So I've Played The Sea Of Stars and Octopath Traveler 2 Demos...
Just like with Valkyrie Elysium and Star Ocean Divine Force, I feel that this is something I want to make in to a regular occurrence for the channel. Not only does it give me a taste of some of the newest JRPGs early on, but I'd like to think it might aid you guys in whether you might want to purchase them yourselves.
So if you're curious about whether you should buy Octopath Traveler 2 or Sea of Stars or whether these JRPGs are worth your time, give it a watch and see what you think!

Forgot to mention as well, both of these were played on Switch.
PC version on 120 framerate is a whole different experience and I don't think you need to have a very powerful PC system to play this at max graphics. Also the save slots Im sure its only for the demo its just one. Since that will be transferable to the full game so you can continue from where you left off.
The original Octopath Traveler game demo also only had one save slot, but the full game had multiple.
I'm sure the same will be true of the full game of Octopath Traveler II.

Yup, that seems to be the consensus - it just struck me as odd as I've never seen that in any other demo I've played. But in hindsight, ot makes sense if there's an option in the save menu stating 'choose your slot'.

I remember how well they did the demo for the first Octopath, and from this review, I understand they went for the same approach. I didn't think much of it before, but I thought at the time to try it, the demo was rich, and I was hooked. Went to buy the game only because of the demo, and they even allowed me to continue from the demo itself :)
They obviously think highly of their game, and it was a great decision to make a big demo, and it's probably a great decision now.
I picked Partitio too and I loved his character. It's so funny how immediately willing he is to gather an angry mob and fight people. And the Sea of Stars demo made a strong impression. I like the mechanics that spice it up, and the challenge felt just about right. Of course, the music is great in both.
Octopath's method of reducing random encounters is learning at least two skills from the scholar job and equipping the support skill: evasive maneuvers. It doesn't stack, but it makes a very noticeable difference in how many random encounters you'll run into while exploring.
No, the thing about OTs encounters is that they are not random. You should use the term calculated encounters.

I wish they would implement this speed up-option for the first octopath traveler via patch. Would make things so much better...
I think speed up options should be a standard feature of modern AA and above turn based titles nowadays, helps a bunch.
Zodiac Age has one. It's amazing. I'm fully planning on grabbing OPT 2 and have never played the first. I'm betting it's gona be good

Pretty sure the single save slot for Octopath II is due to it being a demo! Makes sense for importing the save data into the full game. I fully agree about the timing aspect of Sea of Stars being *Required* though, regardless what the tutorial says. I never got a party wipe, but I got DANGEROUSLY close many times. Definitely looking forward to both games, though. The year looks bright for JRPGs!
Yeah that seems to be the case, so good news there. I've never seen the restriction to one save slot in other demos, but then again I haven't played too many in the past.
Probably limited demo to 1 save slot to make it easier for them the transfer demo progress to the main game. But that's just a guess. Thanks for video, really am looking to see more of sea of stars when we get it later this year! Looks very promising!

I'm so happy to hear about the octopath traveler game being good, I've had the demo installed since the direct but I've just been trying to finish Fire emblem first before I checked it out.

I pre-ordered 'Octopath Traveler II' almost straight away went the first trailer dropped as I love the original. It'll be interesting to see what other classes you can get outside the ones provided, one thing I loved is getting those higher caliber jobs after defeating a boss in the first game. And giving members classes other than the ones they have in the beginning.

Im not sure if you are aware, but you can play all 8 characters in Octopath Demo. You just have to create a new game and overwrite the old one
Downloaded both, but haven't even opened them. Been so enthralled with Metroid Prime and Minish Cap. Staying up to 4am each night playing them.
I was also SO happy Etrian Odyssey 1-3 were announced. I've been wanting to play EO3, but couldn't find it under $250 for a loose cart. It also means that the new Etrian Odyssey Switch game is near because they have the systems running on switch like the mapping system. So I'm looking forward to that
The likes of EO3 desperately needed a port - near on impossible to find unless you're willing to pay top dollar.
If Octopath Traveler 2 is anything like the first it will have multiple save slots. I believe this will just be one for the demo! As it would be silly otherwise! Also you will of been sprinting which is why the encounter rate was higher. Not sure if you know about that. It's a catch-22 though because who wants to run slowly lol?!
Hikari was amazing, I started with him too. Story was epic and jeeze he is very OP! Did you learn the counter ability? My God lol I was one shotting enemies just by using that. Turned combat to fast and the battles were over in seconds lol.
I can't wait for more, but £49.99 is too much on PC. I will be waiting for it to reduce in price especially as it just feels like the first game again but new characters and story. I love the little boat you get though and the new movements with that. So cool. So happy they actually gave us a demo on Steam though!!! We usually get shafted. Bit miffed we didn't get Sea of Stars there but not long for me to wait now.
Actually I was running at standard speed on most occasions just to gauge the difference, it was still pretty frequent (I think I mentioned that in the commentary).
@@TheKisekiNut Damn really! Sorry must of not heard that bit lol. I put it on max speed and I didn't find it too bad. Slightly high but I was also wiping the enemies out in about 3 seconds so it didn't matter much lol. My counter attack hit so hard! It one shot most things. I started the battle, did that counter skill then just did nothing lol
I want to pick up both eventually.

Looks like there's been a lot of improvement and polishing to the original systems in Octopath Traveller. I'm looking forwards to, hopefully, seeing some actual interaction between the party members compared to how little there was in the first game.
I enjoyed SoS quite a lot. The difficulty was higher than normally expected from a demo but I managed to stay alive by cooking food and using great quantities while battling. Thought I was a goner with the boss as I had no more items but it went down as I was about to! My worry is if there are going to be a lot of puzzles. I was ok with the demo puzzle but am notoriously bad at puzzles in general. I've given up so many games (before the days of readily available online guides) out of inability to progress. I have zero shame in saying that I will probably wait until someone writes a guide (kudos to all you writers!) to buy the game. I'm there for story and combat rather than puzzles but they often all go hand in hand. Thanks again for your video!
I'm the same way with puzzles, they aren't really my thing. If they're simple enough then all good, but if they're anything like Shadows of Adam and the orb puzzles, that's a hard no for me.
Both games look nice, even if they're not things I would play. But my friends will most likely pick them up. A few of them are really into indie titles. I do hope everyone who plays Octopath 2 has lots of fun with it.

I ended up picking Ochette as my first character for Octopath Traveler II. I haven't gotten too far in yet, but I am enjoying the game so far. I will have to try Sea of Stars next.
I just played the octopath's demo, and i think this game is awesome! The soundtrack is amazing, there are more interactions between characters.

The Sea of Stars demo did enough to catapult it to the top of my most anticipated games list, right behind Reverie.
Thanks for the video! It's definitely interesting to here more about Octopath II because no matter how much I hear people praise it -- and its predecessor -- it just doesn't grab me and I'm not sure why. And that persists here too. Even if I can accept that they are as good of games as people say, there's just something about them that turns me off.
I want to like octopath 2. I put 20 hours into the first one and was so disappointed with the lack of narrative. Plot and inter character development was replaced by fetch quests and it wore me down. There was so much good there tho, so I hope the sequel addresses that!
I'm a big fan of the original Octopath, and I hope to replay it eventually. I'm surprised to learn there was only one save slot, but I can imagine that being only the demo, as that wasn't a thing in the first game. I myself forgot to save at all trying to play the thing (a problem I need to shake), and so as soon as I was KO'd I just kind of stopped. I was definitely play it anyway in April or so, this just hyped me up more. I'm glad the composer came back for this game, because Triangle Strategy's soundtrack paled comparative to Octopath's.
The 1 save slot is 99,99999% just a demo thing
I don't think Triangle Strat used any of the same team. Just the style, and the boost system. It had a different studio name too. I believe Acquire is the one who made Octopath and Bravely Default but not TriStrat
Sounds like the save slot thing is just for the demo (though, I've never seen that before in demos I've tried before!).

@@drowningin You can actually play the other stories in the demo, you just need to start a new game. The 3 hour limit is only per save file rather than per user.

Yasunori Mitsuda is a guest composer for Sea of Stars. The main composer is Rainbowdragoneyes. The same guy from The Messenger. There is tutorial in Sea of Stars, it's just that the demo don't have them because the demo is not the beginning of the game. Octopath Traveler 2 looks good, but the game seems to have the same problem as the first one (grinding exp). My problem it's not that you need to grind, but rather that it's not the full team (8 characters) who got exp at the end of each battle, only the one who participate during a battle. So you always need to go to an inn, change a character with another. It's annoying and kind of a waste of time. :)
I was definitely a bit confused during the SoS demo but I still loved it. The devs said it doesn't teach because it doesn't take place at the start, and it will teach the stuff in the final game.
What is there to be confused about? Just have fun and figure shit out. Only took 10mins to understand the gameplay lol
@@GilgaMax305 mainly the combat related stuff like the moves to stop a bigger move, and what was like correct timing and what wasn't. I did get it and did really like it, just took a bit
by that logic the demo must dump you into a random spot part way into the first few hours and just start there, so lack of any hints makes sense, I didnt know about a few of the combat beats and did find it difficult, which in itself wasn't a bad thing

I didn't like the first Octopath Traveler, so I think I'll skip the sequel, but I just downloaded Sea of Stars and am going to check that out today. Great video!
Fun Fact: The Messenger, a 2D platformer came before Sea of Stars and takes place in the same world. Back when it was first showcased the developers spoke of Sea of Stars being a sequel (or maybe even a prequel) of The Messenger. So if you want to see more of its world check it out. It’s funny as hell and the storyline took me for a loop at times.
The Messenger is one of the best indies and on of the best games I have played. The hype for Sea of stars is real!
If SoS hooks me in, then I'll give it a look!
Just finished octopath and it made me love turn based games, can't wait for the second game.
Even without Yasunori Mitsuda (who apparently didn't do to much track), I would have been confident for the Soundtrack of Sea of Stars, Sabotage studio develloped The Messenger and the soundtrack of this game was just amazing.
In fact in general I'm confident in Sea of Stars because of Sabotage studio, with The Messenger they convince me that they absolutly know what they want to do with their game, and does have the balls to take some risky decision which IMO is appreciate, I'm really curious to see their own spin at the Turn-Base JRPG genre.
As for Octopath Traveler 2, well I had an absolute blast with Octopath Traveler 1, and from what I see the dev team is really giving a lot of effort to take what works with the first one and improve upon it, so I'm definitly excited for this one to.
Also I think the reason there is no proper tutorial in game is probably because the demo isn't the opening of the game, I think we can expect the full game beginning will feature a proper tutorial at the beginning.

I played the demos and I love Octopath Traveler more than Sea of Stars. The battle sequences in Octopath is more satsifying.
octopath 1 had like 10 save slots, so perhaps the save slot issue is just a demo thing

ME TOO!! I put in almost 100 Hrs on Octopath but I really really was disappointed that the narratives don't intertwine. I realllllly hope they actually tie things into an overarching story this time, seriously.
@@whatismyname5151 yeah, especially in the original they hinted that it would happen and how they tied it all together was really sucky. Like putting a superboss after a boss gauntlet and making the reward be crappy story docs? No thanks. At least they’re having characters directly interact during chapters in this game so my hopes are high.
@@marcar9marcar972 yeah I know it seems like a petty nit pick but it really does add a lot having narratives intertwine. Separate is just too disjointed almost like separate games. We need them to connect!
I really like the nintendo direct this time lots of good remasters and new games worth looking into octopsth traveler is a must buy ive been waiting for the sequel ever since i finished the 1st game last year hoping it will surpass the 1st game and more sequels to come
I thought Sea of Stars was amazing, Day 1 buy for me. I havent played OP2 yet. But looks and sounds the same as OP1? Are they basically the same or have you not played the first???
graphics is better and some character stories was interconnected, but the game rushing a LOT of content, it has less interesting thing to do in 2nd game.
OP2 is a more refined OP1 meaning that the problems in 1 are fixed in 2 also with a lot of new stuff like increased battle speed, new stories, more connectivity between the character stories, and the ultimate unique attacks. However, I personally don't think it for me as I think random encounters are too outdated of a mechanic to be in modern rpgs. Though the combat is phenomenal and fun, if the game didnt have random encounters i would drop the money to buy the game.

@@Terranigma23 Im unsure but for some reason i have doubt that they did as octopath really wants to be more traditional for better or worse. However, I could be wrong as that probably one a major complaint before cuz of the grinding.
I hope Octopath 2 fixes the issues with the first one. Sea of Stars looks good but the only thing I haven't liked about it since ever seeing it was how the characters look. It's weird too, because those devs made The Messenger, a game with a cool ninja, so it's really odd that they didn't make really cool designs for the main characters.
Way more interested in Sea Of Stars. Didn't like the original Octopath.
And on that note, the demo was short but it gave me what I wanted. I liked the combat, the characters and the soundtrack. I hope the story is engaging as well, which for me is the most important aspect of a JRPG right next to the gameplay loop.

Never played the original, I was still in my 'gaming rut' at that point in time so never rewinded back to this one.
Sea of Stars was an odd demo for me. I really loved the graphics, music and field puzzles... but I felt the combat wasn't great, especially since having the right elements ready to interrupt a big attack often felt luck-based. It felt like a game that'd work better as a Zelda style puzzle adventure than as a JRPG, at least on my first impression.
I don't feel the need to demo Octopath 2 since I don't see how it will be bad but I did demo Sea of Stars and it really lowered my hype for it. I did not like the combat. I could see getting used to it but my first impressions were not leaning me towards a day one buy.
If it’s anything like I remember the 1st being, Octopath II’s 1 save slot is a demo only thing and the full game should have 10 :)
They reduced it? I remember Octopath 1 have 24 save slots + 1 autosave.
@@adrienjoshua6710 maybe it has 24 now but back at launch I’m sure it only had 10 on Switch Version (I could be wrong as it’s a good few years since I played or it could be that yo have to fill all 10 for more to show like Pokémon Boxes etc.).

@@omensoffate The biggest issue I see people complaining is that the stories are barely conected, but this is a "proposital issue/error", because the game was meant to be like that, what a lot of people did not understand is that the game is not a spiritual sucessor to final fantasy V or VI, unlike bravely defaut, OT is a spiritual sucessor of LIVE A LIVE, a game where the story doesn't have only 1 axis, and all the characters follow this axis, the story of OT has 8 axis and they barely interact with each other.
While I grabbed the demos the day they released, I haven't gotten around to playing them, myself.
Octopath Traveler 2, I will probably grab at some point, I liked the first well enough. Though not being able to earn exp on inactive party members was deeply annoying.
Probably wait for a sale, though, despite it releasing on my birthday, heh. Besides, I need to reduce my backlog a little.
The timing thing for sea of stars is a major negative for me. I have nerve damage. There's a reason why I prefer turn based games.

Probably because OT1 didn’t ever even release on PS. It only released on Switch and Xbox.
Sea of Stars looks amazing. I wonder if this could be the next Chained Echoes, the SleeperHit bar none!
The weakest part of Chained Echoes was easily the combat system. And if SoS delivers there, man we are in for a treat as it seems.

I was immediately hooked on the OT2 demo. I went with Throne, the thief, and her story was gripping and fun. I really enjoyed OT and so I was hoping OT2 would be better in every way. So far, there are a few improvements, but it really doesn’t feel all that different. Despite the reviews and criticisms thrown at OT, characters still don’t really merge stories or interact in OT2. They just party up and do their separate thing when you reach the level requirements. I’m surprised that they still went down this route.
As for Sea of Stars, I was very… quick, I suppose, to stop playing the demo. Combat seemed uninspired, direction non existent… I pretty much uninstalled it within 10 minutes. But now you’ve shown me there were hidden facets, I’ll be giving it another go.
From how it’s been discussed, the Crossed Paths system, which has other party members interact more actively in each other’s stories, is a feature in the game. It just seems that each character’s first chapter happens to them in isolation, thus why they’re treated like flashbacks when recruiting the other characters. Which, because of the way the demo is structured, means we weirdly can’t ever see the system in action until the game comes out.
I have doubts about how effective this is going to actually be. I suspect it’ll feel a bit like the first game, except instead of quick optional conversations they’ll just be built into the story itself, but they might surprise us. It’s just a weird choice that there’s no way to see one of the most requested features in the demo meant to sell people on the game.

I do hope they fix how disjointed the stories between the main characters in Octopath Traveler are. It was so immersion breaking how the game acts as if the other characters are not there during their own stories, and how they hardly speak to each other. Same goes for how lifeless the NPCs can be, can't talk to half of them and don't even move like a bunch of cardboard cutouts, and usually have one dialogue unaware of what's going around them. Made me scratch my head a lot. I was actually playing Trails then Octo, couldn't help but compare the two in terms of character/world building, it made me go back to play Trails. Octopath's graphics, music, and combat is amazing, though!
octopath traveler is 100% god, the second one seems good, i would like it to give it a try
I was extremely disappointed with Octopath 1. I found the characters to be dull, the "stories" to be fragmented and cliche, and the combat to be repetitive, monotonous, and lifeless. Especially after coming off of Bravely Default and Bravely Second, Octopath and Bravely Default 2 were complete flops imo. I don't think I'll be purchasing OP2, as the demo just seems more of the same. However, Sea of Stars, on the otherhand, does everything right imo. For example, complex battle and progression systems, a likable and lively cast, an intriguing story, lively animations throughout all parts of the game, and more. I wish the release dates were flipped, but at least an August release gives me time to fully enjoy Hogwarts Legacy, Zelda TotK, and FFXVI before heading into Sea of Stars.
I _will,_ however, give Octopath 1 two compliments; It is an absolutely beautiful visual masterpiece, and the true final boss theme is a spectacular piece in modern-classical style as well as one of my favorite works of all time.

I will play both, but I am not touching Octopath Traveler 2 until someone releases a mod to remove all that hideous DoF. Why people are cool 50% + of the screen always being blurred is beyond me.
Octopath Traveler 2 -> Never was interested in the first game (funny enough, HD-2D graphics doesn't appeal to me all that much), so 0% interest in the sequel as well.
Sea Of Stars -> *Day 1 purchase* FOR SURE and one of my most anticipated games in 2023! Can't wait! :D
High encounter rate is one of the biggest turnoffs in octopath which made me drop the game. You literally cant explore or appreciate the environment without being interrupted every 3 or 4 seconds of walking.
Start with the scholar he has a support skill that reduces random encounters. Much better that way.
Maybe you haven't gotten Evasive Manuvers from Osvald yet. Didn't get the same problem using Cyrus in part1.
After you get the scholar shrine, you can equip Evasive Manuevers in any character, if already have Cyrus in your team, you don't even need to find the shrine

Octopath 1 was incredibly disappointing to me. Those 8 stories never connected despite having so much opportunity, so it just felt so incomplete. I do highly recommend the og Bravely Default! It is where the Brave/Default (Boost) system comes from as well as having so many job classes and so much customization. The story is also stellar!
Octo2 is supposed to fix that
@@drowningin I would hope so considering that was the most common criticism of the original. Having eight storylines in the world was a great notion, but the complete disconnect (aside from a couple minor characters who played a thematic role in more than one) killed the pacing. At least when Saga Frontier did it, you played through each story separately from beginning to end, so you weren't leaving all the others on hold while you pursued one. The disconnect also made the ultimate boss feel kind of random, since it had only come up in a couple of (seemingly totally optional) sidequests prior to that point, with little-to-no foreshadowing in the game itself. I liked the game despite that, but I really hope 2 can improve on it. It's also coming out the same week as Like A Dragon Ishin, so I'll almost certainly be playing that first anyway, but I have hopes the reviews for OT2 will be good.
