamers, often playing the odds. Final Fantasy picked up more fans as it became more broad, requiring less and less from the player base. Less reading, less math, less strategy, less patience, less imagination, etc. that doesn’t make it “better”, it just makes it less offensive. More “accessible”.

    I dont mind the Stories intersecting in Terms of content, for instance, if the Villian for one of the travelers story had been a hero or mentor of anothers, I think that may have been cool but I actually prefer that the characters themselves remain separate... The stories bleeding into each other would have felt less like 8 seperate paths to me and more like 1 path traveled by 8 different characters.

    • @Leathal
      @Leathal Před 5 lety

      Without spoiling too much, all eight characters have at least a minor part of their storyline that intersects with another character. The devs could have gone a little further with it without messing up the "eight separate stories" conceit, but by the time you finish all chapter 4's the characters end up linked in a manner more along the lines of "these people all live in the same world" and less "these people are all anime destined heroes of justice". Even the post-game final boss gets introduced in a refreshing way - yeah he's a world ending threat etc etc but you're mostly just searching for a side quest kid you've been helping all game and hey if your party needs to beat up some big ugly monster to rescue their pal that's all the motivation they've needed all game. (that said, the final dungeon text dumps so much lore it felt like the second disc of Xenogears - even if it does connect the stories).

    Each character gets a powerful story and experience a subtle issue in life we can all relate to. The way they are connected is strong enough to make the game enjoyable. The plot is thickened just like Avengers - A cast of heroes from completely different life/decisions/path/etc
    Just to give an example :)

  • @aaronkl
    @aaronkl Před 5 lety

    I really enjoyed this game. I think 8 is a reasonable score. The combats gameplay loop is really great and customizing party with different classes brings out creativity.( Runelord Tressa is the best, you can cheese even the final secret boss with transfer rune + sidestep). Being able to equip support skills even if you are not in that class brings out diversity in builds.
    However, I feel like there is very little post game content which could have made this game truly amazing. After the final boss, you are really just playing to get huge damage numbers and capturing level 10 beast with Haa'nit

    The only thing I disagree with is the depth of field complaint. Its purposeful, to make the world look "small". Macro photography and cinematography, as well as product photography utilize macro and tilt-shift lenses to make items looks smaller or bigger, and the depth of field contributes to that look. Ill agree that it can be a little distracting, especally if you dont know why it was designed that way, but I love it.

    Its hard to purchase this game knowing the story isn't firing on all cylinders.
    I'm so hungry for a good story, I really wish this had knocked it out the park.
    I don't care about intertwining stories but the fact that they followed a repeating pattern and none of the stories were that good, this hurts the most to hear. :'(

    And I agree with the score mostly. I'd personally be a bit higher, but theres plenty of things that keep this game from being "perfect." The main issue for me was the lack of meaningful interactions between characters; just seemed odd to spend dozens of hours with people who barely ever talked.
    Overall though...combat...music...just stellar. So glad this game exists.

    People saying this game lacks identity, personality or charm are seriously weirding me out. But well not my loss. In that regard the game reminds of the DQ series, with its simplistic approach to story telling and just being straightforward. I loved the structure of the game and the only thing they have to change is having slightly more natural character interactions. No grinding (for the regular chapters with each character, maybe you have to grind for some postgame stuff ... which I would hardly hold against the game), no gold farming for gear ... game gives you options to avoid everything to a good extend. So yeah more of this SE, please.
    Personally I would give it a 9/10 so far, still have postgame stuff to do though.

    The story here seems extremely split. Some love it, and some hate it. I wish they intertwined more, but I just have some sort of joy seeing these characters interact and move through their respective themes, tones, settings, and environment, and how they interact. They aren’t particularly deep, but the way they clash so well with one another can 9 Times out of ten create a funny, heart wrenching, heartwarming, or dramatic scene, and shift those at the drop of a dime, and it’ll work well. But yes, the combat is the most outstanding thing here, and the story catalyzes it well. Or maybe I’m just biased because I really love this kind of game.

  • @bitterbatterdog
    @bitterbatterdog Před 5 lety

    My main problem with the game so far is that the "unique" actions aren't unique. I can either guide or allure, challenge or provoke, scrutinize or ask, and steal or collect. Because of this split it can become very easy to select who to switch out, with the only one I ever worried about was Therion/Tressa. With Tressa being my main protagonist, that became an easy choice.

    @Xristophero Před 5 lety

    Not watching the review until I complete the game, but...
    I'm 86 hours in, have 10 chapters left, and then plan to dive into the post game wrap-up. I get that the stories may be "shallow," but I think that's ultimately to its benefit. As someone who prioritizes story over all else, I am tired of convoluted, "adult" stories that are really more pretentious than anything else.
    Presentation is everything, and this game's world/characters have enthralled me beyond anything in recent memory - for all the lack of flash and style. And objectively, when pitted against classics like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, the stories are at least on par in terms of "shallowness." It's magical, and whimsical, and poignant at the same time - not for being some mastercraft of modern day prophetic warning of social controversy, but for being a beautiful, simple adventure.
    I can't fault the story for anything. I think it's a breath of fresh air to not have to learn Latin, or entire in-game lexicons in order to unravel the [ultimately superficial, indulgent] plot.
    9/10 for me.

    • @Xristophero
      @Xristophero Před 5 lety

      If I have to objective, I think the weak points of the game are 1) a bit of repetition in the chapter flow, 2) the AMAZING soundtrack plops the same tracks atop emotional scenes a bit too much, 3) I think Therion is a weak character, and 4) I wish quests would require a bit more complexity (going between towns, arena more fully fleshed out, Cyrus' investigatiosn more fleshed out, etc.).
      In my opinion, if this game featured a more expansive story after recruiting everyone (maybe part 2 will be just that - a cohesive adventure using these established characters), I honestly think it could be an objectively equal game to something like FFVI.

    seeing the score for this and beating ni no kuni 2 I can definitely say you rated NNK2 WAY too high. ill be interested in the atrocity of rating dq 11 lower than nnk2 if that happens.

    I'm surprised you didn't notice how the enemies have a different style than the main characters pixelated art. Monsters look more detailed. inconsistent just like windows design. 🤭

    Good review, IGN should totally steal it and plagiarize this. I'll let them know, maybe they will come here and take it and pretend they wrote it, it's really a good review.

      Unlike some other reviewers, they actually beat the game before posting a review. Not talking about Dunkey (although it's dumb that he "reviewed" the extended demo), but literally all of the mainstream gaming media missed the fact that there's an actual final dungeon and somehow beat everything else in under 30 hours (Kotaku being the worst offender, as usual).

    I'm halfway through it now. This is the only "pure" turn based RPG (No quick time events, etc.) outside of Pokemon that I have been able to get through. Final Fantasy games are so boring to me with the easy "Spam A" tactics and the repetitive grinding. This combat makes you think the whole time, the stories are all really interesting, and, while it's not easy, if you do everything, there's no grinding. I am using a guide for sidequests and a checklist for side dungeons though, which helps a lot.

    Great review. 60 hours in and I would say a 9 for me which is unexpected. The combat is too good. I like that there are 8 individual stories. I play so many games and when someone tries something different it usually is better at keeping my interest.

      for my point this game is not hero save the world but "everyone build the world" every path of character in this game is build the world not just 8 but every story character in this game is important and beautiful to make the world interesting

      Yeah my opinion may change as I am up to the last chapter 3 story and have finished no chapters 4's as yet. I am curious about the final dungeon but do no need a connection to enjoy the game. I see how some do and that is a legitimate complaint. Just hoping I do not have to grind too much to do the post game

    Honestly the shallow-ish stories didn't bother as much because it's amazing battle mechanics come first, story second. If this were a movie or book, I'd agree with the review more...but as it is, this game is a 9 to 9.4 to me. Good review Easy Allies, thanks!

      I love the stories! Sure they are a bit shallow, but they're charming and different from what you usually getting in games. Together with a masterpiece soundtrack this is easily like a 9.3 for me. Have a hard time seeing I will play something better this year. Best game on switch together with zelda for me. And hey I usually don't like jrpgs, mainly because of their story, grind and length.

  • @sterlingwirth7931

    Bosses are definitely a weak link in this game. The repetitive nature of the each characters story means you run into a lot of them. Because of that boss fights devolve into finding a hitch or rhythm to them and slowly whittling away at their huge health bars. It’s not very engaging and can be frustrating if you miss a beat, die, and have to spend another 2 hours fighting the boss over again.

  • @DrWub
    @DrWub Před 5 lety +6

    I was disappointed in the lack of interactions. Sure you have the small chats after a cutscene during a chapter but there's no combat banter and every chapter treats the party as if it doesn't exist. Every chapter felt isolated It didn't really feel like you were a group of friends or allies going on a journey.
