- MY REVIEW IS UNBENDING!
Thanks for watching guys! Man, the Switch is starting to become a real JRPG machine. With Octopath Traveler, Xenoblade, the newly announced Grandia I and II remasters....I can't wait to see what else we get on the system.

Wow. Now that's a well written review. Good job. Hear that, IGN? That's how you do a review. Love the game
Dont get their attention... they will copy the review and add a logo to it
The ign review of this wasn't even that bad
IGN: “wow nice review... my review.”
@@KyuuteAnimeGrill I didn't say this particular game review of theirs was shit. I'm saying that in general
@@captainp.2721 Yeah, I should have worded it better. I guess I meant "wasn't really that bad"
"Most RPG's follow a group of Teenagers trying to save the world."
This game includes A 30 year old bean, a hooker, your dad with a sword, Dexter but fun, eth, edgelord, your excellency, and a slightly smaller bean.
Y O U R E X C E L L E N C Y !
Lmaooooo
The Hooker is called a Whore too, and I'm pretty sure Therion says "FUCK THIS" when you attack something with a sword, which I will no longer take as anything else because thats hilarious and matches his character lol
@Codinhammer, how did you get “Fuck this” from “Take this” 😂
A bean? 😸
That music is absolutely gorgeous. And well done showing how to fix the shadow corner issue.
Thanks man! Felt good to flex those AMV muscles for that transition.🤣
The music in this game is some of the most beautiful sounding, well made music ever in an RPG.
I agree! Absolutely love it.
ehhhhhhhhhh i seen better
Better than chrono trigger and cross?
@@Pikachu-qr4yb Hmmm you make a good point those are on par if not better, I didn't say it was the best, just one of the best.
i know Dragon Quest takes the spotlight right now but ill definitely get Octopath Traveler, thanks for the review !!
Thank YOU for watching!!
Finally, a review by someone who actually played the game for longer than 15 hours! Great review.
Just played the demo for 2 hours with Therion and nooooow, its bought and downloaded. God is it a good game. Im so excited
Who's here after the 50% sale on switch?
Ahmad Riaz did u buy it? i’m planning to but i still don’t know
@@jazzy010 bought it. The price and the amount of content and its quality makes it sooo worth it. If you like playing jrpg, you will love this game . I absolutely love it
@@Skryzeeful i bought it already!! I guess i just went thru the first boss fight it's cool
@@jazzy010 Good to hear! If you're into games like this i highly recommend Dragon quest , or if got a ps4 , persona 5
Because of this comment I actually realized it was half off and I just bought it, thanks bro! :)
For a relatively new channel your videos are really high quality. Love the octopath video
Thank you! I really appreciate that.
Watched 3 reviews on this this morning. Got the next week off work and wanted to play a new game since I finished my grind to 60 on WoW and am waiting for the next content phase. You just totally helped me make up my mind. Time to delve into the past with this one! subbed :D
I just want to say, that I really appreciate nintendo giving you a 3 hour demo to play. It convinced to buy this game. The demo being the hook that got me... smart move ;)
Same here!
Demo is not available anymore. I wonder why.
Андрей yes it is... I just downloaded it lol. Check again, maybe change your region.
@@haiku_king yeah it's still there. I missed it first time somehow
I never understood why demos went out of fashion. When I played the demo I didn't even think Octopath was the best game ever, I thought it was a solid game, but the fact that I, myself, played that solid game, made me buy it. I would rather play a game where I myself can confirm it's just solid than believe some promises.
You convinced me, my ps4 broke down, so now I bought a Switch with this game. I'm so excited! Great review btw!
I just finished all the introduction missions. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Really great opinions. Those corner shadows were bothering me too, but I didn't realize until you pointed it out.
I am about 25 hours in and I think this is a good review from what I have seen so far.
You mentioned that the chapter 1s for each character are a bit formulaic, I would add that it can be slightly grindey. It's not horrible compared to some other games, but when you finish your first dungeon with your first character you will probably be around level 5-6, and their chapter 2 will require you to be level 20+. At this point it is more interesting to get more members for your party instead of grinding 15+ levels to solo the story of your main character, but each new character starts at level 1.
While the boss of your second party member might require you to be level 5 I think, for your 8th character it will be level 12, so you will have to level that character a bit, although the other party members will carry them to some extent.
So far I enjoy the game, I think it's a good game, but a few things could have been done slightly differently.
I also want to add one more thing about the battle system: you have already explained the BPs and correctly pointed out that it is more strategic than many RPGs. One thing I also like so far is, that buffs and debuffs actually seem to matter and that even bosses have weaknesses.
I have played many RPGs where bosses have no weaknesses and are immunie to debuffs and statuses. While boss battles should be highlights, this efefctively makes them more boring than trash mobs in many games, you just spam your strongest attacks, heal and hope for the best. In octopath Traveler the bosses have weaknesses and therefore you can still use strategy to beat them.
As a fan of short story collections this sounds like it's right down my ally. I haven't played a classical style rpg in a decade plus. This is a very good incentive for me to buy a Switch.
YES CYRUS IS THE BEST BOY
I really enjoy this game and I'm loving certain stories. I liked discovering secret bosses, advance jobs and secondary jobs as well. I found my favourite characters during chapter 2 of certain characters. I like the travel banter and I do get what you mean that with how open the game is in its structure that having the other characters appear in cutscenes would be a bit tricky because some people might not have anyone with them at all. It'd be a lot more stuff to add, it'd be really great if they could but part of me does think it was a budget issue. I can suspend my disbelief in some instances because I can let my imagination fill in the blanks by imagining them there but... sometimes it's a bit too immersion breaking. For example when Tressa showed up for a boss fight and was mocked for 'being alone' when I had all my other party members behind her. Because then it's like 'ok well what're they doing/where are they?' Because they're obviously there in combat. Just have a funny mental image of them chilling just outside like 'oh that's our cue, time to go fight' XD
That being said, even with that flaw, I really do enjoy the game
I really like the experimental nature of the game, I hope this becomes a series and they improve on it. I absolutely loved it
They're releasing a prequel. But sadly its only planned to come out on mobile :(
joesaiditstrue and only in Japan :/
@@Rexis102 That means it must not have sold well in the US. Well damn.
What I heard was they were working on an actual sequel to the game but the mobile prequel was sort of to just fill the Gap in between now and then.
It's a series now! Excited? I'm getting OT2 day one!
Fantastic review, thank you! I'm so glad SE just announced this is coming to PC in June, really looking forward to it ^_^
Sabin1981 Thank you for watching! I’m happy more people are going to get to play this amazing JRPG.
Completely agree with everything you said! Except the corner shadows only bothered me 5% of the time. Really hope we get more games like this!
Solid review mate, really enjoyed how you took the time to explain all the pros and some commonly pointed out cons but did so without an obvious bias. Please continue to release densely packed informative videos :)
Thank you so much!
I've watched half a dozen reviews before deciding on Octopath and yours by far had the most polish, concise content, and level headed reflection about your personal likes & dislikes. Bravo 👏
Music which is always 2nd to me after the tie of immersion and game play tie for first. Tho I may not play this as I am a Sony fan and have been since PS1 and will not have a PC for another year but when I get a PC this will be one of the first titles I play. Tho I will never complain getting both DQ11 and now the Trails of Cold Steel on my PS4 finally. again very solid review, with good sound and good editing.
Great review and great production for such a small channel. Compliments!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Imagine FFVI remade in the artstyle of Octopath Traveller...
I got up to your logo screen (1min in?) and the FF sound effect was enough for me to subscribe
Awesome review, subscribed.
Wouldn't mind seeing you do some reviews of past releases as well
I put over 100 hours into this game and absolutely loved it. The battle system is by far my favorite system I’ve played yet. It’s so satisfying breaking an enemy
Every review I've watched mentions how the stories don't link together, but solely thanks to you mentioning the party banter mechanic sounds like a good enough save for me. I'm finally down to play it!
I'm so happy that I found this gold mine of a game. I haven't gotten it yet, but I am SO going to buy it and I'm so excited.
This is a fantastic review! You encouraged me to pick up the game. This is the first video I have seen on your channel but 4 mins in and I subscribed.
Hey, I really appreciate it! Hope you enjoy what’s to come!
The review was very well done! I'm looking forward to playing this on the PC. I'm glad games are becoming more accessible on all platforms (looking at you Red Dead).
fantastic review, thank you for this.
Thanks for watching! :)
I enjoyed this review SO MUCH !! Thank you for making this video!!
I can't wait to try the game myself!! >u
I’m so glad you liked it!! That makes me so happy. :,)
Such a nice name, Virgil. Glad my parents thought the same way, when i was born😉 Just for that alone, a sub and a like from me. Oh yeah, solid review btw😉
Just started this game as it showed up on Xbox Game Pass, and I like it a lot. The visuals, the battle mechanics and the story all feels like a nice throwback to earlier jrpgs and I love that enough to try and finish it
Octopath Traveler was the first game I purchased on the Switch.
Quality content as always! I'm assuming we can look forward to DQ11 in the near future?
You know it!😉
What an awesome review. I've never played Nintendo before, and I'm thinking of getting the Lite, n this is one of first ones I wanna play. Thanks buddy!
Thank you for watching! The Lite + this game would be a hell of a good combo. ^_^
@@JRPGCentral Just ordered the Lite! Can't wait to get started
@@iamkurogane fire emblem three houses is also really good! You should look into it though because the school exploring stuff/student interaction might not be for you. I normally don't enjoy that kind of stuff but I really like it in that game
I want Final Fantasy Tactics done in this style *drool* - Nice Review, seriously considering purchasing... Might wait for the Switch version for my bday.
.....so played the Project Triangle Strategy demo yet?
@@watchergirl9 Thank you for the recommendation =)
Thanks for a great review.
I need to go back and finish this game, it’s pretty fun.
Incredibly good review, I've watched 3-4 other reviews of this game and this was leaps and bounds the best one.
Scott Smith thank you man! I really appreciate the kind words.
Really reminds me of the job system of FFV I really wish they'd use this artstyle in a remaster of V and VI.
It's almost like a short anthology collection game with the same overworld/towns, and I'm all here for it
The class system reminds me of Final Fantasy V.
I first heard about Octopath Traveller thanks to a cover. Thought nohing of it. The day before yesterday, I wanted some music while I was working and I found it's ost. I was so thrilled! I almost wanted to buy the game just because of that. But I saw one sentence in the comment talking about the lack of "natural" interaction between the characters... Relationship plays a big part in a story, at least for me.
Your review explains it well but still, I don't know... To spend 60€ seems too much...
I just recently started playing this game and I was hooked from the beginning, right away I pre ordered my copy of the sequel for ps5
I am not really into SNES kind of JRPG graphics and knowing I am so skeptical on Octopath Traveler since its announcement and release, but man just started playing the game today and for 2 hours, I'm hooked right away. Indeed, don't judge a book by its cover. The music is essentially one of the factors that kept me playing the game in Ophilia's story. I am still at level 6 lol, but the narrative flow is doing great, so far.
Wish more developers would utilize this art style
This review is near perfect 👌 9.5/10 great video :D
Thank you!❤️
I wanted to complete this game because I liked the unique character set up, different from a group of teens-early 20s saving the world. I also loved the art and music. But it got too grindy in Part 2 and the bosses took a long time to defeat....maybe I'll give it another try because I was really enjoying it up to that point.
Well, you sold me into this. They need to sponsor you lmao.
Scholar is such a great class, either make Scholar asap or recruit Cyrus first...
Also you can turn off the vignette effect in the settings tab.
Yeah, but as I talk about in the video that messes up the lighting pretty badly. So you have to tweak some other settings to make up for it.
Just dropping in to like video! I’m on chapter 2 right now for Therion so I’ll watch the review after I’m done! Loving the game so far.
I appreciate that dude!!
I found the 'bite-sized' chapter system being a bit shallow overall, especially paired with the repetitive format and dungeon setup as you mentioned. I never found myself hooked by or caring much for the npcs I met, and longed for the mid-to-late adventure synergy and events that other jrpgs tend to have.
I also found the combat and job systems fun but a little limited compared to Bravely Default or Bravely Second.
Overall I thought it was an enjoyable game with an interesting presentation and a great musical score like you mentioned. But stuff like the cleric's "save the kid who went into the woods" chapter, and other scenes made me feel like they might have rushed putting this game out.
Here after it was released on pc
Perfect as always!😆💕
Thank you thank you!❤️☺️
@@JRPGCentral ❤
I’m typically not into jrpg, but I love this game.
I hear a lot of Mixed Opinions on this game but it makes me think "Really? it's a bad game? I thought it was pretty good." I had a good time with this game but hearing the bad things about this game makes me feel like I'm the only one who likes it I mean sure it has flaws but Let's hope the sequel improves on it but I have to ask is it REALLY that good or am I just blinded from the SNES JRPG era?
The main issue of people about this game is that for them the price is too high for its graphics
@@whyhe11othere yeah well the main issue I hear people had with it is that the main characters don't interact with each other.
Love octopath, i just got it a month ago and beaten in a month ontop of that i still play it....my other favorite Jrpg is legends of dragoon, good ass game
Great review 🙂 I love this game so much!
Sargent Grey Thank you! Me too. :)
Totally agree!
Review Crosscode. It's a 2D action rpg that came out on the PS4 and Switch recently and I think you'd enjoy it
All right, honest question: out of all the reviews I've read/watched, only one of them correctly called BP boost points. Everyone else has some other name for it. Is it different in Japanese or is something else going on?
This is a good question that I don’t have an answer to. They’re totally boost points. Don’t know how I landed on “battle points”.
@@JRPGCentral you're certainly not the only one. Thanks for the video! I've been loving the game as well, just have the final dungeon to go.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, that boss is brutal man.
ブースターポイント、バトルポイント。It could either be booster points or battle points in Japanese since both versions of the english words battle and booster can be understood and are found in some Japanese texts.
@@abefinance109 interesting, thanks for the information!
I want to play this now, and i can on PC... but i'm getting a switch and damn it i rather play it on that lol.
And now the style have been implemented into classic JRPG remakes starting with Dragon Quest III
Yup this game is fantastic. Everything about my favorite moments in jrpg's. I haven't played much but I was hoping there r summons. Their solution for this is for a character to specialize in summons
Comment on the shadows on the edge of the screen - xbox one in the options has a way to minimize this.
This game is Dope!
Kinda old skool too!
Best Boy Cyrus
Ik I'm really late to this, but I'm replaying the game since the 2nd one is said to be released in a year. While watching the video, at around 4 minutes, you said change the characters to the one in the story so it's more natural, but idk if it's because I got the game on xbox...( probably is why) but to switch the first character you picked, you must beat ch 4 for them to take them out of the party, so Cyrus was with me for awhile...
If you are into Jrpgs its great.
I loved it and the whole game is there. No game cutting DLC.
Support Skills are awesome!
Waiting till the price drops
This bumped FF6 to my number 2 spot for ATG JRPG
Very cool grsphics and story plus music 🤗😍😎🤩
I'm 20 hours in this game and just reaching my 8th and final traveller. I haven't started any second chapter at this point. I like the game's visual style and the combat system is very good but I'm a bit more reserved about the story ...it's okay but nothing really jaw-dropping in my opinion. I'm just assuming it starts getting interesting in the following chapters as all I've actually done at this points are the character introductions. But 20 hours is kind of a loooong introduction XD
Just bought the game! I’ll keep you posted on if you were right lol
Was he right?
After octopath now you should focus on DQ XI it's look very awsome
Oh, you KNOW it! I’ll be doing a shorter impressions video a couple of days after it launches and a full review for that one. :)
I wouldn't say that the soundtrack is absurdly good, it can get quite repetitive, at least I think so. Brillian review btw, nailed every aspect without it having to be an hour long and you could see that you played the game through it's entirety
Nice we share the same name buddy....ow yeah, this game is awesome!
Heck yeah.😎
Can we get a full retro 3d game because if they did with the sequel that'd be amazing
Very great review for a very great game.im playing it right now
Thanks man!
Cool fkn channel dude glad I found you.
Thanks man!
I'm super late to this party, but I wanted to stop and say that your review was extremely good. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the attention to detail. I'm still mulling over dropping the coin for it, but I definitely feel that you did an incredible job of arming me with the info I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! I try my best. Your comment means the world.
Decisive battle 2 is a mood
I just bought my first switch because I really wanted this game, heard so many good things about it. The graphics are amazing. The main thing I don’t like is that it is very easy to get lost. There’s WAAAY too much terrain that they allow you to explore too early. I don’t think these areas should be available at anytime, they should be locked. There’s WAAAY too many pathways and the signs DON’T help at all. Why do they point you in so many different directions?! And these areas don’t even hint to where you are trying to get to. And so many save points I don’t even know where to save because I keep getting lost. I’m looking on the map for one of the lands and they are showing every other land accept the one I need to get to. Why are these signs so confusing? I’m at the very beginning trying to find victors hollow. I’m stuck walking ALL OVER THE PLACE through these desert areas, long paved roads, encountering caves that I shouldn’t even be going into yet because it’s too early. They tell you to follow the green thing to continue the main storyline, yet it already vanished off the mini map smh. How do you guys play this game?!! It’s so confusing!! This is really discouraging me from continuing the first character’s journey. Like why is this so difficult?!! I enjoy figuring RPG’s out, but getting stuck this early in the game shouldn’t be happening. And the side quests? How the hell do you even do those? Why does it take forever to level up and build money for better equipment? Why are the normal enemies so damn powerful and difficult to destroy? So hard to run away from? This takes up way too much time!!
I don't think I've enjoyed a soundtrack of a video game since Jeremy Soule came out with the Skyrim soundtrack. Cuphead's is pretty up there, as well. But Decisive Battle II is my absolute favorite. It just really makes you feel like life and death is on the line.
It’s absolutely up there with the best boss battle themes of all time. Especially how every character’s intro bleeds into the track. It’s too good.
@@JRPGCentral There's a video about how they purposely made each traveler's song at a pace where any part can easily transition into the boss battle songs and it's pretty ingenious. The final final final boss theme is reallllly awesome, too. Pretty epic
If they didn't have time, skill, or budget for robust character interactions, they shouldn't have made a game where eight characters is the sole focus (to the point of being the actual title).
so its like Saga Frontier?
What I like about this game is when you're in combat "defend" is very useful.
What is that RPG in the intro with the 3 mech uits walking in the snow?
Final Fantasy 6
@@jhemdoesgaming Thank you
2:00 exactly what I do when I arrived there😂 thought we can go in...but no
Are there any games out there with this art style???
cyrus is indeed best boy
I really enjoy this game even though it has destroyed me a couple of times. But My only complaint about this game it's a little too long I mean I know it's an RPG but I'm used to RPGs that are like 20-30 hours long (Like My favorite RPG of all time, EarthBound.) I still really enjoy it but I can't really see myself replay this game very often.
So about 4 to 8 hours per character? So If i only wanted to play one person itd be a kinda short game huh?
I’ve been thinking of restarting this. The only thing is I burned out on the game because of how much grinding had to do. That’s really my only complaint with the game.
