  • Abandoned Long John Silver's / A&W Robinson Township, Pa. We already don't have many Long John Silver's restaurants left around Pittsburgh but this was one of the very few that also had A&W in it.

      Here in Colorado the A&W’s are paired up with KFC; at one time there were standalone A&W’s, and I even ran into one or two that were part of a Shell / 7-11 or Circle K combination. Even ran into one that was part of a Texaco/Circle K pairing too.

    The small freezer door is for food deliveries. The semi truck pulls along side the building and they have a conveyor belt that comes out the side of the semi trailer. This allows them to transfer cold food straight from the truck to the freezer. Very ingenious idea.

    I used to like the stand-alone A&W's with the carhops. I remember they used to always serve the root beer in the frosted mug. That's when they had the bear family burgers, Mama Burger, Papa Burger, Baby Burger, and Teen Burger.

  • @BoratWanksta
    @BoratWanksta Před 6 lety +2

    I remember years ago, I used to see the occasional A&W and Long John Silver's combo restaurants in Illinois and other parts of the Midwest. They don't seem to be as common, as they used to be. There still are some standalone LJS in the Chicago area, but a lot of those locations seem to be (probably) quietly struggling. Since they do a lot of various cheap meal deal promotions, and also do local coupons from time to time. Already a few like in Naperville(or Aurora? can't remember, it's on Route 59 near the Fox Valley Mall) closed down, and another location(Lincolnwood) briefly closed then reopened again.
    A&W used to have some combo locations in both the Chicago area and in other parts of Illinois. I recall there was one in Normal, IL(back when I attended college in that area) that was combined with a KFC. I believe it is now closed, per googling that location not long ago. IIRC, there was an A&W and LJS in Matteson, IL, but don't know if that one is still open anymore. There were some others too, such as a combo KFC/A&W in Berwyn, IL. And more I'm forgetting. A&W seems to be slowly closing down more locations in recent years in IL, such as one inside Woodfield Mall that closed something like 2 years ago, give or take. It's funny now that I think about it, that per online research that A&W in Canada seems to have been spun off from Yum Brands at some point, and has a lot of locations in Canada for whatever reason. I wouldn't be surprised if the expansion of Sonic, hurt A&W to some extent.
    Another great video, btw from you! Btw at 6:00 into this video when you're looking inside from the side entrance all the way back towards where you see the walkway widen to an ordering counter to the right, and the dining area to the left, do you have any idea what was inside the first open door on the right close to this side entrance that was widely propped open?

    A&W is my favorite restaurant. There was one 5 minutes away from me when I lived in Michigan, but in TN, the closest one is an hour and a half away. That I know of anyway. When they combine the restaurants like this, sometimes they only show up as one. I actually went to an A&W I stumbled upon, then searched for it on google maps, but it only shows up as a LJS. Doesn't show up on the A&W website either. So now I'm searching all the KFC and LJS locations near me to see if they're also an A&W lol.

    We had an A&W /Long John Silvers combo location here in Newton, Iowa think it closed up around 2008 - 2010. The building became an liquor store called pit stop liquors and opened around 2012. Think the restaurant combo opened 1999 and Hardee’s used to been in the building since early 80s up to around 2000. And they had those same lights inside as the one in your video. Good capture and strange the most of the drive up menu board with food items still there. 😀

    Back in the early '90s, I worked at the Arby's just on the other side of that water tower at 4:56....Business at all the restaurants along the Pike was BOOMING back then, long before all the eateries opened in North Fayette Pointe, Settlers Ridge, & The Mall At Robinson -- Robinson Towne Center had opened not too long before that & the SUPER-KMart still existed. Now, that LJS is gone, the Burger King down the road is gone, the Denny's closed & is now Central Diner, & the Eat n' Park down the road was the corporate store & used to be one of the busiest in the region...Next door to the Arby's is a KFC/Taco Bell hybrid restaurant whicc is pretty cool. So many changes along the Pike in the past 20 years...There was an Ames right down the road back then also.

    What really happened to all of these is that YUM brands put its Long John Silvers up for sale. Once it was bought, they no longer owned it. Thus, they either had to close or rebrand their LJS combo stores to the traditional store model of a remaining brand (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut).

    Yum Brands sold off the A&W and LJS chains in late 2011, which may have led to this store's closure. Each one was bought by separate groups. In this area that meant two KFC/A&W became KFC only.
    If I needed to redo a kitchen I do think I'd want to use one of those tables, with part of a booth and some of the chairs. They have a nice retro look to them.

    I think there's still an A&W/KFC in New Albany, Indiana. But they seem to be a dying breed. LJS, otoh, is a weird thing. You never see one busy. Yet they're still here. You almost never see one close. Makes you wonder. There is one near where I used to live in Louisville KY that closed, and then reopened as a liquor store, but kept the original exterior building design. It's still completely recognizable. I have no idea what the actual name of the store is. But because it's easily recognizable as an old LJS, everyone I know (myself included) has always called it Long John Liquors, LOL.

      @@WallieB26 , we got a LJS/TACO BELL in Gloucester County N.J. Long John Silvers food is ok, but for fast food seafood I think Arthur Treachers was better. Unfortunately, none of those around anymore.
